For many years, Mazda has put smiles on the faces of car enthusiasts and to this day continues to do just that. Widely noted for its small, light, technologically modern, dynamically balanced, and minimally complex design, the third generation MX-5 received several accolades such as the 2005-2006 Car of the Year Japan Award. Today Alex sits down to talk about the many reasons you might want to own an NC Mazda Miata.

I have an NC and it's an amazing car, I'm glad someone FINALLY acknowledged that!
Fab9 tunning is an amazing company that works with miatas and even tho they work with all of them.. they have 3 race cars and they're all NCs! And I would definitely rather trust their opinion over anyone else's (AKA everyone that hates on them but never actually driven one)

- Bucket Seat

In the end Its best less people know about the NC miata.
True, less of them get destroyed compared to the NA/NB platforms
True
I have owned all of them. I had the NA NB, My wife had NC ND RF. they are all good, I like them all. We moved to the 370Z it's not bad but it isn't as nimble as the Miatas. It is much faster though lol
Honestly
True they ugly
Literally just bought an NC about a month ago, I've never been more in love with a car...
Same!
About to join in the same trip in one month, really hyped about it
Same. Base model w/o LSD. Kind of trying to decide if that should be the first mod
More smiles per miles than Boxster
Same, 07 5 speed manual
I already own an NC, I'm just here for the confidence boost.
Yeah fun fact: when my NA got into a wreck I got more money from selling my hard top then I did my actual car. It saved me financially actually.
top saved your life
“You can get a Miata for 1200 dollars” me not being able to find something that isn’t absolutely destroyed for under 5k: :0
This!!!!!!!!
Same. 😭
He did say not the best but you can get one
Got my NA in 2018 for $1900. Later bought a hardtop for $1300 :-P
@@rogerwhitley9478 the cheapest Miata in my state is 6 hours away and it’s 3500 for a rusted piece of crap with 160k miles 😢 the Miata tax is worse than the subie bro tax
This is the miata that definitely got me into looking at miata because my friend allowed me to drive it. He took me around a corner and said, "gas it all the way and don't let off". Let's just say I was amazed at how fast it took the corner without any effort and I've been hooked ever since.
Missed last week but " so you want to work at F.I. " 😎🏎🚘
NC is the best miata and here is why, 5x114.3, enough said!
Plus you can fit in it
I have a lowered ND2 and a stock NC3 Grand tour with the hard top.
The ND is certainly more fun to play with but if your going for a drive the NC is just a superior car. Comfortable and still makes you smile. I bought mine due to the opinions expressed by actual owners that were defending the whole boat thing. I was not disappointed.
So glad I bought my nc before everyone figured out what a bang for buck they are
NC is literally the best Miata... most reliable, most interior storage, great wheel options 👀 NC2/3 especially with forged internals, the facelift y’all mentioned, slightly improved transmission, and higher redline. I do a bunch of videos for NCs if anyone needs how-to, etc.
And for 4k you can get a set of itbs and cams, that boost hp up to 225 whp, and the redline to 7,800rpm... It also sounds amazing... (dream car lol)
Cool, I’ll come over and check you out.
@@griffins750I've heard negative reviews of that ITB kit, actually! If you're in Britain it's pretty good, but BBR apparently have terrible support for us overseas. I've heard of people waiting almost a year to get flash tunes. It's also really fitted for RHD cars, so there are some fitment issues and light fabricating required for left-drive cars. Lastly, the ITBs have their own e-throttle unit, which apparently is noticeably slower than the stock Miata throttle, making the response more sluggish than stock.
I was gutted to hear all these things, since I REALLY wanted that sound, and 225 bhp sounds perfect. But I don't want my poor Miata to become a project car stuck in the driveway because a company won't check their email. So I'll be focusing on exhaust (especially headers), a tune, and maybe some day consider going ham on a Rotrex supercharger. But probably not.

