Same Here. My original PS console no longer reads disks. Here in Australia this PSIO mod cost exactly the same as the PS Classic. Looking forward to seeing more PlayStation 1 content on your channel. With kind regards, from Cybdyn Systems.
I'm a grandmother trying to resurrect my consoles and what's left of my games for grandtwins. I'm researching "mods" so I can copy games I have and soon to start buying. So how do I get the games to an SD card? Is that done on a PC first, then SD in cartridge in parallel port? Sorry if I sound dumb, trying to learn.
@@nanais007 Hi. No problem at all. Yes, it's done on your PC first. Don't forget however, you'll need to install the Switch Board on your PlayStation mainboard prior to this. Thanks.

I have PS1,PS2 and PS3 and the best solution in my opinion for PS1 games is with the retrocompatibility on PS3 with CFW. With that you can play the PS1 games using HDMI and load the games from the HD.
@@themcfaceman With CFW you can install or use whatever you want in your console without restrictions like : emulators, media player, backups from HD, create backups of your games from console, use of Other OS to install Linux, use of control fan with software to reduce temps to avoid YLOD, you can see the temps of your console, use of file manager to copy anything you want or read from your console without restrictions, the use of multiple APPS from thirds like Multiman, Iris Manager, Managunz, etc, etc.
if you have earlier slim models of ps3, it'll be easy for you. tons of soft mod vids out there that would enable you to hack ps3 to play ps1 and 2 games. I run ps2 iso on my ps3 and use raspberry pi 3b+ for my retro games (ps1, snes, gba etc)
They spent years developing this and when they release it they make you mod the console. It's just a shame because GDEMU has put out SD cards for the Dreamcast & the Saturn and more and all you have to do is remove the optical drive and then plug the unit in and it works. No modding is needed, which is a much bigger selling point. They need to revise this so that the detection works through the serial port alone and no modding is needed. I would rather the CD drive just stopped working when the unit was plugged in and it overrode the CD drive. Sadly it a big NO from me.
Quite strange it needs a mod, the PIO slot at the back is ran so early in the Sony BIOS that you have the chance to patch everything in software. Action Replay/etc worked like that.
@@Whenitraveltheworld ehh it has been selling out quickly despite requiring solder work. I missed out on the pre-orders 2 times before I finally was able to place an order as they just sent an email out of the blue and it was first order first served basis. Cybdyn offer a mod service where you send in your PSX motherboard and they install the switch board for you. Not that it is hard. You just need a basic solder iron with a thin tip and some patience. Instructions are clear. They are working on a way to avoid the switch board but that takes time developing.
It's no different from a mod chip install 20 + years ago. The trace cut are only the most tedious ones of the install but if you have the right tools it's fine. I had zero soldering experience and did my PU-8 board fine. A plug n play solution without a board install will never happen because SONY did not have direct access to the CD-ROM controller and that is why the board is needed to re-route the communication from the Parallel Port to the CD drive, hence why a bad install, the console won't boot or the CD-ROM will not be recognised when PSIO is plugged in because PSIO still works side by side the drive.
Definitive way to play PS1 games, nothing else comes close. Have a 256GB card, running this on a JVC CRT 27" TV through RGB SCART and it's absolutely awesome. PS1 is one of those systems you really need to play on original hardware - no emulation can ever compare. The new menu updates are super easy to use as well, from what they've said in their news segment it's now at almost 100% compatibility, apparently only a single game is left before it's 100%.
Thanks for telling us about this HOWEVER we don’t need to see you playing the games, we need to see you loading them from the menu so we can see the speed of loading! Amateur mistake MJR.
I have owned a PSIO for 3 years and It's a ODE which emulates the physical drive, so in turn won't magically make things any faster. Only slight differences to increased speed is noticeable but then that is also dependent on SD card specs too and firmware.
I would recommend Voultar for adding this mod in the US. He is very professional and does great work. He also has videos showing how to do these mods if you want to see the quality of his work. He also fixes and mods just about every old school system and games out there. voultar.com/

For a console that already has so many exploits, I don't see why people are continuing to work with it despite other consoles, like the Sega Saturn, needing this more by a long-shot. Sure, it's cool and I don't think it should never exist, but there are already countless solutions for backing up and playing PS1 games. Virtually nothing for the Saturn.

