Do you ever use a melted paraffin seal for jam? My grandmother used to do that. She'd pour about 3/16" to 1/4" of melted paraffin on top and the first person to use it would break the seal.
When I was in my last trimester of my pregnancy with my daughter, my Dad took me to one of my favorite restaurants as a child for lunch. When we got there he talked me into having a Monte Cristo sandwich, IT WAS AWESOME AND I WAS TOTALLY SURPRISED! I haven't had one since, but I'm DEFINITELY going to be making one soon. Thank you for reminding me how yummy that sandwich is/was!❤❤
In the Southern US the sandwich can be found deep fried at a lot of "homestyle" or comfort food restaurants, it's usually dusted with powdered sugar with a die of strawberry or raspberry jam to dip it into
Fried monte cristos are my favorite sandwich. We had them 20+ years ago at a truck stop I worked at. We also have them at the diner my husband works at now. Soooooooo yum!
I have cherished memories of the summer my mom and grandma canned like crazy. Tomatoes, dill pickles, dilly beans, raspberry and strawberry freezer jams, everything came from our garden and I helped harvest it all. I need to do the same thing with my daughter and mom, so the family recipes are passed down.
Haha, I love that you mentioned Alton Brown. You've always reminded me a lot of him in the way that you're both entertaining and also educational to watch :)
Reminds me just a tiny bit of a leftover thanksgiving sandwich my mom would make us as kids - turkey, stuffing, gravy, potatoes, cranberry sauce and CHEESE all on a hot grilled sandwich. Yum

My introduction to the Monte Cristo was about 30 years ago in NYC. We were there for a family event and had been booked into a motel in a rather "interesting" area on the outskirts of the city. The kitchen was closed for renovations but the staff directed us to a diner about 10 minutes up the road and suggested we try the Monte Cristo sandwich. Except for breakfast and the reception we attended, that was pretty much my entire diet for the 2 days we were there. The only difference is that I'm used to seeing them with seedless raspberry or blackberry jam... Gonna have to try strawberry now! (And now that I've watched this video, I'm REALLY tempted to try making my own strawberry jam.) Thanks, Emmy! :-)
@@holagataeang I mean, I live in a country where 90% of the restaurants make carbonara with cream and never eggs or parmesan. So you know how that goes 😆 But I tried Monte Cristo, and it's WONDERFUL.
Hey Emmy, love your videos! I have a small request if you wouldn't mind: my mother-in-law loves your videos, but she's terribly hard of hearing (but don't tell her that!) English isn't her first language and she understands much more spoken than she does written. Is there any way you could up the volume just a smidge in your videos? If not, no worries! And thank you for sharing your content all of these years ❤️
I love freezer jam. My mother and I make it each year and it's such a treat. I like to freeze it and eat a spoonful once in a while to cure a sweet tooth. 💕
Every time I want a Monte Cristo I am sad and reminded that Bennigan's is no more and I can't get my sandwich because everyone else makes it like french toast and I liked the Bennigan's version better.
Love the strawberry freezer jam. My mom makes the same freezer jam recipe but she makes a batch with MPC pectin by sure jell. It comes out more like a syrup to use on ice cream, in her baked cakes, or in whipped cream that is spread on a cake like frosting. My mom also uses the sure jell pectin for her freezer jam that goes on bread and toast.
I love monte cristo sandwiches! I work in restaurants and frequently ask my cooks to make them even though they are off the menu! I usually dip mine in syrup and sometimes add bacon! Delicious 😋
Preserves, or at least the way my grandmother makes them are just the whole fruit cooked with sugar. The juice will come out of the fruit and make a syrup. That’s pretty much it.
I grew up in central Florida and any Monte Cristos from anywhere were the deep fried kind. I didn't know that wasn't the traditional way until I moved to the Northeast. When I was in culinary class we used to make them as part of our lunch menu, but we made them like french toast first and then deep fried them, and added heavy powdered sugar. They were wildly popular and very tasty.
