    When I was a kid my dad installed a mod chip and he just never told us. My mom would take me to our local blockbuster type store to rent games. My dad would copy them and we would return the originals the next day. I never understood why my games wouldn't work on friend's systems until like over a decade later when he finally told me. He accidentally made a nice memory into a cool story lol.

    In case anyone missed it, a similar swap trick was found in 'Alien: Resurrection' recently that doesn't require any mem card code, or mod chips. Just a small in-game cheat code the devs added for early testing and never removed and didn't report to sony.

    For anyone with a Playstation with an I/O port on the back, getting a Gameshark and softmodding it provides a much simpler and smoother experience for playing backup games. If you have that option, you should go the Gameshark route over this method. For anyone whose Playstation does not have an I/O port, this is is a gamechanger.

    • @chriswalls5648

      I knew I played backups on my ps1 but I wasn't sure of the memory. All I remembered was spoofing the console into thinking the door was closed. And then your post reminded me of the device in the back.

    • @Moved2Rumble
      @Moved2Rumble 3 роки тому +8

      You don't even need the I/O port, just the Gameshark CD and you can do this. Also "Mistakes were made" in this video as the Gameshark method works on the ps1 slim. As shown in a video on UA-cam. It also does NOT work on ALL models of the PS1, such as NTSC-U PlayStation 1 SCPH-1000 consoles (BIOS predates the introduction of the CD unlock command).

    This gives hope of having a softmod that does not require swapping disks at all in the future. I've installed mod chips in a few PS1's, and it was very straightforward. Yes, you're taking a chance of messing it up, but in my opinion the risk is pretty low.
    I remember installing a mod chip in my first PS2 - that was a bit more complex, and I was very happy when the softmod came out. I don't think I'd be willing to install a mod chip in someone else's PS2.

    Nice, cool to see that things are still happening on the PS1 front when it comes to backup solutions.
    Back in the day, I used the Action Replay on a regular PS1 with the slot on the backside to do this.
    Just put in a regular game, boot the console and just listen to the laser, when it stops working you can open the lid and remove the original game. Then insert a backup/import, and use the Action Replay menu to start it up. Worked like a charm

    • @lucario4483
      @lucario4483 3 роки тому +35

      Same here, but my guess (since I don't have ways to test/prove it) is that they will.
      One of the checks has to do with asking the CD drive to re-read the wobble groove at the current disc location. Here's where non-stealthy modchips are detected because these re-reads must not return the region string ("SCEx") required to authenticate the booting of a CD.
      So here I think it will obviously always pass since there's no modchip in the first place, unless it somehow detects the disabled authentication check of the CD drive.
      However, another check calculates a checksum of a part of the game's code, whose expected result is stored in the CD's subchannel. Here's where cracking attempts are detected (until this check also gets bypassed of course).
      So here I believe it depends on also having copied the subchannel data on the "backup" CD.
      If there are more check methods then I'm not completely sure, otherwise it boils down to how the game handles authentication disabling and if the subchannel is also copied.

    • @lucario4483
      @lucario4483 3 роки тому +10

      TLDR: unless there are check methods that I don't know, my guess is that it boils down to how the game handles authentication disabling (on the CD drive) and if the CD's subchannel is also copied.

      @johnsimon8457 3 роки тому +7

      When I had a modded Ps1, CD-Rs never worked as well as well as commercial discs. I suppose there’s a way to detect that, but there is always a risk of false alarms especially if the disc is dirty; calling your legit customers pirates is Bad.

    • @fake12396
      @fake12396 3 роки тому +8

      if it's an accurate rip, then i think they wouldn't. as far as i'm aware spyro has libcrypt + it's famous custom protection, but the protection only kicks in if the game is modified, so if you have a untouched good CCD or other accurate format dump and can burn it properly then you should be good.

    • @lucario4483
      @lucario4483 3 роки тому +3

      @@fake12396 correct, that's the checksum part i was talking about (but didn't remembered such technique had a name).
      So if the burner or ripper ignores the subchannel (since in most applications is only used for error detection of its corresponding "sector"), then such check also happens to detect burned CDs even with a modchip installed on the console 🤯.
      This is most likely the cause of John Simon's issue.

    I mentioned this earlier, but I had a disc version of Action Replay for the PSX (fat) that is suspiciously reminiscent of this. I used it around 1996 or 97. I didn't use it for loading burned games, but for breaking the region lock so I could play imported games from Japan. It came with a spring that would always hold down the disc tray button even when opened. You would boot up the Action Replay disc, you could write stuff to the memory card, then when you were ready, you'd select the game you wanted to play and its settings (like translations and cheats), it would tell you when to swap the disc, and then it would load the import, bypassing the initial PS boot screen. I played Tobal 2 and DBZ: Ultimate Battle 22 this way! I wonder if it's similar in how it works, cuz it sure sounds like it.

    This reminds me a lot of how homebrew started on the 3DS. Hackers basically found a shitty 1 dollar game on the eshop with an exploit similar to this, and they used it to run custom code.

      And that game shot up to #1 on the eShop when this was discovered I think

    I recall UK gaming mags having free printed little tips and ticks books...they had one with the disc swap and bluetac method...it was featured on the book covers as a selling point of the mag...it totally worked...best felling ever playing a ripped king of fighters 99 import disc using the swap method...felt like magic.

    Just checked on Ebay and already copies of the game seem to have gone up in price!

      Reminds me when the Wii U first came out and people could still use the Smash Bros. Stack on it *"vWii"* so when I tried to buy Smash Bros. Brawl it went up in price.. so when people find an exploit that has something to do with a game you will see a spike in prices...