I'm a member of a Dreamcast group on Facebook, and I've seen people posting pictures for something similar for the Dreamcast! It is a more extensive modification, though, as it involves removing the disk reader and replacing it with an SD card reader, which is kind of a bummer. It's cool that this one for the PlayStation allows you to retain the optical drive, but I wonder as our disk based games age and begin to fail more frequently, if we'll see more solutions like the Dreamcast one that just get rid of optics all together in favor of something like an SD card reader.
Hi MJR! There are already Everdrive style solutions for some other disc based systems you should check out. For Dreamcast there is GDEmu For Saturn there is Rhea/Phoebe Both are pricey and hard to get, but I'm sure you could get a hold of them for testing and they'd be great subjects for future videos. I know this is a little late but the region lock is on the drive itself not on the motherboard so the psio unit obviously is region free so it can play any region where is the stock disk drive cannot.
Hey MJR, Cool vid. One question that I have though. Can you rip your games to the SD card from the discs that you own or do you need to add the ISO files to the SD card using your computer? Cheers man!
@MetalJesusRocks Optical drive emulation is a thing on Saturn and Dreamcast, for the Saturn there is the Rhea and Phoebe, both are optical drive replacements, and for the Dreamcast, there is the GDEMU, also an optical drive replacement.
yup. most retro computers and consoles are already emulated on modern PCs so just for running the software there are easier/cheaper ways. this is an enthusiast product and produced in fairly low numbers so going to be expensive to some, but actually very fairly priced to others.
I noticed that they offer the board seperately so you can mod all your PS1's and then just move the ps-io to the one you want to use. Not sure why you would want to, but the option is there.

Gotta say at 1st I saw this and was like "Why bother with getting that, if you have to mod the console to begin with, it will already run CD-Rs and your backups along it" (or pirates, you know yourself), but then I saw it does give some extra convenience. Frankly, I think it's a tad too specific, like it needs to be the old model and with parallel port plus you'll have to mod it, but I can understand it if you really don't want to swap discs. In other hand tho, given the PS1 has no remote power on, you'll still have to reach it to turn on and off to begin with, unless you add another external device that cuts it's power from the outlet for you. I would definitely love this for a PS2, specially the newest slim ones (79xxx and 90xxx versions) that have the smaller and more power efficient motherboards, that would be killer for a PS2 portable. And like you said, it's good if it comes for pretty much all disk based system, just like the flashcarts come for cartridge based ones, since you have the hardware to care about. Disc drives are dying, and one day spare parts will run out, hopefully not (as in, you could still get compatible replacements) but it can happen. Not just possibly but even probably, and then the only hope to use the original hardware will be something like this.

I'd be interested in this, very much so, however, does the chip react with anything else that might be plugged into the parallel port? I'm thinking Xplorer/Xploder cheat cartridges (or GameShark for you stateside guys), and stuff like that? Also, what if you already have a chipped console? Would that interfere in any way? :)
BTW mjr the Dreamcast already has a couple of solutions like this. I have the SD card adapter for the Dreamcast. The downside is it is actually SLOWER at reading stuff than the disc drive is since it is a serial port that it works through, but it works great with games that aren't fmv heavy and such or modified ISOs.
If you don’t add the switcher chip to the PS motherboard, does that just keep the CDROM drive from working or does it keep the system from reading the PSIO? Was thinking about adding one of these to a PS1 with a broken CD drive if I didn’t have to solder the chip to the PS MB.
Would love to have one, but soldering isn't my thing. And since the unit itself is already expensive, paying someone to solder my PS1 would make this even more expensive. Using homebrew for PS2 is much, much easier.
Gunner's Heaven was a launch title in the UK renamed Rapid Reload. Wasn't it released in the US? I'm definitely going to get a psio. To have my entire CD games library untouched would be awesome.
I would not say that HDMI looks great but I do appreciate you showing this off. One guys opinion that it could look better but from PS1 it doesn't look worse so I guess that's something. I'll see what it's like on the XRGB Mini
You can learn almost anything online now making going to college almost obsolete, so i guarantee you can learn basic soldering skills online after all practice makes perfection.
A butane soldering iron?! sigh.. Glad it worked out. Next time you need surface mount soldering like this, hit me up. I'm in Monroe. I have real soldering equipment.
There needs to be a solution for the later PS1's that omitted the Parallel port, from my experience they are more common in Europe than the original models

