- 2020 BMW F900R Review: It seems BMW have seen the success Yamaha has had with the MT-09 and wants a slice of that cake! That's my take on where the new for 2020 F900 R sits in the UK bike market anyway. I've been wanting to ride this cute looking bike ever since I rode it's sibling the F900 XR a few days ago and thanks to those nice people at Bahnstormer in Maidenhead, I've now had the chance!...here's how I got on in my first ride review...

Thank you for such a thorough evaluation of this bike! You are, refreshingly, the only reviewer who preferred this over its XR brother. Which makes me happy since I prefer the hunched streetfighter style.
I've been away for a while (your channel-wise, not prison. lol. Must be 2 years now!) and it was a pleasure to watch and listen to this video.
The information you give the viewers in your videos is phenomenal and very consistent.
Thank you very much and keep up the good work! 🙂👍
Where have you bee Rottie!! ...and it's good to have you back!! Boy do you have some catching up to do!!
Been waiting for this review ever since BMW announced the 900r! Great stuff!
I will never trade my S1000R Sport in for one of these parallel twins but I concede they probably make sensible ‘real world’ bikes. Another good first impressions review thanks.
Nice review as always. I must say that I am a fan of these new mid-weight BMW bikes. Thanks for reviewing them back to back!
Yes me too - and my pleasure!
Yay, a bonus vid! Thanks TMF.
Cheers James - I'm glad you spotted that! Normal service resumes tomorrow....
Thanks for that TMF, it's been a while since I left a comment. I've got my name down to test ride that bike in a few weeks time. I always enjoy ur vlogs😊
Good to hear from yo again Allen!
First class review as always Andy. Well done sir. Love both the XR and this naked version.
Couldn’t agree more on that blue colour, fantastic in the sunshine.
Those TFT screens are brilliant and I like the Matt effect on it, so you can see it in direct sunshine ☀️
Keep up the good @TMF. I will be watching. 👍👍
Cheers Gary!
Great review, nice bike.
Love the rev counter with the numbers getting bigger as you accelerate. Easily pleased.
Me too - I also like the way the rev limit (red line) increases as the engine warms....
Nice looking bike and after another great review, I am very much looking forward to taking one out for a ride.
My F800r was awesome, put 90, 000 kms on it it was absolutely flawless. Used it mostly for sport touring with the wonderful BMW luggage.
This looks really good and looking forward to a test ride. Currently on a R1200r (LC).
Ur reviews are excellent mate hat off
Thank you very much!
Thank you for the honest review. It’s a bike I’m interested in to replace my Honda CB500F, as I want more power but still a naked bike. I thought the written review in MCN was really negative, as they spent more time comparing it to the XR, that they’d previously reviewed, and talked about that more so it gave me the impression that they didn’t really have an open mind about the R. You and a couple of other viewers could manage to detach themselves from the XR and give an honest review whilst riding it, so I thank you. It’s defiant top of my list now, thanks to such a well considered review from yourself.
Good alround bike. Ta for review. Best, Pete.
Had test ride of the F900r yesterday. Had F800GT for last 3 years and was concerned about the forward lean on this bike. It instantly reminded me of a Street Triple I had years ago but the forward lean is not as agressive as the Street and it does not impact upon the wrists. The riding was effortless, the engine great and gear change flawless. Its a naked and considering I have a tourer I didnt think it was an issue even at 70 mph. Compared to the F 800GT its a completely different bike - leagues ahead and you can throw it around corners like a Street - and it can be very civil if you want it to. Agree with your comments TMF - only one complaint the seat is a plank - however easily resolved with a gel insert as the Bike is comfortable in standard set up. I am 6. 1 so will need a higher seat. Placed a deposit on the Bike after the test ride on the day. Recommended
A pop filter on your mic or a better one would be lovely please 🤩
Thanks for the advice!
Great looking bike.Well made, nice looking fast, comfortable and well priced!
Brilliant as usual 👍
Thank you so much 😀
Thank you for the review! Went to a local dealer today here in Dublin- they are so much more expensive here, unfortunately. That’s the downside of being on an island. Expensive delivery plus high VRT. Nonetheless,The bike is phenomenal for its money!
