Had same fault ( crankshaft end float) with low mileage 1.4 Mokka. Vauxhall dealership quoted £7,000 to replace engine after trying a set of shells. Low miles, full Vauxhall service history, customer had car just over a year : no warranty or contribution. I bought accident damaged Mokka from Copart & swapped engine, had customer back on road for under £3,000. Common fault on 1.4 Vauxhalls.

From what I have discovered on UA-cam is in fact the end float on the crankshaft when operating the clutch is in fact the thrust bearings need replacing. So now with all in situ, drop the sump and replace them. Years ago my big ends went, so drained the sump. Laid on my back under the car removed the sump, dropped the crank, and fitted oversized bearings. Put it all back together and drove it it for many miles. Hillman Minx 1968..

Crank walk is the thrust bearing failed. It's not a dead engine. It probably wasn't aligned properly OR it has been abused by the driver riding the clutch. The garage obviously changed the clutch and the problem was still there so they opened the sump and found the thrust bearing has failed. Crank thrust bearing wear is a known issue on those Rob. Have you guys checked the excess end float on the crank, and what's the rest of the engine condition like ? I wouldn't just assume some engine work has been done because of the new sealant. It may have been a quick check once the clutch wasn't found to be the cause, and they've replaced the friction plate as a matter of course. The owner may have decided they'd spent enough already, especially as most of the job would be a repeat of the parts stripdown already done, again. Depending on its potential resale value, and how much you're in to it already, you could just be looking at a new oversized main bearing set to fix it, possibly a crank dress / grind and big ends too. If it's a genuine mileage car, then it should be worth spending a bit, but maybe not to the extent of an engine swap.
@@garyevans9509 Depending on the design, many engines have just a centre main bearing with shoulders, that are the thrust bearing face. They have different thickness of white metal coating. I knew a guy years ago had a 1.2SRi 53 plate, pedal into the carpet from cold every day, 70mph over speed bumps and it took it like a champ, looks like they don't make them like that any more!
When it was running it sounded like the tappets were really worn. My guess is it's been run low on oil at some point. Those engines are known for burning oil which is probably why they are so expensive used.
Triumph sixes were notorious for crank end float. There was a C shaped thrust washer that often fell into the sump. once this happened if you operated the clutch the crank would move 1/8" forward or even 1/4". This forced the pistons into the sides of the bores and ovality was the side effect ........ a rebore and new pistons the cure. Sometimes the crank land was so worn the crank was scrap as well. I've not known the problem with any other unit.
Cars of gone full cycle. 70s 80s they only had 80 - 100k in them before they were worn out. 90s early 2000s well built and you were generally getting what you paid for. Since then manufacturers havd cost engineered cars into very expensive hunks of junk.
those small turbos get real hot, termostat 105 celsius and all the cooling issius, but the block and the crankshaft and rods is very good for that heat.
BMW swapped from 2 main thrust bearings to 1 in the later B petrol engines, these wore out too quickly, caused end float and started breaking the inductive pickup for the crank sensor. The solution was to revert to 2 thrust bearings.... I wonder how much that recall cost compared to doing it right the first time. Same with the F generation steering rack debacle.
This one is tricky to diagnose. First thing that jumps to Mind is faulty thrust bearing. Don't beat yourself too much Rob. There is no way in hell the owner wasn't aware. But you guys are in the business of taking risks. You win some you loose some. You guys win ratio is incredibly good.

I had a Cavalier with one of those old style clutches that you could pull the shaft back and the whole thing dropped out! Changed the clutch on the Cav on my drive and couldn't believe how easy it was - those were the days! wouldn't attempt to change a clutch on a modern car. Sadly Corsa engines seem to be full of problems although not heard of this one before. Hope something turns up but admire your philosophical attitude to it all👍
I'd pop an automatic trans in it, the torque converter will hold the crank in exactly the right axial position. Unfortunately you'd need a donor car for the pedal box, quadrant and trans, but it may be easier to find as a wreck.
It's a second hand car everyone I have bought weather from a dealer or private needed more money spent on it after a few weeks ,the best value one was from a scrap yard £20 and a year of trouble free motoring .