You know that feeling when a friend comes and stabs you in the back out of nowhere? And you go on and act like it's ok, but it's not ok, and you just feel dead inside?
For me definitely the NC1 with fabric seats and soft top, the hardtop lacks in length when it comes to looks.
There are Hardtops you can get for the soft top which are longer and actually give the car a way better line.
Sadly those Hardtops are expensive AF because they are pretty rare since most people who wanted a Hardtop were going for the retractable one.
Other than that I can only recommend to clean the Rain drains with a Trombone brush before they get clogged or you will find mould growing under your seat and in the trunk space.
Bought an NC1 in November of 2018. Best car I’ve ever owned by far.
AGREED!
Was looking for a miata around June of last year and I watched your guys’ other ‘so you want a miata’ video religiously, noticed the lack of NC talk and decided to check the prices on that gen and found my current baby; 06’ NC miata with 98k miles for $5,000. Love this car and I’m so glad you dedicated a whole video on it!
Yeah, a bargain and sooooo much more car than those NA and NB's! Nice find!
Alex just brings a different kind of energy to this channel. Keep it up bruv.
Having owned an nc, this makes me so happy to see it get more love
I have an NC Mayada it’s a great car. It still has the Hydro power steering. And the size and comfort is great. And the retractable hardtop is much better than the current model.
Yes, no massive blind spot and won't buffering of the current hard/targa top. No fake windows either
Agreed, though I love the looks of the RF, when I drove it the blind spot and Targa top wind buffeting drove me crazy. Didn't hurt that my NC2 PRHT saved me about 10K either ;)

@@tommynobaka it’s not like someone’s gonna even get their hands on them. Exactly bro their rare, people can’t get them. It’s a car that people wish they could get but can’t.
Former Cressida owner here, this car slaps. :)
I've got an NC, absolutely love that car.
I own an NC and i love it. My biggest problem is the aftermarket support regarding body kits. But its a reliable car. The 2.0 engine has been very reliable when taken care of. Comfortable ride after a coilover install. With higher displacement, youre faster than stock NA and NB miatas a lil more zippy but youre also heavier. This generation of miatas wanted to put in a more comfortable interior which is the reason for the heavier weight.
It's 100lbs! lol
The more comfortable interior was really secondary. The car is bigger and heavier because it's a cut-down RX-8. But in my opinion, the pounds in the NC are well justified, because compared to NA and NB, it is a MUCH stiffer and more advanced chassis. Although the architecture is basically RX-8, Mazda changed and pulled weight out of almost every part. If you do the various strengthening mods to make an NA or NB as stuff as the NC, you'll easily get up to NC weight. The NC has a lighter engine and lighter suspension components than the early cars. A lot of the heavy parts that can be removed or replaced on the old cars are already light and strong on the NC. The engineering is simply much further on. The ND is obviously lighter, largely due to being hit with the 7/8ths shrink ray.
the very last versions of NB was actually heavier than the early NC models
Honestly, it's perfectly fine in stock form. Just swap out the old brittle plastic overflow tank for a new aluminum version for a little piece of mind. That and some good tires and you're good to go
My 2015 NC GT hardtop is an absolute joy to drive and look at as is without any additions whatsoever.
I liked the car so much I bought a NC3 Miata. Slammed it down on some Ohlins coilovers, put some Enkeis on it and now this next year going to get some hyper grams for the track. The car doesn’t get much love but these chassis are so capable people swap a 2.5 Duratec motor into them and slay others all day long
NC2 Miata owner here. Honestly it’s a fun car waiting on BC racing coilovers but the stock suspension is pretty good!
Recently purchased an 07, copper red mica hardtop convertible, six speed manual... Am so loving that car! It's my retirement gift from me to me!!
I bought a Nc 2012 true red an i am so happy with it. I changed only the wheels for a lightweight italian Sparco and what a difference!. The NC is the best miata ever. A friend has a ND2 and although the engine is bettter, the electronic steering wheel system is not comparable with the Hydraulic fron the NC. Alabama the exhaust pipes are better looking in the NC.
I have a 91 NA and honestly I wouldn’t trade it for the world! I love the NA
I have red 91 and also wouldn’t trade it for the world
I love my MX 5. When I bought it my nephew said it was a girl car. I found that he was right. I drove it to the hospital parking lot and all of a sudden all the nurses wanted to ride in it, the nurses stroked the car softly along its fenders and would want to spend time sitting in the cabin and check out all the instruments. So if you want a sports car and want to attract pretty women, go buy a Mazda MX5 NC with a 2.0 liter engine.
MX5-NC attract beautiful women with impeccable taste.
Chicks definitely dig it.
What got me into mazda was the Rx8. Strange to most but it looked beautiful to me. Well with the NC being built on the bones of the Rx8 made me enjoy the ride of the car. I loved it, but I bought a na miata a few months back. I love it, but now I want them all lol.
I own an ND but I love the NC too (and NA and NB…). When I was younger I thought it was too “bubbly” stylistically but it’s really grown on me in last 5 years. The hardtops in particular look sick to me now.
ND is really nice, but it’s at a relative premium price. NC gives you same amazing driving experience without sacrificing much on safety and features but at a much lower entry price.
you should see my NC. its a beast. has a 2.5L swap from a 2014 ford fusion. it defenitly hauls ass. has a full straight pipe, intake, gecko coilovers and federal ss595's to let me slide but keep grip. Stage 2 tune. ~220 hp 185tq
I don’t know if anyone will see or understand this, but I’m a HAM radio operator, and right now I’m actually gearing up to make the NC I drive my mobile rig set up. In short I’ll be putting a big ol antenna on it and it’ll kinda look like a big RC car. Not a very cool look, but I love it none the less.
Just bought a 2012 grand touring… love it! Sold my NB that I drove for almost 10 years for almost the same price I paid in 2013. The NC is a more refined daily driver. The hard top is awesome… and when the top is down, the NC is so planted to the road.
THE COMPLETE TIMING OF THIS VIDEO MAN. Its only been 2 weeks since I bought my Nc miata. And this video shows up. Dang. But for real tho im loving this miata. Just got coilovers and looking the get wheels next

