Hi Tori. You thoroughly deserve all the praise that's coming your way. One thing I meant to say in the video and should have, was that I know you don't claim to sound like Karen. I thought afterwards that I was being unfair giving you 9.5 out of 10 for something you weren't even attempting. You have your own voice and it's a clear 12 out of 10. I absolutely look forward to hearing whatever you have to put out and seeing where this thing leads you. And of course, as I did mention If you are looking for new material for future singles or album I'd be more than happy to let you hear what I have. All the best. One of your many #1 fans. 😊
Hey Tori. You are amazing and a breath of fresh air to the music industry. Being a music educator of 40 years, it's refreshing to hear a young musician reviving classic tunes and I really look forward to hearing more of your original songs. I believe you have an amazing future in an industry which demands excellence which you clearly strive towards in all you present. The other thing is, you look so happy when delivering your reels and UA-cam videos. No ego or pretenses which is so rare. Keep sharing your amazing abilities and please know, you are loved by so many, even down under here in Newcastle, Australia.
What Dan said. Your voice and what you are doing is beautiful both with and without any comparison to Karen. People that truly appreciate Karen are seeing similar things in the unique voice that is Tori. I think it's wonderful and heartwarming that you can do "Karen" as she is so universally loved and revered. But wow, what will Tori be? Also some of the people you have already connected with actually are the best you could have found to mentor you and collaborate with so your instincts are spot on too.
Of course, no one is an exact copy of the original. The only other one I've heard that is close to an original is Marc Martel as Freddie Mercury. But, that having been said, artists grow and develop as they mature. Tom Jones, Frankie Valli, Paul Anka, and Anne Wilson all sound different and in most cases better than their youthful versions. I firmly believe that the same would have happened to Karen, and that you are picking up where she left off...
Thanks Dan for a good video. Yes, the comparison is what initially took my interest, but I think she is the real deal. And look forward to seeing and hearing more from her velvety smooth voice. So Good.
Honestly, I could easily do a video on my thoughts on Tori's vocal on Merry Christmas Darling. I think it is my favourite vocal recording that I have heard in many years.
I have listened to Tori on a weekly basis since finding her on youtube (yes youtube delivers an absolute diamond of a suggestion sometimes!). I would say, very much in laymans terms, 'her voice truly delivers a smile on the greyest of grey days'. This young lady deserves all the plaudits she gets, along with many years of huge success. She is a pure joy to listen to.
The first time i heard Tori Holub sing, i was instantly transported back in time. Her voice was guiding my memories. When i opened my eyes i had to replay it and watch it again and again. She is just fantastic! Thank you for this extensive analysis.
@@Wurlyscope as I mentioned in the video I never intended on ever doing an reaction video, but hearing a voice like Tori changed all that. She's very special.
Well, she just did her first live in Minnesota (home and it’s on her channel) and now she’s off to Hollywood!! Well, Downey but hey. She’s performing at the Carpenters 55th Anniversary Acoustic Night. What’s next?
This absolutely gives me such goosebumps...i loved The Carpenters..got to see them live at a Church Dance when they first started out...Tori...you are amazing...thank you for bringing Karen back...but besides this...your voicevis just beautiful...❤❤❤..God Bless your career...🎉🎉🎉
Whether 95% or 99%, I dunno. But when I first heard her I thought she was cheating and using Karen's voice. Yes, there are some subtle differences, but very close.
I think I read somewhere that she was most interested in Sound Engineering. I thought originally the Close to You video was put together to show you how the Carpenters constructed and produced a song, by showing all the parts that go into the production of a song. As far as her singing goes, yes no one will replace Karen Carpenter - Ever! That being said Tori has a very nice voice and she can sing.
Tori Holub has gotten the closest to Karen Carpenter than anyone else I have heard. I agree with your 95% assessment. I think it's the resonance that Karen had that no on can quite replicate. Tori Holub is indeed incredible!
She has a nice voice, but there is a typo in your assessment. for '95%' substitute '59%' and you might be somewhere near. Of course 59% as good as Karen is at least 150% as good as anyone else.
Amazing how close her voice is to Karen’s (one of the most clear and relaxed sounding voices ever). Congrats, Tori, you are now discovered…make the most of it…Karen had a LOT of fans!
Tori did EVERYTHING except the music backing track. Apparently that was an RC created Karaoke track for the Japanese market. The new version with Jim Wilkas adding “more Richard” is awesome too. It’s next to We’ve Only on his channel.
Thank you for your reviews on Tori Holub's covers. ❤ So glad you also shared your thoughts on "Something to Believe In" and in the full version. I only get to watch the promotional version/excerpt on Tori's platforms. But after listening to the full version here, I give it a double thumbs up! 👍👍
Yes indeed. As a songwriter who writes songs in what you could definitely call retro styles, I really appreciated the effort these guys made with this song.
Tori is an amazing singer. She can closely resemble Karen Carpenters tone. As you have shown, she can also do a good job covering Olivia Newton John. On one of Linda Ronstadt's song, she hits a couple notes that remind me of Linda.
When I find the comforting smooth contralto of Karen Carpenter and then the nuances of the girl next door of Olivia Newton John in a singer like Tori I rediscover the innocences of my youth. I first discovered Tori while in a hospitsl recovrring from a heart attack and a PDK event. She thus became part of my healimg process just listening to her voice. I guess there is not much else to say but a profoumd thanks.
@@danwesley7990life goes on either way. Tori becomes one of those joys along the way along with your very purposeful contributions. What is nice is that both are stripped of all theatrics or pretense - simply just beautifully and purely performed. When the music itself is all that matters. What is most astounding is that most consider Richard and Karen as pop stars. This is misleading. With all that is going on in their music they are really progressive art musicians mixing styles employing even some sense of vocal counterpoint and imitative madrigals in what they emulate in their expression. That alone puts Tori in the same category. This is the real thing and I am grateful to be here at the beginning of what should be an incredible career.
@@frankgarnevicus1187 let's all hope there is a great ride for us to all enjoy. I know we all look forward to hearing what she has next. I know I do, whether I'm involved or not.

