I have the fully loaded version of this bike, and have been riding it for about a year now. Few things to note:
- The default Road mode doesn't do the bike justice. While its tame for riding around town and has plenty of punch, if you want to get snappy instant throttle response you need to use the Dynamic or Dynamic pro option. BMW should have just enabled those from the factory instead of making it an option.
- Adaptive suspension is amazing, very confidence inspiring and love how the bike totally transforms as soon as you go from Road mode to Dynamic (Also changes suspension settings). Passenger mode is amazing too, the bike's height increases to compensate for the passenger.
- Default sound is meh, threw a SC Project in there and it sounds much better now.
- Tech is amazing. It was buggy at first but most bugs got fixed after the update at the dealership. BMW's app is the best compared to every other manufacturer and shows amazing data about all the rides. All this is recorded automatically once the app is setup, and can be exported to formats recognizable by a bunch of software.
- Little things like heated grips, auto cancelling turn signals etc make a huge difference. BMW has so much tech all over the place, you do not even realize you need all this tech till you have it. There are a tons of things that give you peace of mind like tire pressure monitoring system, cornering abs etc that work behind the scenes.
- Few cons: Huge tail, get a fender eliminator kit. A bit on the heavy side but you wont notice it at all while riding as the weight disappears while riding. The TFT screen is amazing but gets fingerprints and smudges easily. Get a screen protector for that.
Overall very happy with the bike. Its the perfect blend of practical and fun, and probably one of the best bikes for riding with a passenger. If you like tech, this is it.
2023 f 900 r or 2023 Aprilia Tuono 660?
@@thevances5780 that's what i was thinking? Lol
I'm going to test ride one. I'm sure I'll end up buying it. For me, I don't really care about the speed. I'm over 50 now and getting back into riding after a long time. I think this bike is for blokes like me. We just want to cruise around in style and look a bit cool doing it.
Just bought a 22 exclusive and I love this bike so much. Never knew how much I’d love cruise control and heated grips until I had it. So much tech in the bike that I forget about some of it when people start asking about it.
I’ve had this bike for over a year now, and I can totally say your assessment is on point. It’s down on power versus the competition but has the tech and fit and finish typically only seen on top model bikes. It’s a premium middleweight naked at a price most can actually afford, that’s why I like it. I don’t like to feel like I’m riding on a plastic heap, same sentiment applies to cars. I love small cars but hate that most small cars feel like shit inside. I think what you’re sensing, Chase, is that the bike allows the rider to be a complete slack ass in their riding. You really don’t have to be in some specific gear or rev range to feel any pull from it since the torque comes on at a really low rpm. It makes for a chill commuter but also means you aren’t actively engaged in the bike trying to stay in that sweet spot. It IS very robotic in that sense. Additionally, I think if you had some twisties to take this bike on, it’d make more sense to you on what it’s purpose is. It isn’t nearly as flickable as an 890 Duke or Monster, but it tracks and holds a line extremely well and instills tons of confidence in the corners. Also, that low down torque really comes into its own in the twisties as you can practically have little throttle going into a corner, then just open her up on exit without the engine being lugged down too hard, it’ll pull you out without much fuss. It won’t set your hair on fire in straight lines and indeed, highway pulls are not its thing, but taking it into the mountains and keeping it in the mid range is 👌
Did you purchase the one that unlocks a special race mode (tube ) you had to get it fully loaded to get this option . I'm curious how that mode reacts. I almost got a f900r fully loaded but ended up getting a 21 monster 1200s
Glad I was able to accurately asses this one man. As you could probably tell in the video I had a bit of a rough time explaining it so it's great to hear from someone with experience.
