It's fine. Dont worry
I can see it and I’m in the UK ❤️
I’m in the U.K. and I can see it fine
I can see it, so it must be fixed :-)
the song "superstar" was released in 1971 and reached #2 on the charts and became one of the carpenters best known hits as they were actually the top u.s. hitmakers of the 1970's.. legend has it she recorded this song on one take and reading the lyrics off a napkin! incredible !!and SHE WAS ONLY 21 YEARS OLD AT THE TIME! OTHERWORLDLY!!...
It’s so crazy... I’m 55.. I love ALL music.. from Billy Joel - to Jay Z - to AC/DC to Carrie Underwood - Jackson Browne - Lady Gaga.. Bach... all of it. But NOBODY moves me the way Karen Carpenter does. Every time I hear her voice I cry. I cannot explain it.... she had the most pure and perfect voice; it stops me in my tracks. Simply incredible and unmatched.
I relate to this whole comment so much. Karen was a true artist.
Magic
Nudie Bottom Liz
Maybe it's because we know her heart aches or fate . But mostly her higher quality voice expresses her feelings .
I'm 57 (58 in May), and I can understand what you are saying. I've always been a rock music fan, but when I listen to Karen Carpenter sing, I could listen all day. Her voice was so soothing and amazing.
She was also one of my first crushes as a kid lol
She was a beautiful woman with a beautiful voice.
She passed away my Senior year in high school. I graduated in June of 1983. She passed away in February of 1983.
Her voice is hauntingly beautiful. There will never be another voice like hers. So thankful the world was blessed with such a talented singer.
@norman smithers It was written by Leon Russell and Bonnie Bramlett.
@norman smithers She recorded it in 1969.
Amen Lori! Damn pitch perfect! Queen of haunt, Queen of ❤️, Queen of hopeless romantic! Love your reaction and commentary! Thanks for the beauty! Richard Carpenter the “Genius” he always never disappoints and has such an amazing paint brush using God’s music! Yep she was a sad, loving person who couldn’t understand the dark ways of the world.
Karen was the “Angel” that sang out of God’s Light!
Karen Carpenter IMO is period “The best female vocalist “ EVER! Can’t be touch. Let’s not forget her genius brother Richard Carpenter producer, composer, musician extraordinary!
Her voice is like you said has tears in the notes, and haunting. No one can translate like Karen
Or….Beautifully Haunting?
I am a grown man....and Karen's voice and this song brings a tear to my eye every time.
Karen Carpenter had one of greatest voices so mellow and smooth yet filled with melancholy and sadness. She suffered from anorexia which took her from us way too early. I will always love her music. I think your reaction and analysis was deep and well thought out.
It's tragic that we thought she was beautiful but she didn't 😢 RIP Karen
I agree. The review was right on. Sadly, her low self esteem was noticeable in her voice. That sad but beautiful voice. In the beginning her family had to convince her to sing, she just wanted to hide behind the drums.
We are so blessed to have her music intertwined with our memories. RIP Karen
Rainy days and Mondays is 👍✌
Anorexia and bulimia. She'd been in remission when her heart gave out.
Indeed! And she was a pretty damn good drummer too!
Pure, raw talent. Probably the best female vocalist of all time.
There will never be another Karen Carpenter! What a beautiful voice!!! Thanks Jayy!🙏
Same rip karen carpenter.
She is arguably the finest female pop singer ever recorded. Absolutely extraordinary.
Karen Carpenter is, by far, my favorite female singer of all time. With her dreamy voice, her amazing drumming, and her beautiful soul...
NO ONE even comes close!!
I couldn’t agree more
Her voice was so beautiful. But she was also a really good drummer!
An amazing drummer & Karen felt so comfortable & safe behind the drums .
Yeahhhhhhh ✔️
She actually beat out John Bonham for drummer of the year in Playboys reader poll.
That she was!
@@brewswillis9783 That was controversial, but to be fair, they're styles are completely different. Karen was an outstanding percussionist, groundbreaking as a female drummer.