Thanks for bringing more attention to Tori Holub. She has such a beautiful voice and even though I only found her on UA-cam less than a month ago, I'm really impressed. My favorite cover from her is Magic by Olivia Newton John. Next is We've Only Just Begun full video with Jim on background vocals and other instruments. I also really liked Crazy on You by Heart and her playing guitar. I would lover to hear her do more songs by Heart and some from Pat Benatar.
Love this. Thanks Dan. I've been listening to Tori for a while now and yes, she is amazingly gifted with a voice so rich and similar to Karen Carpenter's voice. It wasn't just her voice with the Carpenters, it was also the orchestration and vocal harmonies which supported her amazing gift. Brilliant!
Yep, they were the full package. Usually the bands I admire are the ones with more than one quality singer, but it didn't matter that Richard didn't have a great voice. He more than made up for that with his musical and arranging chops.
I stumbled upon your great video Dan. Like you I was an early Carpenter's fan growing up in the 60's and 70's I experienced Karen's greatness from the beginning of her career and the Carpenters remain my favorites. As you say, Tori is a real talent and I hope she has great success. We need more music like this.
Ha, the Tori effect strikes again! Hearing Tori sing (and seeing her) seems to have a profound effect on people, and I think your reaction video says a lot about what I mean. So many people who would never normally post comments, or indeed make reaction videos on You Tube, have been moved into speaking out for the first time. That's kind of amazing, and a bit unprecedented I think - there has to be a reason. Maybe it's just Carpenters fans that feel this way, but in any case, Tori has the most gorgeous voice that should be heard by everyone out there.. lets spread the word. I for one could listen to her sing all day long.
You are so right. I'm not for for suddenly professing my admiration online like this. It had to be something really special, and that's what we have here. Yes, the Tori effect. Maybe that will become a common phrase like Murphy's Law. 😊
So happy UA-cam introduced me to Tori and also this video. Absolutely amazing voice and performances. Very much looking forward to hear more, complete songs of her. Edit: agree about Karen's brilliant low register opening vocal in "Only Yesterday". Also worth mentioning, Joe Osborne's bass contributing to this terrific song.
I have just spent the evening discovering Tori, what an absolutely beautiful voice. I have been teleported back 45 years without a dry eye. I discovered you as well Dan, love your ear for detail and expertise, please both of you keep up the good work
Howdy David. I think Tori is having this effect on many people. And thanks for your kind words. I've been itching to do another analysis video, but have been so busy with studio work I've not had chance. But finally I can breathe and shall be recording one tomorrow. Thanks for your support.
My dear friends Tori is Karen,Olivia and the rest how great she really IS…everything in a single person…well I’m 77 I was all , my life profissional pianist ..and my friends…this is simply SOMETHING…and we don’t now yet the limits of this Wonderful Talent…
Absolutely astounding video reaction! It's really hard to add much to what you said because it was well thought out and correct. I have to say there is something about Tori that you dealt with a bit, while other reactors just skipped it... She's very adept with the equipment and the theory, as she's taken apart the harmonies in the Carpenters' songs and reproduced them, not only in her TASCAM multitrack, but in her PC with her Pro Tools sequencer. So she not only sings subliimely, but is a competent engineer; I'd love to see her setup, but she's dead serious. Noticed the anechoic foam panels lining her room? :) I have to comment on her sound. Did you notice how she brightened her tone a bit when doing Olivia's cover? A little breathier. You were also correct on how Karen's gold was deep. You mentioned you were looking for the right word to describe the difference. You said more chocolatier for Tori, which I've told other reactors, but with the descriptor "rounder." I find Karen's voice, which you said was sharper, I described as having more overtones. Subtle but it's there. Semantics, but I'm in agreement with you there too. One last thing, though it might be obvious to some, is Tori's amazing UNFORCED AND SUSTAINED vibrato. I can't tell you how many singers I've heard DON'T have that quality to their vibrato, and it's another thing that Karen had. Again, absolutely fantastic reaction.
Howdy Chris, great comments. I love hearing from others who hear all the details. You're absolutely right about the vibrato. I meant to talk about that, but forgot. As a singer myself, I wish I had a quarter of her vibrato. Very jealous. And yes, she adapted her sound for the ONJ song and totally knocked that one out of the park. She shows versatility. I feel I probably used the word 'perfection' too much. But to be honest, I've not heard anyone doing this stuff who deserves it like Tori.
Just discovered your channel Dan - loving it as a gent of a similar age and musical tastes. Funnily enough I’ve just discovered Tori too, so serendipity x 2. As one struggling content creator to another (more successful and rightfully so) - tip of the hat sir 😊
Not just a reaction Dan; that was an education! Now here's something arse-about... hearing Tori popping up in my UA-cam suggestions caused me to buy a Carpenters CD! It's like a virtuous circle going on here... this girl is making Carpenters fans very happy, and she's also making new Carpenters fans:)
