The day I heard he died I went out and got a bottle of scotch, drank most of it, and cried like a baby. His music had been such an influence on me I felt like I'd lost a close friend.
I was lucky enough to see him perform a week before he passed away in Aspen, Colorado. He invited me backstage with the band. Sweet, soft spoken man. Miss you Roy.
I seen him in auckland new zealand about 4 months before he got / or did hang himself ... i was so sad ... he was my idol .... i still tear up listening to his beautiful tone and precise notes .... absolutely magical ... my favourite sunny afternoon beer garden cold larger music .... may the messiah return ... rip roy .. we miss you ..
My LORD, I believe I just got religion. The most gifted guitarist I have ever experienced. I grew up in the 70"s went to all the concerts nation wide. I missed the boat here.

I saw Roy twice in the Cleveland Agora in the 70's and once in Atlanta in the late 80's. The man could take a mediocre band of session musicians and bring it to the front. A genius, a virtuoso, the world will never see the likes of him again.
He never gets stuck!! It's one thing to know your scales everywhere on the fretboard, but it's really something else to know just what to place where in a tasteful way. I can't think of anyone that was so adept at getting out of jams on where you should go next on the fretboard with so much feeling as Roy did. What a macroscopic attention span he had!!

Achingly beautiful. No whammy bar, just volume swells and a sweet touch. Some people can make a guitar talk, but Roy whispers in your ear and tells that he loves you.❤
Roy was the real deal no pedals no effects just straight amp and volume swells and the ultimate in tone control! A true master of the telecaster! A guitar genius who would blow Jimi away the only guy like this is the late great Danny Gatton both the greatest unknown or known guitarists anywhere also gary Moore and Rory Gallagher were both guitar gods also! Who do we have today? Joe bonamassa while I like him Roy and Danny are miles and miles ahead Joe will never be in these guys league! Just an opinion Roy was brilliant!

He focused on the fretboard without much facial expressions meant he’s not trying to impress the audience as much as producing masterpieces guitar work. A truly guitar legend. RIP
Rare occasions we are introduced to the music and talent of a Roy Buchanan, Danny Gatton, Joe Pass etc. They are held in reverence by their piers however their largest contributions to the field go unnoticed. In the case of Buchanan & Gatton they never sold out their souls to the top 40 gods refusing to compromise their musical ethics. As a result I watched Joe Pass at Blues Alley (75 seat venue) Buchanan at Warner Theater, Gatton at Birchmere. I DIDNT see Madonna at Capitol Center 50,000 seat.

You feel every note every bend the expertise he has with manipulating the volume and tone controls while picking and bending so perfectly ...there's a dozen things going on at once. My friend Rob L. introduced me to Roy in 1975 with Sweet Dreams and The Messiah Will Come Again. I was hooked... We went to see Roy live at the Harvard Sq. Theater on May 2, 1976... Sadly, Rob passed away at the age of 37 from a heroin overdose... I miss him...
Rock Palast should get a statue. I have seen so many absolutely brilliant acts every Sundaynight on German TV(while living in The Netherlands) : Kevin Coyne, The Police, Thin Lizzy, Roy Buchanan, you name it, they were there.

Thats how i would describe his song "Judy" with those shrieks and howls... what a tone he had. No other guitar player since that i know of could sound like that, that is a true artists fingerprint right there. You know its Roy playing every time if you know what to listen for.

Most memorable show in the late 80's. St Kilda melb aust. Toured with a three piece band that was untouchable. Roy was sensational and the bass guitarist had no peir. Playing bass like lead. Unforgettable loud and nothing I've seen or heard since comes close. Nothing like live music.
same tour i think he came here , New Zealand .. be abt 87 ? ... auckland town hall .. remember it like yesterday .. i did actually cry when i found out he had passed ... still (at 60 plus ) get the odd tear listening to his tone and beautiful sound ... simply a NUMBER ONE ... as he would say .. there are no number ones ... but he definately was a number one .. not "thee " .. to hard to choose ... but a number ONE , up there with only a handful of others .. but roy was a first too , on the road alone in 1952 at age 13 ... which alot of people dont realise .. he was well before the greats that came in the 60's,they all came to listen and learn from Roy ... and we know why .... hes simply a .... mindblowingly emotionally amazing tone and touch natural player like no other ... My favorite guitarist of all time! I had the opportunity to see him live sometime in the 70's not sure which year, lol). H was the lead act for Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow. I went to see Roy though, and their was only about 100 people in Miami's Gusman Hall. He put on an amazing show, kinda laughed at the small crowd and wailed!
I've read a couple of comments, all good I have to say about Roy. One stood out, a lady said she first heard his genius on a guitar a year ago, I'm 47 years of age tomorrow and first heard Roy when I was 5 years old. I could another 42 years. I agree with everything but it should be mentioned that in the 80's Roy started using a Boss Delay. As far as I know that was the only pedal he ever used. Nothing to hide mistakes with, that's for sure. It's easy to play fast with an OD pedal covering your ass!
Who's the piano player? He's awesome! He also played for dire straits, if you watch the walk of life(one of the greatest piano songs ever) he was the piano player!
Roy truly speaks with his guitar, he adds something that alot of guitarists don't use as much, dynamics, this is what makes his playing sound more soulful, you can have all the technical skill in the world but still not master this aspect of playing. Im not claiming to have known the man, but Roy didn't seem like the happiest person, i believe he ended up committing suicide in a jail cell in 1988. This is where the soul of his music is though, its all in experience.
I don't believe he committed suicide. Autopsy showed he was bruised all over from a beating but there were no bruises around his neck from hanging. You can only bruise when you have a heart beat I am sure you can figure out the rest. Rest in peace Roy.

