- Intense lightning storm with close bolts striking trees and scorching the ground all around me. Frequent cloud-to-ground lightning activity occurred for several hours with this slow moving supercell allowing me to capture several amazing close lightning strikes on camera in slow motion. After an evening of amazing close lightning strike captures, I set out to find and observe the locations of several of the close lightning strikes, namely a tree and the ground close by. Along the way we encounter several unexpected animals and other adventures.
LIGHTNING HITTING TREE
The tree that was hit by lightning had several chunks of bark blown off. This happens because the super-hot lightning instantly vaporizes the moisture in the tree the channel is in contact with. The expanding air blows the bark off and also causes several cracks down two main trunks of the tree. If you look at the video in slow motion, it appears the lightning channel jumps from one thick trunks to another. Tree observations confirm this as two separate main branches or trunks sustained cracks down them. The tree also caught on fire at the site of leader connection. It appeared that particular branch might have already been dead and dried out... Maybe not.
LOOKING FOR A FULGURITE / "Petrified Lightning"
Since I knew the precise location of a possible ground strike, I tried to find a fulgurite. A fulgurite is sometimes referred to as "petrified lightning." When the superheated lightning strikes the earth, it can fuse the sand and other substratum into glassy tubes or bulks. The higher the silicon content, the more glassy the fulgurite would be I'd imagine. Unfortunately, the particular ground strike I was trying to locate hit a piece of machinery directly behind the tree. No fulgurites were found.

lol nice
I've tried to catch racers. They just vanish.
Lol
I wondered if it was the same snake. 😂
Maby the lightning created that snake ;P
Why the hell isn't this a show on discovery? Fascinating and informative!...and free! Who could complain??
I have a similar feeling when I look at the videos suggested by Mr UA-cam at the right of my screen: mainly clickbait stuff
Remember that one tv show called "Storm Chasers"? i could of watched that for years..
Don't forget the "reality" crap that's on tv.
Because hank is way better than discovery
ErizotDread True that!
They say lightning never strikes twice in the same spot
Tree: Hold my apples
I actually laughed out loud... thank you, I actually really needed a good laugh
Doesn't it actually have thousands of strikes in the same place? That's why you can see it for quite a few seconds?
Exact same thing i thought when i watched it
*Looked like Bob Ross painted that tree a friend to share the pain with. I believe ol Bob was Sadistic. xD*
This needs to be the best "hold my" comment on YT. This is funnier than hold my beer. 😂
"One of your metal, porta potty, space machines.."
Sounds better than Pump House, huh. =D
Yeah, the silence after he said that to the lady on the phone was golden.

How is he so wholesome?? I came here for storms and stayed because I love him so much. He's so sweet and enthusiastic!
The same thing happened to me, I aimed to lose my fear of storms by learning more about them, but now I watch Hank’s videos because he’s such a cool guy
1:07 - And that, ladies and gentlemen, is exactly why you do NOT stand under trees during a thunderstorm!
Then again, if you stand in the open you're the tallest thing around

WHY IS NO ONE TALKING ABOUT HIM CHASING THE SNAKES I couldn’t stop laughing it was just so wholesome he’s like a child, curious about everything around him 😂
Like Gilbert Grape's brother Arney!
I saw one of his videos where he brakes for turtles. He found one dead and... gone.. in its shell, and gagged when he picked it up. He said bless their hearts!

Cottonwoods are adapted to being hit by lightning. I've seen them with the whole inside of the trunk burned out still living years later.
That's because the inside of the trunk or heartwood, isn't necessary to the tree other than for support. It needs the cambium just under the bark for living. 🤓
Pecos Hank if you made merch I'd totally buy a hoodie, I hope you make merchandise soon!
Thats too mainstream for Hank
Or a Western Coachwhip thong. LOL
Hank merch 100% some collections of his weather photography as a calendar or something.. safety kits for the car???? (Like for extreme weather or animal encounters) I'd buy that.