It would be nice to tell us with what you changed it and how compares :) Thanks
@@akuin811 ah, nice! Ya, I’d say if there’s anything that pops up more often than any other “wish” for my bike is if it had just a little bit more power, something around 120 would be perfect, so I imagine the Monster 1200 suits you very well! Not sure what you mean by “race mode” but I know “Dynamic Pro” and maybe Dynamic (?) was only offered as an option and had to spec up to get it, is that what you mean? The bike also has a lap timer onboard and I think that actually comes standard? But the Dynamic mode definitely makes the bike feel more alive and less “sedate” haha. The throttle is more reactive and it could be a placebo, but I feel the exhaust also crackles and pops more while on Dynamic (I have the Akra Carbon slip on). Dynamic Pro just means you can customize a setting to set the bike exactly as you wish. I set mine on “Dynamic” Throttle with everything else set on the standard “road” mode so I still get all the traction and aids but with a bit more life out of the throttle 👌
@@chaseontwowheels Totally! Ya I think it can throw people off because it looks and feels like a top end bike, but without that top end power and rush. I think it fills a great niche that really hasn’t ever been addressed till recently. The Aprilia 660 line also comes to mind as well, as Premium spec bikes but middleweight size and power.
BMW engineers build their bikes to last and no not kill you...Weird
22:12, you need to turn off traction control and ABS in Dynamic mode for it to feel more direct, and even then the stock throttle mapping will mute things a bit. In Dynamic it still has wheelie control active, only Dynamic Pro mode allows the front wheel to come up, if configured to do so.
That bike is typical BMW... LOADED. Out the door that one new is about $13,500. You will never find a bare bone stock BMW. Your have to order one and wait months.
You say you researched the bike? You don't know what you're on! Look at other professional reviews! I'm not even a Beemer fan but I know about this bike! Try looking up MSRP on CycleTrader and add $1,500 on new models for all the bullshit dealer charges. Then you have an idea of real world pricing.
Right now in my area there's a loaded used 2021 and they're asking 10k. The new 2021 is 12k. Again, the later is not OTD pricing.
Your in road mode. That bike has Dynamic Pro mode. Use that to get full performance. I guarantee that bike does more than 100mph on the highway! Lmfao!
That bike has rear ESA suspension as does the XR.
It's a heavy bike for what it is. NO naked bike is worth a shit on the highway. Try holding 100mph on your beloved MT-07 for 5 minutes! I owned one. 70mph-80mph is doable, but even that wears on a body after half an hour. Naked bikes are not highway cruisers. But I can do 100mph on my Ninja 650 all day. Lmao.
Sorry. I'm calling bullshit on this review.
Hi Chase, as the owner of a "Style Sport" variant of F900R for the past 4 months as well as coming from a 08 R6, The F900R catches alot more attention on the streets (with OEM engine spoiler and Evotech Tailtidy installed) as compared to my R6 which almost everyone has. I would call it the BMW Z4 of motorcycles. A gentleman's Roadster. No loud exhaust notes, No need to wring its neck to sky high Rpm for power, but still performs when you wants it to while keeping your rubber side down with all the tech. If I were to pick between a R6/R1 and a F900R, My heart would go for the R6/R1 while my head will pick the F900R. Would sacrifice top end performance for practicality. Btw, where i'm from, the maximum speed limit is
The longer trip version is the F900-XR. Looks like a Tracer. Kinda falls between the Tracer 700 and 900. $11.6k I believe. Rode one last year at an event. Pretty decent bike. I'm 6'2" and I felt pretty comfortable on it. And ya, I don't remember it being super exciting. It just worked.
I own this bike , I commute from the ‘burbs into central London plus fun in the summer etc and I love it. It’s fun enough to make your commute more enjoyable but also relaxed enough to not feel like an effort like a street triple RS or something , it might be a touch down on power but the quality and tech, plus dealer support , in my opinion ,makes it the better choice for me personally . Quick shifter not great at low speeds
Gotta keep it in Dynamic tho;)
Recently my dealer replaced the clutch of the bike under warranty and oh man the quick shifter changed it drastically and it works like a charm in lower rpm as well try connecting your dealer.
You haven't really pushed it I the turns. I hear it likes to be there. I won't ride it over 100 mph. I like the quality of BMW bikes. They last a long time. Put an exhaust on it. It's for older guys. Like me. As you get older you want different things in a bike. I don't want a Harley or a hyper bike (what you like). I have a TL1000S that I still love, but the TL will hurt you if you dont respect that throttle as i found out when I first got on it. I wound up looking directly at the sky. As a young guy, I didn't need to go any faster then. Love the beast especially how it sounds with a Yoshi RS3. But i don't want to ride it like i stole it any more. I want something a little sporty and maneuverable with enough punch to get me out of trouble... (that might be an issue on the highway from what youre saying.) Don't know. I'm 54 and think this might be for me.