She was transcendental. Ethereal, Angelic, other worldly, beautiful
Well said!!!
Majestic and Angelic doesn't do her justice, her voice never breaks even when she changes registers, it's amazing, Paul McCartney said she was the greatest female voice he ever heard. It's raw powerful and PURE.
karens voice is just amazing and like no other - just beautiful rich and velvety
Voice of angel. Absolutely beautiful. She passed at such a young age. What a huge loss. RIP Karen. 🙏
Written by Leon Russell and Bonnie Bramlett and recorded a couple of times before The Carpenters covered it. Was originally supposed to be called "Groupie". About a girl who had a one night stand with her favorite musician. He told her he loved her. He moved on to play in another city. She can't get him out of her head. He isn't coming back. She is heartbroken and in denial and writes him a letter and thinks that it will convince him to come back soon, but he doesn't feel the same way. She is heartbroken and is starting to realize that she is only fooling herself, and she probably will never see him again. A real tearjerker of a song, and a tremendous vocal performance. If you only had one song to prove that Karen Carpenter is the G.O.A.T., then this would be it!
I was watching tv the day it came across the bottom of the screen that she had died. I cried until I couldn't cry anymore. She had the voice of an angel and such a humble person. My teenage years were spent listening to The Carpenters A LOT. 😢
I was sitting in a waiting room at the old pink Balboa Naval Hospital in San Diego for a prenatal appt for my son. Such a sad, sad shock
I cried for a long time. I still listen to her.
I wasn't a Carpenters fan, but it's strange how some things stick in your mind nevertheless. I heard the sad news of Karen Carpenter on the ride out to ski after school let out that Friday. I was in the front passenger seat, and the radio reported the story. I remember my breath catching and I slowly turned my head toward the patchy snowscape passing outside my window. I knew I had heard correctly.
We will never hear a purer voice or a song more beautifully sung! RIP Drummergirl.
Her voice was a contralto. Beautiful and melancholy. No matter what genres of music you listen to, Karen's voice always makes people stop and listen. What an incredible talent she was. RIP Karen.
No auto-tune, real instruments, very rare in today's so-called music.
Her voice is rich on every note, at every level, caresses each word perfectly...
You said, "her voice is like no other". You are right. There are a lot of beautiful voices in the world, but Karen Carpenter was the most beautiful, angelic voice ever heard. So sad that we lost her at such a young age with such talent.
Her voice was warm maple syrup poured over hot buttermilk pancakes, with a dollop of whip cream, and a sprinkle of cinnamon.
That... is the best description I've ever heard of her voice!
Thanks!
@@dwightshaver9468 Agreed!!! Such a smooth and delicious voice😍
Perfect ...
GREAT! NOW I WANT PANCAKES (or waffles)
@@ZakhadWOW HAAAAAAA!!!!
Perfectly stated!
One of the purest voices I have ever heard.Of course Karen Carpenter is one of my favorite all time singers.
To her voice, she was the Emily Dickinson of modern female vocalists, a woman who knew how to internalize the pain in her life and channel it to her art.
The true voice of an angel. Rest easy beautiful soul.
A lot of fans say her voice was so so soothing, and haunting. Karen is one singer that is hard to cover.
Your the first to say that, and I agree, almost impossible to cover Karen Carpenter
Not only did she have a great voice but she was also an accomplished drummer...
For this song she literally walked into the studio right from the street and stepped up to the microphone and recorded this in ONE take.
Karen had pitch perfect vocal chords. An absolute plus as a Contralto
Add brother Richard's scores, arrangements and instrumentals to her angelic voice and the end product is as close to pop music perfection as it gets.
Beautiful Brother and Sister Duo 😎
You have just listen to the most beautiful voice ever!
I agree. She's been bitten by the Karen Carpenter bug. She will never listen to music the same any more.
Karen's voice is without equal. And don't apologize if you can seem to pin down what exactly it is that makes it so exceptional -- none of us can. That's why we just say she had the voice of an angel. It's like the sun on a bright autumn day with the smell of smoke drifting through the trees. Her voice is at once smooth and warm, but with an underlying melancholy that stops you in your tracks.