Looks good and sounds good. For me, the front end is missing something. Street Triple has the small screen / cowl which tidies up the interface between screen and bike which for me looks better. MT09 has an optional extra screen which deals with the same issue. Top drawer review again, thanks TMF.
Great ride 'with you' today. Great bike, I guess a Yeeehaaa says it all! It ticks almost all my boxes. If only it were shaft drive.
Keep up the good work!
I like the look of the old f800r with the square lights though
Good review Tmf good price for bmw like the looks .thanks from Danny
Cor! A nice sunny British day...iv forgotten what there like! It’s storm central in Devon this weekend ☹️
Four year old review and I'm glad you have a better microphone now. 😁
Good review thank you. If I was in the market I might be more inclined towards the R1200R and have the shaft drive.
The only minor issue I have with the R1200R is that its headlight is not LED. 2021 year model, maybe?
Not usually a fan of BMW's styling, but that's one nice looking bike👍
Agreed. Some of the better looks I've seen from BMW.
Bought a g310r on your recommendation last year and have to say that for my first bike it has been amazing. Due to a recal the bike has to go to my local dealer for new callipers next week. They have kindly agreed to let me test an f900r whilst they do the work, have a feeling I will be discussing trading the 310 towards one of these. Great review as always.
A cunning move by the dealer!
Shows how times have changed when we're calling a 900cc a cute little bike.
Shane Hepworth to be honest a lot of us now weigh 25% more than when we were 18 ..... so a 25% upgrade in engine caps is welcome !
@@maxflight777 It is the same with cars though. They have grown. When I started driving, 1100cc was very much the norm for an engine. And a modern Ford Fiesta is now bigger than a mark one Ford Escort (which was the Ford Focus of its day).
@@stevetaylor8698 What I like to call the golf factor. The original hot hatch is now an expensive family sized car, and the polo that sort of took over from it as the small car has now been replaced by the ... up? lol
I know with cars a lot of the size issafety things and such - my father in law has a CX3 and that car is friggin tiny inside, but it's a bit of a chonker outside thanks to all the safety stuff... plus the fake SUV styling (it's a mazda 2 really).
With bikes... I think it's the change from people buying them as cheap transport to weekend toys combined with emissions regs. Bigger engines for a while now have been the way to get more power past the pipe sniffers. In part I've noticed we're now far more focused on torque numbers than we used to be 20 years ago ... but I rather think that's probably just a result of their marketing campaigns to tell use why the penguin friendlier engines are as fun.
@@maxflight777 Funny, when I read that I grabbed the calculator!
there was a time that a 300cc was considered a proper big bike when 30hp were more than enough. I still think they are but what I'm about is that motorcycles are so expensive nowadays, a Honda cb500f is considered a learner bike it costs reasonably well but 10k for a motorcycle it's kinda a ridiculous price for just 2 wheels.
Now this is a BMW i could get into.. love it..
I went and road tested one of these on the back of this review and was very impressed. My current Z1000SX is a great bike but very serious, this while not as fast is definitely a lot more fun and the SE model I went for has everything on it. Pick it up Saturday and can't wait 🏍️
Congratulations on the new bike!
I've done a test ride on both the xr and r. Coincidentally I also did the ride on the r model on friday. I agree with the points you mentioned on both bikes. I'd like to add the xr I rode was the gold silver one with a normal windscreen and at speeds of 120/130 km/h I stil noticed wind buffeting.
Glad we concur!
Your gloves look like they are providing an answer from a Magic 8 ball!
TMF. This was a very interesting video. Like you , if i was changing my current machine i would give
this bike some consideration. For the shorter person it looks the goods.
The TFT display is something else. A lot of other companies need to learn from them
I agree!
Also the 2020 Kawasaki TFT dash on the Z900, Ninja 1000SX and a couple of others in their line up is a great and easy to read TFT. In fact some professional journo's are saying it's the best dash of them all [including BMW].
@@fyorbane I think that @TheMissendenFlyer should do a side by side comparison 😉😉😉
Quite nice looking they’ve held back on the geodesic barnacles for once... be a good allrounder I would think..
