Wario Land 4 was one of my childhood classics and most-played, so from the beginning of the gameplay footage I thought "this is eerily similar to that, but it's so niche it can't be". I'm feeling very validated right now hearing that it's a spiritual successor!
Man, he didn't mention how during the final boss's boss rush, Peppino goes completely berserk when confronted with the fact he'll have to fight all the bosses again. His patience has completely run out and the scared, nervous part of him is shoved into a corner as pure, unstoppable rage overtakes him, to the point where a single attack takes out half of a health bar.
BTW, if you're hungry for more, keep an eye on Antonblast later this year. While it's more in line with Wario Land 4, down to it's pixel art, it's a mix of Wario and Crash. Anton is also confirmed to have a Switch release as well, so keep an eye out for the Ninidie directs.

Peppino is a real italian name. It's also traditional in Italy to be named after food, or for foods to be named after people. You could name any Italian dish you could think of and there's guaranteed to be hundreds if not thousands of people in Italy with it as their first or last name. In other words, if you walked into Italy and introduced yourself as Peppino Spaghetti, literally no one would bat an eye.

I love when someone takes a concept of a gameplay style and not just make their own game out of it but expand on it too. this game does that to wario land... now all I need is a reimagining of ristar and my wishes would be complete
2023 seems really good for gaming so far. DS remake, Hi-Fi Rush, upcoming RE4 remake and SF6. And smaller indie gems like this. Not my type of game, but really cool to see.
Pizza tower not only lived up to my expectations, but surpassed them, i was blasted away from how much the game has changed, and how much content and abilities there are, and beautifully crafted soundtrack. Pizza tower had so much love and tomato sauce poured into it and like you said, not many triple A games give off that feeling anymore, you can tell they really took their time putting the game together and just having a blast, 10 pepperoni's out of 10. My 4 year wait was worth it.
Playing an artisan-crafted indie like Pizza Tower after playing AAA games feels like eating at a bunch of corporate big chain pizza restaurants that are ok enough... and then finding that humble local joint, with a man of proper Italian blood like Peppino, who has made pizza all his life with love and dedication. And then you know. Then you know what true Italian pizza and a genuinely great and fulfilling meal is supposed to be.
A good reason this game is good is because of something I like to call the “big jack horner effect” with so many games that do the same routine of having a gimmick, bringing diversity, or just plain making it special, it’s just flat out a good old fashioned game, no gimmicks, no strings at all
I recently played through this game and I really enjoyed it! Coming from someone who didn't really like Wario Land 4, I feel like it fixed the problems that game had. The main collectibles needed for progression are a lot easier to find and the escapes felt genuinely fun compared to Wario Land 4 where I felt frustrated every time it came up. My biggest issue with the game though is the Jumpscares they put into the game. There's two points where there are jumpscares, on the title screen as an easter egg, and an end game level. The easter egg one seems like it's just a haha funny easter egg, but I also know there's been quite a few people who have had it happen while they were trying to set up the game or their controller and got a bad first impression from it considering it also crashes your game. The other level with Jumpscares isn't as bad, but it can get annoying pretty quickly. Going into a silly platformer and getting jumpscared without any prior warning dosen't feel good. I genuienly wish there was some kind of warning that the game has them in the first place, or some way to turn them off. Yes, this bothered me that much. Besides that, this game's great though!
What's the jumpscare for the end level? I knew about the title screen but i haven't played it and i hate jumpscares so a warning and heads up would be nice.
So far, this year's off to a pretty great start. We got Hi-Fi Rush, an awesome remake of Dead Space, this, and Nintendo shadow dropped Metroid Prime Remastered at their last direct. It's certainly better than last year where it felt like after Elden Ring, there wasn't much that grabbed my attention (before you mention GoW, I don't have a PS5. I'll play it when it hits PC).
I never knew about it until last week until a friend on steam was playing it, they played it for like 20 hours and i thought "wait what is pizza tower?" and when i saw gameplay I immediately put it on my wishlist. the artstyle looked a little weird i'll be honest, but now, having bought and played a bit of it, I've fallen in love with it
I mean a couple things that can be done later on is to bring the Noise back in as a playable character, introduce a couple DLC floors where one is more levels of Gustavo and Brick and another uses the special guest trend to make more gimmicks based on obscure or indie games
I haven’t finished the video yet but when you mentioned how to have to run back to the start of the final level before the pizza man wakes up, I realized that it’s a homage to warios land shake it where every level, you get to a certain point and run back to the start before the timer runs out and you have to start back from the checkpoint.
My go-to description of this game for anyone interested is “it’s a little bit of Wario Land 4, a little bit of Sonic CD, a little bit of Super Metroid, a little bit of Earthworm Jim, a little bit of Jazz Jackrabbit, with a healthy dose of a visual mix of Ren & Stimpy, Rocky’s Modern Life, Courage the Cowardly Dog and Newgrounds”. The game really does define description sometimes, and it really is more than just a spiritual successor to Wario Land 4 (which it also is, just more to it).
I also love that with the debug menu you can play as the 3 boss AND I LOVE IT SO SOOOOO MUCH It so fun to see wat different here to see wat change here And wat isn’t done
5:24 it probably is actually both. Have not played the game, but from the other ranks having 2 words usually, it seems like it is suppose to say "Pizza Perfect" and that just fits in this theme.