WHEELS!!! and THANK YOU for do this! I f***in love this chassis and I'm one of like 4 modified nc Miatas rolling around eastern North Carolina
If any of you doubt or underestimate the NC MX-5's capabilities, copy and paste the following title onto the searchbox of youtube:
'Nürburgring Nordschleife BTG 07:58.07 with obstacles... Mazda MX-5 Miata NC 2,0'
The NC MX-5 (with no internal engine mods in that video) is driven by ex-Koenigsegg testdriver Robert Serwanski and he gets held up by a 997.2 GT3RS TWO times. The GT3RS driver overtakes him on the long straight but gets overtaken by the NC MX-5 in the continuous twisty sections of the Nordschleife. Since then, he's posted an even faster laptime of 7:37. It is the true definition of slow-car-fast > fast-car-slow.
Totally agreed that video of the NC driven by ex-Koenigsegg test driver Robert Serwanski was epic. Hope he attempts for a time attack again in 2021!
Funniest part: he's running an open diff.
@@ryanyearsley5345 True that. Ironic isn't it?
A have a widebody nc and it’s been fun so far 👍🏼
It comes with a wide body from the factory.
I owned an NC since 2006, it is the best platform for an auto ever.
Very nice video, I couldn't agree more. 😁 Also thank you very much for including some of my drifting clips in your video 🙏❤
Hell yeah fam! Great footage!
Love my NC, 7 years with it and has not failed me. Have all sorts of vids with it on my channel too
We got an NC 3 weeks ago and just joined a Miata club. We got a couple of comments about it from miata “purists” because it’s about 200 pounds heavier. An actual trunk you can use, comfortable legroom, extra heating vents for your legs, a glove box and two storage spaces behind the seats. What’s not to love? And I think they look better than the 4th gen.
Nevermind all the extra space we get compared to those guys, our cars have a MUCH stiffer chassis and much more advanced suspension geometry. Fun fact next time someone wants to talk about weight. Our 2.0 engine weighs less - quite a lot less - than the original CAST IRON 1.6 from the first NAs. The NC is actually a few pounds lighter than the Mazdaspeed NB, AND we have just as much power. At the end of the day, we're still 300lbs lighter than an S2000.
That Mazdaspeed bodykit is sooo good. Also love the removable hardtop. Coming from an ND owner
I bought a 2013 this year. Best decision ever.
I'm glad y'all did this video. The NC Miata's are the one's that I've been looking for. I guess I usually go for the less loved generations. I went for a 9th gen Civic SI instead of a 8th or 10th, I want a NC Miata instead of a NA or NB. Both of the cars people bitched about the suspension... who cares don't we usually lower the damn things anyway?
Just got a 2008 NC recently with the 2.0 MZR, the engine is great, the transmission even better, the handling is so refined yet responsive... it's true when they say a Miata is a great introduction to a 911 :)
I drove one this past sunday... I had the time of my life
NC is definitely an underappreciated car, I even underappreciate it I actually wanted one until I saw the ND. I appreciate and smile more when I see a NC, especially when I'm in my ND2 😁
Got mine NC two years ago for cheap , tracking it is most fun ever .
The NC is way better than anyone, especially miata people, give it credit for. Everyone just calls it a boat, then buy an NA.
Two cars I’m looking at: 2007 & 2011 grand touring hard tops. They are the same price, the 07 has 120k and the 11 has 150k miles. The 07 has mismatched tires but looks to be in good condition. No tears or wearing in interior and no rust. The 11 is very well cared for. You go for the older or newer NC PRHT?
September 7th,2001 this is not a coincidence I'm definitely buying a Miata 😂
I have an NC in the middle of a 2.5L swap right now. With the Mazdaspeed bumper, Fortune 500's, Advan TC4's, and a hardtop, I'll take it any day over the NA/NB