A true, down to earth, great channel! Can't wait to see more from you, Pecos!
Thans for watching amigo!
did you really just make that pun
@@livingroomset2084 yeah i was gonna say
The innermost center of a tree trunk is called the pith. Just outside this is called the heartwood. The reason why the center of a tree can be hit by lightning and survive is because the center is already dead. The newest cells of a tree is the bark, which is forming the outermost protective ring.
Heartwood has a reddish-pink hue, right?
It's that split in the bark that opens it up to bacteria and disease. Some disease carrying insect whose whole is spent trying to find a hole in the bark suddenly experiences a flash of lightning but that would cook the bug too so never mind. Suffice to say in t he long run the tree will die. It's just like us if we get a wound and don't tend to it. It will get infected and open us up to a whole host of nasty stuff.
BEST CHANNEL ON UA-cam
In a world of clickbait, channels like Pecos Hank and Aryanatomy really rise above the rest.
Preach!
which one?
In all seriousness there’s a guy who catches fake call centre / computer scams. His channel is equally as good!
Definitely the best weather channel.
Definitely caught the lady on the phone off guard with the metal porta-potty from space comment. xD This is why I love this channel.
I love the little asides about the various wildlife you come across. It certainly displays your love of knowledge and learning about the world around you. I'm glad you share it with us!

Best lighting shots I've ever seen keep up the lit work Hank!!!
"Lit work"... nice!
Hank: Snek? 🐍
Snake: Oh snap! [peaces out]
Hank: No, come back and accept my love!
Also some dang gorgeous lightning! We don't get good lightning storms around here, maybe once a year at best. I love watching it.
Can you do more research on these "Porta Potty Space Machines" and debunk why they get struck by lightning?
They are actually harnessing lightning strikes on purpose and beaming the power to the Pleiades.
@@PecosHank That's some very innovative waste disposal. Hope the Pleiadeen citizens don't mind too much.
The metal sheeting barrier wall thingies use as a conductor
They have a type of lightning rod on them
They are natural gas meters, they call them meter runs , they have a 9 or 10 foot cooper rod in the ground beside them for ground idk if that’s for lighting or not
When you turn on captions:
Lets see what kind of bananna it sustained.

7:40. A metal port-a-pody space machine
The past few days here in SW Florida have been an *_intense_* (more than usual) time of _extremely_ lightning heavy storms (6” of rain in 3 days)... in the time it took to write this 3 strikes were close enough to shake my house !!! Thanks for the wonderful videos !!!
Edit: I just checked *RadarScope Pro* (the *_best_* radar app period) to see how many strikes were in a 5-mile radius from my house... far too many to count. I went down to a 1-mile radius and lost count around 64 !!!
Im in cape coral right now on vacation the storms are badass im enjoying them
I should visit Florida !! If I could ever afford it...
@@LindaGailLamb.0808 yeah im staying at familys house so i dont have to pay for a hotel just gas i drove down
Gr b g
There is a system trying to form a hurricane right around Miami currently.
The lighting is like “you always say we are never close enough, well how’s this?!” 😂😂😂
I have had two experiences with lighting. The first when I was eleven when lighting struck a cottonwood about 500yards away. I was holding the wood framed screen door at the time.
It was flapping in the breeze and I went to watch it. Bright light and explosion in my head and I found myself on the floor ten feet from the screen. The paint on the metal part of the screen was smoldering and I had burns on my palm where I was holding on to the spring.
The second was years later while driving. I had my left arm resting in the window of my driver's door when lighting hit a transformer pole on the opposite side of the road.
My left arm flew up and into the cab with enough force as to strike my wife on the other side of the cab. She was unhurt; but, I could not move my arm. it just dangled.
I drove home taking about 45 minutes to do so. Slowly feeling and movement returned to my arm with no lasting effect other than a burn on my arm where it was
touching the door metal .
Steven Graham - I was in Orlando for the state forensics (speech and debate) championships in high school and after visiting with some girls from another school a friend and I had to get back to our room (it was one of those hotels that’s a series of 2-story buildings) during a massive storm. A moment after we started sprinting from the cover of one building to get to the next, lightning struck a hydrant within 3’ of us and from that full sprint knocked us both down to the ground. We were fine aside from scrapes and bruises from the fall and our hearing being a bit rubbish for awhile, but neither of us could stop shaking for about an hour after the event as it had scared the dren out of us !!!
Steven Graham you are so full of shit! That would not happen from a lightning strike from 1500 feet away!!
glad youre both safe and sound (:
Umberto Pertschy - it definitely gave me a *_very_* healthy respect for lightning and I won’t tempt fate if it’s anywhere near these days. I use *RadarScope Pro* (the same app Hank uses) to keep an eye on the weather (along with my weather station) and if a storm is dropping bolts within 10 miles I’ll move indoors... coming _close_ *once* was *_more_* than enough for me thanks !!
You are a natural human lightening rod! Ouch...
It's such a relief to watch a storm chaser who's not screaming at everyone the whole time.
Your calm temperament is much appreciated my friend!

