You just perfectly explained by i bought a 2WD Z71 Chevy Colorado and NOT the 4WD. The 4WD costs more and when things need to be replaced or worked on it costs FAR more on a 4WD.
If he were to look at a Toyota truck that's a perk of the 4WD models; the rear driveshaft will unbolt via flanges without having to disassemble u-joints, and the truck can temporarily be driven as a front wheel drive. Plus the 4WD trucks come with the greasable Spicer u-joints that last an extremely long time. Unfortunately the 2WD has the slip yoke in the transmission (so no flange) and non-greasable Spicer joints. That said, it would be nice to not carry around all the added drivetrain.

So, thank you, very much. Stay safe. Oh, and nice setup. Love the gear. I'm currently looking for a vehicle, was on the fence about a Rav4 and I think this clinches it.
Dang, seeing you two in a single video is like seeing the stars align. Can't wait to see what scenes you're gonna catch this year. As for the car, my experience is telling me that Scotty is right (as pretty much always). FWD cars are very forgiving on the rough terrain, much more than RWD ones, and expensive AWD / 4x4 rarely even have a chance to shine if you're not driving through the fields on purpose. And, as you've noticed, even they need help sometimes, so are they really worth it? ;) Remember - there's much more people keeping their fingers crossed for your CVT and other things not letting you down!
Wow! I came for tornado content and now I've found a new info source for my bro and I when we need to fix our vehicles! Thank you for pointing us towards Scotty. Subbing right after I comment.
Two very likable people who have fascinating channels. That's what UA-cam should be all the time. I'll second the choice of Toyota. My 2005 Xb Toaster still drives like the day I got her, and I have no plans on cutting her loose anytime soon.

I thought I was a big Pecos Hank fan... then I noticed his T-shirt toward the end and now he's my idol. I hope to Lucifer I run into him on the road in May when I'm out there!
It warms my cockles to know that both of these two characters are from Texas! Dallas, here... I love storm chasing. Just don't get a lot of free time to do it. Love Pecos Hank and Scotty!
Exactly what I would buy as a stormchasing vehicle !!! A Subaru WRX-sti.Brilliant 4WD, with special settings, even for driving in snow and mud.(it's basically a rallycar that's allowed on public roads) Plenty of power and speed to chase storms or get away from them if necessary.I would fit a rollcage in it.I think a decent rollcage in combination with sportseats and 5-point harnas give you more chance on surviving when caught by a tornado than when you're in an armor plated vehicle like the TIV or the Dominator.
We buy nothing but Toyota's!!! We were Chevy buyers years ago but the consumer reports changed our mind. We keep them forever because they rarely have any issues and you can drive them for three times the miles as most other cars. My newest is a Camry! We have had many trucks, including a Tundra, 4 Runners, a Corolla, even a Starlet which no one ever hears about. Good luck with your new set up! I'm looking forward to seeing what's next. I always enjoy your videos. :)
Darn, where was Scotty when I had to sell my beloved 98 Jetta gls because no one could seem to fix the constant stulling problem it had. I still have my Toyota Matrix and I'll never get rid of it. I love 7:47 and how you capture the far off storms with the stars surrounding it. Just beautiful! Good vid Hank!!
What an awesome rig! I love a guy who gets what he needs and doesn’t get sucked in by the latest gadgets. I’m the same way. I think you made a wise choice. Those dash cams are off the hook! That was money well spent. And I’m not even going to go into your camera set. My husband and late father, both amateur photographers (Daddy was also a printer) would as green as a tornadic sky with envy.
My wife drives her 2007 Toyota Highlander a LOT. I think she missed her calling as an over the road trucker. Her last car, a Toyota Matrix, had over 300,000 miles on it before the engine gave out. Pecos, I think you made a good investment. Keep up the good work on the vids.
1999 105 series Landcruiser here with 392,000km on the clock, I'll never understand why these tanks were largely ignored in the states (besides being rebadged as a Lexus and built in Mexico).
Still got 2 Toyotas....My rav4 and the Mrs has a brand new CHR Hybrid......I do miss my Old Hilux Surf she was a great car and it could go anywhere! Scotty is a legend. great video!
With the rear wheel drive, high profile, and front-heavy weight distribution of a pickup, add heavy crosswind and poor roads and it would need driving tips from Doc Hudson.
How does a “car expert” ride in a car and then not know if it has a CVT or not? Love how he then sticks his head in, looks at the gearshift and magically proclaims it does have one, incorrectly. Better keep working on those cars so you know what you’re talking about... 🥴
The thumbnail confused me so much for a second, cause I watch Scotty Kilmer's videos from time to time when I work on my own cars and I thought, what's he doing on the stormchaser channel?! It brings me joy you personally know the guy and have such history with him. :) Always cool to see guest appearances of other UA-camr's on one's channel.
Toyotas are great. Before I changed careers into IT I was a Toyota Master Technician for 12 years. I've currently got a 2010 RX350 and a 2012 RAV4 V6. Both have the same 2GR-FE engine and are AWD. Aside from the timing cover and water pump leak being a common issue with them they are very reliable. Toyota is still using the same 2GR based V6 engines to this day, and they have been since 2007. The RAV4 just went over 100k miles and the RX350 has 84k miles. I have only needed to do basic maintenance to both. No major repairs.
The awd rav4 has a locking rear differential. Scotty over exaggerates the problems an awd system can have. And if the transfer case breaks, you can always just find one at the junkyard or unbolt the driveshaft and still have fwd.
People act like 4 wheel drive will end all your problems. 4 wheels turning will always be better than 2 but it won’t fix every situation. I’d like to see more chasers driving Subaru’s. I’ve seen their AWD system do some uncanny stuff even with street tires.
Scotty and you are both honest good people. That's why you are friends. I love Scotty and I'm starting to love your lifestyle, taking care of random animals from time to time.

