GCU holds a seminar on restorative justice in collaboration with PP&PS

  • LAHORE: The Government College University, Lahore, in collaboration with the Punjab Probation and Parole Service (PP&PS), hosted a seminar titled "Restorative Justice: Probation & Parole - Living Again in Communities." to highlight the importance of restorative justice and the role of probation and parole services in reintegrating individuals into society.
    In their address, the speakers shared their visions for a more inclusive and supportive community for individuals on probation and parole.
    "There is no one like the person who rises after a fall,” said Dr. Amjad Saqib, the Chairperson of Akhuwat Foundation. He also discussed the role of non-governmental organizations in restorative justice. He emphasized that societies are built on love, not hatred, and stressed the importance of guiding individuals with compassion. Dr. Saqib shared that Akhuwat Foundation has provided interest-free loans to 4 million households, illustrating the power of support and kindness in transforming lives.
    Prof. Dr. Shazia Bashir, the first woman Vice Chancellor of GCU, discussed the significance of educational institutions in restorative justice. She emphasized the importance of love and sacrifice, drawing inspiration from the life of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as a role model. She believed that “the Almighty Allah’s true lover is the one who loves His creation.” She advocated that forgiveness and compassion towards those who realize their mistakes.
    Mr. Muhammad Shahid Iqbal, the Director General of PP&PS, provided an overview of the current state of probation and parole services in Punjab. He highlighted the success of GCU in nurturing students and announced that probation and parole services would now offer six-month internships for students. He explained that individuals involved in minor crimes, serving sentences from one to three years, are sent to PP&PS for rehabilitation. Mr. Iqbal emphasized the goal of training individuals involved in temporary crimes and reintegrating them into society.
    Prof. Dr. Syeda Salma Hassan, the Chairperson of the Department of Psychology at GCU, discussed the psychological aspects of reintegration. She announced that PP&PS would provide internship opportunities for students and emphasized the need to raise awareness among students about probation and parole services. Dr. Hassan mentioned that a recent agreement between GCU and PP&PS aims to enhance collaborative efforts in this field.
