Years back I built an early '80s Monte SS for a customer, a 454 with an inexpensive Eagle stroker kit (496") with mildly ported oval port heads, a solid lifter Comp cam, and an open plenum intake covered by an 850 Holley, a modified TH400 and a 9" Ford rear axle. With good traction on a set of Quick Times it'd carry the front wheels roughly 4 inches off the pavement about 30ft out! Good times!
Not really. This car would have been 10 times better and just as fast with a lightly modded all-aluminum small block, like the 6.0, instead of that heavy boat anchor 454 in the nose.
@Charged So, you're happy to sacrifice handling for the sake of being able to brag that your car has a 454 in it, even if it's not any faster than a modern V8 ?

@@mewrongwayKOCXF lol. That LS is turbocharged, that 454 and 502 are NA engines. Little lesson for you bud. When an engine is setup correctly, You'll get around 1HP per 1CI. I was doing the compressed air in the cylinder trick to hold the valves up 30 years ago. If the engine is in a manual trans car, make sure it's in neutral when you hook up the air or the car will move.
Between the accessories and the driveline that adds up to a 38.4% loss. That's why my T-Bucket has an electric water pump and power steering and no AC (besides the fact that without a roof AC is useless) and the only thing belt driven is the 100 amp alternator. I can't help how much I'm losing through the transmission and U-joints because that's pretty much outside my control, but I do have converter lockup on gears 2-4 to eliminate converter losses.
I think the automatic suits the nature of the Monte more than a manual. Monte Carlo is more of a cruiser, not really a hardcore sports car at all. I like a manual transmission as much as the next guy, but on a high horsepower, high torque V8 like this car, the automatic is a hell of a lot easier to drive and hook up. And if you're bracket racing, consistency is key, the "cool factor" of a manual becomes a huge liability.

Good luck getting the monte to hook up. I've seen them struggle with a well built 350sbc. On the street anyway. Two coworkers raced outside our shop and the built monte lost to a bolt on camaro with a five liter that hooked up well. The monte spun tires the whole race and lost over and over.
Not crazy at all with its 12 and 15 degree valve angles....drop an 18 degree head on there and watch out...I build them both the key to LS WAS the heads....and for damn sure the key to a good BBC is the heads and a spot on cam choice for the stroke and head...they easily left 200 streetable horsepower on the table....pull them junker heads that dont match up with their HYD roller and drop a set of 300cc oval port AFR heads on it with a custom hyd roller using hybrid solid lifters then it would brutalize the tires at 60mph...... The LS is such a steal because the valve angle on that 6.2l you refer is what nascar used to run LOL ( where their build was 50 year old 24 degree crapola) with literally larger ports....most people dont understand just how trick the air entry angle along with insano cfm they are getting from the factory with LS.....love em both I like the LS at moderate or NA power....i like my BBC at over 1000 stock block power....my block is 52 years old and been holding over 1000 for 6 years... I'd love to see chevy reintroduce say a 496 with a 15 to 18 degree valve angle...hell you can buy 18 degree heads that use common 24 degree parts now....... That for 454 needs some boost
Yes but at an entirely different way. The bb puts down massive torque quick. A 600 hp 6.0 n/a is more of a race high rpm engine the bb is a street low rpm engine.
@@joshkrause2977 Im not saying there isn’t a case for a BB. I’m just saying the 420 WHP here isn’t exactly impressive. It’s also making 420 lb-ft so it’s not really making heaps of torque either. The big block advantages likely aren’t felt in this build. I’m sure it’s still fun…
Actually, the concern over solid rollers is not blowing the needle bearings after 7,000 miles. But solid rollers and a MANual are a great combo. Automatics have come a long way, and I have a manual valve body/switch pitch torque converter THM400...but a clutch means i'm not stuck with only two stall speeds. For the sake of argument, yes, David Vizard's book to make cheap hp can teach you how to make this HP level with a Chevy 383 for affordable prices, and not have to deal with a steaming hot big block taking up airflow space in an engine compartment in July.
In 1992 i bought a 1984 malibu station wagon. Then took a 402 big block highrise intake 750 double pumper. i had and went to work on it. It made 550+hp. Put it in the wagon with a 400 trans with 3000 stall converter and added a 12 bolt pos with i think it was 3.90 gear. (I cant remember. The front coil springs were changed. Car was lowered. It rumbled like the engine in the video. I wanted to change the engine out for a 400 SB with a 8/71 injected blower. Had the engine. Just not the blower and hardware. I rode the car for a year then sold it and moved on. I was just 23.
Can I just give a point out that the only advantage solid rollers have over hydraulic rollers is the valvetrain stability at very high rpm. Engine Masters did a test on this changing nothing but the lifters in an engine and only saw a 10hp drop at before rolling over on power at 6900rpm. Solid roller enigne carried to 7300 before rolling over.
If I had a race car and a million dollar rig and needed some friends to help me go racing, my friends would say: "I have a couple things to do in the morning, but maybe I can get away in the afternoon if I get done, so let me know what time you'll have everything ready, and if I can get away I'll come out and watch you run your race car".
He said that they never made a manual shift monte carlo ss, but that's wrong. There were 2 made. I seen one of them down here in south georgia at the swap meet.
@Ale Jr. torque is king. I really like a big Block Chevy but I also have a strong appreciation for big Block Ford's cause they're naturally a tall deck block at 10.200" versus chevs 9.800" deck height which makes the perfect stroker engine, plus a 460 is tough as hell and every factory block can take a .100" overbore easily which will net you 521 ci when stroked. Chevy can't do that so to each their own but they both will roast tires!
