This is such a sad story. Thank you for sharing it. I didnt realize the majority of kamikaze pilots were young men drafted against their will. I c ant imagine going on a one way mission with no return.
there’s also a poem called “kamikaze” it talks about how the children of a kamikaze fighter were waiting for him to come back, and when he did he was ignored by his family and everyone in the community because that was supposed to be his last flight. Him not dying brought shame to him and his family. However his children still loved him
There was perfectly valid reasons for Kamikaze pilots to turn back. The misconception that they only had half a tank of fuel was a myth. They often couldn't find there targets if weather was bad. People who volunteered usually weren't cowards.
Japan: *makes their most skilled and gifted pilots commit suicide* Also japan: why did we lose? edit: woah didn't know the comments could recreate the pacific front so accurately
Commander: this will be your final mission you won’t be returning. It will bring your family honor! Pilot: will you be joining us? It will bring your family honor. Commander: uhh no but good luck!
The kamikaze made a weird sort of sense: Japan had a drastic shortage of trained pilots, and a lavish excess of airframes, so using those would-be pilots to guide missiles did make, as I said, a weird sort of sense.
Honor is a culturally specific thing. The Imperial era Japanese believed that surrender was dishonorable and that mercy was for the weak. That's why Allied POWs were treated so harshly, because they had surrendered or were captured alive rather than having fought to the death.
Wrong...Allies were treated harshly because of factual stories about what would happen to the Japanese if captured by the wicked pale-faced devil military...they knew about the internment camps in the USA.
My grandpa served in WW2 in the pacific, on the U.S.S. Hamlin. He said one time during an attack, a kamikaze zero plane flew like a foot over his head and missed his ship, crashing into the ocean. One of many close calls he had during the war. R.I.P.🙏❤️🇺🇸
Wow, kamikaze pilots were trying to maximize enemy (aka American) casualties while having the same number of casualties. Glad to hear that he somehow survived.
We actually had a really interesting poem about this in an English class of mine. A kamikaze pilot that returned was shunned from society, his own family ignoring his existence. It looked at the thought of what the better way of dying was, living as an invisible entity or literally dying.
When I took Kenpo Karate, the main instructor use to tell us about how his instructor was an Imperial Japanese Pilot who was chosen to be a Kamikaze Pilot. He never got his chance as he apparently was shot in the legs by the Americans as he tried to get into his plane.
@@applemauzel *Well, most Japanese militia in that time were not religious or atheist because they followed the bad guy with the square mustache who wanted all his allies to be secular states.*
Whenever I hear about the story of Kamikazes, my gut always wrenches with fear, and I think about what if I had been born in Japan during those times. I would have to literally die for the country, or else, I would be shamed for the rest of my life! I’d gladly sacrifice myself if I were a Japanese person who was drafted to be a Kamikaze, not in the fear of shame, but in the spirit of how I will bring glory to my family, and my country. Thinking about it in today’s scenario, if I had to sacrifice myself, in the hopes of the well-being of my country, I would gladly do so, and that is why I have the utmost respect for any country's military personnel, cuz they are literally giving up their lives to protect us, and if there was ever a situation where I am drafted, I would gladly accept my fate. May God bless the souls of real heroes, the military, the people who give up everything for our wellbeing, and Rest in Peace for the souls of Kamikaze warriors.
When you make max reliability interwar fighter variants in Hearts of Iron IV (the kamikazes would often return from their mission due to the way the reliability stat was handled)
They should make a movie about this dude. Trying to kamikaze 3 times and having divine intervention and being on a stranded island for 10 weeks. Thats crazy. Perfect formula for a movie especially knowing the aftermath
My great grandfather survived kamikaze twice. He flew twice but he returned both time because of the "divine wind". Then the war ended. My great aunt was very happy.
It would be better to live in the wilderness and not return even if it meant I might die on an island, because then my family could still live in honor and peace. But I know a lot about wilderness survival and I’m extremely independent, so I’d probably be fine on my own.

it talks about how the children of a kamikaze fighter were waiting for him to come back, and when he did he was ignored by his family and everyone in the community because that was supposed to be his last flight.

I would have accepted "so you have chosen death", but that works too.