Me: Is vegan and hates strawberry jam but watches the video anyways cause Emmy's adorable. Also me: Trying to veganize it in my head cause I want to try it. 💛
I make freezer jams almost every year (blackberry, strawberry & raspberry), along with traditional cooked jams... I can be fickle and I love both styles! 💜
back when i was super poor in college, these things saved my life lol. so tasty, filling, quick, and cheap to make, there were many nights i wouldve gone to bed hungry if not for monte cristo sandwiches. that and egg drop soup
Strawberries are probably my favorite fruit I absolutely love them. My favorite time of the year is strawberry year. The contrasting sweet and salty cheese and ham... Lovely combo. This is definately a recipe I can get behind.
Monte Cristo sandwiches are wonderful. Ive only had the deep fried version dusted with powdered sugar with jam on the side. Had it decades ago waayyy back in high school and still remember it because it was so delicious. I also always add strawberry jam to my breakfast croissants/sandwiches from my local Jack in the Box so youve got the right idea! Now I'm hungry😊 "Bless you"

I've made Monte Cristo sandwiches with ham and cheese, I didn't know your supposed to add jam, and my grandma used to make strawberry freezer jam when I was a kid, strawberry jam has always been my favorite , I love your videos Emmy
My favourite food as a child. Warm, greasy, gooey from the cheese, and a bit salty from a thin slice of ham. It’s amazing. Usually pan fried and then dusted by icing sugar. Served with warm maple syrup. Perfect food for a kid!
Made many trips to Disneyland as a child and my mom ALWAYS got the monte cristo! Still haven't had it myself at Disney, but I've definitely made it at home, and couldn't agree more, such a delicious sandwich!
One of my grandmothers used to make something similar, but she used her homemade marmalade instead of jam. It made the sandwich taste like a glazed ham. The only way I liked marmalade. Not normally a fan, but the combo in this sandwich was awesome. She used Gruyere cheese and spicy mustard as well.
For many years jams and jellies were not canned in a water bath. When I was young many people sealed the jars with melted bees wax and stored on a shelf because few people had a refrigerator. I made freezer jam which was a new thing then and my children could eat a lot of it.
When ever emmy takes a bite of whatever shes made and she starts nodding and going " hmm hmm" just know shes about to lay down the most profound description of said item.

When we got there he talked me into having a Monte Cristo sandwich, IT WAS AWESOME AND I WAS TOTALLY SURPRISED! I haven't had one since, but I'm DEFINITELY going to be making one soon. Thank you for reminding me how yummy that sandwich is/was!❤❤
In the Southern US the sandwich can be found deep fried at a lot of "homestyle" or comfort food restaurants, it's usually dusted with powdered sugar with a die of strawberry or raspberry jam to dip it into
I've never seen the jam inside.
Fried monte cristos are my favorite sandwich. We had them 20+ years ago at a truck stop I worked at. We also have them at the diner my husband works at now. Soooooooo yum!
OMG this is one of my favorite things in the world. Benagin's made the best one ever! 😍 Great vid 👍👍 Emmy you make me smile 😊
Yum
Hi Emmy, it looks nicely cooked, I can tell you its not for me, never been a fan of sweet things with savoury, but mustard yummy, without the jam, yes please, strawberry jam, yes please, oh BLESS YOU🤧🤧🤧🤧, for your sneeze, great video, love your videos, sending the love from Melbourne Australia 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🦘🦘🦘🦘
I can't be the only one who knew Monte Cristo from The Sims 4.
I didn't know that, but I remember soursop from the Sims...2, I believe?
what are you guys talking about? I feel im missing something hahah because i play the sims all thr time
You've never heard of it before playing sims 4? 😵 If youve never eaten one in real life you've not lived! Lol
Lmfaooooo I thought it was only one
@@holagataeang I mean, I live in a country where 90% of the restaurants make carbonara with cream and never eggs or parmesan. So you know how that goes 😆 But I tried Monte Cristo, and it's WONDERFUL.