You nailed it; it doesn't scare you. I started riding 3 years ago at 47 years old, first bike was a Kawi Vulcan S. Great starter bike, but too slow after ~7,000 miles. Traded that for a 2021 MT 09 which I absolutely loved, but just taunted you to ride it in what could be considered an unsafe manner. Traded the Mt09 (put ~8,000 miles on it) for 2021 F900R and it's just smooth, all the tech I wanted (cruise control, heated grips, IMU). The build quality is top-notch and it rides soooo good. I do miss the rowdy nature of the MT09, but now don't feel like I may do something to kill myself every ride.
No experience +30yr old, looking for my first city bike. My 20's self wants to start with CBR 650R, but the F 900R may help to maintain my current lifespan. Do you regret?
@@RomeoBravo Haha, F900R is a great bike, but got traded in for a '22 MT09 SP. Couldn't resist the call of the CP3 motor. Of the two, three BMW would be the better starter bike.
Have you pushed it on the open road? What sort of speeds can it do on long overtakes?
OC: I really wish the 2021 MT-09 had a dash like this.
Or just something I didn't need reading glasses to read
I know you did this ride a couple years ago but the key to the BMW quick shifter is holding the throttle at a constant position not letting off at all, then it's smooth.
This looks to be aimed at people like me who want a bike to commute to work mon-fri 12 months of the year. But don't want to sell their soul and go for an Adv bike to do road only riding.
Yeah comments on the bike are spot on!
I own one and yeah there maybe a bit if disconnect, I went from a Hypermotard it just wants you to rip your arms off this is way tamer. It has all the tech and reliablility.
I think the feeling your missing and most people that ride more for the sport and less for utility is character. I feel that a lot of great all around daily usable bikes get bad review because they lack it, but gain a great following from those that use them long term. I think many standard configuration parallel twin and 4 cylinders fall into this category. The boxers, v twins and 270 degree parallel twins often have the character people seek. I'm still riding the FZ6 that I bought new in 2007 that got lackluster reviews and still love it. I've not found anything worth trading it in for and decided to keep it even after I save and get a new bike. Character will be a factor in my decision, but not the deciding one.
i have a 05 fz6. same boat as you
‘07 FZ6 was my first bike! Such a good choice.
Glad I watched this video - I was going to wait for the new F900GS to see if the motor would be adequate. I shall move on.
How? It is made in China, which nowadays is where almost everything is made I'm glad BMW didn't jack up the price!
I have almost 9000 miles on my F900R all highway miles. Rode from Providence RI to Baltimore MD in one day, two up all the way from Manhattan where I picked up my buddy. Never went slower than 110mph and had an absolute fucking blast
OC: From the video, as much as I could tell, the bike has short gears, power is distributed evenly (more or less) along the entire rpm range and is slowly released via ECU. That only could deprive you of power. In the highway section, you were complaining about not able to shift down as you were already at the top of the rpm. I think that explains why you weren't able to enjoy the bike. May be there's a setting you overlooked. Try that. Thanks for the video. PS: I'm not an expert on bikes, it's just my humble opinion.😊
3:36 that adjustable rear shock is stock, and is the lower option of the two factory suspension options available. The upgraded rear suspension is electronically adjustable for both damping and preload, BMW calls it Dynamic ESA.
I've just ordered a 2022 SE with the higher seat and bar option, basically for the deal I got, no other manufacturer came close to giving the equipment, power and torque that this bike offers. I'm in the UK and it's 105bhp and 92nm of torque, in the US, I'm sure you only get 99bhp? I've also found out that the electronics only deliver the full whack in the last 20% of the throttle, so if you aren't using all the throttle it can feel muted. Once you know this, it supposedly transforms the bike and it comes alive.
are you pleased with bike so far?i m seriusly thinking for this bike, but with the dynamice mode, couse from what i read,it is not so powerfull to the simple road mode.i d like to see your bike with the higher handlebars and seat...any instagram?