There are 3 female singers of modern contemporary music that have set the bar so incredibly high due to their purity and tone which Jake them nearly impossible to replicate. Anne Wilson, Barbara Streisand and Karen Carpenter, and Tori has nailed it with KC. I just discovered her a few days ago and have watched every video she has done and I have to admit, I sat fixated on her voice with tears rolling down my face. Karen's voice control evokes emotions through her tone and nuances. Tori perfectly replicates these qualities effortlessly. Every other singer pales by comparison.
@@DerekDominoes she insinuated it in a interview and I was in Downey on Saturday and she met him. I wish I could post a pic but we can't do that on here.
Really good call on that last one! "Believe in" would have been a better choice for the background vocals. Anyway, as a fellow lover of The Carpenters, I'm so glad to have found Tori - she's amazing!❤
I chose Carpenters for my first college concert; I went alone, since they were not considered "cool". Yes, Karen played drums for part of the set. I can certainly tell the difference, but Tori Holub is superb in her own right. Modern music is an industrial/electronic phenomenon, but I hope she will strive to limit electronic correction. Even people like Lucy Thomas are being persuaded by the industry to correct what needs no correction: the naturally changing nuances in a live human voice.
I'm pretty sure the vast majority of my favourite music isn't "cool". Couldn't be a less relevant concept for me when liking music. We'll just have to see where this thing leads Tori. I hope she never feels pressured into doing things she doesn't want.
In case you haven’t seen it. The Wings of Pegasus channel, Fil, has analyzed this song and Tori. I haven’t seen Fil smile this wide in a verily long time. Because of a misunderstanding of whether Fil said, I referred him to this song. The rest is history.
@@dugroz thankyou for that. Yes I plan to make more videos of this nature. I did one on Harriet's version of Trying To Get The Feeling Again. Don't know if you saw that.
I cant tell their voices apart, because , like you, I also was/am obsessed with Carps and grew up with them. I never thought there would ever be anyone come along like such a unique and distinct voice like Karens. Even those who have big tribute shows in Vegas and other places, they dont sound like this girl. I am happy for those tribute shows because they celebrate that legacy. They dedicate their well-being on such. However, its always a happy time for me to come across others who have long loved Karen as well as those first time discoverers. As you say, such an angelic yet versatile voice is so recognizable, you instantly can hear her in a crowded place among many over the radio. Your review is lovely!
I'm like you. When I first heard her, I thought she was lip syncing the songs until I heard all of her. I've periodically throughout the years hoping for this to come along because this style of singing is so pleasing to the senses. I've heard the English woman, a few Asian women, and that was really just about it. I can't begin to explain how delighted I was. I really hope she continues. I'm absolutely gobsmacked smitten. Thank you for the review mate.
❤❤She may be quite similar but I think Karen would have a deeper or more mature voice... it is an incredible quirk of Karen, but this girl does Karen an honor and is very comfortable
@@danwesley7990 I was more crude! The first time from the algorithm link was OMFGWTHIT. When I picked myself up off the floor. I checked out her channel.
Tori is amazing for sure. Jim (MIDI Doctor) Wilkas did a masterful job with everything. Imagine how she would sound singing into a $3K Neumann microphone with a real plate reverb.
Hell yes! Karen was amazing. Tori.., Tori brought tears to my eyes. And you, you are not an old guy you old fart you. That a 19-20 year old sings Carpenters songs, stuns me. I'm so grateful though. She has a Carpenters poster behind her on the wall! Of course she likes what she's singing. Karen is a register lower? I'm not a pro as you are, I am one that feels Karen should not have died of anorexia at 32 years of age. I was living in San Diego when she passed. I was devastated. And I still am. OK, this is NOT a reaction video, its an analysis video. More details and actual knowledge about what you're talking about. I've watched so many Unchained Melody by the Righteous Brothers and so many of those were people oohing and aweing without any..., true feeling. Good analysis video mate. I'm a fan.
Dan she is just amazing and I agree with your observations of TORI. What more can I say, watch this girl now and in the future. She is absolutely magnificent and a amazing 🙂
I saw you trigger on Tori's Carpenter vocals. Welcome to the club of Karen fans that only hope Tori's given a writer/producer to make her "old sound" new again. We need her pure and clean vocals.
Great review. I ran across a song and thought that's Karen Carpenter, then I had to pause for a second and thought that's not Karen Carpenter, but it sounds damn close. Thanks for putting this review out there
Je suis sous le charme de cette merveille de voix !!! Magnifique dommage qu’il n’y a pas de traduction en Français … une voix d’ange pour remplacer un ange karen
What a beautiful ,classic analysis !! Just loved all your musical experience & appreciation of some of the best music ever performed ! One big difference I found with comparing Karen & Tori was, that Karen mostly sings with quite an obvious accent, whereas Tori sings with absolutely no accent at all !! Just my opinion..

