Well, after 14 years of Brazilian jiu jitsu, my instructor Adam Metcalf and Rigan Machado presented me with my black belt last night. Watching this video and listening to him talk in class today and yesterday humbles me. Long way to go and it seems I’ve only taken the first step. By the way, I started at 42 years of age and I’m now 56. Never say never.
I didn't start BJJ until I was 42, First with Relson then with Roller, got my black belt 12 years later (so overcome with emotion I cried like a baby) and then met Rickson at a seminar, just being in his presence was an honor, so humble and respectful. Gracie BJJ is been one of the greatest gifts this life could give. I'm now 58, still roll daily, I cannot imagine life without this. it's an honor to put my Gi and wrap that belt and to the real men out there that do this, love my brothers, tough men, kind hearts!!!
I can proudly say that as a white belt back in the 90's I got choked out (all the way!) by Rigan. I woke up and looked at him and he's like "Don, you must learn to tap out!". Great advice.
This is why Rickson Gracie deserves the Red Belt. Rigan Machado and his family are very humble and extremely skilled in BJJ. What a classy guy Rigan is.
I've had the privilege to have seminars with both of these guys in their later years. rickson did not spar mainly because of injuries but his knowledge was unprecendeted of positions and finetuning the details of basic moves you "think" you knew. Rigan on the other hand was sparring and teaching. I saw him roll through 5 black belts all while holding conversations. i've never seen a guy that large, do handstand passing, rolls and appear to be a feather weight in his movements. Both guys to me are just phenoms and that is the bottom line
Crazy part is you can see Rigan is giving everything in his might and Rickson looks so relaxed on the bottom like “just another day at the gym”. That’s why Rickson will forever be the greatest BJJ practitioner ever.
@@lucasgreen4052Rolls was the pioneer of the family. He was smart enough to venture out in search of making BJJ a more well rounded art and studied other martial art forms who's principles were incorporated into BJJ. He was the risk taker and adventurer of the family.
Rickson done changed his life. Cool because this man just reassured me about humbleness over revenge or anger. This man is legit and humble. Amazing stuff right here 🙏🏻
Rigan taught one of the first Mexican if not THE first Mexican black belt and I'm honored to know that my heritage has a little part of history in this sport.

@Brian Jones He was 11-0 in mma. I wouldn't call that unproven. Plus, with Vale Tudo style fights in Brazil and real fights that were recorded like Hugo Darte and Yoji Anjo, there's not really an aspect of martial arts in which Rickson should be referred to as "unproven". His status as a legend is well-deserved!
Hybrid MMA fighters will eat Gracie's a live and demolished their invisibility cloak that they're selling to their students. Why Rickson didn't fight Sakuraba after Sakuraba demolished almost his entire family

Rickson is obviously one of the most skilled the World has ever known, but what makes Rickson a true Legend is his intelligence. He is truly brilliant, I can honestly say I've never had the privilege of listening to him without learning something new. Every interview, every conversation, regardless, I always learn something and get a new perspective, it's blows my mind everytime, the biggest lesson is when you think you know something, the truth is you don't know what you don't know and Rickson will humble anyone with just a 5 minute conversation. Too many people think they know, and think they an expert, but they just scratching the surface, the tip of the iceberg, only the exceptional go deep and when they get to the bottom, they start digging to go even deeper, that's true expertise.
I don’t practice Brazilian Jiu Jitsu formally but I have the utmost respect for the art and the old school masters. No trash talking or bad mouthing or out of ring antics like you see in a lot of modern day mma athletes. -these guys Rickson and Rigan exemplify what it is to be martial artists.
I studied BJJ for a few years in my early 20's. My instructor was Steve Watkins, an ex-Navy SEAL who knew Rickson Gracie as a friend and learned the art from him as well. Steve always spoke highly of Rickson and the Gracie family and although I never met Rickson, I have always admired and respected him. BTW, I was in the best shape of my life when I grappled. My body felt as one with the ground. Hard to explain. :)
Two masters no doubt. Rickson basically refused his Red Belt..said he wasn't worthy, wasn't at that level yet..his masterful peers thought he was. The most masterful feeling he still had more to learn and develop...that's a life's lesson for me.

A big knock on both Rickson and Rigan is that their submission grappling records. Which is unfair in my opinion because Brazilian media or whatever else should have done a better job of preserving the records of the events where the two supposedly won countless matches. I saw one site claiming Rigan has 7 wins and 8 losses with no submission victories which sounds utterly preposterous. Anyone who knows Rigan claims he is on a different level and I absolutely believe it as well. Records do not mean much in reality. These two are absolute heroes to me. But I hate it when people doubt and hate because sherdog or bjjheroes doesn't document them because these men are worthy of all the respect in the world.
