Only real musicians who knew of him…saw him at Town Hall with Larry Coryell and Michal Urbaniak. He was headlining. I’d only heard of him but Bob D’Andre, a musician I was acquainted with, said this cat is something special. He was. The king of tone
Better than most. Do you think. Every living blues rock player in the day wanted to sound and play like Roy. I get a kick out of Roy sometimes he will turn his back so as not to give up some of his fashion chops. Not that many could anyhow. Few if any.
I remember hearing this song for the first time... went right out looking for the tape. this track and Sneaking Godzilla Through The Alley were my favorites of the record. This guy was one cool cat with his Telecaster. Nobody will ever sound like this again.
Just EPIC when @ 7:23 he motions to the drummer to hold up, and then he tears into Korsakov's ' Flight of the bumble bee' . Amazing work and thankfully it was captured on video.
This is a guitarist Jeff Beck would go see when he had the chance. There is a book called Roy Buchanan: American Axe which tells his story (I didn't write it, just read it and recommend it).
Jeff and Roy were good friends both did tunes they named after that friend . The extended version of messiah is one of the very best pieces you'll ever hear Rock On J Deuce RnR Toronto Canada
Nobody Could have bent those strings like that! Except Roy. That guitar was born from Roy’s ribs I kid you not! An’ I tell you this. He never sold his soul to nobody! That’s them Blues like it was meant to sound. Now turn out them lights. Cause Roy has left the stage.🇦🇺
@@gregorygoldsmith1921 Yes, there is a segment in this performance where you can even see he walks over to his pedal board. You can’t produce delay like that without a pedal.
The late great Roy Buchanan here doing some great stuff no effects no pedals his signature sound is all in his fingers! Great talent and sound! Very underrated guitarist along with Danny gatton two of my favorite players along with Rory Gallagher Gary Moore Alvin lee frank Marino Scotty Anderson srv and junior brown
It's funny and kinda heart warming to see that Roy, towards the end of his career, had become more lively and animated onstage. As if he was feeling more confident or something. And yes, he's not the greatest singer, but his voice wasn't bad at all and suits his music just fine
He could get the most dirty tone, to the most soulful tone from a tele. When you listen to Mrs Pressure, you here a tone never heard on a telecaster. Just magic!
He created sounds with his telecaster will never hear again in my pain is going to be very most underrated guitarist out there rest in peace for you per Gladys and great great music
Would you happen to know if Roy is using the Bill Lawrence T1 &T2 pickups here? I know the tone is in me and my fingers but I'd love to Know the kind of pickups. I'd also like to terrorize my neighbors at night. Thank you.
Anybody know where I can get good clones of the 'Nancy' pickup set which I believe were in Roy's other maple-necked tele? Virgil Arlo maybe? Fuck it. I can take a loan against my house. Also, does anyone know if the Bill Lawrence T1 &T2 pickups are in the guitar used in this video? Thanks.
I thought I heard a small bit of the intro to "Xanadu" from Rush during the opening. I don't know the year of this video so it makes me wonder if Roy was tributing Alex or if Alex was inspired by the riff. (or stole it outright!! lol!!)
I will believe he rarely used effects but surely here I hear echo, so is this a moment where he uses some stuff or how then does he create echo on the tele without some pedal/amp effect? I know it is possible to create reverb effects with a tele without extra pedals (by accident I still have to figure out how I did) but still it sounds here as if he uses some device. But regardless of that this man is awesome...love his playing..
Truly, this man was an underappreciated genius. RIP Roy. Thanks for the incredible music.
Only real musicians who knew of him…saw him at Town Hall with Larry Coryell and Michal Urbaniak. He was headlining. I’d only heard of him but Bob D’Andre, a musician I was acquainted with, said this cat is something special. He was. The king of tone
That poor Telecaster didn't have enough frets for ol' Roy. A True Legend. Rest in peace.
I wish I could've listen to it in real life and hear it as loud as it actually was.
imagine getting blasted in the fucking face by that first big bend
Roy did it his way and I appreciate that, no fanfare, no band programs to bog him down. He did his own thing and did it better than most.
Better than most. Do you think. Every living blues rock player in the day wanted to sound and play like Roy. I get a kick out of Roy sometimes he will turn his back so as not to give up some of his fashion chops. Not that many could anyhow. Few if any.
An amazing guitarist and he turned down the Rolling Stones. I have loved him since I heard him
Amen Brother
The greatest guitarist you never heard of. Roy was the best. R.I.P. Roy Buchanan

Your the only person I know read it besides me
I also have it; i've been a fan over 40 years.
I read it. I convert n preach Roy to those who THINK they know.
If your world is limited by Keith Richards...sit n listen.

aka worlds greatest unknown guitarist ! amazing
Love Roy Buchanan!
A bit esoteric for most but nirvana for others.
guitar nirvana here.
The best song ever played!'!
Fantastic use of reverb and digital delay pedals - never heard anything like it!
Do you see any effects pedals on the deck ?
Roy did not use effects. All the sounds were made with his hands he was a master. RIP Roy
That was gods gift to the blues world the hands of a master sorcerer the only effects were Roy Buchanan
RIP

Sounds more like analog delay to me.
* edit* Just looked it up, around this time he used a Boss DD-2 digital delay.

Reverb is an effect. No hands do that.
Dude roy is amazing but his guitar is definitely drenched in effects. Def reverb and sounds like delay as well
Don’t know where the “no effects comment is coming from?
This is “over effected”. Roy is much better than this track.
Roy was experimenting with effects here I guess given the scope of the theater....I really liked the intro the best...those unusual sounds..
He’s obviously experimenting with delay and reverb effects here
Holy Crap!

Roy Buchanan could have taught Eddie Van Halen and Hendrix a few things. He was a true master of the guitar.
nothing compares to this
Bad Ass!!!!!!!!😎🎸 Roy!

Wild bendings, OMG...

NEVER SEEN or touched, ONLY ROY (q.e.p.d.)
Roy’s purging himself’
No guitarist has had such a sound bending tour de force as an opening!
I do have a strange feeling!
I always called him Mr slinky strings.

Well, you did it again, Roy! You transcended me!
The sounds that he made without a waw waw pedal
There is no wah wah effect. That's a delay and reverb.
Fucking legend!
j'aime cette voix !!! j'aime cette musique. Unique cet homme

thank you so much from a dedicated fan!!
Unreal playing
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🙀thank Mister ROY
Damn I LOVE IT!!!
Breaking out my lespaul custom on this one...
Roy was a frustrated person and his playing showed it. very talented but his frustration over road his taste. This was also true with Danny Gatton.
I once worked a Roy Buchanan show!
ebw!
For some reason Roy’s playing always reminds me of Willie Moscone’s finesse in billiards . Same standards almost
Wow
His best sound was with his old Telecaster.
He can make any tele sound great. Tone is in the fingers brother
Roy’s special effects
Tout un art dont tu es le maître 😝😜😭je t'aime ❤🇫🇷

Tape delays were also common. Units would typically be by the amp, not on the floor.
He’s got a boss dm2, that and boss ce2 you can hear him use during this period and in a couple of bootlegs
He's ok, definitly no Henry Kaiser though.
Kaiser couldn't scrub Roy's toilet....
