Serious question.... What precautions have anyone taken for proper disposal of edited genes?

Hi! In this kit only the bacteria's chromosomal lacZ gene is edited. The system has been designed for safety, and no other genes may be edited with it. lacZ has been studied for decades and the gene product, β-galactosidase, is only used by the bacteria to break down sugars.

Hi! This heat step at 95 °C, in combination with the lysis solution, helps break open the bacteria cells to extract their DNA. The bacteria are not viable (i.e. not alive) after this DNA extraction.