Thanks for the interesting video, Dan. For the convenience of those who are wondering about where the Carpenters grew up, they were born in New Haven, Connecticut and moved to Downey, California in 1963. For anyone who's interested, there's a terrific 2021 book "Carpenters: The Musical Legacy" written with Richard's close collaboration that tells a lot of their story in unprecedented detail.

All my life I was hoping Richard Carpenter could search the world for another Karen. You have found her. You need to get in touch with Richard Carpenter and have him sit with you in an interview and hear his comments as Tori Holub sings Karen’s songs. Now this would be a UA-cam video that would go off the charts. Can you imagine Richard Carpenter and Tori Holub getting together and touring America as perhaps The Carpenters Revisited!!! His musical genius and Tori Holub’s magical voice?! Wow! I’d go again to one of his concerts for sure. I loved the Carpenters.
I found myself mirroring your opinion and thoughts. Myself, having a small talent, and lived through the times of the Carpenters, I agree absolutely. I would ascribe the minuscule difference in the renditions, as a confidence issue, an internal uncertainty. that will disperses like smoke with age. Excellent review, Sir....Cheers

As a 72 year old and an avid music lover, there were and are many good singers but the purest softest smoothest voice I’ve ever heard was Karen Carpenter. That being said, Tori is certainly the closest thing to Karen’s perfection. We can compare Tori to Karen but let’s not forget, Tori IS spectacular in her own right. Good luck Tori, in everything that you do.
It’s definitely exciting to hear Tori for the first time. Karen fans crying all over YT including me. I 100 % agree with your gold standard. That opening with the chill producing low note is untouchable. My other gold standard is For All We Know. I am waiting for Tori to share it on her channel. She nailed another super hard Karen song to sing I Need to Be in Love. She’s unbelievably talented.
Go watch the whole 3 minute video, it’s on her channel here. When she’s laying down the notes. OMG they are damn near perfect. But as Fil would say just a touch flat of the line or sharp of the line and BANG on the line. A natural voice!
It is interesting to me that so much of what used to be taught, evaluated and corrected through private music lessons and college-level programs can now be done online by average people who happen to be astute observers of what makes certain music stand out from the rest. My hope is that people who take the risk of posting their music can withstand the microscopic analysis without feeling like they've missed the mark or totally failed. (I'm not really intending this specifically toward Tori, BTW.) Even if the goal is not to sound like a perfect reproduction of someone else's music, it's still worthwhile attending to understanding why certain music and artists impact us more than other. Fun! P.S. Tori hails from Minnesota. She does remarkably well avoiding the typical Scandinavian overly-rounded "oh" vowel sound most of us in the mid-north U.S. tend to have!
yes, it's the finer details and nuances that you notice that make certain singers stand out to you. I could honestly have done a whole video on what her vocal on Merry Christmas Darling does to me but the video was already long enough and I might have gone too microscopic in describing the little things that make that so special to my ears. As a Brit, I'm not familiar with the various accents around the US, but what I will say is to me I even love hearing her talk. Her speaking voice is golden to me too.
