I modded my 3DS for my birthday. This baby is almost 11 years old and I’ve been hesitating for like a year but I finally did it when I noticed it was becoming slower to read cartridges when I swapped them. I had to preserve my games and my save files at all cost. Knowing the eshop had shut down and online will die soon, I knew the 3DS modding community was more active than ever.
I did have some trouble because I had to reformat my SD card, but once I did, everything went smoothly. I did dump my games and transfers my save files to the dumped versions, and I also got myself cool things and games I missed out on. It’s not like it’s gonna change Nintendo’s revenue anyway, they don’t sell them anymore and some of my favorite titles are like 10 years old.
While I was a bit nervous, I really enjoyed the process. It was the best birthday present I ever got, apart from my own Blåhaj that same day.
I might help my friends mod their 3DSes so we can play together, or at least they can enjoy their systems to the fullest now that Nintendo gave up on them.

For PS2 you can turn off the bright colors when launching with OPL (I think it's called debug colors in the options), remember to save after changing it too.

One thing I would suggest for the future... written guides are god when it comes to console soft-modding. video guides are often outdated and may have broken links. The latest updated PS2 guide may have told you about USB compatibility and other issues you may run into. There are also guides for 3DS on how to get larger SD/micro sd cards working, for instance mine has a 128gb micro sd

Pro tips for your hacked PS2:
1 - You can turn off the flashing colors in the OPL menu by disabling "Debug colors"
2 - I strongly recommend u to use the latest OPL releases, as they support exFAT and have less problems with fragmented files
3 - OPL has a feature called VMC ( Virtual Memory Card ) , not all games support it, but i recommend u to turn it on in games that do, this will help saving u some bucks if you aren't willing to spend some bucks in a bunch of Memory cards

I've been modding my consoles since like... 2005 lol when i first learned you could do it via code and not necessarily hardware. I've modded: OG Xbox, PSP, PS2, PS3, XB360, Vita, 3DS, Wii, Wii-U, and Switch
The enjoyment I get from playing old games on its intended hardware makes it all worth it, and i love adding new functionality to my consoles, such as being able to play wii-u with an xbox 360 controller (since I dont have a wii-u pro controller)

I got into modding with the Wii in 2010 due to an in joke with my sister - I learned all I needed to get Brawl to play the Pirates of the Caribbean theme. This led to me just modding consoles for convenience and fun over the years - I've since done the 3DS, PS Vita, PS2, PS3, DSi, OG Xbox, Wii U, and Switch.
Switch modding is super safe if you're not pirating games or cheating IMO. I've never had any trouble with it.

I own a modded ps2, wii u, 3ds, psp and switch. Definitely something I reccomend to anyone who cares a little bit about preservation and unlocking additional functionalities for these systems.
The mig switch is definitely not something I'd reccomend for any purposes beyond backing up your own cartridges. The best solution for the switch is still a little bit on the riskier side, by solding a modchip to the board. If you can find a good technician then its worth it.

  • @mewnuxwolf

I've modded 5 Consoles so far! 3 Nintendo 3DS, one Switch and one Wii U
3 of them weren't even my consoles.
It's been almost a year since I modded my first console which was my new 3DS that I got for my birthday. Then my brother asked me if I could mod his and his gf's 3DS and that worked (mostly) without any problems. They both didn't have any experience in modding but I felt confident enough to mod them even though my only experience was that one 3DS. Later my brother asked me if I could mod his Switch next and I agreed even though I was not confident at all but somehow that worked out.
I've just modded my Wii U a couple of days ago, I was thinking about it a lot for a couple of months but I was too scared to mod my Wii U but I'm very glad I did it and I am kinda proud of myself.
I think the hardest console I've modded so far was the Switch and one day I will definitely mod my own Switch one day but I will wait just a few years longer.
I was super nervous when modding all of them mainly because I was scared of breaking something and I didn't trust myself enough at first but like I said, I'm very happy that I got this experience and I'm way more confident when it comes to modding

I love my modded wii u. It's a super easy mod to do these days, and the stuff you get access to is incredible. Wii u basically has a wii built in, so while the disc reader they put in it doesn't read gamecube games, it perfectly can run gamecube game backups natively in nintendont, just like a modded wii can. So you get access to the whole wii u library, wii, gamecube, virtual console games which you can play DS games using the wii u tablet as the second screen, and then everything else you can emulate on retroarch.
One of my favorite things is that bloopair lets you pair controllers from other systems to it, like ps5 controllers, but especially you can connect the switch online SNES, and N64 controllers. It's awesome to have access to the larger library of n64 games that went to wii u virtual console, + whatever ones actually run well when injected, and to be able to play with a true to form wireless N64 controller. And the snes switch controllers are awesome if doing some retro gaming.

