This reminds me of when you said you wouldn’t take curcumin. Apparently, curcumin helps the body to maintain it’s natural glutathione production as opposed to many other antioxidants which caused the body to down regulate production of glutathione and super oxide dismutase. I’ve seen that study in several videos by others so I was confused when you said you thought there was no point in taking it.

My Doctor is a Professor of Neuroscience at a large University in America. He was impressed with this study, I suffer Long Covid from Delta last October. He put me on 1,800MG of NAC in split doses daily, and 3000-4000MG of Glycine to be taken with the NAC same time. Alot of my Back, Joint, Muscle pain is gone now. The Glycine he said at 3000-8000MG really calms the Brain, he was right, I can feel the calmness. I have been talking it since the pandemic started. I had horrible uncontrollable asthma and was taking super strong steroids. I started 1000 mg 3x a day NAC and in months I did not need an inhaler or steroids. I stopped Nac and each time I felt my lungs weaken and need inhaler. Now I'm back on it breathing beautifully by the grace of God

Is 3000mg the dose that only works for you? Have you tried lower doses? I have asthma also, I'm taking 700mg of NAC + 600mg of glycine. I've only been taking them for a week and have noticed improvement, I'm wondering if i should up my dosage?

@@INTJ82 I started taking 600 mg 3 times a day since I ran out ans have not been able to find the 1000 mg pills and I have noticed a HUGE decline in my lungs and breathing. So definitely the 1000mg 3 times a day was the sweet spot for me. It's day and night difference. There's probably maintenance at low dosage and healing at higher doses. I would definitely up the dose at least for 1 month and see how you do. I did not have any side effects except happiness from not having to struggle breathing all day. Let me know how it goes!!

I had irregular heart beat and was put on 50mg Metoprolol per day. Even so, some days my pulse would still beat irregular. It was frightening actually. Forget how and why, but I started taking NAC 1000mg supplement only once a day. 2 months later I notice my pulse is always regular, so I reduced Metoprolol by half, and for 6 months my pulse never miss a beat. The dose recommend on the NAC bottle is 3 times what I take. Thinking now I will stop Metoprolol completely. Maybe my heart just comes good on its own or maybe the NAC... cant be sure. I am thinking the NAC reduce my blood pressure which in turn helps my heart beat. I am 72 and always worked hard as a Plumber and drank a lot of booze in the old days. As a latter stage COPD victim of asbestos, my doctor never pressured me to get the vax as there was a chance the small amount of virus injected could make my case worse. So I never ever had it and never will. The weird part is, my sister and husband had all 5 vax doses, and he got Covid twice and she once. Go figure. I think the best way to avoid it is less contact with others = less chance to get it.

I have been taking it ever since, I am 60. I have lost 35 pounds. With potty training my dog, walked a lot. Also started putting a squeezed lemon in my large water bottle. All the above caused me to lose that much weight. I am 60, post menopausal, on Hormone replacement therapy. Go figure, you can lose weight after MENOPAUSE.

Dear Jean: nac has reduced my pain level more than taking 1000mg of vicodin. I am in my second week of taking nac and am moving to the point of not needing pain medication. My wife is also taking nac. She is taking 1200mg daily. Her weight is 154 and hopefully she can soon reduce her pain medication. Just not yet. I half the time will double the dose of nac to 2400mg. Am also taking vitamin k2 + d and am removing atorvastatin as blood fats improve with the k2. Do not immediately take a double dose of k2 right away as I had a trip to the emergency room. Doubling up nac has no immediate effect. Don't do as I do in any case. Scientific research needs to be unaffected by politics, and systems of regulation and funding which are poorly set up resulting in incentivizing managing the symptoms and not treating the molecular causes of conditions.
The work you do on proper informing of people on molecular biology and gerontology is commendable in itself, too.

After reading the study, I found the reduction in Triglycerides to be over the top statistically. Even though this study excluded those with triglyceride problems, this is an improvement equal to or more than the statin market. No wonder the FDA wanted to make NAC illegal, so that it could be monitized.

@@supernice_auto most likely autoimmune issues (i have same)I do some of what this chick does/did and they work especially Long fasts (i.e. 4-5 days per month, or couple days biweekly) NAC also really good, Glycine probably good (especially for mood, in my case anyway) and garlic/unions are also good. BTW curcumin is the most overrated supplement out there, together with Chia seeds. In my case they were both bad (not horrible, but bad) and I'm sure they are not any good for anyone, but people use other supplements with them and think that benefits they are getting are coming from those two (Both Chia seeds and Curcumin were inflammation inducing for me, which exactly what you do not need lol). Dr Stanfield - great video and thank you for the summary of the research. In my opinion, as a researcher myself, I prefer the exclusion criteria they applied. They excluded individuals with health risks that could skew or interfere with understanding the impact of the substance on an aged adult with a "normal" metabolism. So in fact, I do think it is applicable to the general aged population. As a Dr., you are probably more focused on individuals who are ill or in a diseased state, and I respect that perspective. But first things first, lets find out what it does without the disease state.

Interesting! I have been giving my husband NAC for several months now as it was recommended by Stephen Buhner in his protocol for Lyme Co Infections. Specifically for Mycoplasmas in the Red Blood cells that we reckon was causing my husbands Anaemia of Chronic disease. He was diagnosed with RA nearly seven years ago and is in remission following the Antibiotic Protocol and Buhners recommendations. So Buhner recommends NAC, Bidens Pilosa, Sida Acuta. Also Cryptolepsis for Haemoplasmas and Mycoplasmas that are intracellularly sequestered in the red blood cells. His Blood work is gradually improving. Also takes Lactoferrin. So good to see another Kiwi taking the alternate route. And good to see the research to back it up. We had little to go by but have succeeded in reversing his health issues. He was also taking Curcumin but I found it interferes with Iron absorption. So he takes it away from Iron. He is 76. And so we shall look at the additional suggestions and keep him well. Always appreciate new information. The Drs had no suggestions for his treatment of the Anaemia of Chronic disease except steroids!!!