The "secret" day be in part that she produced very low volume. Might add depth.
I think you described her voice very well.
I remember she played the drums. She was very shy at first and didn’t want to be out front. So sad that she died from Anorexia. Everyone tried to help her but couldn’t. She will always be remembered.
I was in 6th grade when she died. My homeroom teacher was very sad, and warned us all about the dangers of anorexia.
Great teacher!
I started listening to Karen in 69--NO one comes close to her! Listen to A Song For You by the Carpenters. Karen's voice really comes out, and it's a GREAT song.
Geepers Jayy, you are becoming more analytical and profound than professional music critics. "Haunting," spot on.
THANK YOU ROB !
I stumbled across your review. Karen had one of the most unique voices, she had such amazing range and control. Her story is sad, you never know what demons people are facing and dealing with, however she left us with some beautiful music.
Karen Carpenter ranks as one of the top ten best female vocalists in pop music history, at least from the rock ‘n roll era. There’s really not much debate about that. Just a gorgeous voice. It‘s so sad to think of all the music we were deprived of hearing as a result of her passing much too soon.
her voice was a mix of haunting and sadness. unique and lovely
Karen was a once-in-a-lifetime singer! The amazing Luther Vandross does a fantastic cover of this song!
Have yourself a merry little christmas-- the carpenters version with Karen's lead vocal is absolutely best version and a stunning pop performance. Have seen it reduce a grown man to tears of emotion.
This is my favourite Carpenters song. It really touched my soul.
Such a shame she died so young, only 32. RIP beautiful lady
Her voice as emotion when she sings the songs, the greatest singer of all time.
Her and Joni Mitchell are the best in my opinion.i can't decide who's better!
Her pitch is phenomenal ...Her voice resonates in a way that sounds like it's amplified or synthesized but it's not. Just clean, crisp, it's heartbreaking to think someone so talented, beautiful & intelligent could have demons tear her apart due to self image problems. So devastating. I guess with such a heavenly voice it belonged in heaven. I'm grateful she had time to share it with the world. Should've been longer though. Rest in peace Karen. I hope you found in your eyes the beauty we all have found in ours.
Hi Jayy, and thanks for coming back to the greatest female voice in modern music history. Karen "Angel" Carpenter... RIP Karen we miss and love you!!
That’s exactly what the song is about! Nice interpretation!
Her brother Richard (on keys) was the musician of the family originally and Karen tagged along, only playing drums in his jazz trio at first when she was 16.
Like most, he was shopping around for a record deal but they weren’t interested in instrumentalists and wanted vocal groups. After throwing something together quickly THAT VOICE just came out after being hidden for so long. Can you imagine?
She did not enjoy being the center of attention at first, especially as they took her from behind the drums and she was standing out front. She always thought of herself as drummer first, singer 2nd.
Check out the videos on here of her tearing it up in her drum solos! Amazing 😻
I get what you are saying. There is something so soothing about her voice yet it kind of has something else to it that I can't define either. Someone said if silk could sing it would sound like Karen Carpenter.
Dionne Warwick said that.💖
The word you're looking for is purity
Perfect pitch, emotion and you understand every word, no lyrics needed. She was a one and only.
Greetings All:
If you really want to see a great concert check out : The Carpenters BBC 1971 Concert - Amazing, simply Amazing. Also, on the Carol Burnett Show in 1971 The Carpenters and when they sing SuperStar - Oh...Karen was on the drums and really doing it! She looked very beautiful in that yellow she was wearing as well. Peace.
Karen’s voice Goes into My Heart ❤. You Feel every Emotion. 😢. I Love Her Rip. Pete sr. Siny One Of The Greatest Ever
Karen Carpenter was a perfectionist. She probably drove the studio crew nuts with her drive for flawless tracks....and thank God she did! This is one of THE BEST (top two) songs she ever performed
🎶 Thank you for listening all the way to the end note. It adds to the haunting feel we experience.