I somewhat miss the old F 800 S but this new engine is so much better. It’s interesting how many people have said they prefer the R over the XR. I rode the XR and there was a lot to like, but it won’t be replacing my Tiger 800, not yet. I need to ride the R.
The blue is very nice though I think Id prefer the model with the fairing and taller screen. Topbox and heated grips would make it a good urban, weekend tourer. Twins seem to be the default engine for this genre in terms of price point.
Who'd a thought a 900 was a learner's bike ;-) Nice bike and review, cheers TMF
...well only when restricted to 48hp of course....
Thought I’d accidentally peeked at the BMW website for a moment... all praise and worship !
Sorry Max - really struggling to find negative things to say about this one! Mew bikes are all pretty good but normally there's something to complain about....not so much with this one!
I’ll take the XR please, any colour. Good vid👍
Looking at one of these as my GSXS 750 isn’t really pillion friendly for the missus. Read the the mcn review which opted for the xr over the r but you have given a balanced view so thanks
My pleasure….
Great vid. But one thing that wasn’t mentioned was excitement. Pretty sure you won’t be able to ride a z900 or mt09 without mentioning excitement which has got to be a key ingredient for a naked
I am with you on the F900R definitely prefer it to the XR. Bought the F800GT last year and now wondering if BMW will bring out an F900GT not that I'm unhappy with the one I've got of course lol.
Very interesting bike. Not sure if it has enough of everything over the competition to put it at the front of the que but it"s definitely worth a look & owning a BMW supposedly has it's perks.
Especially the gas tank. BMW's website claims 56 MPG but that is more like something I'd expect to see on a 650-700 cc twin.
@@njminer Manufacturers MPG figures are always optimistic but being a parallel twin it should still be pretty good & something in it's favour over triples & fours.
Interesting that both this one and the 900XR appear to have a signicant part of the lower bodywork missing from the models shown at the shows and on BMW's press stuff. The bikes look completely different without it. Reviews awesome as ever 👍😊
Really? I shall have to look that up....
I would post pics and links but guessing copyright might be a minefield. I'm amazed BMW have removed the lower fairing from some markets as without it the bike just looks like some crappy KTM copy 😉
This would certainly be in contention as a second bike in Bibs garage...
That TFT is lovely. Discounting the Rocket 3 which is an anomaly, I reckon the bike of the year will be the Ninja 1000 SX, looks gorgeous! Sports tourers are making a come back.
I agree Rich. I think the current sports tourers take some beating, especially the Kwak.
I agree. The 2020 Kawasaki ninja 1000sx might finally be the bike to replace my 2000 Honda vfr800fi
@@michaelhart5886 Well said. I have fancied a Z100sx for a while. I currently have a Honda NC750DCT which is fab for commuting (100mpg regularly) but I want something with a bit more gusto to add to it, but not with the riding position of the full on sports bike. The Z1000sx seems the perfect bike.
Just got rid of my 2017 SX after 6 months. No problems with the bike just very bland and boring. Also had a cheap feel to it but I suppose the aren't the most expensive tourers out there.
If I were having a zed thou, it'd be the naked. Touring wise I'd take the Versys 1000 if I wanted a cheap but brilliant Kwak tourer. The H2 is way too expensive to insure in the UK, esp in London!
Another good first look video TMF. I think I prefer the XR model.
Have you ridden either?
@@TheMissendenFlyer
No TMF. I will have to visit my local BMW and maybe have a test ride on them.
...will be interesting to hear which you prefer! Surprised myself that I preferred the "R"
Lol mate 5'8", try being 5'3 like me, it's a hoot. Anyway, liking that tft screen, see what you think of the z900 one, that's a nice screen as well. Cheers, nice vid.
Here in the USA BMW basically has only 2 or 3 main option packages lumped together
Great video-This machine or the F750GS -I can't decide -as I'm a returning rider -I would like a bike that is going to keep me interested and is comfortable.
The only “cute” things I want in my life are the young woman making my fancy coffee drink and the puppy that distracts my wife from the purchase of a new motorcycle.
Great review!
Peace!
Like your style!
Hopefully the puppy will also distract your wife from your appreciation of the young coffee woman = unless of course they're one & the same woman?
