You know your bass when you play it without frets exactly the same
You are always having some brilliant bass tones, and I guess you don't create them in post production.
I can get good bass sounds with a Kemper and MBritt profiles... but actually this is to costly. :( All my other tries are not clear enough, muddy, noisy, ...
If you really want to have more beginners train the bass, could you make a video on a cheap but good bass tone setup (or some... pick, tapp, slap, ...)?
I would really appreciate!
whys that sound like castlevania 2 music
Why don't you talk more about the instruments you are playing? I'm not so interested in watching you be a virtuoso once again as I am in learning about the various instruments you choose to play. Am I the only one who feels this way?
Could you add some conversation about the instruments to your videos? For example, you recently played an electric bass with nylon strings, but didn't tell us how the heck nylon strings can work on an instrument that normally *requires* steel strings in order for the pickups to work. I really wanted to know and it was the MOST interesting thing about that bass - even more interesting than what it sounds like, or how incredibly well you can play it. I felt let down, to be honest. Your videos could be twice as good, and it wouldn't take much more effort from you.
Would sound better without than annoying drum machine in the background
LeFay, just give this dude a signature model already!
I'd definitely consider buying that!
He's not even mentioned on their website as one of their premier players! 🤔
The Bass sounds fantastic, yes! But, honestly, it looks awful.
@@pinballwizzard3981 indeed it does
for real, this channel is the best lefay d-tuner advert they could ever hope for.
That's a space-age bass. Didn't even know something like that existed. You have amazingly clean playing/technique and some super beautiful melodies in this song. It was amazing, as usual.
Guy's a top-tier musician. No doubt about that!
oh yeah the man is possibly the best player I have ever witnessed, so clean and precise.
if you like the melodies check out tears in heaven by eric clapton
Yeah. It's based on a Hindustani instrument called the SAROD. Check it out.
Only believe it if you see it played live.
Of all your compositions, for some reason I always find myself coming back to this one. I can’t explain, it’s just perfect in every way.
No lie, it's absolutely gorgeous. The only issue with it is how short it is.
Крутая мелодия.
You are one of my absolute favorite bassists EVER!!
And I’m a drummer.