I appreciate your reactions to The Carpenters. I find it wonderful that Karen can reach out and touch us all across time through you and everything feels a little calmer and less chaotic. Her voice is the most soothing thing I know, it takes me right back to being a kid in the 70's with her angelic voice wafting through the air. I don't do a lot of nostalgia but when I do, I like it sung by Karen Carpenter.
Aww great song great reaction. Carpenters were a brother sister duo. Richard wrote most their songs was a great backup singer, and was an incredible musician. Karen had the voice of an angel and could play a mean drum. A VERY good drummer. She liked doing that better then singing. Her brother coaxed her from behind the drums when he heard her voice and she was never truly comfortable. She was taken from us much to young dying of anorexia. Her death brought much attention to the eating disorder. RIP Karen. Now you truly sing with the angels 👼👼
Notable musicians, like Paul McCartney, said she was one of the few artists that they’d buy a ticket to see live. She was called “one-take Karen”, because she nail a song in ONE TAKE. She’s widely considered to be one of the finest singers of all time, if not THE finest voice ever recorded. Every time i hear her voice, i start crying. What a waste. What an amazing legacy she left for us in her all-too-short career. RIP Karen Carpenter 1950-1983
You hit the nail on the head!! Her voice is beautiful, but is haunting too!
So very sad the loss of this beautiful voice.Voice of an Angel.
Leon Russell co-wrote this song with Bonnie Bramlett. He also wrote A Song For You and This Masquerade. My three favorite Carpenters covers.
Karen was a drummer who sang. She always told everyone that. And she sang quite by accident to help her brother out on a song. The producers never let off from that moment.
It doesn’t take too many notes to realize the person singing has enormous talent does it?
You are spot on about Karen's voice. I've often described her voice as hauntingly beautiful. All of the Carpenters fans will know what you meant when you said that. In fact, here's one definition of the word that I looked up in the dictionary.
haunting:
1 - remaining in the consciousness; not quickly forgotten: haunting music; haunting memories.
I think you would like the video of The Carpenters doing a medley of Burt Bacharach songs. Karen sings and plays the drums for13 minutes straight and she sounds so clear. It is in Black and white but it is worth a listen. How many singers then and now could do both and be perfect? I believe it is from 1971.
Karen Carpenter is probably the most amazing, naturally-gifted vocalist I've ever personally heard. And she knew how to use her gift to give you wonderful chills on many levels. Love her and miss her. Gone at 32. Imagine the body of work she could've amassed by now, yet still, she left behind MANY beautiful songs!
I can only imagine how many women, through the decades, who have deeply missed their lovers or loved ones and deeply identified with this great production.
Karens voice can just break my heart....I love her songs...beautiful
lady...miss her.💔🎶🌻
Great reaction! Yes, her voice has an incredible depth quality to it. Rainy days and Mondays never really bother me, until Karen sings about them. She takes me on the ride with her, when she sings
unas de las voces mas dulces de todos los tiempos...seguro estara cantando con los angeles.ya que era un angel como persona
She can make a grown man cry like a child.
I saw the Carpenters in concert. I loved them. It was heartbreaking when Karen died from heart failure due to anorexia.
Such a voice!!! The brother/sister angle is impressive since he wrote songs for her. It breaks my heart that she died from anorexia. It wasn't understood then. She could rock the drums too! Such an amazing young woman. 😿💘
I was 16 when she died. WE have lost many great singers since then but I have to say that when she died so did one true voice.
She was brilliant. There will never be another one like her imo. Thanks for appreciating her music, it’s so awesome to see a new generation discover her.
The absolute heaven sent voice of Karen carpenter giving it to our ears we are truly blessed.
The music of those days are gone forever. It was an era of extreme talent and Karen was the best vocalist of the time.
Yes Richard did a great job giving the song the little upbeat parts to give optimism, but in the end sad song of unrequited love. Karen's voice is perfection.
Her voice blends so beautifully with her brothers voice in the chorus too.