....I wish!
@Outdoors Bushman It took four replies, but we got there
Shame they don't do the 900XR in this blue. What a lovely colour.
Hi TMF, really nice review of bike I've been patiently awaiting an upgrade to from BM. I think you made a mistake on the seat height. You would have flatfooted a 770mm I believe. Anyway maybe you can cleanup another spec that BM continues to miss-report: front end geometry. They have reversed the trail dimension on roadsters vs R900XR and also previously on R1200-1250Rs. vs RSs. I have never seen anyone call them on this but as you reported, the roadsters have sharper steering and this can't be possible with a longer trail than the more upright models. Maybe I'm mixed-up?....
nice looking bike. Small tank though. I hate having to fuel all the time
I’d have to ride it I’m a bit underwhelmed by all the silver and black plastic. The blue is very nice anyway
Got a 21 year old F650 BMW with a ROTAX engine. It's done 92000kms ;does not use oil between change [3500] still on the original clutch , cam chain .and tensioner , Why does not BMW still use Rotax..Also got a 01 RSV 1000 with a ROTAX and it's brilliant. BMW I think are making a mistake going for a Chinese engine just to save a few dollars.
stephen callil You ask a very good question!
It’s all about “economies of scale” now - sadly. I agree the rotax singles (and lovely 800cc twins) were “playful” trusted. It’s interesting to note that Rotax supply over 50% of the engines used on light and sport aircraft. They are so reliable and perform well for their weight.
Sadly, the economics of manufacturing in Slovenia and Austria mean that you can buy far cheaper in China.
BMW’s atrocious start with the decompressor issues on the Chinese “Loncin” single, haven’t deflected them from this path. It’s only a matter of time till your R1250GS has a Chinese designed and manufactured engine imho.
F650s were manufactured by Aprilia.
impact0r TOTALLY incorrect - google LONCIN G650GS single! It’s been made in China since 2008 ! A long time ! Do keep up
@@maxflight777 I'm correct. Aprilia was making the BMW F650 (the twin of Aprilia Pegaso which had slightly better tuned Rotax) at least till 2001, and OPs bike is from 1999 or older. Even though later on BMW started making f650 themselves, they still used whole lot of Italian Pegaso parts in it, and throughout the later lifecycle both bikes were very much joint effort.
Do catch up.
impact0r YOU are very odd !
My comment was a polite reply to Stephen who asked “Why do BMW not still use Rotax ?”
He asked a good question.
I explained; that China has featured more since 2007, (100% since 2008) due economics of scale...
Then you rudely, “but in” with some ancient history from 2001? I’m baffled by your contributions mate.
FFS we are not talking about the OP’s bike ... we are trying to discuss why Rotax have been ditched by BMW .
TMF don't talk bad about motorcycle because he is too polite!
Nice review Andy. Wonder if you would do a vid on whether PCP, HP or leasing is best option....
I'm a "save up the money then buy it" type of person - I hate paying interest of any type, so it would be a short video!
I like it, looks a bit like my mt09sp ....without the stupid number plate holder
hi ,great review as always, liked the bike.surprised you prefered naked one over the adventure, i,d love you to review z9oo to see what yoy think as i own one..i hate nit picking but the vid quality seamed below your usual ,maybe you tube cocking it up? no offence.
Strange....might not yet be fully rendered on YT as it's only just been published?
Love the new bikes bmw is putting out! But that thing under the seat annoys me just about as much as your mic setup. 😂
You need to get yourself a test ride on the Z900! Far better than the MT09 in my opinion.
I've test ridden the 2017 Z900 twice. Once for a town ride and once for a country road ride Decided not to have a 3rd as I would have bought it!
Get yourself over to Onyerbike and have a ride on their demo. No difference in the 2020 version other than a TFT screen, two riding modes (that it didn't need) and the seat is slightly higher.
Lovely bike . It reminds me of the honda nc750x. Or maybe it me. I am a bit of a honda buff myself😎
If there is ANY similarity between this bikes engine and the Nuda 900, its a win!!!