Chase, love the first rides. I wouldn't mind if you spent a little more time showing dashing options for the "Techy" bikes.
We could probably handle that. Would you want to see it as first person in a gopro or with another camera that we can make sure you can see the dash better?
@@chaseontwowheels If you are going to attempt it I'd recommend doing both at the start and seeing which turns out better. I would assume another camera would bring better quality. But honestly as long I can see it and hear you explain it will be another step up.
12:42 the brake indicator is measuring deceleration in meters per second squared. On the app it will also read out acceleration and deceleration G-forces, and will show you anywhere on your route that the electronics intervened (ABS or DTC).
Underpowered. Only 85hp at the wheel 👎. The competition is 110-115hp at the wheel. Not worth it.
OC: Not all bikes are made to be love affairs or drugs. Some bikes are made for a purpose and a utility, generally to get you from point A to point B on your day to day. I think this bike has more in common with say....the Honda NC750. Big bore parallel twins seem to be so linearly balanced that whatever eccentricities there are to other engine styles, they simply melt away under a wave of predictability.
I wonder how well this bike actually sells in the States, where bikes aren't as popular for commuting. Europe, however, probably sells tons of these to folks who are just trying to commute to work.
30:05 what tech does the MT-09 have that the BMW does not? Where I live all MT-09's are marked up at least $1k over MSRP by the dealers, so the BMW ends up being the better value.
best bike for the money in my opinion and best dash in the moto biz
I traded my 2015 FZ07 for a 2020 F900R. Loved the FZ07 except I wanted ABS. The F900R actually feels slower than the FZ07 in road mode, but feels better after switching to dynamic mode. Also, had to add an Akrapovic and fender eliminator. Now it looks and sounds better. Enjoying the BMW.
I picked one up coming from a Ninja 650 as my first bike. I was looking for something like the Ninja, a good, all rounder since I commute on it, canyon carve, and mile munch via road trips. I looked into the Z900 and MT09, but while those bikes beat the F900R on power and outright hooliganism, I chose the Beemer for its touring potential with cruise control, heated seats, and quality saddlebags straight from the factory. Also comes with some upmarket equipment like Brembo brakes and steel braided lines and overall a nicer fit and finish. I feel for what you get, it’s a great value. I don’t expect everyone to love the F900R, no bike does that, but it suits my needs flawlessly. Enjoy the bike, bud!
I was looking into the 2020 F900R. Mark ups were $4k from BMW. So I went with the MT07 at MSRP. So unfortunate that the mark ups were so high for the f900r.
I feel the f9r is for the person who doesn't need the spunk of the s1r, It's a solid commuter with all the tech most other bikes in it's class don't have.
Coming from all Yamahas and an R6 just prior to having this, I love my BMW even more than the R6.
Fully loaded, (I wouldn’t consider a base anything, ever.) just such a usable bike. I’ve gotten to a point where I don’t want to get racked every time I hit a pebble. Going 180 is fun, but also just going 75 with your arms crossed is so much better than wrist and back pain.
I drive a luxury car, I wanted to finally match with a luxury bike. Just like the car I have, it’s muted and elegant, quiet and wafty, but it can do exactly what you ask in attack mode. It’s just a direct German feel versus a feral SS Japanese feel. Only EVER use the quickshifter above 8K RPM. That’s what it’s meant for, period.
Also, being my first naked, I can finally ride without earplugs. The R6 windscreen was a nightmare without crouching. I have an expensive AGV and it’s whisper quiet up to about 90 on the BMW. I can actually USE MY SENA AGAIN. The newer bikes include connectivity, where the screen is the middleman for your phone and Sena. You can change music, get turn by turn directions, make phone calls. Even the $25k tourers use the same switchgear. It’s refreshing and calms my FOMO.