the master of the guitar barring none. if you've never heard of roy buchanan believe me when I tell you your favorite guitar player has. trust me give this song a listen and you will understand why.
This performance was a mere matter of weeks before I got to not only see, but meet my guitar hero in person on 4/3/85: Roy sized me up and down before saying a word to me, and exclaimed: "You look like a Stratocaster player!" When I disclosed that I was a Gibson Les Paul player (at the time), Roy proceeded to tell me the story about purchasing his new Gold Top Les Paul Anniversary, and informed me that it was to appear on his (then) upcoming album, which it absolutely did. I found it amusing Jeff Beck told me the German drummer for Roy's backup band in this video (Martin and the Daintees) wanted to start a fist fight with him when Jeff went to see (and meet for the first time) Roy at the Marquee Club in the Spring of 1985 during Roy's 1985 Europe tour.

Not only did Roy have monster chops and a killer tone I think he was unique in the way he could put a blues sensibility into a "traditional" or non-blues melody. He does it here and beautifully on "Sweet Dreams." Thank you Roy, RIP.
There are a lot of fine Tele players in this world, but i think Roy has the purest Tele sound.
The great jazz guitarist Larry Coryell told me before he died that 'for what he did, Roy was the best in the world'. Amen.

Roy truly speaks with his guitar, he adds something that alot of guitarists don't use as much, dynamics, this is what makes his playing sound more soulful, you can have all the technical skill in the world but still not master this aspect of playing. Im not claiming to have known the man, but Roy didn't seem like the happiest person, i believe he ended up committing suicide in a jail cell in 1988. This is where the soul of his music is though, its all in experience.
I don't believe he committed suicide. Autopsy showed he was bruised all over from a beating but there were no bruises around his neck from hanging. You can only bruise when you have a heart beat I am sure you can figure out the rest. Rest in peace Roy.

This performance was a mere matter of weeks before I got to not only see, but meet my guitar hero in person on 4/3/85: Roy sized me up and down before saying a word to me, and exclaimed: "You look like a Stratocaster player!" When I disclosed that I was a Gibson Les Paul player (at the time), Roy proceeded to tell me the story about purchasing his new Gold Top Les Paul Anniversary, and informed me that it was to appear on his (then) upcoming album, which it absolutely did. I found it amusing Jeff Beck told me the German drummer for Roy's backup band in this video (Martin and the Daintees) wanted to start a fist fight with him when Jeff went to see (and meet for the first time) Roy at the Marquee Club in the Spring of 1985 during Roy's 1985 Europe tour.
Saw Roy a lot of years ago in New Zealand. Unreal.
Was there .. town hall auckland .. think 87 ? Mind blowing ... as mind blowing as SRV and thats saying alot .... we were lucky to see roy play .. i get tears now and then , gettn old , listening to him and stevie ... may they RIP ....

@@daverlb it was amazing ... town hall is a concert chamber so its made for music ... i left in a trance .. just like i did twice seeing SRV ... we were very lucky seeing Roy ... didnt deserve to die like he did ....
@djowens123 - Oh, I'm not worried about it. Life would be poorer if we didn't allow ourselves to be touched by special things. Thanks for the thought though. Way back when I bought my first electric guitar it was a Telecaster and Roy's the reason why.

Not only did Roy have monster chops and a killer tone I think he was unique in the way he could put a blues sensibility into a "traditional" or non-blues melody. He does it here and beautifully on "Sweet Dreams." Thank you Roy, RIP.
