I have had this for a few months now (had this on pre-order for over a year) and I absolutely love this device. Able to play all games without having to use a disc on original hardware is magical. The installation of the PSIO is actually really easy for someone who has a basic level of soldering experience. I believe that you can now get these within a month of preordering. $149 for this is really cheap.
Back in those days i used a device like that one called "game shark" needed no soldering or extra chip. Originally was used to cheat with game codes, but as a plus, you could play burned cds, loading first any original one.
They spent years developing this and when they release it they make you mod the console. It's just a shame because GDEMU has put out SD cards for the Dreamcast & the Saturn and more and all you have to do is remove the optical drive and then plug the unit in and it works. No modding is needed, which is a much bigger selling point. They need to revise this so that the detection works through the serial port alone and no modding is needed. I would rather the CD drive just stopped working when the unit was plugged in and it overrode the CD drive. Sadly it a big NO from me.
Quite strange it needs a mod, the PIO slot at the back is ran so early in the Sony BIOS that you have the chance to patch everything in software. Action Replay/etc worked like that.
@@Whenitraveltheworld ehh it has been selling out quickly despite requiring solder work. I missed out on the pre-orders 2 times before I finally was able to place an order as they just sent an email out of the blue and it was first order first served basis. Cybdyn offer a mod service where you send in your PSX motherboard and they install the switch board for you. Not that it is hard. You just need a basic solder iron with a thin tip and some patience. Instructions are clear. They are working on a way to avoid the switch board but that takes time developing.
It's no different from a mod chip install 20 + years ago. The trace cut are only the most tedious ones of the install but if you have the right tools it's fine. I had zero soldering experience and did my PU-8 board fine. A plug n play solution without a board install will never happen because SONY did not have direct access to the CD-ROM controller and that is why the board is needed to re-route the communication from the Parallel Port to the CD drive, hence why a bad install, the console won't boot or the CD-ROM will not be recognised when PSIO is plugged in because PSIO still works side by side the drive.
$150? LMAO!!!! PSTV is way cheaper then that and fully hackable and you could run thousands more titles from different gens. I have one with a 264gb usb drive
150 AUS, which is about 110 USD. But yes the soldering is a bummer, but as always with disc based consoles, getting a "flash cart" for them is never as easy as on the cartridge consoles.

I'm a member of a Dreamcast group on Facebook, and I've seen people posting pictures for something similar for the Dreamcast! It is a more extensive modification, though, as it involves removing the disk reader and replacing it with an SD card reader, which is kind of a bummer. It's cool that this one for the PlayStation allows you to retain the optical drive, but I wonder as our disk based games age and begin to fail more frequently, if we'll see more solutions like the Dreamcast one that just get rid of optics all together in favor of something like an SD card reader.

OMG... Philosoma! I loved that game so much and I still have my original copy in the case and booklet (still like new). I think it took me a few days worth of playing to kind of get used to how that game worked and to work out the patterns but I remember beating it and overall it's just a cool game with an interesting story. It was one of the first games that ever came out with the launch of Playstation. Only know that because I bought it on or very near launch day along with the Playstation. Philosoma, Kileak the DNA Imperative, Tekken 2 and Resident Evil... and of course the obligatory Ridge Racer were the first games I bought with the Playstation. I am actually super interested in getting one of the PSIO devices - it would be so cool to go back and play Twisted Metal without the weird and long loading problems for the levels (as an example)! Come to think of it... if loading was quick for all of those games - it might make some of them many times more fun to go back and experience them again.
I've had a PSIO for a couple of years now and I'm really happy about it. I love the PS1 and my collection is 99% PAL games. This lets me play them NTSC. The true PlayStation classic.
Am I the only one who saw the title and thought this would be a way of storing your old saved games on an SD card and having the ability to backup those saves through an SD card reader on your PC? But instead turned out to be an alternative way of playing games without the disc whilst running on the original console hardware, still pretty cool though!
Got one of these about a 2 years ago for my ps1. Not hard at all to solder in the chip. I’m no pro at soldering but i found it pretty simple. Also have a gdemu for my Dreamcast and a rhea for my sega Saturn. These devices are great to preserve your collection and come with other benefits such as faster load times. Best of all this device trounces the ps1 classic.

if you have earlier slim models of ps3, it'll be easy for you. tons of soft mod vids out there that would enable you to hack ps3 to play ps1 and 2 games. I run ps2 iso on my ps3 and use raspberry pi 3b+ for my retro games (ps1, snes, gba etc)
I really appreciate you took the time to add the titles of the games. It's really helpful to keep track of those games!

