My kid used to call any day where it was sunny Sunday. Night was, of course, “not Sunday”. He also had a funny habit of using measurements of time to emphasize things. Instead of, “I love you a lot,” we got “I love you three weeks.” If he was very enthusiastic he might even love you, “a whole year”
You know how there's the phrase "I love you to the moon and back"? I was into astronomy so I used to escalate that to things like the whole solar system, etc.
I used to call Parmesan cheese “snow cheese” and would ask for “snow cheese” when I’d eat pasta. Now it’s a family thing we STILL use, especially for the kids in the family. Still proud of that.

It's less of a "I don't know the word" and more of "I'm currently blanking on the word and I'm scrambling through my readily available vocabulary to find it but can't, so I shall improvise." Yes! This is totally normal and definitely happens to adult native speakers (not just kids or non-natives). I think you unintentionally did just that, since there's a name for a new word, it's called a "neologism", but new-ism definitely works too :). Anyways, I love these kind of things, just shows how creative people can be!
I'm sorry, but as a linguistics student, this is really interesting to me, particularly in terms of how logical they are. Like, a lot of these are probably correct in a different language, or at least very close to something you would say.
Yeah! There are clear patterns here of a productive system of compounding / modifiers that allows the children to work around the forgotten/unknown word by analogy in a predictable way. Just gotta tap into Child Logic to understand why the things are analogous. And the system clearly sticks around. I find the moment where Matt objects to "finger legs" as toes interesting in this way. His argument is basically that "leg fingers" are toes because they're the fingers attached to the legs, while "finger legs" are arms because they're the legs that have fingers. And that *makes sense* in comparison to most other compounds in English (and Norwegian, which is where my bias towards calling these constructions compounds comes from).
It's also common with processing disorders and people who are strong visual thinkers. Basically, you might create incredible things, but you're likely to be mistaken for an idiot your whole life because most everyone values verbal communication first and fast, and your value increases with how verbal you are.

In my language, the verb "to swallow" is more like "to swallow in". When my dad was a very young kid, he had to throw up, but didn't know the word, so told my grandmother he had to "swallow out".

Two funny things that my younger brother used to say: Instead of yesterday he would say "Lasterday", probably because he heard us say things like "last week" and "last month" and thought that the same rule should apply to days. He loved to make up questions for us to answer, but if we got it wrong instead of just saying "Wrong!", "that's not right!" or even "incorrect", he would say "Discorrect" with the most blank unemotional face I've ever seen on a six year old.

there's actually a term for many of these examples called "idiosyncratic speech", which is where someone uses normal words in abnormal ways (e.g., calling milk "cereal water"). i have autism so i used to struggle alot with idiosyncratic speech when i was younger, but now i do much better with expressing myself in ways that others understand.
This really gives a little insight on both psychology and mechanisms of how potentially first languages had formed in the past. I think we can study it through kids. When I was 5 or 6 yo I wrote a little story, and that notebook has survived until today. There I found some peculiar words like "green usefullness" or "knockable giant"

The way these kids talk is basically how a lot of languages work. In German an ambulance is a "sick wagon", the hospital is the "sick house", a butcher is a "flesh monger", etc.
"Cemetery" entered the English language (via Old French and Latin) from Ancient Greek "κοιμητήρῐον" ("koimētḗrion" in the Latin alphabet), meaning "sleeping chamber". In Ancient Greek it could literally mean a bedroom or figuratively a burial site, but it seems to have lost the former meaning when borrowed into Latin. The Old English word "līctūn" literally means "corpse yard". Modern English has "lichyard", but I couldn't find any quotes older than the 19th century, so it's probably just a literary revival. Though "lich/lych" survived in related words-English cemeteries often have a "lichgate". Basically, none of those kids were far off the mark. ("lich" in the sense of an animate, undead corpse comes from 20th century fantasy fiction, and of course the meaning of "undead spellcaster" comes from D&D)
A bit of a side point, but, as I understand it the root of līc is also where we get the suffix -ly from. Before Old English, līc could just mean "body", or "form", though I think that still lived on poetically in Old English. But when you have, say, frēondlīċ (“friendly”) it can be thought of as "friendform". I just think stuff like this is interesting lol.

