Wish other manufacturers would take a lesson. Great review, chops! I'd buy one!
No one REALLY understands why they keep demanding TFT screens, other than they are addicted to phones. What about the future of TFT? Are they really that durable? Do they really seal out pouring rain, small hail, baking sun rays, extreme dust and grit, high winds as long as an electro-mechanical needle? Doubt it. Plus how long into the future before bikes become unserviceable by consumers? How long before they become a two wheeled sealed iPhone? I don't like the way things are going. For some dumb reason the riding community and journalism communities keep demanding all the tech. It's about all reviewers talk about. Spend 10 minutes talking about all the tech bikes have, nevermind the riding experience. And don't say it'll never happen. Farmers can't fix their own tractors anymore. Even if they are in perfect mechanical running order, without a million dollar computer to connect to 1's and 0's, the computer won't allow the thing to run. "Contact the dealer/manufacturer". Fork over $$$$$$$$$.
I'm 34, 6ft4", ~100kg and I got my full licence about 6 months ago. I'm still cruising around on my 390 Duke and I love it but I am window shopping for a bigger bike. I don't think I really need a bigger bike when I am commuting but when I am on the open road I feel a little bit like a gorilla on a tricycle. I used to do motorcross when I was in high school but I only have a couple of years of experience with road riding. I'm looking at bikes like the Duke 790/890 and MT09 but I recently stumbled across this bike, the F900R, and it caught my attention. The 890 and MT09 scare me a bit because they really seem like hooligans. The F900R seems a lot more civilised while still being able to have some fun. I think the F900R would be a lot better for longer distances, like if I wanted to go away for the weekend. It has cruise control, attachment points for panniers and I love that massive screen. Do you think this would be a slightly gentler step up from a 390 Duke or should I just get the 890 Duke R and be done with it? Another option would be the 790 Adventure but that is going into a whole new style of bike.
I think you should really test ride this bike as i feel for your height, the footpegs might make your legs feel cramped as i have heard this from only taller riders. Otherwise this is the perfect All round bike i would go for but if not then definitely the ktm 990 duke. Anything else is not as good in technology, fit and finish and design. But the 990 duke is definitely more expensive. I would have also taken the suzuki gsx s1000 but its more expensive despite poor tech and a pretty old dash.
the f900 is probably a great option for you. I'm not sure about other locations, but in the german speaking world, there are options in the configurator for tall people. you can have a higher seat added and a higher handlebar, which is perfect for very tall people such as yourself. i'm 6ft2 and I had an F900 with those options. It was great !
Can give an update in how the quickshifter works with six months worth of running under the belt. It still sucks on the upshift unless you are absolutely hammering it. Downshift is fantastic at any revs. It's the best all round bike I've ever owned. Never fails to put a smile on my face because it just makes me feel like a much better rider than I probably am.
I think this is the fastest I've ever seen you fly through a little section like that!! And you truly blessed that cyclist with that twin eargasm too!! You know he was impressed. This bike looks addictive.
Great job, as ever, Lamb Chop. I’m personally much more interested in the f900XR, and I wonder if you’ll get to do a review of that model as well. I know they share most equipment, but the XR seems like it’s still a fairly different riding experience from the R. I’ve watched many reviews from riders and journalists from around the world, but none of them seem interested (or allowed) to ride the bikes at a spirited pace, so I’m looking to you for that.

About time BMW started looking at transforming their moulds. This actually looks quite nice, I do like how they have developed it towards other manufacturers models, like honda, Kawasaki and Suzuki.
Wow this bike came under the radar. I honestly didn't know that BMW had made this machine, obviously they want a piece of that middleweight naked market. Anyone looking for a bike in that category are now spoilt for choice 🙂. Loving these reviews Chops, great work buddy. 🙂👍
Test ride this and a Street Triple back to back today. Liked the Beemer but didn’t love it. The Striple on the other hand? Oh my word. I LOVED it. Not as practical for what I need but I don’t care. Amazing bike. Need to start saving!
I like my 800R, it’s quick enough for me and as you say using the gearbox properly, it can still entertain. I’ll try either this or the XR version on my next service, but can’t see me changing just yet.
Just got back from a test ride. I've still got a couple more bikes on the shortlist to test ride over the next week or two, but I think this might be the one. It's so damn good.
Surprising they included a steering damper, but not adjustable forks. Also, you wondered how they got it down to 8,600 GBP? Non adjustable forks likely saved them a few quid, and using pig iron (I assume, since it weighs so much more than it's competitors) instead of aluminium, etc definitely saves money.
Nice review - no room in my garage for this one as my Thruxton 1200 R ticks most of the boxes this one does and I think the motor has more character. BMW has more tech and probably a better traveler but I have a GS for that.
It's a good bike but I reckon this is the kinda of bike that everyone will forget about in 2 years time. the most exciting thing about it is the TFT and if someone wants a budget parallel twin they'll just get the mt07
Got one on order SE version. £109/month on pcp with free comfor pack (heated grips and keyless), can't be beaten for that money. Opted for high seat, high bars and mini flyscreen to fill that gap between the headlight and back of the dash.
Hey how do you like it? Thinking of buying one as a commuter. Honda is probably more reliable but I like the look of this bike and I think this factor is important
Chops.Quality video once more. Not only do i get all the tech info but also the banter to go with it. How do BMW get all that tech into their bikes for so little cost? The bikes a bargain'