@@afonsodeportugal no lol I'm responding to the op
Absolutely no exaggeration, this is INSANE, that tone , God level bass playin. Even though Charles isn't out there playin full packed arenas, he's among if not better than most of the top listed bass players out there.
Fully agree
Who does he play with? Would like to see him in a team setting
it is great tone but it has nothing to do with what the bass is made from. Its all about the pickups and amp when it comes to electric instruments.
Look he has 383,000 views in 2 days. More people than you can get to come to a show.
I agree 100%, I've been around technical musicians most of my life and I've never seen anyone play the bass like him.
It doesn't even seem like you're showing off, your playing is so well practiced that it's just naturally amazing
Agreed, just smiling like he is having fun.
Gently, faintly smiling as he performs musical feats hitherto not attempted by mortal men. What a legend.
I feel like there are only a handful of people in the world that could play this instrument like this
Remco’s Groove Lab on UA-cam is a guy who plays his fretless bass and uploads groove sessions
@@thejadehen2907 Yeah I'm subbed to him, he's great too
Charles Berthoud and Steve DiGiorgio, that's it
I will check out these other players that you mentioned here but Charles is not just very fast or the fastest player on bAss. He puts together these melodies and arrangements that are out of this world...so he might be the best bass player in the world. the practice and dedication it took to get that good like immeasurable, lol.
I think there's only one dude who could play like Charles and that's Charles.
bro even as an experienced cellist, i'm so impressed by this. the amount of precision it takes to ambidextrously hit all those notes is insane!
It sounds pretty clean.. That tune at the beginning was sounding like blues.. Very amazing bass playing Charles.
This dude is undoubtedly one of the world best bassist ever!!!!
Seriously, Charles, I can't watch this video enough! This particular bass is the most beautiful sounding instrument I've ever heard, and it truly shines in a master's hands.
When you're so good at bass your song sounds like a midi file
It's definitely giving me like midi or Sega Genesis type musical vibes
It does sound like a MIDI file :) how bizarre!
Toejam and Earl vibes
I'm 98% sure this is on the Transport Tycoon soundtrack.
I know what you mean but i guess you don't really know what a midi file is ;-)
Sounds amazing. You have been an incredible influence for me to start bass and I'm getting quite good.
Nice, looking forward to seeing videos in the future 😎
You should share your progress!
Heck yeah! I'll try to upload a video👺
@@Bass-Sama87 We are definitely waiting for your video dude. 😌
@@Bass-Sama87 do it :)
Just insane - imagining a concert with you and Bela Fleck trading riffs: the audience would be in orbit! 🤯🙌🙌🎶🎶
No one...no bassist alive...has written something this badass. Not Wooten. Not Claypool. Not Vail...seriously, I watch this video at least once a week and it blows me away every time.
With you on this comment. Unbelievable bass nothing like this one
😂 same. It's got to the stage now that UA-cam just pops it in my feed on a regular basis, it just knows.
I was gonna say Charles Berthoud but then I realized this was his channel lol
Magnificent
Angel is in the house🤘
It makes me very happy that talented people like you recognize the mastership of this bass-man
It not the bass that sounds amazing it’s the player
Thanks!
Bass made out of Berthoud when?
You play bass how I always dreamed of playing. Like the little finger tapping notes that go in real quick, I always imagined doing that once I got good enough. I was also trying to work on having my right hand technique similar to yours. I picked up a different passion in life though so it's nice to see it realized!
You’re really killing it lately. You deserve to be on a big stage, with a great band! I would pay to see it.
Your playing lands at the perfect crossing between technique and musicality. All your solos are so impressive, show off your skill, and make it obvious how hard you've worked to get this good. And they're also just pure fun to listen to!
Lowkey when I’m asked what my favorite bass lines are I don’t say stuff by Wooten anymore I say stuff by Charles
You are truly on a whole different level of incredible. You are beyond great, this is just insanely musical perfection...
Amazing bass playing skills! Honestly, to me it sounds exactly like one of the many, many presets of a 'bass sound' of a synthesizer, the 'cleanliness' of the sounds as some have pointed out, actually makes it sounds like some top tier FM based synth, with many operators.
Title correction: This STEEL fretless bass played by THE BERTHOUD sounds INSANE!
BERTHOUD correction: This STEEL fretless BERTHOUD played by THE BERTHOUD sounds BERTHOUD!
I was just about to leave this exact comment. The bass doesn't do anything by itself (except look pretty). In the hands of a master like Charles, insanity ensues!
Really? I'm pretty sure the steel aspect of it gives it a brighter tone than a standard fretless.
Not sure, never heard a steel fretless in person. Also its an edited video with spliced in instruments and enhanced clarity due to the quality of the mic and software likely. Id love to hear, Live, him playing both back to back. Wow that'd be a great show.
This bass is so wonderfully twangy and bendy, and you're so precise... This should be your signature model! As far as this song goes, I'm working on a video game of my own and this would be a PERFECT theme song!
Long time viewer, this is my favorite solo you've ever done. So clean, so much technique and that fretless stank is incredible!
My God Man! How GOOD ARE YOU? Just insane playing, I'm in Awe. These videos of your playing a complete song is so addictive!
You inspired me so much. I started playing bass in December 2021, and I’m coming from 8 years of classically training on violin. I won’t stop playing bass until I catch up with you! Now back to rocksmith.
Nice, hope you enjoy it!
@@CharlesBerthoud haha another one down that will never stop, btway how is your Gipsy Jazz try it with the Rosenberg trio/familie your level I guess👍🎶🎶👍
There is much more as in all sorts of jazz enjoy your time with all... 🎶👍
I’ve been watching Charles and I just realized that he’s become one of the top technical bassists on the planet. This is phenomenal playing!
Indeed.
Some how after all the tricks, licks, and everything in between
I find it like Beans without Salt
Or 🥪 without the 🥜 butter
I disagree..... He IS the top technical bass player on the planet. If anyone could show me proof of anyone better pound for pound, I'll wait........ And wait.......... And wait......... 😂
@@terrycolletti6793 victor wooten
@@Ethan-ve2hq I love Victor Wooten. He is an insane bassist. I still think Charles is better imo!
@@terrycolletti6793 Agreed, at this point I think he might be better. But they are both so incredibly good that it could come down to how they are feeling that day.
man, that's some of your finest playing to date and its on a FRETLESS bass! when i saw the thumbnail it made me think of Vigier. what blows me away though is that its not just a metal fretboard, its actually a metal slab that has been inlaid into a piece of wood judging by the ebony-like sides and fretmarkers on the edge. awesome!
If that neck was solid steel it would be SOOO heavy.
wow, you just have become one of the best bassists in the world, play like this so tuned in a fretless bass is insane. congrats
They need a LOVE button to the left of the Like for these special artists that just simply stand out from the rest. Rocked it Charles!
Incredible. The most impressive is the fast fingerstyle, can never get enough of that! Your intonation is fantastic on fretless too absolute legend
Could be heavily edited ya know....
Every time I see an upload from you, I know that it's going to be several minutes of pure joy. Thanks Charles! I'm always impressed at the huge palette of available sounds you discover and introduce us to!
You are the ultimate master of bass :) big respect!
WOW, that was beautiful. Your tone and technique and compositional skills are amazing.
The tone is entirely up to the pickups here, but ok boomer.🤡
@@spanqueluv9er BS, ears and hands play a bigger part. You can give a player a custom Alembic and he could sound like crap. You didn't even mention outboard effects, speakers, strings and EQ ... do you even play bass ? Ok millenial.
@@spanqueluv9er ps, I have been playing for 50 years, probably longer than you have been on earth.
You never cease to amaze me Charles. What a great display of talent. You're such a great musician.
Thanks!
Two mind states in the one tune! Was shear pleasure to start with, great funk groove and melody and the bass is sounding killer then we get to 1:20 in and I go from pleasure to mind blown! Man I know you already have some mad skills but the right hand finger speed just took the tune, and my head, to another level. Bravo Maestro.
That sounds awesome!
I'm actually surprised that there wasn't a "twangy" tone to it. I didn't think that the metal on metal sound would be so smooth.
Well it's charles so... 😁
@@Tammy-xf4kz Nailed it. This would probably be twangy or buzzy in the hands of most mortals
Flatwounds to take the edge off
Me: You couldn't possibly amaze me any more
Charles: Hold my beer
So clean, fretless, that skill. My mind is exploding! Unbelievable!
Absolutely amazing playing and composing.
good job sonny Jim ....you are the best out there and very talented with all your music.....surprised you don't have a contract or record deal. I bet the other UA-camrs wished they could play like you .....keep up the good work
Serious get this guy a band asap. Someone someone quirky preferred. Lead and rhythm bass with steel drum and harp with a sitar instead of a guitar. Throw in some maracas and a bagpipe and that'd be sick. Just a bunch of different instruments from different cultures into a groovy melting pot of deliciousness. XD would be so amazing if someone did this.