8:30 pointing out that the reason why that TV is there is because the main antagonist is there to laught and mock at your suffering, the hovering TV is there to laught at pepino's reactions
My only negative thing about this game that comes to mind is that the Dash (or Sprint) button moves you in the direction you are facing. It's unecessary. I messed up so many times because of that. You should dash only when you press the Dash button AND a direction to sprint in that direction.

I'll play it when it hits PC).
i always wondered what the preview image of the fourth boss in the opening would've been without being cloaked in shadow
You can see it if you beat that boss, and then go for the fight again :)
The going up and down mechanic reminds me of big tower tiny square
I never knew about it until last week until a friend on steam was playing it, they played it for like 20 hours and i thought "wait what is pizza tower?" and when i saw gameplay I immediately put it on my wishlist. the artstyle looked a little weird i'll be honest, but now, having bought and played a bit of it, I've fallen in love with it
The art is so crazy I love it.
The animations remind me of Pilot Red Sun
I gotta check this one out. The wall running is giving me Buster Busts Loose vibes.
I hope GDQ did a run of this in summer cause I really want to see the speedrun with an audience
It also has a drop of "Tamale Loco" (another 2D platformer) where you need 1 of each specific ingredient for your food (Burrito).
I also love that with the debug menu you can play as the 3 boss
AND I LOVE IT SO SOOOOO MUCH
It so fun to see wat different here to see wat change here
And wat isn’t done
5:24 it probably is actually both. Have not played the game, but from the other ranks having 2 words usually, it seems like it is suppose to say "Pizza Perfect" and that just fits in this theme.
I know what game to play next! thanks!
The artstyle feels so much like a cartoon from marc du pontavice, and the high-speed wackiness of it feels like how I remember my first sonic game.
“Adorable rats” fucking throws a bomb at one
You forgot to state that peppino has a gun
When this game was a demo around the 2018-2019 Sage point, It was FILLED to the brim with creativity &collectives couldn't wait for full release even if I forgot about it from then Past months!
The spiderman pizza song was inspired by an song composed irl by a guy named Peppino Turco
his transition from being scared to homicidal maniac as you build a combo is pretty funny
I want to play this game so bad, but my computer that can run it just died!
I really hope it comes out on other platforms
i've been playing a lot of indie games recently like rain world (love this game btw), shovel knight etc. and im deffinitly gonna buy pizza tower
"...it's more like hi-fi.. ms paint... rockos modern life"
i dunno how you did it but you exactly summed pizza tower up in those words
got it so hard i had to sub
watched cybershell play this, got me psyched buy it and give it a go
My best way to describe pizza towers artstyle would be a 90s fast food kids menu
Back in the day when you could play as the noise.
okay grandpa, lets get you back to bed
Just wait a few months, he'll be playable again.
cool video! small correction, but S rank isnt the highest, nor is it gotten by doing everything, its a point target like the others, roughly double of A's required points. P rank is the actual highest, which requires doing everything _and_ keeping a single combo through the entire level
I wholeheartedly agree with everything said in this video, ten times over even. Let's make sure this game gets remembered around the time of awards season, it deserves that kind of recognition!
I would actually add a slight correction in regards to the style, it does seem like it mimics old games, specifically many edutainment games of old.
There's a lull Easter egg on me the end sequin on the end thing you can I know you can see pizzahead but you can also see fake Peppino just crawling on the wall
dont forget though its not fully completed too some playable characters arent finished yet
Damn, it's like a crazier version of dustforce
Been following this game since late 2018. Don't have a PC so I can't buy it but I'm so happy it's doing well I hope it will come to console one day. Maybe with the announcement of a sequel...
The song in the tutorial is actually a reference to famous Italian song "Funiculì Funiculà".
"if you hurt peppino too much times you can go to hell" - Talking Pizza
So far? Absolutely. Would wait for Silksong tho to make any assumptions
I really hope this game comes to Switch. Being so inspired by Wario Land, it just feels right.
Yes
You might wanna check anton blast
Steam Deck: 🗿
8:30 pointing out that the reason why that TV is there is because the main antagonist is there to laught and mock at your suffering, the hovering TV is there to laught at pepino's reactions
My only negative thing about this game that comes to mind is that the Dash (or Sprint) button moves you in the direction you are facing. It's unecessary. I messed up so many times because of that. You should dash only when you press the Dash button AND a direction to sprint in that direction.
The insane manic energy of the art style reminds me of Ren and Stimpy before anything else!
If and when this game gets ports I plan to sink my teeth into this delicious deep dish, thanks for the review

MatPat is going crazy with the Lore of Pizza tower
This games gives the same vibes as another game made by Maddy, who made Celeste, called Runman.
9:30 thats an italian Song "funiculi funicula", spiderman used It and in glad cause it made It funnier
im so happy for pizza tower now that its out It’s getting what it deserves
It's 20$ unless your outside of the USA, as an Aussie, it's bout 30$, but the DEV's have stated they'll lower the price when they can
Eyyyy don't worry about it, I'll front you da cash. Just don't stiff me like that old bastard Pizza minds
i wonder if pizza tower was inspired in antonblast
Idk which one came first, because they both took months(maybe years idk) to develop, but at least Peppino is playable in Antonball
Since I saw the sonic fan brain image and we’re talking about indie games…
Can you try Spark The Electric Jester 3? I’ve been a Sonic fan my whole life and I think Spark trumps anything Sonic has ever released.
The characters and art style are reminiscent of 90s french comics.