And there are compound words, e.g. "līcþēote" meaning "pore", literally "body pipe". Presumably you could refer to a living person's pores ;-) In the broader sense of "body, form" which it had in earlier languages, it's related to Modern English "-ly" (-līċ) and words such as "likeness" (ġelīcnes). Supposedly even the verb to "like" someone/something is also related, the reconstructed Proto-Germanic "līkāną" apparently means "to conform, to be agreeable, to please, to like". I'm no linguist of course, this is just what I've read on wiktionary.

Story time: as a kid I got really into american football for a few weeks. In one instance I was in a car with my dad (who was driving), mom, and grandma. I was describing a football game I had watched and didn't know the name of the two minute warning, so I yelled "red light!" because the score bug turned red. The thing is, my dad was colorblind, and we were approaching an intersection, and the light was not in fact red. Dad slammed on the brakes. Thankfully no one was behind us and we did not get rear-ended, but grandma was pretty shaken up and got out of the car to go puke in the median. I then yelled "what the hell are you doing?" at my puking grandma for some reason.

Actually one of the reason I like Matt's videos is the effort he puts in to rendering the idiosyncrasies of text into audio form.
My kid used to call any day where it was sunny Sunday. Night was, of course, “not Sunday”. He also had a funny habit of using measurements of time to emphasize things. Instead of, “I love you a lot,” we got “I love you three weeks.” If he was very enthusiastic he might even love you, “a whole year”

I used to call Parmesan cheese “snow cheese” and would ask for “snow cheese” when I’d eat pasta. Now it’s a family thing we STILL use, especially for the kids in the family. Still proud of that.
I do this still sometimes, and I've been an adult for 8 years. It's less of a "I don't know the word" and more of "I'm currently blanking on the word and I'm scrambling through my readily available vocabulary to find it but can't, so I shall improvise." It's really is a fantastic source for new -isms.
Yes! This is totally normal and definitely happens to adult native speakers (not just kids or non-natives). I think you unintentionally did just that, since there's a name for a new word, it's called a "neologism", but new-ism definitely works too :). I'm sorry, but as a linguistics student, this is really interesting to me, particularly in terms of how logical they are. Like, a lot of these are probably correct in a different language, or at least very close to something you would say.
Yeah! There are clear patterns here of a productive system of compounding / modifiers that allows the children to work around the forgotten/unknown word by analogy in a predictable way. Just gotta tap into Child Logic to understand why the things are analogous.
And the system clearly sticks around. I find the moment where Matt objects to "finger legs" as toes interesting in this way. His argument is basically that "leg fingers" are toes because they're the fingers attached to the legs, while "finger legs" are arms because they're the legs that have fingers. And that *makes sense* in comparison to most other compounds in English (and Norwegian, which is where my bias towards calling these constructions compounds comes from).
A direct translation of “chicken burger” is very much correct in Dutch*.

there's actually a term for many of these examples called "idiosyncratic speech", which is where someone uses normal words in abnormal ways (e.g., calling milk "cereal water"). i have autism so i used to struggle alot with idiosyncratic speech when i was younger, but now i do much better with expressing myself in ways that others understand.

The way these kids talk is basically how a lot of languages work. In German an ambulance is a "sick wagon", the hospital is the "sick house", a butcher is a "flesh monger", etc.

A bit of a side point, but, as I understand it the root of līc is also where we get the suffix -ly from. Before Old English, līc could just mean "body", or "form", though I think that still lived on poetically in Old English. Story time: as a kid I got really into american football for a few weeks. In one instance I was in a car with my dad (who was driving), mom, and grandma. I was describing a football game I had watched and didn't know the name of the two minute warning, so I yelled "red light!" because the score bug turned red. The thing is, my dad was colorblind, and we were approaching an intersection, and the light was not in fact red. Dad slammed on the brakes. Thankfully no one was behind us and we did not get rear-ended, but grandma was pretty shaken up and got out of the car to go puke in the median. I then yelled "what the hell are you doing?" at my puking grandma for some reason.

When I was little, I had heard of things being done in the “olden days”. Naturally, when I talked about things that happen in the modern day I would call it “the nowen days”. My mother thought that was cute and never corrected me.

The 'No Home Boy' one might have been intentional on the kid's part. In the cartoon Steven Universe, there's an in-universe book series called The No Home Boys about two brothers on the run across the country with no home or family. The kid probably picked it up from the show.
