These kids have mastered the use of the abacus. Some kids could be seen moving their hands as if there was an abacus in front of them. The abacus is still being taught in China and Japan. It is a shame that American clerks do not know to count change back to a customer. Instead they rely on the cash register to tell them how much change to give back to the customer. When I was a child, I worked at my parents' grocery store and always counted change back to the customer, and those were the days before computers changed everything. American kids are not inherently poor in math. Introduce them to the abacus and they will see how easy it is to add and subtract numbers. Additionally, the abacus can be used for multiplication and division.
It's great to see these shows with English subtitles - thank you. The Chinese do these programs better than anyone else - they are well produced and well conceived.