However, it gives me awful heartburn and gastritis. Which I can't afford to have as it was a gastric lymphoma that resulted in chemo. I read the study you referenced and it said this “Glycine and N-acetylcysteine and alanine were purchased commercially, and quality verified via certificates of analyses. These supplements are filled into capsules by a pharmacist, and provided monthly to study participants at doses of 100 mg/kg/d each of glycine and NAC, and 200 mg/kg/d of alanine.” Is alanine important? It's continually strange to hear what I guess is the Aussie pronunciation "knack." In the U.S. we spell it out and say "En Ay See." Just throws me every time 😝
NAC is usually safe in lower doses, but if you have even slightly impaired sulfur pathways, here's what can happen: the cysteine "backfires" into the bloodstream, it damages the hemoglobin, and you feel like your lungs are filled with thousands of sharp needles. The hemoglobin regenerates every 90-120 days, and when you reach a "critical mass" point during that window, the majority of the symptoms will usually resolve, the rest lingering and tapering off over the next few weeks. But it makes for an extremely unpleasant 3-4 months.
What impairs the sulfur pathways and makes one susceptible to this phenomenon? Mercury, for one thing, perhaps other heavy metals and certain industrial toxins, which binds to cytochrome enzymes and disables them, impairing those sulfur pathways.
Don't ask me how I know this, and I know a few other mercury-poisoned people to whom it also happened. No such issues with glutathione IVs in my experience and as far as I know. But if you suspect you are mercury sensitive or are known to have genetic polymorphism of cytochrome systems, you should probably proceed with caution.
I currently take about 600mg every couple of days, alternating with alpha-lipoic acid. When the "backfire" occurred (it was about 20 years ago by now) I was fresh from having had my mercury amalgams removed (whereby all long-standing pollen/dust/dander/grass etc. allergies simply disappeared), and I was taking 4 to 6 grams a day (along with vit C and E which help "recycle" glutathione, and milk thistle) to try to boost my GSH. I had a follow up with the dentist at that time, and the novacaine wasn't working - he had to pump in like 4-5x the normal amount to get it to act. The NAC-fueled detox systems were just eating it alive! So a little can go a long way, and safe is always better than sorry! GL to all.

@@stephanieilluzzi7355 You're welcome. My experiences are decidedly outside the norm as a person who had metabolic damage from chemical exposure and mercury, but it very conceivably could happen even at moderately high doses to people who are more susceptible because of genetic expression of CP450, or have sulfur sensitivities etc. in general. So caution and "starting low, ramping slow" is always the best policy, IMHO. All the best

Question for Dr. Brad (or anyone) please. In Medcram video #70, 10 seconds before the 3 minute mark, Dr. Seheult shows graphically a glutathione molecule, which is composed of 3 amino acids: 1) glutamate, 2) cysteine and 3) glycine. According to the the Medcram video, NAC is composed of cysteine and glycine. So my question is why supplement with glycine if you are taking NAC, since the NAC molecule is already composed partly of glycine? In the Medcram video, NAC alone (without supplemental glycine) was believed to raise glutathione. Thanks.

Ah, you beat me to this video. I've been following the study protocol for just over two weeks, and all I can say is "WOW". Since about six days into the regimen, my energy levels have skyrocketed. I used to lament being tired all the time, needing to take nap(s) every day, yet never feeling rested. Moreover, my mood suffered as a result. Additionally, my physical capacity for exercise has eclipsed what I was able to do before, especially in grappling and bike riding in high-heat conditions, two activities that used to kick my ass. So, I'm continuing this with great expectations. I will do blood tests after another two months, but obviously cannot access the detail level testing the study participants describe. I won't be surprised if further studies along the line of this researcher are somehow buried or otherwise quashed with new appeals to the FDA to restrict sales of NAC, which worries me greatly. Never under estimate the power of pharmaceutical agencies. However selective the criteria were, it is understandable they were done that way. Just imagine the cost of running such a study with the extensive testing and detailed tracking of so many parameters. Had they opened up the parameters too greatly, the number of weaknesses pointed out due to lack of standardization would increase greatly. Naturally, the study authors themselves are excited and have repeatedly asked to increase the number of studies and diversity of studied cohorts. The lead researcher may well deserve the Nobel Prize.

Hi, your videos are always appreciated! Could you do a video on glutathione strategies for people with MTHFR mutation? Or is it the same? Thank you!

Wow! Great results so far. I am also in my 70's and wonder if my Glycine and NAC powders could be combined in distilled water that i sip throughout the day? Would I get unwanted chemical mixture that undermins my intent?

Yes a really important unaddressed question is what the minimum dosage is to get the same increase in glutathione. No data so far it seems. Could such high doses cause kidney damage?

Hi Dr Stanfield, thanks for your videos, they're very informative and easy to follow! I'm wondering if you could do a video about the study done in mice that shows NAC promoted tumor growth? I'm currently on NAC for biofilm treatment - this supplement has had other unexpected benefits on my muscles and energy [I have SMA Type 2]. Would really appreciate your analysis of that study. Thank you!