I drive a gun metal grey 2014 MX 5 NC. A ten second car. It came out of the box race ready with Le Mans paddle shifters on the steering wheel. Every time I drive it I'm in a James Bond movie. When people see it they ask, 'does it have machine guns behind the fog lights?' The license plate reads 009. It's definitely licensed to kill. Does a 'drift' nicely. Q branch read out, race ready with paddle shifters. A ten second car, does 0 to 100 mph in ten seconds. Double wish bone suspension and drive while flat tires makes her a nimble cat with tough paws. The body is made of rust resistant steel and carbon fiber (Kevlar) material. The hood, roof and trunk lid are aluminum. It has quarter inch metal armor under the engine and transmission. Stainless steel exhaust naturally. A seven speaker Boise sound system keeps the Bond theme music coming thru 5 by 5.
NC Miata MX-5 is just so underrated, and same to R33 GT-R and 996 911, I just love those not as much loved equivalents of legendary cars, other examples that I might can think of for now is the A70 Supra, 3rd generation.
I want one, a friend has had all three of the previous gens and recommended the NC. Also it's WHEELS!
An NC in STR trim is an excellent Touge car and still makes a good STR car for local events. They're competitive against S2000's and nobody considers them slow.. 😉
Now over a year with my NC2 and I absolutely adore it! Coilovers, light wheels and good tyres, trunk strut bar and some door bushings really make it a beast. Along with some QOL upgrades it has been my most beloved daily and will be for a long time to come since I had a professional to deal with all past and future rust problems.
You can ditch the trunk strut bar and save the weight. For one thing, Miatas don't have struts, so the shock towers aren't subject to the kind of stress that strut cars are. But more importantly, right in front of the trunk is a MASSIVE structural beam which makes the rear-wheel area the stiffest part of the car. Many other cars, especially hatchbacks, are very weak back there and benefit from the bar. Miatas have that covered from the factory. A better reinforcement is to get a butterfly brace on the bottom of the car to box-in the PPF tunnel.
Door bushings are legit tho.
@@JETZcorp thanks for the advice. The rear strut bar I got is a slim single piece that barely weighs over a kilogram.
But I will look into the underbody brace you described, sounds very useful.
As of now I also replaced the facory front strut brace with a 4 point single piece one from ultra racing. This definitely helps my coilovers work more better. And it gives considerable Street cred whenever you open the hood.
@@Kyouske_42 Yes, the front braces are good since the front of the car is not nearly as solid as the rear (due to an engine being in the way). It'll make your coilovers work better simply because it stops the whole car from twisting around them. The stiffer your springs, the more benefit you get from stiffness.
Flyin' Miata did a long video about stiffness and bracing for Miatas. It's excellent, even if the NC doesn't get mentioned as much as the others.
I enjoy mine 2010 and she gets the love/attention. A loyal stead~
My son drove a Porsche Taycan The other day and said it didn’t really drive a lot different than my NC Miata. Yes, it had a better 0 to 60 but in the corners it felt a lot the same. He even said that the suspension felt very similar. So why would you pay $130,000 for a Porsche Taycan, when you could get a really fun car for about a 10th of the price? I got mine for $9000 a few years ago.
As an NC Miata owner, people never wave back to me, but don't realize I can party with my na/nb/nd friend's 😭
I feel you
We can also spank them with a simple cai and a tune lmao
Must be your area...filled with purists too much. I always got waves from other years... it threw me off at first in fact.

frankly i like the nc stock. still low enough to the ground where i feel good going 40 mph but also not low enough to where i am afraid to scrape half the road here in texas with all the potholes there are in the more rural roads. the engine has a good balance between power and mpg and the bose system is sufficient to listen to music comfortably. in case you have not deduced it, i daily mine. for those looking to use it as a fun car or a drag car or whatever, does not fit their use case out of the factory
Keep it stock. If you own it in another 20 years. They are the ones that will be like hens teeth. And in black and 2.0 Top money.
The two vehicles I want to own is the NC Miata and the Mazda3 ( 2nd gen hatch )
