That's a great observation! I think Arthur Benjamin takes more time saying the answer than he does solving the problem for a few reasons. First, he wants to make sure that he explains the answer clearly and concisely. He doesn't want to just give the answer and leave the audience confused. He wants to help them understand how he got to the answer and why the answer is correct. Second, Benjamin uses his time to entertain the audience. He is a skilled storyteller and communicator, and he enjoys telling stories and jokes to illustrate his points. He also likes to interact with the audience and ask them questions. Third, Benjamin takes his time to inspire the audience. He wants to show them that mathematics is a beautiful and powerful subject. He wants them to see that mathematics can be used to solve real-world problems and to make the world a better place. Overall, I think Arthur Benjamin takes more time saying the answer than he does solving the problem because he wants to explain the answer clearly, entertain the audience, and inspire them. He is a gifted teacher and communicator, and he uses his time to share his love of mathematics with the world. I find his approach to teaching mathematics very refreshing. @damn8633 Nah The impressive part isn't the calculation, honestly It's being able to accurately keep track of how many digits the solution has and properly saying the final answer... I was messing around with speed mental mathematic techniques and they pretty much all work the same way as regular multiplication on paper. As in, when you do the calculation in your head you won't arrive at: "three million two hundred twenty seven thousand six hundred and seventy three"... (3,227,673 for looks) You'd solve it and you'd get something like: "three, seven, six, seven, two, two, three" ...which doesn't matter for calculating, but being able to count all the digits, reverse the order, and then correctly label the number in real-time is pretty damn impressive, honestly. The actual mathematics you do in Calculus is really easy; you only ever really do algebra. The concept of calculus is interpreting what functions tell us and what we can solve with said function.
I first saw this guy on The Great Courses, he did a course on the mathematics of games and puzzles. The topics he covered was great. He introduced so many advanced math concepts, all while talking about poker, Rubik’s cubes, and chess. He’s great.
yeah he's more entertaining than teaching. What puzzles me is how he used words as part of his math... if I try associate numbers with words I just make even bigger mess ; it doesn't help me to remember more at all; just confuses me.
This isn't him flexing. When you were in school/college/university and they are going to teach a subject, I'm sure 90% of the time the very first thing they do or ask is "What is [this subject]?" Arthur did that when he introduced Mathemagics. He tells you what it is, then proceeds to show that it works and tries to give a glimpse into how it works in his head. If you want to learn how to do it, I'm sure it's another class or Ted talk you'll have to take.

For the numbers to words code the numbers 0-9 represents different sounds: 1 - t,d (imagine ones making a T) 2 - n (two downward lines) 3 - m (three downward lines) 4 - r (fouR) 5 - L (Roman numerals L is 50) 6 - sh, ch or j or soft g 7 - k or ck (imagine K as two 7's) 8 - f or v (imagine fancy f in 8) 9 - b or p (p 9 are similar) 0- z or s Vowels you can make up as you please to form the sounds into words. Bruh. Imagine having this dude as your dad and getting a math problem wrong when you are doing your homework.
Unfortunately/fortunately my father is like this, it’s nice because you can ask him a question and he’ll answer within seconds and sometimes show me how to do it myself in the future. But unfortunately because I have a slight memory problem my father made me memorise every timetable from 0.0x0.0 to 30.0x30.0 on the bright side I now know how to figure out weird maths problems on the not so good side I’ve forgotten most of it... if my father finds this comment he might call me to recite them all again, wish me luck.

The actual mathematics you do in Calculus is really easy; you only ever really do algebra. The concept of calculus is interpreting what functions tell us and what we can solve with said function.

cool guy, but just dissapointed that he didnt spend most of the video describing his method
yeah he's more entertaining than teaching. What puzzles me is how he used words as part of his math... if I try associate numbers with words I just make even bigger mess ; it doesn't help me to remember more at all; just confuses me.

What this poor man doesn't realise is that those nice rounds of applause are for him. Hats off!
This isn’t a TED talk, it’s just him flexing
Edit: damn guys it was a joke, y’all hurting my brain
Doey453 I’ll take it🤷🏾♂️
and more fun than most
A lot of Ted Talks are people flexing, but in a good way
This isn't him flexing.

It's good to be sceptical at times but I think it's totally possible to do with a lifetime of practice and interest in the subject.

For the numbers to words code the numbers 0-9 represents different sounds:
1 - t,d (imagine ones making a T)
2 - n (two downward lines)
3 - m (three downward lines)
4 - r (fouR)
5 - L (Roman numerals L is 50)
6 - sh, ch or j or soft g
7 - k or ck (imagine K as two 7's)
8 - f or v (imagine fancy f in 8)
9 - b or p (p 9 are similar)
0- z or s
Vowels you can make up as you please to form the sounds into words.
Light tomorrow = 51 134
We can ignore silent letters it's all about sounds. This method helps you convert numbers into letters and allow you to memorize them
