Most of you know where you were when you heard the news that Elvis had died. I had just walked into the CBS-FM studios on 52nd St. in NYC. Dick Heatherton was still on the air and the first couple of breaks on this tape are him. Then...for the rest of the evening it was me and Curt Chaplin flying by the seat of our pants. Curt was working like a one armed paper hanger and I was desperately trying to keep everything together on the air. I'm amazed that someone (not me) had a copy of this tape and posted it. I sound young...and a bit nervous...and I guess I was.
Jim Harrington, It is a real treat and honor to see you post a reply here, sir! It's so interesting to read about "behind the scenes" stuff like that. I spent countless hours listening to you and Dick Heatherton, Bill Brown, Bob Dayton, Bill Winters, Don K. Reed, and so many others on "The Golden 101" back then. I enjoyed every minute of that great radio station! So nice to hear from you. - Best regards to you from John S. (Long time loyal listener of WCBS-FM from 1973 to 1991)
The pleasure is mine John. Thank you for listening. WCBS-FM was/is an amazing radio station. I literally thank God for having had the opportunity to work with that great group of people, in the world's greatest city. In a few weeks I'll begin doing mornings on a new radio network...Solid Gold USA...on the new SuperRadio app, which will be released soon. The network is being formatted to sound like WABC of the sixties and seventies. If you love the music of that era, you might want to download the app when it's released and give it a listen. Keep checking the App Store. We'll never sound exactly like WABC...their great talent was a unique part of that sound...but we're going to do our very best to give our listeners the 'feel and flavor of that great station. And thanks to today's technology, you'll be able to listen to us anywhere in the world. Again...thank you for having listened to WCBS-FM...especially back in days when I was on the air. And may God bless 'The King of Rock And Roll' and may he Rest In Peace.
I will definitely be looking out for the SuperRadio app download. It will be nice addition to my iPad. WABC was another station I listened to, that's for sure. Dan Ingram was the best. Can't wait to hear you again!
40 years ago this month....hard to believe. I was 16 that year and was watching TV with my mom when we heard the news. I still hate like hell that he's gone.
One of my very first memories is the death of Elvis. I remember I was playing outside on a sunny day up here in Nova Scotia, my mum was laying outside in the sun whilst listening to her radio and I recall the periodic news bulletins coming over the air concerning the death of Elvis. I think the memory stuck because I was picking up on the general stir that it all was creating in Grown Up World. I can distinctly remember my mum trying to call my aunt on the phone and then our own phone ringing because of it all. It was August 1977, I started grade primary a month later. Where did all those years go? ;)
I have a memory of hearing on the radio that he died... The car radio, on the highway with my mom going under an overpass... I was around 8 or 9... I remember my mom crying and me being really upset as well... The thing is, I wasn't born until 1996. The mom in my memory isn't really specifically MY real mom, now. This memory freaks me out. If anyone knows if this sounds like part of a movie or something can you let me know, because as of right now all I can think it could be is a memory from a past life. I love Elvis 😭
When I first heard the news that Elvis Presley has passed away, I was 21 years old at the time living with my parents in Hoboken, NJ. In death, Elvis Aron Presley has enjoin the immortal souls of America and will be forever remembered whenever the history of this nation is recorded. May he join the immortals souls from every land and nation which lives forever with God in Heaven. For God called him once again. God has called him Home.
Iwas 7 sitting in the living room remember it like it was yesterday morning still struggle to comprehend it imagine if was still here what he would think of what's going on in todays world and the future impacts he would have had on the music industry. RIP. E.p.may the Angel's in heaven sing in harmony with God almighty
When I first heard the news, I was on the way home from Arthur Treacher's Fish and Chips after picking up an order for my family and me. As soon as I got home I threw an 8 Track Tape in the recorder and recorded WCBS FM. The broadcasters in this recording here sound different, so I wonder what time of the day this was. When I heard the news it had to be around dinner time, maybe between 5pm and 6pm.
I was camping at Hammonasset Beqch State Park in Madison, Connecticut the day Elvis died in 1977. My mom was in the camper getting dinner ready. She had the radio on outside on the picnic table. Someone came over the radio and said that Elvis died. My mom is a big Elvis fan. I said to her 'Mom, Elvis died' My 8 year old self didn't realize the effect these words would have on my mother. She said 'stop kidding around like that Janine' Moments later her friend who was camping with us came over crying. Then my mom knew it was true. My dad and my brother came out to console my mom. We listened to an Elvis tribute on the radio as we sat around the campfire crying.
I do still remember that day in the summertime of 1977....If I'm not mistaking...the 16th of august in 1977 was on a wednesday. I had just turned 12 years of age on the 7th of august 9 days before that day...That wednesday afternoon....It happened to be that that same day I had to collect my study books in order to start my first year at High school (H.A.V.O.) on the opposite side of my family-home...By the time I got home around 12.15 pm in the early afternoon....and I took place at the couch in our livingroom to unload my huge schoolbag from all the study books I needed to wrap with paper-covers..it didn't take that long or soon after I had sat down...and like as if a thunder had just struck lightning the music stopped and breaking news got announced on the radio. While taking care of my study books....I heard the reporter announcing Elvis Presley had just died of a heartattack! And my whole world stood still. Right there and then. Just like that! Bamm!!!! Elvis was born in 1935....my daddy was born in 1937.....I was born in 1965.....and still no. 1 to me is ELVIS A. PRESLEY!!!!! His voice sounds like an angel to me....Lifts me up, cheers me up, builds me up, supports me time and time again...and more. Still need to live up to a promese I made to myself to visit Graceland in order to pay my personal respect towards Elvis honouring him near his grave for having giving such a huge loads of good vibes from way down his spine, his soul, his heart to people all over the world and he still does...for that only I (We) owe Elvis the one and only King of Rock 'n' Roll (weather he likes it or not : "Elvis is, was and forever will be the only one King of Rock 'n' Roll) to pass on all of his history in today's music as we all have come to know it today.
And Contrary to popular belief, Elvis was reading a book about Christ. Geller gave him a book called," The Scientific Face of Christ." As a Christian, I know I'll meet him along with others who died in Christ.
I remember my parents saying to me at 8 y.o. that they will still be talking about this when your an old man..well im 48 y.o. so far I think they will be right ..im getting there lol

I was 10 years old when tv and radio stations broke away from programming to announce the SAD SAD news that THE KING was dead.
I was camping at Hammonasset Beqch State Park in Madison, Connecticut the day Elvis died in 1977.
