Fun fact: Pizza Tower has had crossovers with both of these games! There was a crossover comic with Treasure Tech and Pizza Tower as well as the fact that Peppino is playable in Antonball and also had a comic with them. Pizza Tower has also gotten a huge playstyle change since the Sage demo, such as a heat meter that gives enemies new moves the more defeat them. Also, I really liked this video! Great job!

lol it's funny reading this now when Pizza Tower finally got its full release and the Heat Meter is now completely excised. Probably the most changes I've seen in an indie game during development I've seen yet.
The creator of Antonball also made an artwork to promote his new game: Antonblast.
This artwork is virtually made by Anton himself in which he promote his game and make fun of Peppino.
We can definetely say that Peppino, Anton, Treasure Tech Doom and Mort are all in the same universe

The dev actually made a more original follow up! It’s called Psycutlery and it’s just like Psycho Waluigi but a bit more fleshed out. It’s only a demo for now, but it’s still very good.

@@hotcyder you should cover the sugary spire public demo. its a pizza tower fan game with beautiful visuals and fun gameplay. And the music is absolutely fantastic! The game is an AU of pizza tower. and has a different artstyle and color palate. the game also has very intense escape sequences.
Man, it's weird how Nintendo didn't capitalize on Wario Land as a franchise. Not just because of the sheer quality of the existing games (especially 4), but the opportunity it allows for games designers to experiment with new ideas. Glad to see people outside of Nintendo fulfilling that potential.
Didn't they? If you include Super Mario Land and Super Mario Land 2, they made 7 Land games, if you exclude them, they made 5. But I'm not sure why they stopped using it. Maybe because they started the New Super Mario Bros. franchise. But that really doesn't really have a lot of experimentation, I think. :P
Yeah but the original Super Mario Land only translated SMB1 and SMB3/World to handheld. Wario is quite a departure.
@@KingThrillgore Wario was created because Nintendo R and D 1 were finished with Mario Land 2 and wanted to focus on something that they themselves made. The problem is that R and D 1 was shutdown in 2005. So Nintendo doesn't who how to continue Wario Land without them.
Because after the Wii they stopped caring about allowing game designers to experiment with new ideas. To be fair, so did the rest of the industry. There's always exceptions of course. But Nintendo used to be the company with the crazy new ideas.
@@alvareo92 Mario Odyssey is the closest we'll get to a new Wario Land. Odyssey is the only Mario game that can compete with Wario in terms of exploration. There's also Wario Land 4 on Switch.

can't forget that the new game plus mode for Shovel Knight: King of Cards, which also already have the character, King Knight having the same moveset as Wario (with the shoulder bashing and all) also uses the fortune-life mechanic.
I wanna see a Wario Land metroidvania! With how open the games are, it'd be cool to just go all out on it.
Wario Land 3 is definetly the closest to that, but I'd for sure like something more Metroidy

Yeah I use to watch a lotta popeye as a youngling! This film honestly had lots and lots of heart y'know, a lotta character, a lotta life to be had it seems like a movie you'd love for the wrong reasons but no I genuinely love it for the right especially when you consider the catalog of movies directed by the director of this movie.

4 is a little better. Shake it is a lot slower in gameplay

Shake It (or Shake Dimension as it's know where I am) is really good, for sure. But I don't think it's as solid as the games that came before it. Still high quality and well worth playing, and I love Production IG's work on the graphics.
@@NintendanGX Fair enough. I have wario land 4 on my nn3ds and shake it on my wii u. Trying to play through wario land 4 as a completionist is tough and unforgiving in wl4 and shake it can be hard but I found the checklist of shit to complete more fun in shake it then completing 4. And tbf and honest I have roughly put the same amount of time in both. I'm at a similar point in both games in terms of how far I've ever got.

Wario even did what Sonic Team couldnt do: utilizing the roll mechanic as a fun way to solve puzzles in short bursts.
Sonic isn't a puzzle platformer.

Pizza tower is my most anticipated game of 2023 right now.
Wario Land 2 actually introduced the nonlinear level design before Wario Land 3. There are several stages that have alternate goals, though not every stage does. The only way to beat the game is to find all of the hidden objectives, like sleeping through the alarm or going to the cellar in the first level. Obviously it's not in every single stage, but it was why they expanded on it in 3.
I'd only heard of Pizza Tower before this video. Nice to see they aren't the only devs keeping the old wah alive.
As for other potential Wario-likes, Shovel Knight: King of Cards also seems to take heavy inspiration from Wario Land.

Fun fact, the "Dodge Ball" Mario Bros mechanic from Antonball actually comes from an officially licensed PC port of Mario Bros. made by Hudson Soft called Punch Ball Mario Bros. The stage at 6:18 is identical to Punch Ball's map too.
His virtual boy outing pretty much was the only reason to pick up that platform... and it also would later inspire Mutant Mudds with its mechanic of leaping into the background to engage with an extended level.
AntonBlast also includes the mechanic in a really neat way!