@@Kmecha84 I actually have 2 stock blocks 50ft from me both 10.200 Chevy and HAVE bored one .100 over(505ci but my buds have run 511ci) ......all 3 of my spare blocks are sonic checked good to .100 over...I'm running 70 over with 17 psi of boost thru the one in my car on pump gas for 6 years using an F1A-94 procharger...they are indestructible....52 year old blocks holding 1200hp its nuts...cant kill it and I've had failures that should have...... Then again I've had a 429 Ford that literally tossed a rod out the pan in law beat the pan back together welded a patch on it....put one rod, bearing and piston in and drove it several more years....lol
@@bluecollardaily2676 yeah those blocks are the tall deck grain truck engines. I was talking about the production blocks that everyone else has Kickin around
@@Kmecha84 I've built 2 and have 2...I'd say anyone can grab one in the time of LS they are stupid cheap...all register 4 bolt main...hold north of 1000hp I know personally. Allow me to use a 6.8,6.9 even 7.1 inch long rod depending on stroke... Honestly with everyone hyped about LS ( and I build those as well just completed a 402 stroker LS3 with ported LSA blower on it laid down 624whp on a baby cam ( it's for a doctor ) and 8 psi stall unlocked, 650 locked, great engines) allowed me to gather and even build my 1200+ HP BBC in my 67 Camaro DIRT cheap the F1A-94 procharger cost more than entire engine and I got a good deal on that too.... I got $1000 gas ported Probe 2618 blower pistons for my long rods for $260 complete set brand new its insanity...... I prefer the tall decks with above 4 inch stroke BUT man I know guys that buy big m short deck BBC drives me nuts.... My BBC short stroke long rod will turn near the rpm my 19 Supercharged A10 mustang will hehe.... The bbc is there on the hit instantly the Coyote starts really pulling about 300ft out it's such a daylight and dark I like em both for different reasons.....
That for 454 needs some boost
with twice the money cost.
Why on earth would you switch it back to auto?
Not a real gearhead thts why
A T5 would have been perfect in this car!
Faster
Faster, i promise you u don’t shift quicker than a machine.
Because Every Time You Shift, You Have To Break Throttle. Possibly Affecting The E.T. I Dont Know, Just My .01.
Love it! Welding inside the car with all that molten welding flash landing on the plastic and fabric interior. WTF.
I would love to have you guys drop this setup in my 83 el camino. It has a crap v6 snd sketchy trans
Brian Tucker -or even better...a small block 400. Weight loss and HP gain w/ plenty of twisting torque. Not a fan of any Big Block. ✌️
Finally!! I’ve been waiting for this lol
Glad they pray before race GOD BLESS HIS PEOPLE.. ALWAYS..
Love joe Elmore ...good to see him again.
He said that they never made a manual shift monte carlo ss, but that's wrong. There were 2 made. I seen one of them down here in south georgia at the swap meet.
He meant 5 speed but you are right monte carlo ss had a 4 speed option
Love this build
buddy put a 454 in a cutlass back in highschool. had to shoehorn it in there. no power steering for him anymore lol
nice set up, wanna see her run. props
Ford we built the same way.....bullshit.
The Chevy had an aftermarket crank, bigger heads and a bigger cam. Of course it would make more HP.
Bigger heads? Huh?
@Ale Jr. torque is king.
NOW I must say building them years and I cannot get them to not have a leak somewhere after some real street boost time haha love the modern engine seals....
Now that's a super sport Monte
Am i able to put anytype of motor in a 2003 monte carlo ss?? And what type ofr motor is best for it please let me know im looking for motor for my car and im lookong in salvage yards for my project build
I've missed Horsepower TV it's been years since I watched it when I was a teenager to adult and now you have to get the HD expanded package from Comcast Xfinity
Or you can bypass your cable stealer and get it right from their own web site.
chevy did put a stick and 454 ina monte carlo called the "mexican monte carlo"
bad4health yup id own one in a heartbeat cause iam Mexican as well 😎🇲🇽
Ken Rainwater certainly has more to worry about than how he controls his racecar!! Imagine having two beautiful daughters surrounded by men in a man's dominated sport. May god bless Ken. Hopefully his wife keeps a watchful eye on his daughters.
This monte is beautiful
Anybody remember the episode where they showed how to remove factory burnout lag..? Its where the car/truck burns out but the tire kinda jumps/skips on the street
The older guy would be a good ventriloquist
Lol nice
5:06 All his fingers are the exact same size too. Like a doll or cartoon hand
lmao
@@tipetu He's pushing some against the screen and they are getting a little bent, ya Tard. ;) lol
@@ColAngus No he is not.
9:14 - "I need, uh... water, or something..."
😂
Im trying to do a 454 swap in my 86 cutlass. I need help with a rad for it. Thats all i need help with. Cant find what one works best
looks like you need more spring with that hydraulic roller cam. it looks like they are floating on your graph.
oh, i bet the stock internals of that car (even the minor parts) will hold up real well with a 454 in it. 2 weeks at most before an explosion of nuts and bolts everywhere!
that’s why you have the motor stripped down, and rebuilt with A-R-P Bolts to make sure that the motor doesn’t “grenade” itself
Makes me want to finish my 85 ss
Did you finish it??
@@Lorenzo-vb1so unfortunately no. Thanks to my daughter and wife the car completely rusted underneath
When did Luke Brian start building performance engines
Awesome MONTE CARLO
Those gains where from corrected air / fuel not the hydraulic lifters. But those hydraulic lifters are nice
I shoved a 396 inside my 83 Monte carlo. Barley had enough room to reach my spark plugs. Plus had custom headers to fit
That car is EPIC
