In AA it’s beneficial to just see the implications of abusing alcohol and hearing peoples stories helps understand how alcohol can change your life or your actions

My mom used to take me to to AA with her because she didn't have someone to watch me. She's an alcoholic, I'm not. Most are open meetings and not exclusive to alcoholics (not like you can measure that anyways). It's a safe space to have open discussions on the effects of alcohol (including overconsumption) and overcoming it. Also, you do not NEED a sponsor, many people attend AA for years/decades and never have one. However, a sponsor is there to guide you through the 12 steps and is someone to lean on. Going to AA is not a promise to stop drinking which is why you see so many relapses among alcoholic nor do they promise you fix you in any way. It's a support system and way to interact with new people who have the same goal.
The problem with Nick Lachey, or anyone for that matter, is that there is no way for our legal system to know the root cause of your violence. Most alcoholics do not realize they have a problem and won't admit to such. So instead of sending you to prison, they address the issue from multiple aspects (like anger management and AA) hoping one will work.

As a new viewer can I make a suggestion that when you start talking about a new topic can you specifically say what show/person you are referring to? Like the whole Raquel discussion I have no idea who that is or what show. Maybe my fault that im not in the know but it sucks I can't follow along and learn it form you guys.

In college when I was 19 I got a citation for being at a party where underage drinking was taking place. I was not drunk and was completely respectful and did everything the cops said, but ended up having to go to a 6week alcohol rehab type class, and X amount of AA meetings, as if I’m an alcoholic. I’m not an alcoholic fyi. It was definitely quite weird but I guess better than going to jail or something

I’m not speaking on behalf of the 12th step community, but from my experience a very large portion of people who attend AA are court ordered. Diversion programs save a lot of people’s lives, and in the off chance that he is a high functioning alcoholic, he might be receptive to wanting sobriety. I’m sure the judge who made the decision did so based on this being categorized as an alcohol related charge. There are also people who are required to attend AA for professional reasons, including therapists or others seeking certain degrees. AA has “closed” meetings as well, where those who don’t identify as alcoholics (not necessarily people who are required to attend, but those who are observing or accompanying a family member) are unable to attend to protect their anonymity. Additionally, I’d presume this program requires him to drug test and/or do a breathalyzer during this time period, since it’s standard.
Long story short! Let’s be grateful for the legal system continuing to afford people opportunities to better themselves and avoid lifelong repercussions! His celebrity status doesn’t matter here, he’s a citizen just as much as anyone else.

Hey guys! I would have to say that AA as a whole organization welcomes anyone with a desire to stop drinking. But, the "anonymity" aspect of AA is incredibly important. Whether Nick Lachay either has a problem or is going there because of a court mandate, the program is always there. But AA follows the 12 steps with 12 principles and 12 traditions in the fellowship. It actually goes against AA principles to be brought into these kinds of public "programs" because AA is supposed to stand alone (though every meeting is democratic and conducted differently). I just think it involving the AA program as a requirement for punishment is ill advised. AA is a very much about "attraction rather than promotion."

Absolutely not to sitting on the same side of the booth. It reads tacky to me and so weird that you cant spend an hour or two not touching. I’d say no 100% and also maybe get the ick a bit 😂 Also you have to turn your 90 degrees to talk - so uncomfy! I’ll throw something else into the mix - if you’re sitting at a 4 chair table, you must sit next to each other and not across but that’s because it’s close but not directly next to each other. That way you can both people watch and easily talk to each other - ideal!

I went on a 1st date where I wish I had said no to the guy sitting next to me! It was mid-date and I was so thrown off by the abruptness of it because he didn't ask, so in that context it felt like too much, too soon. But I sit on the same side with my boyfriend often now so it's probably a good gauge of how you feel about the person, which is harder to process and articulate in-the-moment early on.
