Abacus mental calculation has long been a major class in many Chinese kindergartens and it’s certainly very possible to see some genius kids like these.
My mum taught me how to do arithmetics including multiplication and division on a abacus when I was around 4. Later when I grew up I learnt that abacus could even do power calculations including root calculations. If one’s an abacus master, using modern calculators will not match with him in some basic arithmetics; it only takes seconds for one to do a 2-figure big-number multiplication on an abacus before anyone can even type down the numbers on their calculator. These kids have abacuses in their mind.

At some point after doing countless additions of numbers below 1000 you develop pattern which is kind of reflex allowing you to see the answer without really calculating it in your head. It's called pattern recognition. But the most brilliant part about this show is how fast the numbers are presented, you need a great ear to rightly hear the numbers and on top of that pay attention to your evergrowing number
Omg is this what non Chinese speakers hear XD I can sorta hear the numbers but I also have to read it on the screen at the same time. If I don’t I would have no idea lol
It might seem unbelievable but there is a way to do complex arithmetic with the abacus. Once you’ve done enough calculations on it, you can start to use it mentally. It’s what these kids use to do mental arithmetic extremely quickly and accurately.

I have learned all the levels of abacus and can tell they went through intensive training. In my personal opinion, anyone who still uses finger movements could get answer wrong, I keep my eyes open and focus on a spot and I am almost always right. Finger movements are muscle memory but it cannot move faster than your brain or imaginary beads. I see a biggggg abacus when I am calculating, but if I used my finger movements it would slow me down, again everybody is different. So I would show them my own demo and show videos like this. I have tried 4 digits 15 rows in my classroom, got correct answer but the speed was slow. Since I am older, I am not as good as I used to be but I can definitely learn. Amazing video.

That was insane! Kudos to all 4 students for even being able to attempt this, especially the 2 who got it right!
My gosh I would cry if I hear all that numbers. These kids are amazing.
I came here after counting bank notes challenge.
I didn't know it was money. Well..
I literally got the goosebumps. Man. They are so intelligent. All four of them. Like I'll lost it the second that person starts reading those numbers
While they were displaying the numbers from the answers, I was like "what was the right answer?" after seeing it just 3 seconds ago... I can't even imagine the cerebral processing these kids have. Impressive.
I can't read that fast lol
God damn impossible more like. Processing that much information that fast and getting an accurate computation is just plain too difficult and too improbable for me to believe. I personally refuse to believe this wasn’t staged.
@@aaronconner1440 they use an abacus. Its a bunch of rails with beads and they memorize the changes to the abacus in their mind not the numbers themselves. Its how calculations at this speed are possible
@@unityman3133 not to be rude but i seriously doubt anyone’d be able to remember all of the movements and do so fast enough. This whole thing still feels completely staged
@aaronconner1440 a sane individual
I too find this to be impossible
Even if they have photographic memory it's still beyond belief that they can do this addition so fast consistently for 100 times
Like i can barely keep up with the numbers they are saying
They have to do that and in the same time add
Sounds a bit too impossible for me
Some people downgrade this by saying this doesn't require talent
They need to be reincarnation of litterely Newton to have a shot at this level of processing speed
It's too unlikely
Notice how they praise the students who are perfect at math, and shame those who just slightly failed. Even game shows are representative of the nature of the Chinese government, neglect those who are imperfect, idolize those who are academically gifted
In the west, we get to fail upwards, provided we meet alternative criteria that's not based on merit.
Its not math, its claculating
They were all incredibly impressive, as they all memorised the numbers I could barely hear and successfully added them up
and here I am being like ”7+8=?” well 8+2=10 and 7 is 5 bigger than 2 so 15.
Same same
Yes, same. ;-;
I just remember 7+7=14 then + 1...works anyway
I did it mentally and got 13 👍
When I see "7+8" I just know the answer cuz I memorized it
Ahh they should have added some negative numbers, cause we all know that no one can remember what "-1+1" is without reaching for the calculator
1 and I did it in my head

Thanks 🙏
Yeah 2+2=22
V is the 22 letter of the alphabet
V=5 in Roman numerals
I can't believe they didnt cheer the first 2 kids even though they made mistakes... I won't add 5 3 digital numbers with that tempo 🙃
Asian mom: why are you crying? you got 100
kid: but I was not the first that handed in the paper.
THIS IS SO DAMN TRUE
At some point after doing countless additions of numbers below 1000 you develop pattern which is kind of reflex allowing you to see the answer without really calculating it in your head. It's called pattern recognition. But the most brilliant part about this show is how fast the numbers are presented, you need a great ear to rightly hear the numbers and on top of that pay attention to your evergrowing number
Having just the 3 last digits wrong is still incredibly impressive
No one:
Bot: PapaShio PAPPA paPashiO ...
Huh?
Lmao
jio jio jio the lucky number 999
Omg is this what non Chinese speakers hear XD I can sorta hear the numbers but I also have to read it on the screen at the same time. If I don’t I would have no idea lol
Such an ignorant comment
4:12 You should have appreciated the other 2 kids who gave wrong answers too before ending the video. They were almost close to the right answer
And this is why the entire world should still adopt the use of the abacus. Incredible.
It might seem unbelievable but there is a way to do complex arithmetic with the abacus. Once you’ve done enough calculations on it, you can start to use it mentally. It’s what these kids use to do mental arithmetic extremely quickly and accurately.
Yes...documentary I heard on the radio had examples of children as young as 4 and 5 doing incredibly complex calculations with an abacus.
The smart kid during the test when he forgot to bring his calculator:
Being a human calculator used to be *a solid job 200 years ago :-)*
Good to see that China is focusing on solid math skills that will help kids to deal with numbers later in life.
Still better than learning to photograph Starbuck cups
But it ain't that useful wtf we have calculators