I love my grunty little techy bike. It’s much harder to steal than an R6, has an OEM alarm that arms itself, and generally makes me feel better. The compliments and rubber-necking is also a small bonus. That badge on the side makes people wonder.
Tldr: techy, safe, understated, flashy. My thing.
Edit: I rode this bike from Denver to NYC and back, bought the OEM bags and it was amazing the entire way. Cruise was vital, or course. I also bought the PureBoxer jacket, which actually caught a lot of wind, strapping it to the back of the bike solved that issue. Great bike, great ride.
For those who don't know the truth about this BMW, it has a Chinese designed and built engine, by Loncin, thus the "low" price. 😉
The service intervals are much lower than it's competitors, have less power and have a few problems regarding the gearbox, oil leaks and a couple more, related by those who own one.
Of BMW, only the logo and a couple of little things, the rest is outsourced from other chinese companies. 😅
Oh, and for those who say that nowadays everything is made in china and the Japanese bikes are the same, they're not in the same situation as mentioned above because at least, the japanese manufactures, while having factories all over the world, they design and build their own engines in their own factories (at least some of them though 🙄), whether is in China, India, Thailand, Italy, USA or Japan. 😉
lol
The Engine is engineered in Berlin and Build under BMW QM at loncin. Its as Chinese as an iphone which is assembled in China at foxconn.
Technology is mostly from Bosch. Assembly is in Berlin.
He finally showed the camera car!!
Every video I’ve looked for the camera car, finally
Took this it to the highway. It hit 100-110 with ease. It tops out at about 135mph. 140 is possible just takes a bit.
Compared to the Ducati Monster it just pulls at 130 which is insane. So the BMW is great for someone looking at a medium based speed and comfort. You ain’t going 160 on it. But 100-125 no issue. So it ain’t slow.
I testrode the F900XR model (the adventure/tourer twin of this F900R) and my feelings where EXACTLY the same as you describe here. It's a very good motorcycle, it has all the little things I would want on a bike (cc, dash, quickshifter, heated grips, good brakes, ..) but it didn't excite me at all. No butterflies in the stomach at whatever speed or gear or mode. I was looking for a comfortable, safe commuter that I could take my girlfriend on occasionaly. The F900XR would give me exactly that on paper, but as soon as I rode it, I didn't want it anymore. Then I rode some Ducati's and the rest is history.
Yeah dude, "comfortable, safe commuter with two up" just screams Ducati.
.... because the parallel-twin Motor in it is Chinese, by Loncin Holdings Ltd., .... everything else about the bike is German, except the Engine.
I would prefer a Made in China bike with German motor, than vice versa.
Karect .
Its a BMW Motor thats engineered in germany and Build in China under bmw. Its Not a loncin engineered Engine.
Thats exactly what apple does basically.
Even tho the comment is 2 years old wanted to clarify this missinformation.
@@CKO_807 OK
I feel like this bike is for the person that wants to step up from an entry bike. They get a premium bike with less chance of twitch throttle loss of control.
There’s a faster bike beyond the F900r.
So if BMW made this thing absolutely perfect with the best combination of technology and speed, then why would people ever wanted to buy the s1000 r? It is that simple.
Glad you finally managed to get it for a test, thanks! BTW, the engine is built in China, that's why they are able to sell it for such an affordable price. Also, if you turned on the "dynamic pro" mode it'd become more responsive apparently. Cheers
Well then, I guess I’ll skip the BMW section next time I’m shopping for a bike.
@@DirtyWellington I actually bought F900XR (the faired version). Excellent bike and engine in particular! No one should be concerned about Chinese component anymore. In this day and age things are made everywhere in the world (globalisation!). Cheers from Ireland.
@@daniilrusanau5849 I know most of the time it’s unavoidable, but I try not to buy stuff that’s made in China. It’s not that I don’t think that they can make a good product, it’s more about the theft of intellectual property and the use of slave labor.