Interesting video and glad you learned a lot from trial and error. The first modded system I got was a PS1, where all you need to allow it to play backed up games were to get one of those parallel port game cheat device and plug it in. The DSi and DS Lites were easy to mod using the R4 cartridges.
My favorite system to mod would be the Wii. It is easy to pick it up at swampmeets and yard sales for like $5 for the console. Use a network USB adapter and letterbomb method and in a few minutes it is modded.
The PS2 was the most time consuming on my first time. Like you I refused to buy the pre-made Free McBoot from eBay or Amazon and made my own. What I messed up on what attaching a hard drive to the back with the network adapter and it refused to work. Found out that there are certain hard drives that would not work properly with it. Once I figured that out it was a breeze.
Hope to see more of your modding videos.

Modding most PS3 consoles is also a very simple process that only requires a USB stick. I would rate it a 1/10 in difficulty.
If you ever want to take it to the next level and learn some basic soldering skills, you should check out how to mod the Xbox 360 with the RGH3 method. It's a 3.5/10 in difficulty.

  • @kryzethx
    @kryzethx 8 місяців тому

3DS, Wii and WiiU are definitely some of the easiest systems to mod, but they can very easily go wrong if you follow the wrong guide, or watch an outdated tutorial.
PS2 is a bit more complicated to do, without the correct hardware (I used the DVD-R method, but it was not easy).
Oh, and the Playstation Vita is another easy one, and with easy access to PSP emulation, alongside NoPayStation to download any official games you might want, it's insanely useful
Switch is relatively easy, but the guides are still being updated, and the simplest hack requires a specific hardware model (only the older models can do it, with specific serial codes) and a little clippy thing that slides into the right joycon slot for ease of access. It's also pretty safe, especially if you only boot into the virtual Switch environment, since that doesn't have access to Nintendo's servers. If you're only playing backups gathered from other sources, it's the best way to use it, that keeps the primary console environment completely sheltered from the virtual one.
I've not gone for PS3 or Xbox 360 modding just yet, since I still use those consoles for their online functionality (I like achievements and trophies...), but if the achievement servers ever go down, they'll be next on my list, if possible.
I've also got a hardmodded Gamecube, but I had to buy one that was pre-built, since the sofrmod process is annoying to set up (having to load up a real game, before loading into the SP2SD for access to games on SD card), and the hardmod process involves soldering. It has an SD card reader in place of the disc tray, which makes it incredibly easy to transfer saves between Dolphin/PC and the physical Gamecube (the only reason for this is because I want access to real GBA link functionality, and I also want to use speed-up on Pokemon Colosseum/Gale of Darkness)

Enjoyed the video. Not a lot of people talk about the process of modding outside of tutorials so it's a breath of fresh air to hear something not about homebrew I've already heard of.
If you ever decide to mod another console, the Wii U is probably a cool one to try. Process is lengthy but I think it's 100% worth it now that the online services are shutting down for good, as it allows from homebrew like Pretendo to finally get some spotlight. (They brought back Miiverse for the Wii U and the 3DS which is awesome) Switch modding might also become more mainstream now that the next gen console is right around the corner, but like you said, it won't be happening any time soon.

+1 to the WiiU, through backwards compatibility you can play from gamecube to WiiU games, and use emulators for everything before gamecube, effectively the WiiU can play the entire nintendo catalog pre-nintendoswitch, only excluding the 3DS, because it can actually play NDS games.
What can be a pain sometimes is setting up the vWii. but other than that if you follow the guide (wiiu.hacks.guide) it's usually pain free, i honestly would like to see a web of this type for PS2 and PS3.

Wii was my 1st project; Wii U, then 3ds. Stumbled upon it while experiencing insomnia. Good distraction for hardship. Anton Retro as you mentioned is great. Funky Scott 47 is amazing and keeps current. Great to follow. These projects make custom gifts for the children. If I use memory above 32Gb, I reformat it to Fat32. This way, I can confirm a 2Tb drive and a 512GB SDXC card. (Since Wii’s can hold Music and Video too). Nice work on your video. I will subscribe. Thanks for your insight and perspectives.

Like, the best gifts for children. So amazingly Custom to any age and game tastes. 3ds’ are expensive, though a Wii you can still find at a second hand store for 20~50 dollars.

The more people who mod their consoles, the better. Also, USB drives are backward compatible. 3.0 and onward added more pins in their design to get more speed. But, they were designed in a way that old 2.0 ports would work fine. Probably the reason it worked ( I'm guessing with my experience with Wii U modding ) it's probably just the way you formatted it. Usually, it's either not formated with the wrong type like NTFS, or with the wrong allocation size. But all together, great video:)

I've software modded 2 3DS-family consoles (a blue old 2DS and a red old 3DS XL), a PSP 3004, a Vita 1000, a Wii (I think that's it, but i may be missing a couple more). The process is usually almost as rewarding as the final result... Usually.
Hiccups have happened, but, in my experience so far, they have been a lot more easily fixable than hardware-related mishaps... If I had friends that wanted their consoles soft-modded, I'd offer them my help in an instant... Hardware-related modding (especially complicated small soldering), I'd be feeling much more reluctant to help with...

