I have an 86 Monte Carlo SS. Black with TTops. Burgundy interior and buckets with factory console. Has 23,000 original miles. The 305 HO wasn't super power wise but really not much was in the 80s. But with the OD trans and 3.73 gear it gets down the road pretty good. Love these G bodies. Bought it 5 years ago and plan on keeping it till me time is up. Runs and drives excellent

L69 5.0 litre H.O was a very underrated engine. Was a potent carbed offering for the day for sure. The Rochester quadrajet mated with this small block was a sweet unit. I had an 84 z28 for many years back in the day an it was a blast. 5 speed BW trans. Fun. Fast.
I had this exact car. Bought it from a dealer in Virginia Beach in 85 and sold it in Suffolk County on Long Island in 88. 84 was the only year they offered the Blue SS. It felt pretty cool driving around in that car.
Steve your usually correct in your research, but the non overdrive car's, 1983,1984, had a turbo 350C which had lock up, and the rear gear was 3.42 only.
I've owned one since new. Bought it new when I was 19 and I can verify Turbo 350 transmission and a 3.42 rear. Mine is the only other color available for 1984 White
Hey Steve, bought a brand new ‘86 Cutlass Salon with T-Tops and a 307, 4 spd Auto. First new car. Just returned from Germany in ‘86, car was Blk/grey interior. Loved it!! Beat many Chevies with it.
My dream car. I've had 2 of them. A 84 lc and an 87 ss. I learned cars from them. I can rebuild one of these bumper to bumper blindfolded. 😊 Had to sell my 87 ss when I started my family but I'll have one again. Some day..
Yup, an SS. Based on the HOC website, with the VIN for the win: 1G1 for US made Chevrolet, A for manual seat belts, Z for Monte Carlo, 37 for two door, G for 305 V8 with four-barrel, high output, RPO code "L69", 0 is a check digit, E for the 1984 model year, R for Arlington, TX assembly and the rest is the production sequence. The Arlington, TX plant still operates today and produces trucks and SUVs. Regular Monte Carlo models would have the RPO code "LG4" 305 V8, VIN code "H". You're correct on the US market, they only had 305 V8s, but there is something called the "Mexican Monte Carlo SS" and that had a 350 V8, RPO code "LM1" which was the "garden variety" 350 used back then. It was not available in the US market. No tag, can't brag, but possible code 27 Medium Dark Royal Blue exterior paint. Partially correct (although you weren't thinking about it when you spoke of it, since you're concentrating on the Monte Carlo). Certain F body cars also had the "HO" version of the 305 as well. Yes, the Monte Carlo Aero Coupe was 1986 and 1987. The Grand Prix Aerocoupe was 1986 only. Nah, you weren't beating much in these, that's for sure. My '79 Trans Am with the 400/4 speed (which is as heavy as this and doesn't have computer controls) would eat it alive and outhandle it too. No, some Monte Carlo SS models did come with bench seats, not all had buckets.
@@garymckee8857 Yes, the Cross Fire was available in 1982 and 1983 in the F-body cars (VIN code 7 in 1982 and S in 1983) and in the 1982 and 1984 Corvette (both VIN code 8 engines).
I own an 84 SS, French Light Blue, no T-Tops with bucket seats, and console. I did replace the turbo 350 with a 2004r which makes the car a pleasure to drive on the highway. It's not a hot rod, but it is a great cruiser that is smooth, quiet and dependable.
Wanted to by the exact same car you are showing. Looked at one on the showroom floor, 15% interest. The paint job was the prototype for oranges. I passed.
That 305 is basically a Silverado pickup 305 which was 180hp and 300hp if it was swapped to 350 . If that 305 is making 300hp amazing! But a good running one is still fun to drive .
Yeah, HIGHLY doubt that 305 is putting anywhere close to 300 to wheels. Even with every top-shelf bolt-on you'd see 230-240 tops. You're better off just swapping with a 350 and start from there.
