    It’s pure math. X+ 2X + 3x + 5x+ 8x + 13x + 21x + 34x+ 55x + 89x = 231x, which is 11 times 21x

      x + y + (x+y) + (x+2y) + (2x+3y) + (3x+5y) + (5x+8y) + (8x+13y) + (13x+21y) + (21x+34y) = 11(5x+8y)

Good info - thanks much - And, What possibly could make one think that ceaseless distracting repetitive background music while teaching mental math would be a good idea ?!? Why why why do people think there must be some kind of law that demands every video… documentary, tutorials, interviews, lectures, even the most serious intellectual presentation… must must must have backgrounds noise playing while the person is speaking ?

it has me beat too. I turn it off. I can watch an hour long video of a Brit handy man renovating his house. No talking, no noise, just the sound of the work. Very relaxing and he is a a genius to boot! This Yank just likes to flap his lips…Also the wavy hands!! But he is very young.
However, I have tried that easy multiply by 11 method he mentions with another 3 digit number and it doesn’t work. I did it my way and also with a calculator to check the correct number. But the number I get doing it his way is way off.

      (5x + 8y, with y = 2x, is 5x + 16x = 21x.)

It wouldn't work to multiply the 1st number by 21 as mentioned above if y != 2x, but he never explicitly mentioned the 21 multiplier, or if I missed it that doesn't mean the 11 multiple doesn't work? If you pick 1 and 3 you get 29*11 = 319 which is correct, even though 1*21*11 is not correct.