I know it's not the same like cartridges and disc but I'm so glad that I have 6 modded consoles like 1. Nintendo Wii that has retros like Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis, MAME ARCADE that has Over 10,000 Games, 2. Xbox 360 RGH that has 1,027 original Xbox & Xbox 360 Games that I'm trying to sell 3. PlayStation 4 w/ firmware 9.0FW has 60 Games 4. PlayStation 4 that's not modded so I could buy games at the PlayStation Store that has 127 Games 5. Nintendo switch that also has retros as well that has 223 switch games 6. My all-time favorite console that I own is the PlayStation 3 slim that has 300 exclusive best games that's on the ps3, and not only it also you can play PlayStation 1 and Playstation 2 games and the PlayStation 3 console has a game shop that you could download more games so I'm really glad that I have this set of consoles and im played in on an 75in LG with LG sound system

Out of the 4 old consoles I have, the PS Vita and PS3 (Fats or early Slims) are the easiest to mod. Anyone can do it at home and they offer a lot of perks.
The PS3 can run 99% of the PS1 library and roughly 70~80% of the PS2 library flawlessly or very close to flawlessly depending on the game. I have 72 PS2 backups on my PS3 and only like 6 or 7 have minor issues plus they have a better image quality than a real PS2. The Vita pretty much has a PSP under the hood and has great PS1 compatibility so it's a 3 in 1 deal. PS1 games look pretty sharp on the Vita screen so it's my prefered way of playing them, they even have save states and disc swapping for multi disc games. Modding a Vita also grants you access to use SD Cards instead of propriety memory cards.
Then I have an original Xbox and Xbox 360 but I bought those already pre modded because swapping hard drives on the original Xbox is a mess and the 360 is the hardest console to mod in my opinion. They're my consoles for 6th/7th gen multiplatforms and of course their own exclusives. The HDMI adapter for the original Xbox is possibly the best one out of the 6th gen systems and 99% of the games support progressive scan.

I remember having a wii and Xbox360 as a kid, and my uncle immediately modding it and putting my most wanted games on bootleg discs. Blew my mind at that age. After that my only experience with that kinda stuff was emulating on pc/mobile, until I hacked my switch for the first time in 2021. Kinda funny that that was my first because it’s one of the least user friendly in terms of setup and maintenance 😭
Since then I’ve modded my ps vita and my new Kingdom Hearts PSP from Japan. I have ps3 next on my list and eventually I want to get all of the kingdom hearts special edition consoles (PSP, DSi, 3DS, PS4) and add cfw to all of them to complete my collection

9:00 While it's correct you need FAT32 storage for these older consoles, keep in mind that you can format large SD cards and USB sticks to be FAT32!! I have a 128GB SD card in my 3DS, and because I formatted it correctly, it runs perfectly :)

Using USB to load ISO's on a PS2 is probably the... well, let's say "least good" method. PS2 USB protocols are old and slow compared to modern USB, so loading is equally slow, and that's also why you get into issues.
I recommend looking into the MX4SIO, which is a memory card that takes an SD or Micro SD, and with the appropriate version of FreeMcBoot can load ISO's from your now fancy and MUCH expanded memory card (yes, memory card access speeds are FASTER than the PS2's outdated USB).
Even better, if you have a Fat PS2, get a SATA Drive adapter (which slots into the rear network adapter port), which allows you to use a literal SATA hard drive on the PS2. Again, there's a relatively slow limit to what speeds it loads to, so you CAN use SSD's, but you'll be nowhere near reaching SSD speed capabilities (they're probably more stable than mechanical HDD's, though, so there's that).

    • @AxleBeast
      @AxleBeast  8 місяців тому +1

All of my modding has been on a tight budget so thats the only reason I went with the USB method. I would like to get an ssd and sata adapter for it in the future. I actually don’t know much about using SDs in the PS2 so I appreciate your knowledge on that!

My first modded console was my “new” 3DS XL and yeah, it’s surprisingly straightforward and simple. I knew nothing about modding going into it, and it was still completely understandable for me. best decision ever, it has over 400 games now and can do so much more. It’s insane and I use it far more than I ever had before. I also did my Wii U/vWii which I found significantly more difficult and temperamental. I’m still struggling to get WiiWare games to work and finish everything I wanted to with it. so uh yeah, 3DS is a walk in the park, but be ready for the Wii U to be tougher lol. My only issues with the 3DS is some GB and DS games being weird sometimes and requiring changing some settings in TM++ and the fact that it takes a year to boot up with my 256gb sd card haha but that’s just how it is

    • @jimjilliker2890

This may certainly not be your answer but on my Wii, I’ve learned that I can install my Wad with a mod manager on the main screen and then in Data management, I move the game ‘to Sd card’ and it appears on the sd card menu. The game works half the time and fails to launch the other half. I delete off sd card the ones that don’t launch. I then compile a separate sd card menu just for Wii Ware. VWii as you know needs VWii Wads, so I’ve never tried this process yet on my VWii Wii U. In the past, I created an Emunand on USB loader GX for Wii Ware and messed things up somehow. I like the sd card menu better.

modding a switch doesnt get you banned as the nodded part is basically all on the SD card so the base system and its internal storage is not touched at all so following the guides to block Nintendo's servers (or just running in airplane mode) guarantees not getting banned