I was thinking to myself about how cool it be to see the tree after the strike and then you went and found it!
I love this channel, keep up the great work dude!
Can you imagine the power of lightning? When the thunder cracks it shakes the entire landscape.
Joe Green - I was _literally_ knocked over from a full sprint when lightning hit about 3’ away from me... aside from the scrapes and bruises I was totally ok, tho I couldn’t stop shaking for about an hour after as it scared the dren out of me !!
I know that there is enough power to royal end the strikee

Oh, yeah, I got caught in a localized lightning cell, part of a larger area of developing thunderstorms out in the Flint Hills west of Eskridge, KS back in the early 1970s. Incredible! Cloud to ground strikes about every 10 seconds for about 10 minutes until the cell moved on. Each of the bolts hit within about 100 yards of my position, huddled in the center of the front seat of my car. Had the radio on (AM only in my 1969 Dodge Dart) and all I could hear was a buzzing howl that started out low and increased pitch until the next lightning strike. Never have seen anything like that before or since. Your video comes close if it was unedited.
Hank, I appreciate your channel more with each posting. Best weather chasing and nature videos I've seen. Very informative, humorous, and artistic at the same time. Love your music tracks also. Since they are your very own they add such personal depth and mood to the videos. I stopped wasting my time with the Storm Chasers series. You make them look like a bunch of stumbling clowns. Your life passions come through clearly and powerfully, including your love and respect for nature. Keep it going!
After Coyote, Hank is the only guy I've seen get that close to a Tarantula Hawk💀
Never a boring moment in any of your videos. NEVER!!!!
Less talk more action that’s what I always look for on a video and I think this channel is perfect for that. Very good job 👏🏽

I was in northern Ontario when two strikes happened, albeit a few years apart. First hit the hydro pole behind where we were staying at about 2:00 AM. The second was in the day as a storm was ramping up. It hit the quartz rocks, shattering pieces nearly ten feet into the air. In both cases, the smell of ozone the brilliance of the flash, and the sound as the bolt contacted the ground. Memorable experiences.
These shots are absolutely beautiful!! This is national geographic level!!
That's some awesome photography Hank. You know, many times people compare the odds of things to getting struck by lightning or lightning striking twice, etc.. I've nearly got struck about 10 times, so not much a fan of those comparisons anymore!
You deserve so many more views, this is raw content and it’s so amazing and beautiful and you put yourself in danger to acquire it and it deserves much more attention

Hank, in the last thunderstorm I got caught in, I was out fishing when the storm rolled in, and I saw some gnarly lightning. Some of it was extremely close. Thankfully, I made a lifesaving decision to immediately seek shelter.

Lightning in slow motion.....a BEAUTIFUL sight, though, yes, DAMN scary!
I love the little bit at the end of you reporting the damage the lighting did to that porta-potty-thingy. Already a wonderful video, but something about the ending just feels so wholesome and honest.
I once had five bolts of lightning hit ground and trees within 300 feet of me, all within a few minutes. It was on a golf course around sunset. A New York thunderstorm with more than the typical punch!
Why were you on a golf course in a lightning storm?
Linda Gail Lamb - In my early teens I was a caddy. Someone who is paid to carry the heavy golf clubs bag around the course for a golfer. On that particular day I stayed after hours to ‘shag’ for a golfer. That means he hits a bucket of balls and I would find them and pick them up. Well it had been a nice summer day weather wise but as can happen in New York, or most places, some thunderstorms developed fairly suddenly. I had finished working but when I saw the heavy purple clouds approaching rapidly, I chose to stay outside the clubhouse and wait for the storm to pass before riding my bicycle home. Well, I stood under the building awning as heavy rain commenced and one bolt after another exploded around me. At first I was thrilled by the spectacle but quite quickly I became justifiable scared for my life! I survived to tell you the tale.
How are your ears?
Just beautiful; amazing; awesome and awe-Inspiring.
The images and colors captured combined with your editing skills, scientific information, and overall time spent makes this video a complete work of art.
Thank you!
