I have an original 1948 packard (same model). It's incredibly reliable, comfortable, and easy to drive. So much so I often use it as a daily driver. The only real downside is the serious lack of fuel economy.
I love the design of this car. Wish that I had the money to buy it.

I'd leave the dash disconnected if you are going to run 12 volts. Then the new owner can either convert the dash or go back to 12 volts. I saw a kit that converts one of those alternators to 6 volts negative and another by the same company that converts it to 6 volts positive ground. I'm curious about the melted wiring. I thought the wires would be fabric covered, not plastic covered.