@@danwesley7990I found that early because my first reactor didn’t want to do The Medley “because it doesn’t suit Karen’s voice” but … that’s Tori? She found Superstar in Lauren’s Topic. I saw the three songs there and I had 4 songs to request and Christmas season was fast approaching. I concentrated on The Medley because it was amazing and you could see this beautiful singer with tons of personality in action. Then my round 2-4 were the Ohio Songs. 🎄 Then “Georgia” came out, Tori said something and I knew who has seen her, that was December. Now it’s public knowledge. Oh and Dan, I told you this was going to be your #1 video in fairly short order. I stand by that! ❤ You made what people finding her are looking for. Joe
Hi Dan! Wow, what a video, I see Tori found you right away! UA-cam did the same for me last October. I’ve been on a journey since. I’m an OG Carpenters fan, 14 in 1970 bought Close To You off the #2 position on the Top 10 Album Rack. Never thought I’d ever hear those tones again and last October I learned to say never say never. I noticed, since I had become a fan of reactions, there were none for Tori. So I started. Until a few weeks ago it was just me, my new friend Ron is on the track with me now. So if you search her name and reaction you will see a lot of people doing just that. I learned if I see gray hair and a Carpenters history, get a doctor’s note first. I’ve almost given some folks a stroke. Today is an interesting day as an interview with a Tori just dropped before I saw you. It’s on Lee Richey’s channel. Very informative and THE big secret is out as you will see. A couple of videos of note that you missed, that drive me crazy. You chose the older version of a Goodbye To Love. In January she took another stab at it, as you can see in this one, she breathed. How dare she! 26 syllables on one breath with dynamics is the Kacie standard. Look for version 2. She nailed it! I saw you had Now & Then in the queue, great Beatles choice. For ON-J Never Been Mellow, how high did she go!? And my personal favorite Crazy On You (Instagram version, it’s longer) where she’s 4 members of ❤. Often the short on Instagram is longer than then the UA-cam version. a gem on Instagram in her Reels near the bottom. There’s a video of her (19) in the booth laying down Merry Christmas, Darling! OMG I’m not on Tik Tok either, I suspect it’s all there except. Only UA-cam has the full length songs. Jim Wilkas’ channel will host his productions with Tori. There’s another topic channel where you can find the three songs that are from 2022, Lauren Ravas Topic. Or just search Tori Holub Superstar and it’s the slide thumbnail version, all 3 will be there. Yes, Christmas Again is original and was given to her by the writers. Steve Eaton and Donnie Demers. Steve wrote All You Get From Love Is A Love Song; for Carpenters! They heard a Tori short and knew they had the voice! Check out Georgia On My Mind, a vibrato masterpiece. Produced by Chris May who wrote a certain book and has a UA-cam channel about stuff. 😉 Last thing and one I’m most proud of. I suggested and Fil of Wings of Pegasus did a full analysis of Tori and We’ve Only Just Begun. Actually he did a follow up also. That has driven a lot of folks to her. Welcome to the unofficial fan club! Tori has a Reactions playlist on her channel, I’m guessing this will be there shortly. Be well and great great job! Joe