Lord of the Bats is another Wario-like to an extent, though it also takes a bit from NES platformers like Chip N' Dale and Darkwing Duck
Also, two quick corrections about Pizza Tower: the protagonist's name is Peppino, not Pizza Guy; and Ren and Stimpy has been specifically labled by the game's lead developer in interviews as not being an inspiration - though SpongeBob and Courage the Cowardly Dog supposedly were. I can certainly see why you'd think both of those though and they're not at all egregious errors.
yo, designer for LotB here. more inspired by DKC than Wario, but our protagonist is definitely a muscular badass with a hankering for money.

Wario is my favorite Nintendo character (tied with Samus). I try to include some Wario influence in all of my games, but I haven't really taken it as far as I should yet.
For one game series I've made in particular, it has a pretty absurd concept, but the game itself doesn't go as far as it could.

We live in a glorious time. Nintendo maybe stuck in tunnel vision, but it looks like the fans once again are going to pick up their slack.

I want to create a wario-like in the vein of Wario Land 3, my personal favorite. Returning to old levels that vary on their day-night cycle with new abilities to unlock more progression is such good fun. I also love that the story is a game trapped in a music box with all the level themes reusing a part of the main theme. It's brilliantly thought out and has so much soul.

i am extremely surprised to see that now wario land 4 is considered the best. when i was in the wario land community 4 years ago more or less the fan favorite was by a landslide wario land 3. still, it is amazing that wario land is getting some love now :). my favorite wario land game is wihout a doubt wario land 2, its non-linear structure and the multiple endings made it extremely fun for me
Wario is the amalgamation of all the personality Nintendo doesn't let Mario have.
While I love Wario World and Wario Land:Shake It! like there's no tomorrow and I'm quite surprised WL4 has gained so much of a following (last time I checked, WL3 was considered the "best"), this video has so much effort put into it that I love it.

Way more embracing the Wario like nature with platforming.
Pizza Tower is pretty much the same, scrapping some features like coop, but that was only to further polish the Gameplay for a single player.
I really hope to see more games that base inspiration from the wario land games just of how obscure but good they genuinely were.
there is a WarioWare microgame that uses first-person realistic arms wearing Wario's biker gloves. In that game you crush apples by tapping A. There needs to be a mod of treasure tech that adds those in for the fisticuffs
Here's hoping we ever get a Wario Odyssey, think that formula would work really well in 3D

Wario-likes, Zelda-likes, METROIDvanias, Nintendo really has a lot of core game styles named directly after some of their games, as well as basically creating the modern 2D platformer, and perfecting the 3D platformer.

I only knew Pizza Tower of these, thank you for introducing to new Wario like games! I love your Wario analyses, they are much needed. Wario Land must never be forgotten, masterpieces, all of them.
Treasure Techland has to be one of the most creative games/mods i’ve seen in a while.
Rather than Mario Bros, I would say Antonball gets its inspiration on Mario Clash (the Virtual Boy sequel to Mario Bros)
Actually, what the inspiration actually comes from is Punchball Mario Bros. When you compare the two, they're almost identical.
Actually, it comes from an old officially licensed PC port/sequel of Mario Bros. made by Hudson Soft called Punch Ball Mario Bros. The mechanic is exactly the same and one of the stages in Antonball is identical too.
Mr. Game & Watch is crying right now because Wario stole his job which is now being stolen by the Wario-likes.

Interesting deep-dive on the series. It's a shame that the wario series have been completely abandoned by nintendo, but it's great to see that people take these concepts and make something equally as good, or even better!

I really love the Wario style, but only knew about Pizza Tower and Treasure Tech, so I need to check out Antonball. I suggested the name "piecemeal platformer" for WL4/WL3(ish)/Pizza Tower once to a friend because of the way the levels often loop back onto themselves. I'd say Drill Dozer is in the same subgenre as well.
Don't mind me, coming from UA-cam suggestions just a month late - anyway, this is an extremely good video for such a small and austere channel, the narrative is so well driven, and Wario games are such a hard not to love topic! Glad I got here, thanks for the video!

Oh my god thank you for this video. I love wario and all everyone seems to talk about when talking about wario is warioware, which is good, but I wanted to see something like wario's other games so I really appreciate you making a video about wario-likes. I didn't even know wario-likes existed until know.
While not _that_ type of Wario-likes, WarioWare got its fair share of clones, and TF2Ware (a server mod for Team Fortress 2) is how I got to know that Wario apparently has his own experimental series of games.

Wow I haven't heard of any of these, but especially the second game looks phenomenally wacky and fun! I thought you were gonna mention more games in the like of Wario ware, like last year's the Devils and the details in the Jackbox party pack 7. The director of this game once even said that Wario ware was one of his favorite game series.