The 2022s are made in germany
the fact that the bike seems to "just do whatever you ask it to do and absolutely nothing else" seems to be present across all BMWs
maybe they target an older crowd than other manufacturers, like the midlife crisis man not really sure
other than that their bikes seem pretty good value for money not gonna lie, at least their cheaper ones, once you go past the f900 series it seems to go out of the window
oh well typical euro product i guess, nails certain aspects and falls very very short in others
Nobody builds a display better than European manufacturers. Love my GSX-R1000r, but its 1989 display is just AWFUL
These full color TFT displays are beautiful but they're often plagued by issues especially when left out in the sun for extended periods.
Also, yamahas new TFT dashes are wonderful too especially on the MT09.
I personally think honda has one of the best displays right now, theirs looks exactly like what they use in MOTOGP.
But I digress, I think the perfect display is a mix of analog and digital, akin to that of kawasaki's z900rs.
Had a test ride today to compare it with the XSR900, Completely different bikes but the F900r felt like a learner bike to me. Had a strange weak feeling although it is a great bike on paper.
I thought about buying one of these but only thing holding me back is the lack of after market products for this bike.
Like your highway section, but shame you don't visit the twisty roads just N of you to show us how bikes perform on fun roads - means I have to go to other channels to understand fun ride feel.
Totally agree this bike is awesome on twistys
OC: Sounds like it needs a pipe and a tune. Maybe it's just too drama-free BMW all the way around. Not as spicy as a MT-09 or Speed Triple, and maybe it doesn't have to be
5:13 it is lean angle, the IMU doesn't read it while you're not moving. Using the included BMW connected app, it will also record lean angle along your route so that you can see how far you leaned at each corner on a ride.
We don't have a ton of power as he passes everyone
Because of body position, would you say it feels comfortable or uncomfortable riding long distance? Is there too much weight on your palms that it will hurt riding after a while? Does your back posture bend uncomfortably?
So the Yamaha MT 07 with 25 less horsepower and 20 less torque is more fun because…it’s a Japanese motorcycle? I guess the only parallel twin that’s “weird” is the one not made by Japan. A good reason I won’t spend another penny on a Japanese motorcycle.
No matter how many motorcycle reviewers I find on UA-cam they all seem to be pro Japanese and illogically trash anything from BMW with the typical stuff. Maybe UA-cam will one day recommend a moto vlogger that’s impartial to brands and speaks to validity of the motorcycle and keep their personal bias to themselves?!?….yeah probably not😔
60 in 5th gear? I rode the 2022 today and I was going 50 in 2nd
Chase should really review the 2020 bmw S1000XR i think that would tick all your boxes. I get it with this f900r. Ridden one myself. It feels to clinical. I have a 2016 s1000xr now.. That def does not 😂
Chase, That is a standard BMW quick shifter, if you try to quick shift up with partial throttle it will feel jerky. You have to really hold the gas at least over half way open to get the smooth quick shifts (the more open the better lol). Good riding.
Chase, this is the first review I’ve encountered with you. I loved the first 15-20min of the video but then you spent 10mins or so ripping BMW for delivering a 10 out of 10 street bike. You honestly were complaining over nothing. You couldn’t even put your finger on it.
I saw the way you narrowly missed a vehicle or two, the driving over roadway lines and hard deceleration. I don’t believe any street safe motorcycle will suit you. You need to be on a raceway Bro; hit the track and get that adrenaline to pumping.
I honestly believe you didn’t favor the bike 100% due to the branding. This is by far one of the best builds I’ve encountered for the price range. Maybe in ten years you’ll have a different point of view.
Please drive safe, commuters have little respect for motorcyclists due to drivers like yourself.
Well said ! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
This bike seems to appeal the more mature crowd that is more concern about creature comforts while being safe on the road.
Chase, the scale with the brakes tells you your deceleration in m/s².
I've had mine for over a year.
The difference between "road" and "Dynamic Pro" mode is night and day. Mine has an SC Project pipe which sounds amazing. It's a bike that just let's you ride like an utter dickhead, because it's just so confidence inspiring.
I rode everything in the class before getting it, and although it's not the most flashy, it was by far and away the best all rounder.
Interesting. I wonder if the pipe opens it up?
@@chaseontwowheels also, the quickshifter is infinitely smoother on the upshifts. I didn't remap, but it is a model specific system from SC Project. It also keeps full Euro 5 emmisions rating. An expensive system, but worth it.
