@@TheResidentialTourists Actually, they don't look like us. Truth be told. As a matter of fact, they look NOTHING like us, but we continue to think we are those people. They hate us the same way today as they did when they sold us. Personally, I want their land, but I don't want a damn thing to do with them.

Foreigners are not alone in being targeted. Even us Kenyans go through the same thing. When we leave Nairobi for the village or other remote parts of the country, we are seen to be rich and we are expected to pay more. Personally, I have gone through that here in Nairobi. For some reason, my face gives of the rich person vibes. I once went to Ngara market and was charged double for an item. The trader had the guts to tell me that I was rich and could afford the price. Don't feel alone in this. When you come to Nairobi, you can ask around. We are used to it to the extent it no longer bother us. When we get overcharged, we just walk to the next vendor.

You are very right. Even when you move to a new neighborhood or go to shop in a new neighborhood you will be overcharged. It has happened to me a million times as a Nairobian. The way to go about it is to learn to negotiate and know at least basic Swahili for the new comers.

Wow, once again great video family! You guys hit the points dead on, I must say and agree with. However, for me with time the adjustment got easier. Yes, i agree that we "Black Americans" will always be viewed as different and a target. As for me, it can be a two-sided coin. Sometimes it allows me a privilege that even with an abundant of resources in American I could never enjoy the same feeling in life as non-Blacks do on a daily basis! Unfortunately, on the other hand, it can bring an added expense at times and disingenuous agenda motivated relationships. However, when adding up the pros and cons compared to life as a Black man in America, there's no question! I've also found out that as time goes on and you learn to speak and most importantly, understand Swahili and the behaviors of the various cultures; you will learn how to maneuver through this society the same way as the so many different ethnic people here do as well!

I love you guys. Let me say something.
I'm probably 20 years older than you.
My assessment - it is NOT 'it is what it is'
You can gain the respect. And you are
right! It is on you and the rest of us
    that touch ground. The solution?
Learn the language. And the respect will
come. They are going to feel like we all
have money, until we let them know once
and for all - that's not the case.
Learning Swahilli should be in Category
one once you decide to live in a place
where they speak the language. At least
    the numbers and casual conversation.
We're done until we [learn as much as
    possible] the language.Peace and Blessings
    unto to you.

Hello my brother and sister in Rwanda. I just had an idea about the issue of price in the grocery store. One thing that you guys could do when shopping for food is to go to management ( preferably the store manager ) to request a list of prices for food that you normally buy. For example, if you buy fruit juice on a weekly basis, have the manager write that price on that list of items you have presented. Also, offer that person a few dollars for helping you out that way. Just a suggestion in trying to NOT get ripped off because people tend to think you’re rich. Lastly, have that list readily available when checking out with the cashier. God Bless.

I came in relaxed. But since i am in N. Africa none of the drama yall are dealing with. Nobody is targeting me.
I use the fact they may think i have money as a power tool. Meaning it's mine and you need to convince me if i want to spend it. If i don't like the price i walk away. As for taxis, i quote them a price before the ride. And throw them the money and jet before they try and get greedy. Lol

Spot-on on the religious harmony especially in Kenya. Over here no one cares about one's religion unless certain sensitivities are in play.
Although predominantly Christian, the country's constitution is secular and everyone has equal rights on beliefs and worship.
Christmas,Eid, Easter and Diwali festivities are for all respective believers and non-believers.
Schools don't discriminate and options for examinable religious subjects are provided.
Some families with members of different beliefs live harmoniously.
Despite mischievous attempts to pit religions against each other, Kenyans have resisted to succumb to such things.

That feeling of being a “foreigner” is part of living among diverse cultures and communities… tribes, if you will. Africa has the most diverse DNA on the planet! This translates to certain challenges that we all must learn to overcome. E.g. A simple road trip between Mombasa and Nairobi (about 350 miles) will expose to about 5 different communities with separate cultures and languages.
Africa is the repository of human diversity so Part of living on this continent is learning how accept and to live with this reality. Now add the effects of rapid modernization and globalization! Ever wondered why the average African speaks 3 languages effortlessly? It’s a product of so much diversity.
    Welcome to Kenya and Africa!
May the Almighty and our ancestors continue to guide you on your journey.