No, the Nuda used the old Rotax in a GS frame
Looking good, however I don't think I will every leave my BMW R NineT Option 719
I see no mention of heated grips on BMW Canada's F900R page as either standard equipment or optional extra, I suspect they might be standard equipment though.
I was really considering changing my BMW over for the F900R, even at a bit of a wait. But honestly, I'm glad I didn't. I traded over for the Street Triple and far prefer it. BMW did well, but there's something missing about this I just couldn't put my finger on.
Fair enough....
Nice bike, sat on the F900 and then the XR900, went back to sit for a longer spell on the F900, nice nice bike but its the Z900 2020 version for me, want to move away from parallel twins
Fair do's
Well done mr Flyer! I usually don't like blue bikes, but I must say, it looks really good on this one. Especially with those black bits, like the fork.
I like the xr the most😎😀👍
Been looking forward to this since its release, pretty sure this is the first English review..cheers missenden!
Really? Wow....
Nice
This one must have one of those basic screens that dont blur the speedo over 70mph ;o)
Would you swop your Street Triple for one? Didn't think so, but I do quite like the look of it. Suspect your microphone may need a slight adjustment.
I wouldn't swap my Street Triple for anything, not even a Street Triple!! ...and thanks for the advice...
Really helpful review, thanks. I picked up on your comment about an excellent next step for a new rider coming up from a smaller bike (CB500F in my case). I'd pretty much decided on a 2016+ Street Triple until I saw this last weekend. I'm about to test both the 2016 F800R and the new F900R. The new bike will be 40% or so more expensive than the older model but I'm thinking I might avoid another upgrade in a couple of years if I go for the new bike. My riding is weekend twisties and track based rider training. No commuting. Would appreciate your thoughts?
Go for the Street Triple!
@@TheMissendenFlyer leading with the heart (and probably ears as well! the triple does sound great..) thanks for the prompt response.
Sorry, not sure if I posted this earlier. Try closing the throttle when you change between driving modes and the bike will change automatically. It saves pulling the clutch at all!
Unless there is a demand for what bikes look like turning full lock left then please put the wheels facing same direction for walk arounds.. Good review btw.
Yes sir!
Great review as always 👍 Just wondering when are you road testing the new Kawasaki Z900? You mentioned you've heard great things about it.
It’s difficult for me to get hold of Kawasaki’s to ride, even though Kawasaki UK is literally only 5 miles away from me! ....don’t think they see any value in talking to me...and believe me I have tried!!!
@@TheMissendenFlyer Have you tried On Yer Bike in Westcot near Aylesbury, they are a Kawasaki dealer and will allow you to test there bikes. When you was in Haddenham the on the other video, which was also great! You was only about a 10 minutes or so ride away. I'm 40 and having passed my test last week, only had a DT125 when I was 15/16. Now looking to go and get a street triple or the z900. Although I've had aggravation, trying to get a test on a triple, due to there Insurance policy requirements of me needing my license for a year. Think there missing a trick on being able to sell new bikes to new bikers🤔.
Thanks for a distraction from Storm Ciara. Triumph just had the press on new Tiger 900s in Morocco. How long till there’s a TMF test of those to compare to the BMW 900s? Soon I hope!
...I actually got invited tot that launch which was very nice of Triumph...I'm hopeful for a ride ASAP but I have no current plans...but really looking forward to it as I am a huge fan of the outgoing Tiger 800 which I rode extensively last year.
At first glance, looks like the MT-09 ;)
Wow, jogging through the new BMWs with barely a breath taken O_O What is it with BMW and the small fuel tanks?
I enjoy your reviews! However - the audio on this one was noticeably worse than your previous programs. Did you change something? Change it back! :) Thanks!
I have a new mic to stop the buzzing that others complained about on the previous one and for this vid I moved it closer to my mouth as I thought the audio on the XR review two days previous was a little low....still more work to do.
The red is far more attractive to me after looking Into it. The price is surprisingly decent for bmw.
You prefer the blue or red color?
Great review - thanks but I was wondering what the servicing costs are like. Being a BMW I have heard they can be costly compared with, say, Honda.
In my experience they are no more expensive to run than any other bike.....