BMW always throwing that gps holder on every bike gets old…. Never see anyone with the actual nav unit
Really seems like a more premium, less hooligany MT-07.
I’m torn between this and the MT-07. I need a beginner bike but own a 2023 X5M Competition. 😅
In a nutshell, it's all about the target of riders it was designed for. No it's not a track bike, yes it's not the perfect bike (because that does not exist) bit it's pretty good for the price tag.
Its all about personal preferences and expectations. Im trading my 2021 Ducati Monster for this BMW in new grey painting next month. It feels like its exactly what Im looking for:)
The new monster 950 is the one bike in the 900 naked class that I have not ridden and think I might choose over my 2021 F900R, but the Ducati hadn't been announced when I ordered my BMW. What didn't you like about it?
@@PMitchell106 The bike is not bad thats for sure. Its quick, light but its more like a toy for me. Im looking for more practicality instead. The v2 engine is nice but it lacks of smoothness and flexibility. There is a tons of heat blowing onto legs. Sound is not that much inspiring for me too. The look - I have improved it a lot by installing the belly pan, but I still cant get used to front headlight. Another thing is that for the same money Youre getting a compeletly bald motorcycle comparing to f900r.
@@7oyful Thanks for the reply, really useful info. When I ordered my 2021 F900R, it was the only thing in this class that was euro5 compliant and had a full suite of electronics and a wide range of optional extras. Since then the rest of the field has caught up, but after riding the MT09, the Z900RS, XSR900, and 2022 Indian FTR, I would still pick the F900R for my daily ride.
A few small things to be aware of on the BMW from an owner's perspective:
Quickshifter is not smooth on upshifts from first to second or second to third unless near redline at wide open throttle. All downshifts are smooth and satisfying, and upshifts to 4th, 5th, and 6th are always fine.
The cornering headlight is nice, but the corner element is a bit less intense than I imagined, the headlight itself is excellent though.
Ride modes pro is great to have, but keep in mind that "Dynamic Pro" is just a customizable configuration of "Dynamic", it is not a higher power mode and will not be more any more responsive than Dynamic.
The rear ABS tends to intervene earlier than most people want, even in Dynamic mode. It can be turned off, but not independently of the front ABS.
The engine runs best on 87 octane (US/AKI) as recommended by the owner's manual, a lot of people who insist on premium fuel have cold starting issues.
Some 2020's had clutch issues, but for most of the 2021's, they've switched to the clutch used in the 850GS.
@@PMitchell106 Thank You for the info too. Its good to hear that its still the one for You out of the competition. Monster's quickshifter also doesnt work that well from first to second gear. I heard that its very similar in both those motorcycles. The headlight in Ducati is not what I was expecting also. It has lens instead of reflector so I was counting on more but its not impressive at all. I bet that f900r lighting is much better.
The quick shifter is clunky because it is a parallel twin. Quick shifters are always clunky on twins vs triples and inline 4 cylinders. I rode this bike last year and really liked it. It was very comfortable and the tech is awesome!
I love the bulk about this bike, After 110 it still had power not sure what you were talking about
Was gonna buy this bike in red but markups were $4k. No thanks!
That’s because red is on option, and will have the premium package at $2500 and probably other goodies.
Food for first bike?
Try R1250R if You need some pep.
Coming from Kawasaki Concours with 155hp which I traded for F900R, on the first ride from dealership back home, I felt strange and kinda stupid…. Next ride after a couple of days I began feeling warmer about the bike… After another couple of days I fell in love with this thing. Mine flies! Sound is great! My kid and I were riding together, plenty of power with two of us plus we came to conclusion the ride is really comfortable! Brakes are superb! The looks is great ! Really nice bike which makes you feel really nice… my humble opinion.
and for $4000 les you can get a z400 that is probably just as useful
Also more reliable
for 400$ you can get a bike that is more useful and more reliable
Who TF goes close to 200 km/h on a naked bike then complains about the wind ? Give your balls a tug.