The great Luther Vandross covered this and it's gorgeous. Both of these beautiful artists left this world way before their time..
One of the most beautiful songs of the 70s - sung by one of the most beautiful voices ever.
One of the best voices ever, the reactions to her are very positive...
If you ever wondered what an Angel sounds like, this is it. This is the voice of an Angel!
Loved your reaction! I interpret the song the same way.
Karen's voice was so unique. Smooth. Mellow. Rich velvet. Liqiud gold.
Her voice and the arrangements make you wish there were many more Carpenter songs recorded, if only she had lived and they had ten more years of music. i can still remember my first memory of this song, i was about 7 and riding in the backseat of the car
Her voice is like no other. Her brother was in credibly talented and I think he never recovered from her death either. I treasure the Carpenters.
OMG I have goosebumps when she sings any song, I always search for my fave voices story, about her, she was put aside back in 70s, she was a woman, (and look what happens with Tina Turner) another story her mom's was more kinda of her brother, she feel it, maybe a rejection, I don't know, seems like she try to get attention, no internet, black and white tv, her brother is such cool guy, but I think some people, mostly needs to aprove from parents, mom or dad, but based my reading, her brother loves her 'til the moon, another voice who's gone, guys I read that he never sing again after her passed away, sad story, but she was just so lovely, and thank you for bring this video, loved your reaction girl ❤️💋
When you're hearing a once-in-a-lifetime genius level talent for the first time. Karen Carpenter's vocals and control has never been duplicated. She was pure perfection and this was a live performance. No lip syncing or autotune just raw talent.
Great reaction. Thank you. Karen Carpenter....... "like no other". Truer words were never spoken.
My favorite Carpenters song
Absolutely correct, “like no other”. Very well put.
This is the voice that can never be copied or immitated or impersonated.never.
It's so cool how you picked up her singing qualities..she sang from the heart..her pitch is perfect..it touches our hearts...
I love her music since the 70's when my parents had albums of her...i used to play them ..
She always sang about her life..she was famous..so very busy..and must have fallen for another superstar..and seeing him was impossible...so we can relate to this very much...
THAT voice. Like velvet.
Her voice was so rich, and warm it was almost comforting. She had a way of making her voice intimate; like she was singing just for you. You're right: there's never been another like her. You might like another one of my favorites: For All We Know.
I don't care what people say simply the best vocalist of all time melancholy and soft as silk
When you can recognize a. Singer from just a few notes they are truly special. She is one of the few!
Raw, powerful, angelic, ethereal, majestic...nobody can touch her, NOBODY, she's on a level that cannot be described, Paul McCartney said she was the best female pop singer on the planet, syrupy pop sure but I was 14 at this time and sadly did not realize just how truly amazing she was until much later.
The depth and richness of her vocal still makes me tear up, and I’ve heard this song a billion times.... one of my favorite songs. Interesting background to the song, and you picked up on it. Originally written by Leon Russell, and Bonnie Bramlett, released as “Groupie(Superstar)”, the Delaney & Bonnie version, is very soulful, and from the perspective of an experienced woman. The Carpenters version changed the line “ I can hardly wait to sleep with you again”, to “be with you again”. Rita Coolidge also does a lovely version. Luther Vandross does one too, but it’s too busy for my taste.
Very interesting! Thanks for that background info.

@@sukie584 Thanks so much for that link! I enjoyed that version very much.
Colleen Hewitt does a different but equally good version. Check her out.
She has true sincerity along with really compelling notes in the lower register. Very few can convincingly pull those off.
I've watched SO many of these reaction videos on The Carpenters... never fails... no matter who is reacting...the MOMENT Karen opens her mouth... their eyes get wide... as if they can't believe what they're hearing... and all I can say is, "yep.. that is our Miss Karen".
There are those that feel that some of her songs were a reflection of what was happening in her life thus adding an emotive depth to her singing. That "haunting" quality drew many to her voice. A voice so beautiful and distinctive that we will never hear the like again.
Her voice is pure magic.