amazing musical composition and performance!
THIS is mind blowing. Precision of slap is something out of this world.
The bass has the biggest pickup I've ever seen.
If I hadn't seen you playing this piece, I wouldn't have believed a human being could play like that! Mind well and truly blown - chapeau to you!
Just threw my bass out the window. Dang! this guy is so talented and that bass tone is SICK!!!
After working 60 hour weeks, there's not much better than coming home on Friday, drinking a beer(s) and watching your vids. Love the jams man.
Everything was so beautiful about this offering. The bass, the playing, the technique, the feel. Thank-you Charles…. so enjoyable!
After watching so many-many of your videos...I'm sure that I've come to the conclusion that you are the best bass player that I've ever seen/heard. Your skillset is light-years beyond on point. Thank you for posting your videos on UA-cam. Be well.
This is very musical and melodic.... how you get the pitch to be that perfect is super impressive
Oh man... I could listen to that all day. What a great groove...
Absolutely incredible! I love how you used to this approach to illuminate a new flourish of creativity, some of your best work Charles!
If only I could have filmed my sons reaction to this - he was playing lego within earshot and without stopping building started clapping along to the rhythm and eventually moving his whole body to it - a testament to how truly musical Charles is!
I was too busy picking my jaw up off the floor to dance along as well...
This hit that funky sweet spot. So satisfying
Every time you play something new bass or tune its played with conviction wonderful style and no one comes close to your technique. You are one of my favorite musicians I have had the pleasure to listen to. The god Apollo has truly bless you ....cheers
The way you play is insane, too, Charles. The bass is simply incredible. Thanks for sharing your enormous gift with us. It is amazing!.
Insane indeed! Another level of playing altogether. I made a living playing bass for many years, but you have convinced me that I need to just put mine back in the case lol!
@@mr.evasion I agree. It’s irritating when people like Charles show what the bass can do and you see people wanting to give up due to the skill and dedication of others
@@mr.evasion Not sure what you mean by "no to you and the others" but I did/do "get off on it" lol. My comment was a bit tongue in cheek and I certainly won't put my bass back in the case, just a way of complimenting him. He is indeed extraordinary. Blessings.
Bro you need to take it out of the case and learn something new :)
@@edesbalazs Just a tongue in cheek way to give him kudos. He is indeed a monster. But I will never put my bass in the case. Music is not what I do, it's who I am! Blessings.

