- If you have ever wondered about the proper technique for the left hand on the mandolin, wonder no more! In this video, Emma breaks down step by step how to hold the left hand and how the fingers are supposed to be placed on the fretboard. She also includes what frets each finger covers and gives multiple tips about how to maintain a good position while playing. This video is very informative, but if you have any more questions, feel free to ask them down in the comment section!

Thank you. This review of technique has been helpful.
Great lesson Emma. As a guitar player it is quite the adjustment to keep the left hand set at the nut & not squeezed but gapped with air in the crotch part of the hand. Right technique is everything.
Blessings,
Ken
Thank you so much! Exactly right!
Thank you, Emma!!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks Emma, very beautifully explained.I have subscribed and will be following your continuing videos. you x
Thanks so much!
I've been playing (poorly) for almost fifty years and didn't think I could learn anything from a teenage girl. How wrong I was. Your playing is a delight and you know how to teach. Two different skills.
Thank you so much! Thank you for watching.
Nie video-- I have been playing for years but i'm not nearly as relaxed as you are !! :) How do you press down without squeezing? Are you pulling the mando towards you ? and if so are you holding the body still with you right arm?
Thanks for the video!
Thanks! I try not to pull the mandolin towards me…I keep it mostly level! There will be a little bit of squeezing to fully press the strings down, that is unavoidable. However, I try not to have any any tension in my left hand and especially not in my left arm. I do press my thumb against the neck of the mandolin as I am pressing down the fingers to keep everything stable. Hopefully that makes sense!
Thank you for good video! Is it possible to have a video of how to finger chromatic scales? Or can you recommend any video on UA-cam that deals with this issue?
Thank you! That’s a great question! I might could make a video about fingering chromatic scales. I normally do 0 1 2, 1 2 3 4!
Oh! I’ve been doing this wrong.