No, I’m too old for these kind of bikes. I no longer want an attack bike; that doesn’t mean I don’t like a bike that has a bit of power. Around 100-120 bhp is very nice and more than enough in the real world. I need weather protection in my country (NL) and I need an more or less upright seating position so the xr or similar bikes are preferred by me; in other words an allroad or a not to extreme sports tourer.
The tank capacity is too small for a bit of touring and commuting.
d zora maybe but then I’d buy the xr because that one already has a big screen and an upright seating position.
@@palantir135 Have to agree with you. I don't want an all singing/dancing 1200rt, so I have had to settle for a V-Strom 650 though it will never see an off road trail as long as I own it. My ideal bike would be a middle size engine, say 70hp, nice comfortable saddle with upright riding position, a fairing and luggage - a BMW r80rt!
steve taylor I’ve had the vstrom, brilliant do it all bike. I wanted a bit more power so I have a Honda cbf1000f sports tourer now. Also a very nice bike but I’m going to put some risers in the handle bar for a more upright position.
palantir135 you might need weather protection in NL (as they do in the UK).... but some of us live in warm climates and rather enjoy naked bikes ! 😀
Max Flight i agree but do you really need that amount of power in the real world. And those bikes drink a lot more fuel and then you need a bigger tank.
A lot off fluffy distortion on your voice TMF, that mic setup needs adjusting. Still a cracking vid and the usual informative and enjoyable review though!
Deadcat came today.more work to do....
@@TheMissendenFlyer awesome sauce. You've got some of the most professional videos on YT in my opinion mate, along with LCR and a few select others. Keep up the good work! 👍
nice looking bike, not often i say that for BMW, looks a little like the tracer
@TMF I think why your butt feels better on the R vs the XR is because you got slightly used to the seat testing the bikes a few days apart from each other 👍
Maybe...
About time you get around to reviewing a Kawasaki Z900. Very curious to hear what you think in comparison to this BMW and the other bikes you have reviewed in the same class.
Yes it's quite hard for me to review Kawasaki's as there are no really local friendly dealers, ironically Kawasaki UK HQ is very close to where I live in Bourne End (I rode through there in this video!) but for some reason they don't seem keen to lend me bikes....no idea why as I can't see anything but upside for them, free advertising straight to their target market, why wouldn't they be beating my door down??? Anyway, don't get me started or I'll go off on one.....
@@TheMissendenFlyer Lol... I know what you mean. Where did you get the Z900RS from when you reviewed it a couple years back?
I know a few people at a Kawasaki dealer in the Aylesbury area if you would like me to ask them on your behalf?
That's very kind but no need if we're talking on yer bike....
Would you recommend the F900R for a 6'4 (193cm) tall guy like myself with the taller seat? Cheers!
I owned an F800S about 11 years ago and it was a cracking bike. I notice they have abandoned the belt drive...
Yes shame that - I don’t really understand why we don’t see more belt drive bikes - I get the mechanical efficiency argument but lack of maintenance for me would be a greater advantage.....
@@TheMissendenFlyer It can only be cost. The belt requires a number of covers to prevent small stones getting between the belt and the sprockets which trashes the belt very quickly. The efficiency is about the same for a belt or a chain.
Oh right, I always understood chains to be more efficient but I stand corrected! You would think the cost of a chain would be considerably more than a belt given all the parts, but I bet you're right, these things usually come down to cost don't they. Good to hear from you as ever Graham...
going off piste a bit ,wot touring boots would you recommend for someone whos trying to get back on a bike ,maybe you could put it on your channel .TIA
Don't understand why BMW limit the launch colours across the same range, guaranteed ill buy the XR then they will bring out a blue and M series white ... grrrr
If it were green I would mistake it for a Kawasiki!
I guess you can buy it & paint it green, just to confuse people!
I guess it's a sophisticated "bit of kit" as you would call it.. But you really prefer this over the MT-09 ??? I mean, the MT-09 would rip this BMW in half when it comes to power. And surely the fun factor of the Yamaha is much greater? So whats so much better with this BMW then? I'm really curious, cause to me this bike just look like a traditional commuter kind of bike, that gets you from A to B. Am I missing something here? Anyways, thanks again for a great review! Cheers :)