@Nij Jin well said !
I suspect there are other people that you shouldn't underestimate, too.
@Nij Jin straight fact 👏

Everyone: who came here after “Japanese taking their calculator’s very serious’?
Me, who hasn’t seen the video at all: ooh me special lol
Yeah I m going to check out this shit coz everybody commenting this only ...no 1 question how the fuck did they calculated man amazing...I mean 2 person got their answer right
lol same it was in my recommended
Watching this in a winter night makes it more scarier
I hope CGTN sees how popular this video has become and how incredible the comments are from around the world. THIS is what we should be showcasing. God bless China!
They are doing two things I never managed to learn, mandarin and mathematics
Parent - “ Just 100?? I used to do 1000 per second for my exams “
yeah everyone come here from japanese take their calculators very seriously :Dd
no i came from someone who memorized 1,100 numbers in 30 minutes...
I didnt
I am late to this video, but the fact that only two of the students got the answer correct shows how difficult this challenge was.
When your mum watches this video then gives you a whole lecture of "How they are so smart and they work hard," and your just sitting there, having your self-esteem die.
I was close to a mental breakdown one minute into the video, I couldn't breath well and the world started to spin. It seems my aversion to math hasn't gotten any better over the years.
Well, i couldn't breath too, i need to pause this video many times tho 😂
I skipped the calculation part, 😅 my self-esteem thinks tends to believe I'm smarter than average and cannot handle this
Have you tried non-binary?
The reason it a bot saying it cause human cant even speak that fast
Those 2 super girls didn’t need their hands to count but still gave out the right answer. Usually i see kids who count fast, they count with their hands like the first boy.
this is taking mental math to a whole new level
These kids need a childhood. It’s impressive and all but jeez go out and play or something.
Yeah Exercise is great but believe me there are people out there who enjoys math, science and programming like it's a videogame or a food.

Them: "Japanese take their calculators very seriously" brought me here.
Me: Sees "Impossible challenge: students mentally calculate 100 3-digits in seconds" on recommendation.
Also me: Interesting..
well, Chinese seem to have biological calculators instead of the devices
Plot twist: kid on left was so smart he invented an invisible calculator and that’s what he was doing with his fingers, and could have calculated the answer in his head but used the invisible calculator because he needed to properly test his product before releasing it to the world
No way they are actually solving this they will need perfect memory and perfect reaction spped and iq of at least 190 to solve this
It's just too good
@@No-xx8rj IQ has nothing to do with mental calculation. IQ assists with problem-solving and thinking of ideas. What they're doing is just putting their extreme speed-calculating practice to the test. This is actually not the most impressive if you look at what other challenges are presented on the show. This is 100% real
Imagine watching this show with the whole family and they start comparing you to them
"Whenever you think you are good at something just remember there will always be an Asian better at it than you."-Some UA-cam comment.
Lol right. Even though I'm an Asian, there will ALWAYS be someone better than me. Ugh. Sucks you know? Like if you get 98 or 99 in a hundred marks test, there will always be a kid with 99 or 100 marks in that test. And then you get scoldings at home lol.
It’s really made me feel chilly when I saw the child give out the correct answer

I play arcaea too!!! Never thought I would see an arcaea player here :0
@@tracklost2221 yeaaaaahh
I have learned all the levels of abacus and can tell they went through intensive training. In my personal opinion, anyone who still uses finger movements could get answer wrong, I keep my eyes open and focus on a spot and I am almost always right. Finger movements are muscle memory but it cannot move faster than your brain or imaginary beads. I see a biggggg abacus when I am calculating, but if I used my finger movements it would slow me down, again everybody is different.
I can do 3 digits 20 rows with the same speed but never went further. I would love to try this calculation maybe at slower speed. I was also a teacher in Canada and kids here would not believe me. So I would show them my own demo and show videos like this. I have tried 4 digits 15 rows in my classroom, got correct answer but the speed was slow. Since I am older, I am not as good as I used to be but I can definitely learn. Amazing video.
Amazing. I know there are math speed skills we can learn to do this kind of thing, but for all of them to be that close to the correct number is amazing. Even the 2 that got the number wrong were not that far off from the correct number.
Thanks for the video.