I was born in 84, 16 when I got my 84, it had Kragers as well and flomasters, wrecked in a parking lot when I was 20, got a 86 shortly after t-tops, sold it years ago for $800, purchased my 88 in 2008 wrecked and me and my dad took the parts off my 84 and fitted it on the 88 painted it with the stimulus check from Obama lol, had good memories with it and sold it for $2200 a couple of years ago. I loved these cars and still do
I often got the SS confused with the Buick Grand National. They did have similar body sryles. The SS was a great looking 80's car. I almost bought one but the dealer wouldn't take my offer.
For me this Monte Carlo is more beautiful than the buick grand national although the national with the Turbo was way lot more faster but in terns of the body style the monte carlo it's more attractive
In 1984 my dad had a sad little 75 Monza and mom had a 78 AMC Concord wagon with real wood stickers. I always asked to be dropped off and picked up about a block away from school.
I think you should do a review of the 1979-1980 malibu M80 it was the first nascar vehicle. They seem to be little know as they came before monti SS and even before the GN.
In 1984 I was 21 years old. I was a mechanic for Luby Chevrolet on Austin Street in Forest Hills Queens NY. We had two of them on the roof. One in slate Blue, and one in white. I drove the blue one, it was pretty fast for what it was. I was impressed. I wanted to buy one,but I couldn't. They were limited and those were sold already. So I ordered an 85. They came in other colors, so I ordered a burgundy one. Well, it finally arrived. What a complete disappointment. It was a great looking car, but it was a dog. For 85 it no longer came with the HO 305. It had a 305 four barrel from the caprice station wagon. No performance there what so ever. Again it was a great looking car. But not very fast. Anyway at the time I lived in middle village Queens ,and I parked it in my driveway. One morning my dad and I came out to go to work. Both his Buick limited and my Monte Carlo were gone. They took his car because it was blocking mine. Both cars were gone. We didn't hear anything in the house. We both got paid by the insurance company. I bought a new grand prix and my dad bought a new lesabre.
I grew up in Fresh Meadows, Queens in that era. Friend of mine bought an AeroCoupe and installed a removable steering wheel as an anti-theft device. That car got stolen with the steering wheel still in the house...
1985 still had the VIN code "G" engine (RPO code "L69") which was the "HO" 305. The "regular" 305 was the RPO code "LG4" VIN code "H" engine, which wasn't used in a 1985 Monte Carlo. Luby Chevrolet would become Lawrence Chevrolet and H.B. Chevrolet and it still exists as a Chevrolet dealer, except today it's called Sunrise Chevrolet of Forest Hills. Luby had locations outside of NY as well.
"Turbo 200"?!? Haven't heard that in a while. Mom had a 79 Malibu with the 200 cid (3.3L) V-6 making 95 HP and 160 lb-ft of torque and the TH200. IIRC, 1st gear was a 3.06 vs the 2.52 of the TH350, which made that Malibu quick........up to 20 mph. On cruise nights in the mid 80's, fill the tank with 98 octane Sunoco (lived near sea level), put in two bottle of 104 octane boost, advance the timing to 8 degrees BTDC, flip over the air cleaner cover and hope for the best. Little Malibu would hold its own......to 30 mph. I can remember a few early Sunday mornings putting the timing back to 4 degrees BTDC, flipping the air cleaner cover back to the original position and filling the tank up with 85 octane, trying to put Mom off the scent that I was out "drag racing" the night before. Never fooled her; Mom always knew.
Yeah the montecarlol is a real nice car but the best one is a 1984 super sport from Mexico that one was unique piece of car it was only offer in Mexico and they have the 350 V8 and Hertz manual transmission with interiors off there Grand Prix really nice example
Beautiful cars but slow. I had a 78 Grand Prix with a slightly modified 301 that would hang right with them or beat them. 80s were a weird time. We got lulled into the “ high horsepower “ of a 200 hp slug because we thought that’s all there was left and then got baited into 10 or 15 hp increases for the next 15 years.