New subscriber just for your guys positivity not to mention your knowledge, I’d be livid tbh at the realisation that is not gearbox issues but a new engine especially if previous owner had to be aware and not given you full SP but you guys must off seen these type of things many times before.
Regardless of the outcome, the communication between Rob and Chris is fantastic. The way they worked together to get that gearbox out was exemplary 👏. Sorry it didn’t work out guys.
Just shows that people shouldn't assume low miles = good. I'd rather have a high mileage car thats been looked after, than a low mileage ragged neglected one. Can you not get oversized thrust bearings? Or a new crank? Or get crank welded and machined back ?
Exactly this I have a 2017 c4 grand picasso that has just hit 200000 miles mechanically sound interior is a bit rattly now but to be expected with this many miles , kids constantly in and out and citroen is not exactly known for its build quality
Sorry to hear it’s bad news chaps. The first time rob put his foot on the clutch and I heard the noise, I thought that would be caused by end float issues. I had one recently with a similar issue but it was leaking oil out the front main oil seal, due to the amount of movement in the crank. Similar engine in mokka and Astra models. Such a shame. Hopefully you find a way to get it sorted and I would be interested to see what you do to it as I haven’t repaired one yet. Keep up the videos chaps! 👍🏼
The last time I dropped engines and boxes out of vauxhalls was in the 90s. Proper engines that yes did fail but were a breeze to fix. The old overhead cams, red tops etc. As soon as the mk3 cav was finished I was finished with vauxhall. Same so goes for the old 2.8 grannys/sierras and 2.0 pintos, cvhs etc. Once all those died off all we have left is generic crap from the french. My mk5 mondeo engine is just as guilty being part developed with the French. Vauxhall lost its way big time and sold their soul. One word that sends shivers through me now is hearing the word 'ecotec' Mk1 vectras lining up in our scrapyard with not even 80 thou on the clock and 5 years old. Crying shame. Where did vauxhall go wrong

I'm sure the whole SRUK community here are just as angry as me but, it's always so refreshing that you guys take it on the chin and stay positive. I'm certain that's why you have such success and good outcomes the rest of the time. Move on and keep smiling. :)
It could potentially have been done by the garage the old chap bought it from if it had had warranty issues, maybe? I don't think a subscriber would sell it to you knowing that, or you'd like to think so at least. They could've sold it on FB marketplace if they were kicking the problem down the road. Anyway, interesting video!
I’ve just had the same problem with a golf r from copart listed as insurance light damage, someone had done an insurance job on it thrust bearings in the bottom of sump it seems to be related with pushing the clutch down to start the car causing oil starvation to crank when cold
Often the way with so called light damage cars, people find the cost of a mechanical repair too much so have a light crash to get out of it with the insurance money. Always seems to be the really small damage cars that's just had a bump on the wing in my experience. I've actually got one at the moment, easy body repair, wing and headlight, then found the gearbox is knackered once I drove it. Definitely evident before the crash as it's completely dry and howling it's nuts off.
There are lazy drivers like my elderly aunt. Always pulled away from a stop in second gear, never used the handbrake in traffic on a hill, more clutch slip and her Fiesta had a new clutch at 37k.
Did you see what looked like a BlackBox sticker on the rear? I wonder who was actually driving the car? New drivers can easily burn a clutch out in 30k miles. To be fair so can an elderly driver who rides the clutch. I reversed my brand new WRX into my drive once, was a slight incline, and you could smell clutch 🤣🤣
End Float is the amount by which a shaft can move lengthwise i.e. Axially. At is also known as Axial Clearance. The purpose of thrust bearing end float is to provide axial clearance between the thrust collar and the thrust bearing assemblies.
By the sounds of it you have moved it on now but out of curiosity I searched this reg at work for previous parts supply (motor factors). Although not the depot I work at a clutch and flywheel had been supplied to it. But the clutch had been returned. Doesn’t mean to say it didn’t have one though.

Rob I did a clutch on one of those corsas and it is a front bumper off and the alloy frame off leave the actual subframe in place it’s a pain in the bum. The alloy frame is very tight and I had to keep the rad pack supported and I also did a heater matrix on a four year old corsa with 16,000 miles on it. Cars are just built like chocolate now quality is terrible.

Low miles, full Vauxhall service history, customer had car just over a year : no warranty or contribution. I bought accident damaged Mokka from Copart & swapped engine, had customer back on road for under £3,000. Common fault on 1.4 Vauxhalls.

