Very helpful video! I've just done my master cylinder using this as my guide, thanks :)
great video easy to follow full of clear info, very helpful ,,,,
Good video!
Just about to do mine so glad I found this vid. But as mines a left hand drive the access is even worse!
Thank you
Wish someone had a video of how to remove the bolt under the brake booster
A problem with the T3 Transporters is that the clutch pedal 'locks high' - and pressing It hard blows the nylon tube off the banjo bolt on the master cylinder. Apparently something happens with the clutch release in the bell housing - something is preventing the clutch fork moving. Anybody know how to solve this? Engine got to come out? TIA!
I also have dirty fluid should I bleed before or after replacing master cylinder? Thank you
Hi my clutch pedal became so loose and won’t engage in gear now? Like there’s no fluid I can’t see any leaks
Dammit! Just fitted a slave cylinder as my clutch is dragging and hard to get into gear. Thought maybe the slave wasnt actuating fully, now I'm wondering if I'm gonna be changing the master tomorrow. Cant get any pressure in the pedal atm but will rig up my eazibleed tomorrow.
Good luck johnguy1969
Sometimes, my ‘96 T4 bucks like it’s trying to go into gear when the clutch is fully engaged. Then it is difficult to put into first gear. Are these similar to your symptoms? My mechanic thinks I’m crazy because a few times I’ve left it with him it runs perfectly.
Exactly the same BP Rich. If you prod the clutch and then change gear (like your mechanic probably does) then the problem doesn't effect you much. Its when you hold the clutch for a while and particularly when not at the fully depressed position. I found that manoeuvring in reverse was getting dangerous. As you feather the clutch to reverse into spaces it starts to drag you faster than you want to go.
If you are not loosing fluid then its the Master cylinder. If you are loosing fluid then its the salve cylinder
Hiya, I've a VW T4....2003. 2.5 Tdi LWB.
Can i ask if the clutch slave cylinder inside or outside the transmission box...???
Kind regards Simon Day.
How did you find the 2.4d on your Autosleeper?
Hi David. Its never going to be quick😁 but it sounded great, never gave a moments bother and felt like it could happily do the moon and back. If I was buying another T4, I would be less concerned about how a non turbo 2.4 had been treated / serviced and driven, than a Turbo version.
If you are a relaxed driver then I would recommend it.
Good😀
Thanks 😄
Is there anyway to test the master cylinder on the bench, to verify that it is that that's the problem. I've got mine off and it seams to be working OK. Any input is welcome.
If you bock the outlet port with an appropriate bolt and try to operate the cylinder. it should not be possible to operate it. If you can then the seals are gone. It should be a dead stop if you have hydraulic fluid in it or it should feel like a very strong spring if there is just air in it.
Hi having just had a bracket put to hold pedal box everything seemed ok then other day clutch pedal wouldn’t come right up ! I manually pushed the pedal to see what was happening and a gush of air is coming out is this the master cylinder
Either masterc ylinder or the Servo. Most likely the master cylinder though.
Should of fitted the clutch pedal box strengthening 3 bolt bracket for £10 whilst you were there.
I did👍

Hi my clutch pedal is staying flat to the floor what could this be ?
Return spring on pedal failed
Get your tester on that brake fluid, looks like pond water!
I have saved it for later experimentation because im still not clear why its Sooo black👍
It's turned dark because of the master cylinder failing inside 👍 mine did the exact same. can also be caused by the fabric braided hose between the reservoir and the master starting to break down inside
