    This was really helpful, I contacted customer service online about this (Feb '20). After asking several times the same question, "Is it possible to vent the output of the filter you sell to the outdoors? I don't want to vent inside my space." their customer service finally answered "Yes, all models come with an 8-foot long hose that you can use for outdoor venting through a window.
    " It appears that's not the case and the unit vents out the sides but it does an excellent job so outdoor venting isn't needed, even better!

    Thanks for sharing your initial thoughts. I really would like to move my Glowforge to my studio and out of my wood shop. But I live in a small town on Main St and my only window in the studio is right on the sidewalk where people walk by. So that’s just not going to work for me. But… I’m not sure about how long that filter will last. And @ $250 to replace… I’m just not sure. I look forward to seeing how this works for you. In the mean time… I’m loving my ac infinity fan and the adapters i got from you.

      Glad the adapters are working well for you! My filter is still working great for me but I only cut acrylic and I don’t run my machine full time. If you cut wood regularly you’ll fill up the filter fairly quick.

    I have enjoyed your videos. I bought a GF with this filter back in August. I am a real novice. My daughter was suppose to run it (she has the skills) but she moved and has kinda ditched me. LOL Apparently our filter is getting pretty full, and it has not even been used that much (big complaint for the expense and no info was ever given that the filter filled up that fast). We did the added in filter sheet you referenced. I just can't see spending $250 to replace a filter every 3 months. I have a lot to learn if I plan to keep this machine that has just been sitting for the past 5 months. I wish someone would do a in person retreat to have hands on learning. These machines are just not that easy to use like they advertised. Feeling a little frustrated with it and the $$ spent.

    I initially ordered the filter with my pro but I have emailed them and asked to cancel it due to the horror stories I see constantly on the glowforge groups I am in. People are saying that it’s filling up after 3-4 cuts. I had planned on using pre filters to try and extend the life of the filter but that leaves another issue. We already know that filters are $250 but they’re also out of stock almost always. I’ve seen people say their filter filled up and now their machines just sits because they can’t get replacements. That’s a big deterrent for me. I watched your other video comparing the inline fans and I think that’s the best route for me to go. I will be cutting wood almost exclusively so I worry about the filters filling up faster than other materials. I also have a one year old who will be napping in the house while I work so I need the quietest option. My studio has two windows but they don’t open. We have decided to have someone come and run the vent through the wall. Do you think the inline fan is the best option in my situation? Also, can the hose be removed from the wall when not in use to prevent moisture from getting into the hose and possibly the machine itself? Thanks!

    • @MartinsonManufacturing
      @MartinsonManufacturing  3 роки тому +1

      Alicia, I think an inline fan would be great in your situation. It's quieter than the GF filter and 100x cheaper, and wood does take the biggest toll on the filter. I primarily cut acrylic so maybe that's why mine is still working great. Even though I'm using the GF air filter right now I still love the inline fans, they are really great solutions.
      As far as preventing moisture from getting in, there are quick disconnects such as these:
      www.lowes.com/pd/MagVent-MagVent-MV-180-Magnetic-Dryer-Vent-Coupling/5001462491?cm_mmc=shp-_-c-_-prd-_-plb-_-google-_-pla-_-171-_-sosyearroundheating-_-5001462491-_-0&placeholder=null&ds_rl=1286981&gclid=Cj0KCQiA3smABhCjARIsAKtrg6Kr2EggatLSbkwCIuKfosBBcfLTlxiEr6Kjs04Iw8tIT1pXziqLMrQaAhATEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds
      But a simple blast gate like this would probably work just fine:

    Great information in the video. Curious if you have looked at either the bofa fume extractor or the fumex fume extractors. These are both commercial grade extractors with multiple filters, including a hepa and pre filters specifically for the laser cutter industries

    • @MartinsonManufacturing

      @jameslewis5385 3 роки тому

      @@MartinsonManufacturing not sure how cost effective those other options will be at least on initial cost. But my guess would be that the individual filter components would last longer and give users the flexibility of replacing individual components of filtration rather than just one big filter. They are also commercial grade units so they will have higher airflow capacity and bigger internal fan.

    Thanks, your videos are informative. I'm a little confused after the video. The AC infinity fan is no longer required after you got the Glowforge filter, you confirmed that in a previous comment. But, I'm wondering if it is still preferable to have it inline somehow to further reduce noise? It seems to me you said the inline fan is quieter than the glowforge filter. Is there a way to use these together that is quieter? Or are you now suggesting just to use the Glowforge filter only? Could you give your baseline suggestion as it stands now? I will have it by the window with option to vent out the window, but that seems inconvenient. On the other hand, $250 for these replacement filters seems very steep in price. I am planning to use your link to purchase.

    • @MartinsonManufacturing
      @MartinsonManufacturing  3 роки тому +2

      Bob great questions. The inline fan is great at pulling out the fumes quietly, but it's not powerful enough to push the fumes through the thick Glowforge air filter. You need a stronger motor, but with a stronger motor comes more noise. I personally think the sound of the Glowforge air filter is not bad at all. It does have some noise for sure, but it's a deep hum, as opposed to a high pitch wind.
      To clarify, i'd suggest using the inline fan OR the Glowforge air filter, not trying to combine both. There'd be no benefit to it. We're all looking for a low cost, low noise solution, but no one has come up with one yet.
      If you have access to a window i'd recommend picking up an AC Infinity fan and venting out the window. It's super quiet and a great solution. To minimize the inconvenience of venting out the window i'd just recommend to spend the time and money and make/buy a nice window insert/setup that you're happy with. Take the time to do it right once and then never worry about it again.
      I bought the air filter because I was living in an apartment at the time and fumes were an issue with neighbors around me.
      Hope that helps my friend. Let me know if you have any more questions or I forgot to answer one of them.

      It's still working well for me and I haven't had to change the filter yet since the date of my video. I've been changing the pre filters regularly and I think that has helped. I also cut more acrylic than I do wood and acrylic is easier on the filter than wood. I also moved across state and had a baby too so I've had a few months of non use. Hope some of that helps. If you're cutting wood several hours a day everyday I think you'd have a much different experience than me.

    Can you answer - Do you prefer GF Air filter OVER Infinity Fan? (Taking the venting out the window out of the equation) - 2ndly - Does the Infinity leave any residual smell from cutting? Third, have you had to change your filter yet? - Lastly, one would assume the Air Filter box from GF initially comes with a new filter or do you have to buy the Air Filter PLUS the replacement cartridge? - Thank you in advance.

    • @MartinsonManufacturing
      @MartinsonManufacturing  3 роки тому +2

      Great questions Rick. I absolutely prefer the GF air filter over venting out the window with the AC Infinity fan. It’s less components and I’m a minimalist so the GF air filter wins for me.
      2ndly, The AC Infinity fan is not leak free itself and you may have some leaks, but they can be remedied. Venting out the window means you have more components more attachment points which means more potential problem areas for fume leakage. When I was running the in-line fan my setup was completely leak free but you have to buy the right components and put a bit of silicone caulking on the fan itself.
      Third, I still haven’t had to change the filter yet. I’ve also been using a layer of pre filter on top of the GF filter and have been throwing those out monthly to try and keep my GF air filter clean.
      Lastly, yes, when you buy the GF air filter it comes with a new filter cartridge.
      Happy Glowforging my friend