If she doesn’t sound exactly like Karen, so what? It’s wonderful she has an uncanny similarity to one of the greatest voices ever heard. We can enjoy Tori in her own rite, singing either cover songs, or possibly some new material. I think her future is bright, and she will delight her audiences by singing many of the songs we haven’t heard much in decades, in the style of this most beloved artist of song.
The speech pattern you didn't quite get, I suspect, is a Minnesota Short consonant , Almost a contraction of the Midwestern Flat Tone in words like plan and plane sound with a stretched vowel. more Northern than Southern. Like Sommin' and Somethinc In The Different regions of the U.K. (Nothing personal , to a north-easterner...LOL) Cheers!
@@MrGaryRoberton 😃 I know what you're saying. You know what though, I even love hearing her speak in interviews. Is it because I'm a Brit that I think even her speaking voice sounds classy?
You sound almost exactly like me.... football, chess, music.. Karen Carpenter, and now... TORI! she's great, and I am with you, I hope she really goes places.
@@danwesley7990 Soccer, Manchester United, American Football the Minnesota Vikings! lol. Chess, Hikaru Nakamura and Fabiano Caruana (are you watching the candidates?). You?
This young ladies tribute to Karen Carpenter is wonderful she has a very similar voice type. I would like to recommend another amazing singer from the UK, 20 year old Lucy Thomas. She's just released her 5th studio album, and has just performed her first major solo concert in Manchester. Her next concert is in Tokyo Japan. At the end of the year she is to star on the West End stage in a brand new musical especially written for her called "Rosie." Many reactors say she has one of the most beautiful voices in the world, I'd like to know what you think?
Tori is a wonderful singer and she sings amazingly, but like Karen Carpenter. That is the only thing that is impossible. Imitation is the highest form of flattery. Karen had so many layers to her voice. And this is the difference. I am 62 and a huge music lover, and in my lifetime I have heard and listened too thousands of singers and I Love hundreds of them, but No one else could have a voice of perfection like Karen Carpenter. Singers like her come along ONCE nad only ONCE. The only singer who sends chills down my Spine and makes me feel 20 emotions in one song. Now, tell me someone else who can do that? That is right. NO ONE ELSE!! I wish Tori all the best. Karen, was a "Genius" and she could have sung the Dairy Queen Menu and it would have sounded glorious. So, lets be real. There will only be one person with the Voice of Karen Anne Carpenter and that will always be Karen.
There will always be only one one and KC is and will always for me be the only ONE!! Tori will have a great future with her original songs to come, I’ll definitely be watching out for her…
I'll be seeing her this week at the Carpenters 55th anniversary celebration of signing with A and M (which is today). In Downey California on Wednesday at the church where Karens funeral was held. Can't wait. You guys should also check out Harriet. She's from the UK. I think she's closer to KC. Also, Richard will be doing some concerts in the UK later this year.
You're making me jealous. Would love to be there too. I hope she posts footage of her performance there. And yes, Harriet is on my list for future videos.
This, of course, comes down to range. Tori's range is not the same as Karen's. Karen's goes down lower. So when Tori sings a Carpenters cover, she's singing them in the same key as the original. And yes, some notes are below her confortable range. When she records her own stuff in future, she will choose the key that works for her. This is not a weakness of hers, it's just the way it is when any singer sings in a key below their ideal one.
@@danwesley7990 That makes total sense. Tori Holub has a superb voice and it would be great to hear her singing original compositions or covering a far wider variety of material. The sooner the better as "sound alikes" often get typecast. Mandy Barnett comes to mind...another fabulous vocalist who started her career doing the lead role in the stage production of "Always Patsy Cline". Although it got her initial notoriety, I can't help but feel that her own career was stiffled by the association.
@@danwesley7990 Me too...the focus on this thread is vocal likenesses rather than appearances but to me Mandy looks the spittin' image of a younger Catherine Zeta Jones...with wavy hair (before Mandy went with these recent rust-coloured streaks) 🙂
BTW, Macelito won the 2nd season of Filipinas Got Talent in 2011 and a few years later appeared on the 2nd season of AGT Champions 2020 where he sang an abbreviated version of "The Prayer" at his audition. So far in my 7+ decades of listening to music Tori comes as close as you can to Karen. The Carpenters are still one of my many favorite vocal bands of which there are many! I was fortunate to see them in concert several times and one was their 1st concert in the San Francisco Bay Area around 1970. Over the years there have been some who have come fairly close; Shane Ericks who has been referred to as the Philippines' Karen Carpenter. One of my favorite song and not hit is "YOU" - here's Shane singing "YOU": ua-cam.com/users/results?search_query=shane+ericks