Tbh I like this video more than the one on Scotty’s channel lol 😂
Subbed! Can’t wait for some epic storm chasing!
This is awesome! I love Scotty Kilmer and Pecos Hank too of course lol
I know right! I had to double check the channel name, check the description, blink my eyes extra hard, and pinch myself!
I love the dry humor about the transmission.
Can't wait for some awesome storm videos this season!
This was lit. Scotty is lit. You're lit. Everything in my life is now lit. Stoked to see what you catch this season, stay safe happy trails
Can't wait for the Storms to popup... I get excited when I see Pecos Hank uploads.
Dude Toyota Rav 4's are 100% the best cars. They're sturdy and go forever, been driving the same one for almost ten years now.
Hoping the newer ones are as tough as the old.
1999 105 series Landcruiser here with 392,000km on the clock, I'll never understand why these tanks were largely ignored in the states (besides being rebadged as a Lexus and built in Mexico).
Made in Woodstock, ON
@@njam101 money goes right to japland
@@willcthestormchaser6493 Better there than the U.S.
Still got 2 Toyotas....My rav4 and the Mrs has a brand new CHR Hybrid......I do miss my Old Hilux Surf she was a great car and it could go anywhere! Scotty is a legend. great video!
I love Scotty Kilmer. Every time he laughs, I crack up.
Subbed haha
He's great to watch
Tony92x I love the 86!
@@rogerigez21 me too 😁
I didn't know you had chilluns! They are adorable! Love the vid, Pecos!
A large vehicle like a truck seems like it would be more dangerous in high wind like a big sail
My 4runner sailed like a manowar.
With the rear wheel drive, high profile, and front-heavy weight distribution of a pickup, add heavy crosswind and poor roads and it would need driving tips from Doc Hudson.
OMG!!! SCOTTY!!!! How fantastic is THAT to see two of my favorite You-tubers together!!! WOW!
God bless you both!
2015 Rav 4s come with a six-speed automatic transmission. The new ones have 8.
How does a “car expert” ride in a car and then not know if it has a CVT or not? Love how he then sticks his head in, looks at the gearshift and magically proclaims it does have one, incorrectly. Better keep working on those cars so you know what you’re talking about... 🥴
When Scotty said he's not goin anywhere... a lot can change in only a couple years, lol.
¡Hank is back, I wished Hank would've gone to Alabama, but I'm also sad because of the people that lost their life. 😔
Mr. NoseyBonk I live there
Where the tornado hit
@@willsdelongchamp3774 where did the Tornado hit? I think it hit close to Birmingham, Alabama. Somewhere in the South of Alabama.
@@mr.noseybonk2024 About 10-15 miles SE of Auburn.
So wait, what is this one being named: TIT-3 (pronounced tit-E)?
Toyota’s are great. Looking forward to this storm season.
Eccentrica Gallumbits!
So you had the Tornado Intercepting Toyota... why not the Advanced Stormchasing SUV?
don't make an ass out of me, butt I think that's a great name for it.
Talk about worlds colliding - two of my favorites! What a gift!
LOL.
4 wheel drive just gets 4 wheels stuck instead of 2.
J Hart
Haldex AWD like what most crossovers have is worthless if you're stuck. Unless they have an LSD or lockers, which very few do.
If you manage to get a 4WD stuck it's completely your fault.
@@SEEYAIAYE if you manage to get two wheels stuck, it's still your fault.
I saw the connection between you and scotty awhile back. Noticed your music in his videos..
Oh I love Scotty’s videos they help very much mechanical wise