The SD2SNES for example allows for selecting what region you want the games to play as, meaning you can choose between PAL (50Hz) and NTSC (60Hz).
I don't know if PSIO suppots such an option yet, but I doubt they wouldn't include this option later on, if the device doesn't do so already.
Since PSIO can be updated via firmware updates, compatibility with games can also be improved, and new features can likely be added, too.
Currently, there are only like 2-3 games that are unplayable/freeze, with a handful of other games having minor issues.
Other than that, every game runs perfectly fine.
www.cybdyn-systems.com.au:82/issues/?filter=-5
I swear, people need to do their homework
So much misinformation and entitled pricks spouting nonsense online...
Edit: Yes, you can switch video modes, so switching from PAL output to NTSC input and vice versa is a thing.
Definitely recommend buying a PSIO.
And if you are not good at soldering (like me), the developers of the device offer to install it for you.
Just buy the device, the switch board kit and the mainboard modification service and you should be good.
If all that is worth your money, that's up to you, but looking at what you get for the bang of your buck, it's definitely worth it.

This is awesome. You don't have to worry about your laser dying, nor disk rot getting to your games with thing, but still get 100% authentic experience.
Rathori Khass If you like to play discs, it’s kind of a bummer.
@@RichLunaMusic
Urgh, why would you want to play discs when they can skip and take longer to load?. Surprised you didn't mention "piracy" lol
Rich Luna you can still play discs, it won’t affect the drive at all
@@RichLunaMusic you can still use your discs. What I like here is you can use a digital ROM file without using an emulator. Game still plays and acts 100% because its, well, actually running on a ps1. The disc drives almost always are the weakest part in older consoles, so being able to still play the games without wearing out the disc drive (or of your disc drive is already broken) is awesome.
0/10 not enough skipping
Just kidding it'll be great to finally get some use out of my PS1 with a hardly working laser
I have an old PS1 with a dead CD drive, this would be a great way to bring it back to (extra) life.
thats my plan too since i dont want to throw my old ps1
Adam Christensen , same thing with me, it will be nice little project
Same Here. My original PS console no longer reads disks. Here in Australia this PSIO mod cost exactly the same as the PS Classic. Cartridge remods me of the PS Hacker one with built in Action Replay cheat codes. I used to mod the original console so it became multi region and use the disc swap method to play backup cd-r games.
Y'all could also buy an aftermarket lens for about $10.
Of course, go to ebay and have fun, better than paying 106 dollars for this crap and fuck the ps1 board. If you want free games install mm3 chip, costs 10 bucks. or... a better way, use epsxe emulator with roms ez pz.
Excellent review MJR! It's great to hear that you'll be using your PSIO Cartridge to enjoy your PlayStation 1 games the way they were meant to be played. Overall, this is what our goal was, and from your review, I believe we have met and further exceeded that expectation. We wanted to create a product which was well polished and used the original hardware the way the PlayStation 1 games were meant and designed to be played. Looking forward to seeing more PlayStation 1 content on your channel. With kind regards, from Cybdyn Systems.
Maybe you should correct his false assumption : «emulating the CD-Rom coprocessor». Yeah, not at all....
Once you've copied your games (and the Menu System), you then insert the SD Card into our PSIO Cartridge and plug the cartridge into your PlayStation console in the Parallel I/O port. Don't forget however, you'll need to install the Switch Board on your PlayStation mainboard prior to this. Thanks.

Seriously, I feel like picking up a real PS1 now just for this

I have PS1,PS2 and PS3 and the best solution in my opinion for PS1 games is with the retrocompatibility on PS3 with CFW. With that you can play the PS1 games using HDMI and load the games from the HD.

Even though we know the result, it would be beneficial to have a side by side loading comparison.
@@SerBallister Exactly, this is why its not sold out instantly, if this was the case, these things would be impossible to obtain for a while.
That's a very elaborate way to tell us you have 0 soldering skills and are angry about it.

Great idea but the price is prohibitive. Too many cheaper alternatives. Only those who just have to play on original hardware would be interested.
yup. most retro computers and consoles are already emulated on modern PCs so just for running the software there are easier/cheaper ways. this is an enthusiast product and produced in fairly low numbers so going to be expensive to some, but actually very fairly priced to others.

Very cool, Jesus. The perfect antidote to the PlayStation Classic.
Don't forget Everdrive 64 !

Great to see you back. Hope you can fix your basement. This also made me aware of it and I’m having my house checked out by professionals.
If anyone is selling already modified versions of the PS1 Console, I would be happy to make a purchase.
