  • How do you make your pieces fit tightly together? Short video on kerf adjustments. TIP: Test kerf before cutting the whole file to save material from being wasted. A lot left uncovered on this topic, but hopefully still helpful for basic understanding.

I can tell right now that I will be looking at this again. Hopefully I will get the hang of it soon. It's very simple after all.

Too busy slicing things with a laser I bet. I've recently bought a laser from CTR future ltd here in England (great company!) and it's interesting to compare the functionality of Lightburn and Silhouette Studio.

@@biodieseler1 yes exactly! It's slowed some after Christmas now so I keep telling myself I need to find time to make more. Does SS look easier than Lightburn? When I watch Inkscape videos I am always relieved I'm not using that 😆 Lightburn will likely be my go-to if I ever upgrade to a faster laser.

Lightburn and SS seem to be distinctly similar in many respects. You'd pick up L'burn very quickly I'm sure. The main difference would be that it has all the laser control software built in, which also doesn't assume that you are using a camera as the GF webapp does. I've only been using it for a couple of weeks, but I'm very impressed both by how powerful and useable it is. Great UA-cam tutorials too.

hello!! thank you for making this video! what if I am trying to fit two pieces that aren't square (i.e. abstract circle) how does kerf come into play with those types of shapes?

So if we’re doing a cut and fit- it is recommended to always do a Kerf cut for adjustment, correct? This video was awesome. I just got my GF and have learned so much in just two of your videos. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. :)

Yes I recommend doing the kerf test first with your material so you don't cut the full design and then find out it doesn't fit together like you want. If you use the same materials with the same cut settings often, the kerf adjustment should be the same. For example, I like using the birch from HD and have saved the cut settings in the GF, I have been able to use the same kerf adjustments from sheet to sheet. If all else fails, I see no shame in a little wood glue 🤷😁

Do you like silhouette studio better than Inkscape? I’m very new and just started learning design so I was just wondering Nice video btw!

Since I was already a vinyl crafter using the Silhouette Studio software, that is what I stayed with for the Glowforge. If you'll be learning a new software regardless then I would recommend trying inkscape first. One because it is free while silhouette studio will cost money, and 2 because a lot of people in the Glowforge Facebook group are more familiar with inkscape and can help you also. If you find that inkscape is too difficult, which many people do, then I would suggest silhouette studio next.