Impeccable skill and tone. Joy to listen to.
Holy shit man that series of little runs at 1:30 was out of this world.

Charles- I’ve been playing bass for over 20 years and I can say with confidence that you’re the best player I’ve had the pleasure to witness. I can slap circles around most fellow bassists for days but you are a force to be reckoned with! What a pleasure. What a dream. Thank God for people like you. Keep killing it brother. I’m in awe every time 😳🥰
I always forget how good fretless bass sounds until I watch your videos.
You probably used every fingering technique there is... for both the left and right hands. And every note was fast & clean as hell ! ! !
Hats off to you dude!
The sound is beautiful, full rich and bright, it's what I go for when recording bassists in studio. What's "insane" is your playing!!!

Parts of this sound like it should be a track on A Show of Hands. I love your artistry! Keep painting beautiful music pictures :)
It's great to see you developing your own unique style and voice - it's not just the playing and technical bits, your note and groove selection is super tasteful and I can hear a bunch of things from all styles interpreted in a thoughtful manner - you are not just learning and copying this stuff from something you saw :)
Very original and awesome, I just wanted to state the obvious here..
I have to say mate, you've sure as hell got the hang of this Bass playing thing!!!

I scrolled down to read some of the comments while listening, and my brain immediately tricked me into thinking multiple instruments were playing. You're a master at your craft. Mozart is jealous that his compositions weren't this good.

Very impressive, never heard these sounds from a bass guitar…well done!
If you saw your views are increasing, but there are no new likes, just remember that I cannot like your videos more than once. I think you're the most talented bass player ever! and you're improving at an exponential rate, which is almost impossible at this level. Gorgeous bass BTW 👌👌
This is my favorite bass solo I’ve ever heard. I’ve probably listened to it 15-20 times and even sent it to my brother and my parents. Dude you rock!
I remember asking my 'classically' trained bassist friend, "Can you play chords on the bass?" And he looked at me like I was asking him something blasphemous. I'm seeing more and more electric bassists, standing bassists, celloists, playing CHORDS and why NOT?! You CAN! It sounds great to me! I love it.
Hot damn! That sounds absolutely killer! Love that tone!!
Charles you are the best player.I believe you are now ready to take your playing to the next level. You have you compose your own solos.godspeed bro