I LOVE strawberry freezer jam!! Best jam ever!
The best one i ever had was at bennigans. RiP bennigans
Same. I worked there once too
Oh wow, haven't thought of Bennigans in an age...
yes! loved bennigans.
Every time I want a Monte Cristo I am sad and reminded that Bennigan's is no more and I can't get my sandwich because everyone else makes it like french toast and I liked the Bennigan's version better.
Tracey Buckley omg it was to die for. Deeep frieddd
An excellent recipe! An excellent sandwich! I’m in. And you care for the edge to . Nice!
My husband makes these with leftover Christmas and Easter ham but instead of jam he uses the pineapple rings from the ham.
You could’ve used clarified butter - it has a higher smoke point.
Ahh-choo!
Bless you!
Thank you
* I read you comment, and sneezed. *
I cannot wait to try that jam recipe. Strawberry jam is my favorite as well and that looks really good.
Wait...people put Jam on their ham and cheeses?
0_O
Mari Dragneel yes, its tasty!
Eww right
Don't knock it til you try it! :)
Honestly it’s life changing.
Ohhhh yeah! So delicious
I am so happy you are a proponent for freezer jam! Its so much easier then canning
"...do you wanna watch me wash things?"
Yes. Yes I do.
My family has made jam just like this my entire life! I’ve actually never had store bought jam.
My family did the same for years.
love love LOVE those local new england strawberries. i use them for all sorts of recipes but have never tried making freezer jam before; i will now!
I try this recipe
back when i was super poor in college, these things saved my life lol. so tasty, filling, quick, and cheap to make, there were many nights i wouldve gone to bed hungry if not for monte cristo sandwiches. that and egg drop soup
Strawberries are probably my favorite fruit I absolutely love them. My favorite time of the year is strawberry year. The contrasting sweet and salty cheese and ham... Lovely combo. This is definately a recipe I can get behind.
People think I'm crazy because I like my dad's cream cheese, ketchup and jelly on toast sandwiches.
I'm open minded, I'll try this one!!!
where does the ketchup go? in the middle? i'm having a hard time imagining this
@@rachelmenth4677 Just one squirt of ketchup is enough, you just mix the cream cheese with the jelly of your liking.
@@kimberlys8422 ohhhhh i get it. thank you
Monte Cristo sandwiches are wonderful. Now I'm hungry😊 "Bless you"
Hiiiii Emmy! All the way from south Texas!
Hi, south Texas!
I never watch cooking videos but there is something about you in your cooking videos that i love to watch! I just cant out my finger on it! Your awesome! Thank you!
The way that you say "deep fried" tells a lot about you and your personality.....
Donut let her fool you. Emmy loves fried food.
@@sarabeth641 oh no... it was like a sexual thing when she said it 🤣
@@daddyosink4413 Just as I said ;) no I'm just playing. I actually saw it as disgust when she said it, so that's why I said what I did
I've made Monte Cristo sandwiches with ham and cheese, I didn't know your supposed to add jam, and my grandma used to make strawberry freezer jam when I was a kid, strawberry jam has always been my favorite , I love your videos Emmy
Two slices of ham on the entire sandwich?!?!? You must've worked at a Subway before lolol
It's a Monte Cristo, not a ham sandwich. It's an ingredient, there's also cheese and three slices of bread. Enough.
honestly the most calming youtuber EVER. whenever i feel stressed i know i can count on emmy 🙃🙃
"I've been known to eat strange things..." Whaaaaaat!?! Nooooooo lol (Me thinking back to bull testicles, Dirt Cookies, Dollar Tree meat, etc.)
Freezer Jam... so good! And makes me think of my grandmother... she makes some every year! So good
of course you're not supposed to wash your utensils, that's where the flavor comes from. It's called recycling food.
Love this. I’m for sure going to try making the jam and if it turns out well the sand which. Thanks Emmy!
I don’t even cook I just watch this because Emmy energy calms me down