I have heard several singers sing Superstar recently. I will mention at least two to check out. The first sings with a group called Leonid and friends and her name is Ksenia Buzina. She is from Russia. The second is Sara Loera, both on UA-cam. Here's a link with Ksenia and Karen singing together. ua-cam.com/video/bW9XpdN2PHY/v-deo.html
To my ears the differences between Tori and KC (other than timing and pitch) boils down to EQ settings, compressor settings and choice of microphones. The differences are very subtile.
You know what Steevee. I think Tori has one of those once in a generation voices. In fact I think we may have skipped a generation and not had a voice like this since Karen.
She did most of Karen Songs very well, sometimes you can not even tell the difference unless you listen closely. But "Rainy Days & Mondays" can only be sung by Karen, the difference on that one is huge! Nevertheless, she is really good!
She did a second take on Rainy with Jordan on piano. It’s on the gram so a link is dodgy. I think you;ll find that one more favorable. It’s a longer short cover. Read the comments. You will find one by @paulielama2. He’s had experience with some singers. He liked Tori, a lot!
I have listened to so many Carpenters songs, sung by Karen and by many other Trubute Artists. Some are very good, but don't quite catch Karen's pitch, tone, etc. as it is difficult to sound exactly like someone else. There are some very professional Tribute Shows being done where the Show is Great, The Costumes are Excellent, and you can compliment them all for doing a wonderful job. I could single out a few who sound close to Karen and look a lot like Karen, BUT I'm not going to mention everyone that is very good. I am simply going to say that TORI HOLUB absolutely nailed it! Nobody sounds as close to Karen Carpenter as Tori Holub, period. Again, my opinion. Prove me wrong. I don't think you can. When it comes to Impersonating Karen Carpenter, there are the others whom are very very good, and then there's TORI HOLUB with whom there is no comparison IMO.
I'm going to see Richard in concert in September. He's doing a little tour here in the UK. I haven't seen any mention as to whether there's a female singer joining him to sing the songs. How awesome would that be if he brought Tori.
Also check out Kesnia of Leonid and friends. A Russian group. Check out the one where she’s singing on one track and Karen on the other track. Almost exactly the same.
Wow, where to begin. Please don't diss Tori because she sounds like KC. 1) Karen is a product of her and our times. 2). Richard was a genius musician, arranger, writer, producer and talent scout. 3). The songs at that time were rich melodically(?) and harmonically(?). 4). The musicianship on display is off the charts. 5). The recording equipment was just good enough to record and add a little to the recorded source (not enough to distract performance - no auto tune, looping, beat detective, etc.) 6). The Carpenters were supported by a giant music industry that combined with TV networks to push this music forward. 7) The general listening audience had the patience to focus on all the musical elements. The reason I write this is because anyone who tells Tori to skip covers and start writing these types of songs is delusional about the monumental effort this would take. She would be better off searching for these types of songs that were less popular and adding her own (KC like ability). For example Scott Crimes - You are the voice CD (Richard Carpenter performed and produced). For those of us who love everything the Carpenters did!!!
Hey Anthony, love your comments. All your points were spot on. We live in different times. The mainstream music industry no longer values those elements that made the Carpenters so successful. But I do believe there are songwriters out there still writing beautiful songs. And Tori could be just the voice to get them heard. I find it difficult to think why anyone would 'diss' what she has produced so far. I absolutely love the girl and want to hear much more.
Normally whenever I hear a “sound-alike”, I tend to switch it off, because nothing, no one can beat the original, especially with Karen Carpenter, but this gal is a close second. Question is, is she singing naturally or is she imitating Karen?
I think if she was forcing something that wasn't natural to her we'd hear that. She has the gift and it is because she has grown up listening to the good stuff. That would be my guess.
You know what she hast to do Richard Carpenter should hook up with her and create a brand new music Karen Carpenter is my favorite singer ever she’s even better than Barbara Streisand and this girl. Tori is incredible. If I close my eyes, I can barely tell the difference.
Wow, what an amazing, in depth review!!!! Thank you for all the kind words- it means so much that people enjoy what I’m putting out there.
Great review 😘
So Good.
Velvety smooth indeed.