I literally was doing some google searching about PSIOs the other day. MJR you never fail to help me out
They actually already have them for the Gamecube, Saturn, Dreamcast.
Check out Adam Koralik video about the GD-rom replacement on the Dreamcast.
My life in Gaming guys did a great review of the 2 version of the Saturn SD sub.
Everdrive has a patch for Sega CD games I believe.
Gamecube SD media launcher is great
PS2 you can use a Sata to IDE adapter with a hard drive or IDE to SD or IDE to Compact Flash.
XBOX same option as PS2 but remember to format the drive with FAT32 in 2TB partitions.
Amiga CD32 can use the Amiga 500 sd card reader.
3DO Nothing That I know yet
CD-I nothing yet
Atari Jaguar with in the process and testing.
MJR!
I still am trying to find NAS storage access for my consoles.
There's a 3DO ODE out there for the various models, search for 3do-renovation (Russian site) for info. It can load games from a USB drive.
For the Amiga CD32, there is the Terrible Fire TF328, you should check the channel of Dan Wood, he made a video about it. You transform with this, your CD32, into the ultimate amiga machine.
@Brandon The is a mod board for the PS2 Network adapter that changes the IDE plug for SATA. It works with the original Network Adapter and you keep the LAN support.
@@ichigo3223 I have one, it's only around 8 UK pounds and comes from China but works perfectly! You have to use it with the official network adaptor though, it is my belief that it isn't compatible with the unofficial 3rd party ones!
lol yeah i was thinking the same thing >__<
from memory you have to patch the ps2 isos to run of the hdd or usb but yeah ps2, xbox and above are pretty easy to get software ODEs working. Webman for the ps3 one is my favorite
I've been using this device for several months. This is totally awesome!!!
Even though we know the result, it would be beneficial to have a side by side loading comparison.
These things could've been pretty handy if they had come out like 20+ years ago...
@@SerBallister Exactly, this is why its not sold out instantly, if this was the case, these things would be impossible to obtain for a while.
That's a very elaborate way to tell us you have 0 soldering skills and are angry about it.
I just found your channel recently. Great videos dude, I'll be watching for new ones while I binge watch your old ones.
150 bucks + soldering labor is way too much imo.
$150? LMAO!!!! PSTV is way cheaper then that and fully hackable and you could run thousands more titles from different gens. I have one with a 264gb usb drive
150 AUS, which is about 110 USD. But yes the soldering is a bummer, but as always with disc based consoles, getting a "flash cart" for them is never as easy as on the cartridge consoles.
you should learn how to solder, is really easy and helpful.
i fixed my ps2 by myself three times.
This gadget is awesome and is an amazing way to back up my collection
I dont get the price. Moding a ps1 was dirt cheap.

For Saturn there is Rhea/Phoebe

Definitive way to play PS1 games, nothing else comes close.
Have a 256GB card, running this on a JVC CRT 27" TV through RGB SCART and it's absolutely awesome.
PS1 is one of those systems you really need to play on original hardware - no emulation can ever compare.
The new menu updates are super easy to use as well, from what they've said in their news segment it's now at almost 100% compatibility, apparently only a single game is left before it's 100%.
149.95 AUD for the cartridge and an additional 7.95 AUD for the chip......eh nice concept, but too expensive for my blood.

@@the1ucidone I actually find it kind of expensive too, I would love this hardware, I have a job, but In my case it's something called "priorities". But for now a self programmed and installed MayumiV4 does the job.

Thanks for letting us know about this! Best news ever!
This looks awesome!!! There are some really great games on the PS1 that you just can't find anymore. Or they are so ridiculously expensive they are not feasible. What a time to be alive!!!
I need this in my life. I also just picked up a ps1 7501 3 weeks ago for free, so this is exciting to find out.
Great review MJR. Thank you so much.
Who would dare to skip the PlayStation logo with that amazing startup jingle?!?

Great to see you back. Hope you can fix your basement. This also made me aware of it and I’m having my house checked out by professionals.
This is awesome. I love how you can still use the original hardware and that the only thing emulated is the disc processor. I was thinking to put together a raspberry pi box but this sounds even better.. for playing just ps1 games at least
I noticed that they offer the board seperately so you can mod all your PS1's and then just move the ps-io to the one you want to use. Not sure why you would want to, but the option is there.
No one gonna bring up that MJ placed a Xenogears CD? Great hidden gem
Thanks for showing this. Think I'll need to pick one up now
OMG...