When it was running it sounded like the tappets were really worn. My guess is it's been run low on oil at some point. Those engines are known for burning oil which is probably why they are so expensive used.
Good on you for showing it all how it is. The good, the bad and the ugly of the motor trade.
If it made that noise after i had the work done, I'd immediately ask the garage what's the story with it..
Love the honesty on this channel you show the ones you win and the ones you lose
There is always a chance that the garage did something wrong and patched it back up.
It's a shame that not all subscribers are honourable. Keep your chins up guys. There's a win coming around the corner :)
My wife and I like watching you both, she says you’re like an old married couple 😂
You boys have come a long way, i remember watching your first videos when chris was abit camera shy!!
Cars of gone full cycle. 70s 80s they only had 80 - 100k in them before they were worn out. 90s early 2000s well built and you were generally getting what you paid for. Since then manufacturers havd cost engineered cars into very expensive hunks of junk.
with designed to fail key plastic components in impossible to extract location...
Agree 100% with both of you. And they say we should all be "green", throwaway cars are ecological apparently as long as they get 0.5mpg more
I love the positive attitude lads, keep on trucking!
those small turbos get real hot, termostat 105 celsius and all the cooling issius, but the block and the crankshaft and rods is very good for that heat.
First thing that jumps to
Mind is faulty thrust bearing.
Don't beat yourself too much Rob.
There is no way in hell the owner wasn't aware.
But you guys are in the business of taking risks.
You win some you loose some.
You guys win ratio is incredibly good.
Even if it wasn't what you wanted to be doing you still made a video that was interesting and different. Hope the next one treats you better.
Just shows you guys can get ripped off like the public, except you both make great content and genuine in what you do. If would like to think that the subscriber didn't have the knowledge to know exactly what the fault was thinking with your skills it would be sorted easily, if they did then shame on them. You turned this Vlog into a positive with your attitudes Guys. NEEEXXXTTTTTT 😃😃
I know you won't want to invest any more time if it's going to the scrapyard, but it would be interesting to see inside that sump.
5:31: “What happens to them dual masses when they start wearing out, they start doing that [waves hands and wobbles head], they cause all sorts of damage” 😂😂😂
Another pointless piece of technology that causes more issues than it claims to cure.
Love the open approach on the channel, and the positive attitude.
1.4 turbo , the worst engines they could possibly do .... Had a zafira with a bad engine... Bought another car off copart for the engine , surprise surprise.... Knackered engine.... Even worse than the one on my car ... I'll never touch a vauxhall again
😮 OP
As a few others have said it could be the garage that tucked up the owners.... but keep smiling and on to the next one guys.
Hate it when someone rips you off! Best of luck guys
Loving the positivity rob 😀 well done to you and Chris for smiling through it when others would go ballistic !!! It can’t always be sunshine mate but you would like people to at least be honest !!! Stay safe David 👍👍
Throwing shapes at 5:34 🕺🏿😂
New subscriber just for your guys positivity not to mention your knowledge, I’d be livid tbh at the realisation that is not gearbox issues but a new engine especially if previous owner had to be aware and not given you full SP but you guys must off seen these type of things many times before.
Have my 1998 astra 2.0 euro for 21 years already almost 268000 original kilometers on the clock .Still going strong.
You are so far in, drop the sump and lets have a look at the problem please!!
Always positive guys, a real inspiration for how to deal with the unforeseen. Well-done!
One word that sends shivers through me now is hearing the word 'ecotec'
Mk1 vectras lining up in our scrapyard with not even 80 thou on the clock and 5 years old. Crying shame. Where did vauxhall go wrong
Selling that crock to you blokes, cause you’re just working for a living, is mean.
Respect for the positivity.
Thanks for the content.
Stuff like this is so annoying and frustrating. Honesty is a rarer and rarer commodity these days. I'm sure the whole SRUK community here are just as angry as me but, it's always so refreshing that you guys take it on the chin and stay positive. I'm certain that's why you have such success and good outcomes the rest of the time. Move on and keep smiling. :)
I loved them old Vauxhall clutches you could change them in half and hour and that included tidying your tools away and popping the kettle on
It could potentially have been done by the garage the old chap bought it from if it had had warranty issues, maybe?
I don't think a subscriber would sell it to you knowing that, or you'd like to think so at least. They could've sold it on FB marketplace if they were kicking the problem down the road.
Anyway, interesting video!
5:34 someone needs to put that on repeat and add some trance music.
Well you pays your money and you takes your chances eh? Great attitude from you both, what's the value in getting the hump?
32k miles and had to have the clutch done! That should set off warning bells about the state of the car.
Yep an original oem clutch should last much longer than 30k, even somebody that rides the clutch.
You should have realised this rob.
There are lazy drivers like my elderly aunt. Always pulled away from a stop in second gear, never used the handbrake in traffic on a hill, more clutch slip and her Fiesta had a new clutch at 37k.
It's probably more to do with full bore wheel spin starts, putting excess thrust wear on the fore / aft motion of the crankshaft.

You guys are the perfect example of a working environment and a positive mindset 🏴👍🏻
Guy's l can see in the
comments below
someone has a rear
ended sri & they have
offered it to You ...
You said this is the
first Vauxhall you
have done why not
do an engine swap
it would be a
Fantastic idea & many
i am sure would agree
Please rob & chris have
a think about it , it's all about recycling nowadays 😁😁😁😁
Had that on a 1.4 Turbo Zafira, I feared it as soon as Rob jumped in and depressed the clutch.
Interesting one. Could you do a follow up on what you ended up doing with this car. My vote is for scrapping it!
Loved the video and appreciate the honesty! Very interesting. Keep positive anyway, as you suggest.
Unfortunately fellas not every one is honest as you're selves i have no doubt that you will get something thing out of it always enjoy your enthusiasm and positively when dealt a bit of a challenge take care and stay lucky and healthy looking forward to Sundays video 📹 as usual 😊❤ rob how is the little puppy 🐶 getting on.
Great positivity gents. Nice to see in what can be a very negative world.
I’d say it’s been through what every young man’s car goes thru. A thrashing.
Another fantastic video guys. I watch and enjoy everyone you make and check everyday for the next one looking forward to seeing them.
You two guys are just brilliant
Iv just bought a iveco camper didn't see the hole in wheel arches under bench, needs welded , Iam gonna stay positive 👍