Maybe its just... safe? Like cause it doesn't want to kill you
OC: so glad you did this review. I saw this bike about a year ago and wondered why no one was talking about it. Seemed like it should have been the best in class on paper and looks. But I think you laid out maybe why no one is talking about it a year later.
7:05 @chaseontwowheels you are 5,10 inches = 129,54 mm ???
The problem is that all its competitors are triples, inline fours, or V-twins.
My friend works in BMW motorrad, he brings me different BMW bikes to try on. I tried R9T, F850GS, R1250GSA, F900R, all BMWs are boring as hell. (I ride a Monster 796 for 8 years now.)
Until he invite me to a track day test ride of S1000RR, S1000R and S1000XR. That's it, I bought S1000RR. For BMW bikes, only S1000 family felt enjoyable to me.
I tryed it it is too expa sive with unnecessary equipment that lack fun factor. Settled with kawasaki z900
you need to turn of the "nanies" like tractioncontroll and autobalance or what the call it. then change slipon and get dynamic.. then it feels more like a bike. And u need to drive it more aggressive.. i wakes up at about 4500 rpm,, i had a firestorm and its a big diff in paralelltwin and vtwin., so u have to drive 9r like a cbr. rev harder.. my op.
OC comment - I think all the tech and refinement just gets in the way of the riding experience on a light or middleweight bike. You'd be damn happy you had all that safety stuff on a 170hp monster machine or a perfectly balanced engine in a massive touring bike, but with 100hp on the street you want to be able to use all of it without a ride-by-wire throttle or traction/wheelie control module telling you "no".
The purpose of the technology is to act as a safety net, and none of us got into motorcycling because it's safe. The F900R is an objectively better motorcycle than an MT-07, but objectively better motorcycles have less character flaws to learn to love. They become better transport solutions and worse motorcycles as we think of them.
You know I ride to separate myself from technology, looks like your driving the camery of motorcycles, those things come loaded, it would make old luxury cars look like a Kia... but who wants to drive a camery
First of all the looks, I like the looks (except the exaggerated tail thingy ) but the thing I like most is your honesty especially the part where you say motorcycling is a gut thing. Yes, we know that BMW is from Germany and those people are the best when it comes to technology and so this is an example of too much technology going south. Hell, you build a 900cC bike and then spend a lot of money on micro controllers to give it the character of a 300cC bike, I think that that's cruelty.
Hurts when ppl rev cold bikes
MV agusta 1000 Brutale next plss
Love the first rides
RE cramped they will put a higher seat on it, no extra charge according to their site.
OC. My takeaway is that you're saying this bike is boring like a Honda. It's a tool to do a job and it does exactly as expected.
My other takeaway is that I'd rather a little more gritty bike like the MT07. I'll take that cost savings to have a bike that has a little more umph in the engine.
@chaseontwowheels can you please try Honda cb1300 super four. It has amazing machine. Want your reviews. Love your videos
Heck yea, ive been digging the XR but this is close
Not sure why bmw makes it so hard to get into neutral, I can Only smoothly get into neutral when the bike is rolling, At Dead Stop its impossible to switch into Neutral
OC- might consider it for my first bike. Seems like you don't have to worry about killing yourself and enjoy some old man tech lol
Hi Camera car! :D
from what I can tell it seems like the torque is not extreme compared to the FZ07. Just guessing from the video
Great motorcycle
Anyone 6´ riding this bike? Im considering buying it but am def going to test ride it to make sure im not too tall.
Chase please please please do a first ride for the new BMW S1000RR please. Thank you so much!
This colorway is so so boring
Whooo boy chase is getting THICCC! double cheeked up on a WEDENSDAY!
Use Dynamic pro mode. I realized this it removes full wheelie control and you get pure power and the throttle becomes very responsive.
Have you done a first ride on the scout bobber? If not I have one you can use and I'm in the area.
Was this in road mode or something instead of sport mode?
i was looking at this i have a mt 07 on paper this looks like the perfect upgrade
it sounds like you like it, but it's missing maybe 20 horsepower?
9 grand is base price. A fully loaded one after taxes is closer to 15