A beautiful review, Dan. Tori is amazing. I might say she's more like 98%. Love her voice.
Her secret is the holding of the notes when needed. Amazing voice. please notice the holding of the notes!
I think Tori's fanbase will grow and grow. She's definitely got it.
This is clearly the best review I have been able to discover of Tori's beautiful voice.

That B/D medley was INSANE! The degree of difficulty of the piece and the nonchalance in which the challenge was accepted- so impressive.
Yes indeed. Maybe her next challenge should be the complete Side 2 of Now & Then montage complete with the radio DJ bits. 😂

Dan, I'm sure you've seem Fil? Wing's of Pegasus is his UA-cam channel. He does an excellent analysis video of Karen Carpenter. Highly recommended.
Yep. Fil's stuff is great.
@@frankgarnevicus1187 yes indeed, Tori's voice has the power of healing. Hope you are well on the mend my friend.

Yes, her ONJ Magic is pure magic as I think I said in the video.
Love this.
Thanks for your review of Tori. She has a splendid voice.
We certainly do.

I have to comment on her sound.

@@rosskelly8268 yes, exactly. Classic music often gets a boost after appearing in a movie or commercial. Tori is proving to have that power too.

Thankyou Kathy. We've found a good one here.

OK, this is NOT a reaction video, its an analysis video. More details and actual knowledge about what you're talking about. I've watched so many Unchained Melody by the Righteous Brothers and so many of those were people oohing and aweing without any..., true feeling. Good analysis video mate. I'm a fan.
Have you seen Tori’s take on Unchained Melody and very recently Ebb Tide (a capella)? 🤯
Thanks for your kind words. I've not done one of these before but very much enjoyed sharing my thoughts on something that makes my ears so happy.

Totally agree. Magnificent, amazing, and definitely one to watch.

What a beautiful ,classic analysis !! Just loved all your musical experience & appreciation of some of the best music ever performed !
One big difference I found with comparing Karen & Tori was, that Karen mostly sings with quite an obvious accent, whereas Tori sings
with absolutely no accent at all !! Just my opinion..

Soooooo like Karen - the tone, the vibrato, the depth, the range - incredible and a real treat!
Yes, Tori's voice is an absolute treat, no question.
And the Tori connection. Chris May arranged and produced Tori’s cover of Georgia On My Mind. Oh pianist on it , too.
It's funny, I was going to ask for a book recommendation. I looked on Audible. I don't think that one is available there.

Can you imagine Richard Carpenter and Tori Holub getting together and touring America as perhaps
The Carpenters Revisited!!!
His musical genius and Tori Holub’s magical voice?!
Wow! I’d go again to one of his concerts for sure. I loved the Carpenters.
That would indeed be a match made in heaven.
Richard tried to replace Karen before and it went nowhere. There is, and never will be, another Karen Carpenter.
Hook this girl up with Richard Carpenter and let him write and arrange some new material for her in that Carpenter's style.

I’m not saying ignore Carpenters. Like IMHO you picked the wrong Goodbye To Love. The newer one labeled #2, she nails the 26 syllables with chromatics that she missed on the first one.

You're making me jealous. Would love to be there too. I hope she posts footage of her performance there. And yes, Harriet is on my list for future videos.
Wouldn't it be grand if Richard were to work with Tori to create new songs with a Carpenters sound and feel.
That would be many shades of awesome.
Such A wonderful review interesting!

If there is a weakness, it's in the "basement"..The higher and sustained middle tones are spot on.
Wow. Thanks for that tip. Shane Ericks sounds lovely, and I love how smiley she is. You can hear the smile in her vocal. Very nice.
I have heard several singers sing Superstar recently. I will mention at least two to check out. The first sings with a group called Leonid and friends and her name is Ksenia Buzina. She is from Russia. The second is Sara Loera, both on UA-cam.

Yes, Leonid and Co. are very talented. I've not heard of Sara yet, I shall have to check her out. Thanks for the suggestions.
I can’t help but well up when hearing Tori’s beautiful voice..she is so close to Karen’s voice it’s unreal..
Yep. Agree 100%

@@tonyhemingway7980yes, Shane sounds really lovely too. And I love the smile she always sings with.
Her voice is softer than Karen’s voice
@@kimberlynorton yes, that is the big difference.
@@danwesley7990perfect deduction. And she started with The Beatles. She discovered Carpenters “next decade.”