Deep conversations here. I don't know that the money target in Africa can compare in weight to being a target in the US, in race terms. I think one is the notion of "westerners being rich" so could leave you open to some kind of exploitation while the other is acutely negative, a hate in a sense, a you don't belong here kinda thing, laced with real threat to life (the moment you walk out the door). That's a huge weight carry! Well here, you will meet guys all about the money grab, then the "savior mentality" largely informed by poverty or misconceptions about the west.
Yes, the internal wrestle, conflict, the comparison, is real. But hopefully, with time you acclimatize, you get the nuances about this new home Kenya and find it a second home. Wishing you guys greater peace.

HI family, thank you for your real transparent truths. I can see both of your viewpoints. Since being seen as a foreigner is valid, but it makes one feel unsettling as as Diasporians we want to be accepted as we are home. I think when you meet and form new friendships and through bonding, you will be home through culture, language and those feelings will leave. Your peace will come.

I just for the life of me don’t understand why African Americans with all the videos on UA-cam teaching about how to operate in Africa, many still think they’re targeted when even locals who look rich get overcharged. Locals who live abroad and return face the same fate. AAs are not necessarily targeted and it’s not personal.
Please learn the culture of bargaining and walk away if you believe you’re being overcharged. If you walk away there’s no shame and sometimes the seller might call you back for a lower price.
Learn a few local words related courtesy, your price is too much, I won’t pay this price, I’m not buying and so forth.

Greetings Residential Tourists, The Muhammad’s. King Muhammad is expressing a violet point as I am seeing this divide and conquer sediment, or attitude for years now from watching videos shared by the diaspora who have visited or relocated to the continent of Africa. No doubt that the continent of Africa is the origin of all Black people around the world and as such we have the rights per our African ancestry to territories and traditions, on the continent of Africa. One thing for sure, colonialism has done a job on continental Africans and Africans in the diaspora cognitive perception. I am thinking we should establish our own individual like the colored people of South Africa have done with a focus on working with our local brothers and sisters there on the continent. Make no mistake about it, there are indeed Africans in the diaspora who are well off and there are those who aren’t, however that’s no reason for our continental African brothers and sisters preying on Africans in the diaspora. One thing for sure, there is a lot of work to be done in our relationships. Thanks for sharing Muhammad’s.

I was treated differently when I brought my American wife and kids to Kenya. Even my own relatives charged me premium for offering their services, e.g when I rented my cousin's large SUV to move around.

I am thinking we should establish our own tribe like the color’s have done in South America with a focus on working with our local brothers and sisters there on the continent. Make no mistake about it, there are indeed Africans in the diaspora who are well off and there are those who aren’t, however that’s no reason for our continental African brothers and sisters preying on Africans in the diaspora. Thanks for being honest 🙏🏿. I’m sorry about the challenges, I am kenyan & as a sister, please don’t just trust any kenyan, especially at this time since this new government took over standards of living has sky rocked and if you look like you have money you could be a target. May the Most High continue guiding and protecting my favourite couple, the Mohammads 🙏🏿

Brother, as an American you are intially identified with the priviledge that comes with being from the first World. Africans feel just as targeted when Europeans and Americans come and buy our raw materials at rock bottom prices even when they are aware they are ripping us off. Is it fair- absolutely not but as an African who travels this always happens when you go to places especially where there is no custom of having the price out in the open. I hope it gets better with time but trust me the locals take advantage of fellow Africans who live in the diaspora too, so it is a tax that is almost unavoidable.

That is your trauma. But all foreigners are treated that way. Including white foreigners. There is a certain expectations from the locals.

Home is how u make it. Dont let anybody make u feel like a target! Do.nit.accept.it!
    This is your home.
Having a "feeling" and it being actual is a different issue. You sure u arent bringing over US "target" issues?
Then again, being "targetted" because somebody is "looking up to you" has to feel positive.

Did u guys know Kenya has Sharia (Islamic Law)?
This is what Freedom of religion is all about. Imagine the conutry's president wearing robes and celebrating with Muslims in the mosque! And Idd being a public holiday.
Now try n imagine J Biden in Muslim robes😂😂