Funny the way these "middle weight" 800-900cc bikes are now the "entry level" machines for full licence holders. They've taken over the mantle from bikes like the venerable SV650 and ER-6n/f . Have you got any drive on scales near you? You're dead right about the inconsistencies with manufacturers claimed weights, so a fully fuelled measurement would be a great addition to your reviews if it's easy to do.
Nice video, thanks 🙂 ..... seem like a decent machine ... love that dash, very tasty!! Not keen on the headlight or combined footrest hanger plates. I'll stick with my 790 Duke ... same output as the BMW but considerably lighter and comes with a better set of electronics as standard (BMW requires a £600 optional package to get it to the same level - but then more additional payments for more packages can take it further than the level of the 790).
I couldn't care less where the engine was made as long as it was manufactured up to the BMW standards. But I do realize that there are plenty racist out there who can't stand that it wasn't a white man putting his engine together (but they do like the lower price though) It's just sad and stupid.
The Wild One Yeah, must be racism..... it can’t have anything to do with how notorious the Chinese are with producing things with substandard materials to pocket the extra ten cents per item every time the quality assurance guy from Europe/USA steps out of the production area to take a shit or have a smoke.... you’re an idiot!

So is essentially what motor the Nuda 900R had in it? Dream bike by the way.
They are completely different engines
Hey Chopsie, have you had a chance to ride the F900XR yet? Would value your opinion of it. Cheers mate
I believe they skimped by having the engine made in China, not necessarily a bad thing but I would buy an MT09.
I couldn't care less where the engine was made as long as it was manufactured up to the BMW standards. But I do realize that there are plenty racist out there who can't stand that it wasn't a white man putting his engine together (but they do like the lower price though) It's just sad and stupid.
@@Darkest_Soul_187 It ain't exactly a cheap bike, BMW are paying low assembly manufacture cost and charging a premium price.
The Wild One
Yeah, must be racism..... it can’t have anything to do with how notorious the Chinese are with producing things with substandard materials to pocket the extra ten cents per item every time the quality assurance guy from Europe/USA steps out of the production area to take a shit or have a smoke.... you’re an idiot!
@@Rick_Sanchez_C137_ and yet somehow 75% of shit that you (or should I say your mom) owns was probably made in China. Oh yeah, don't know where you live but here in Europe we also take shit sometimes, despite our high standars. You just crap your pants I assume to bring in that top quality huh?
@@Darkest_Soul_187 Come on... don't play the racism card, that's really stupid in this subject.
Hi Mr Chops for what it's worth you again are the only 1 to has captured what sound the bike has got? Sorry to TMF & Bennetts cos they did not hmm, mic placement when will they learn? ATB Wayne.
Thanks Wayne!! :-)
all i want is traction control, but it's part of a $2000 package that adds a bunch of stuff i dont want like keyless
With absolute respect as genuinely respect your opinions, I cannot accept any comparison to any Japanese or European made equivalent as the F900R has a Chinese made engine. Only serious mileage will tell if they really are as well made.
That's what your dad said about Japanese bikes in the 1970's.
@@williambedell3470 My father, like me, was a prolific motorcycle collector up until his death 15 years ago. He bought just about all Japanese bikes over 250cc, triple two strokes and four strokes as they were imported to add to his UK, USA and European bikes as was so impressed with their engineering. I collected alongside him, now for 40+ years and think I know a little bit about them. I repeat, only time will tell if Chinese engines are OK, try stripping one down and then comment perhaps, I have.
I’m torn between this and the MT-09
is that a steering damper in front of the radiator?
What sort of RPM do you need to be at for the quickshifter to work without a jolt?
Was hoping this would be like the nuda 900 which uses a bmw motor
So where has all that lovely torque gone the husqvarna nuda 105hp but 100nm with a weight of 179kg. Is the the travesty of euro 5???
That bike was not made for hooning. I rode tested the older F800R and it was under-powered and underwhelming
Another great vid 👍👍
Love it
Hi chops 🇦🇺👍 good review
