I would recommend people to get a baseline test (costs under $100) and then try supplements from an established brand and then test for yourself as these substances aren't going to get proper randomized trials anytime soon.
D-Aspartic Acid gave me massive headaches and feelings of depression. And on top of that there are no guidelines on specific dosage amounts to take. Tongak Ali gave me real bad headaches and caused my joints to pop and crack a lot it has a Estradiol lowering effect
Anecdotally I took Tongkat Ali for 4 months. I'm 49, work out regularly, have a clean diet, don't drink, and didn't notice any difference in libido, gains or sleep.
The amount consumed matters, both in terms of noticeable impact on libido, as well as the risk of side effects. The quality of the supplement also seems to vary quite drastically depending on the provider, from my personal experience. I wouldn't recommend for anyone to rely on these supplements for their relatively short term benefits, but it's interesting to read that you didn't notice any benefits after using Tongkat Ali for 4 months. My dad is about 10 years older than you, but he also didn't notice any difference from using Ashwaganda for a few months. That lack of an effect doesn't seem to apply to most people.
Boron needs to be taken in higher doses in order to increase testosterone like 10mg not 2mg like you see in that particular study you cited. Having tried most of the popular male supplements singly & in combination for years, I've become skeptical of them in general. Now I'm convinced that daily exercise, stress reduction, proper nutrition and rest, not to mention living with purpose, are far more effective at turning back the clock. Lifestyle changes require more effort than taking supplements, but the investment pays off in a virtuous cycle of improved well-being & positive attitude, which makes you more attractive (& you can guess the rest).
I've also been taking a ton of these male supplements for years, and I've been trying to warn people that, while many of them do have significant impact on testosterone, libido or even things like, workout performance and sleep in the short term - they all seem to have inevitable side effects that only get worse with continued use. Some of those side effects take months to get rid of, and there are reports of extremely rare cases of permanent damage done to testicles from long-term use of popular supplements, like Ashwaganda. I know how easy it is for people to convince themselves that they've found some kind of fountain of youth and there's nothing but benefits to gain from it, but I wouldn't wish some of these side effects on anyone. Yet, every time I mention it on the internet, there's always someone in these comment sections who insists that I'm just a whiner and there's nothing but upsides - "so everyone should take them and not look back" 😅
Good point Wayne. What's your opinion on eggs and meat. Will that boost free T? As opposed to say plant foods. As I'm doing all the things you mentioned but Im still too low on free T. Thanks
@contrarian717 I would not advise for or against animal proteins for anyone else, as our conditions can vary widely, for ex., the relative risk of CV disorders like atherosclerosis. I suspect that eggs and meat can provide the nutrients to produce testosterone more efficiently than plants. But the potential downside, like elevated LDL cholesterol, might not be worth it. If ED is a concern, it would be good to consult your physician to make sure there isn't an underlying condition having to do with circulation or metabolism.
Because the companies selling these products don't want to know whether they really work or not. So, they refuse to support or fund randomized studies of their products. Why? Because there's no money in honesty.
@@VernCrisler Sad but true. We live in a post honesty society. Not helped by politicians who now just openly lie, relying on people not to fact check them, making BS part of the social contract. Shameful.
Boron has to be a much larger dose closer to 12 or 15 grams, but its effect tapers off over fairly quickly as it increases estrogen as well. It has to be cycled. It raises testosterone by reducing SHBG but your body adapts in about 2 weeks.
@memedesimo1021 Yes sir, an appropriately large dosage and cycling for optimal effect. Boron a week, cycle off two weeks and ashwaganda a week cycle off two, tonkat, cycle off two. Rotate through them in this matter to keep them effective, prevent adaptation/normalization to the dosage, and prevent possible buildup in the body. Blood tests before and after to help confirm personal efficacy.
i think you mean mgs not grammes that would be a huge amount of boron but you are correct the amount in that study 2.5 mg was far to low to have an impact on test it needs to be around 10mg it does work at that dose but needs to be cycled
Afaik, the benefits of 3g d-aspartic acid peak at week 2 and decline from there, because the enzyme that breaks it down becomes massively upregulated. This means, after 2 weeks it needs to be cycled off for one week. This is why it had no effect if taken every day for 28 days.
Very good Video! What are the best supplements to increase libido and Potenz? i think testosteron is very important for that but are they also supplements they increase libido/potenz and not testosteron? Thanks :)
One study study showed that it increases the length of cancer telomeres in humans and shorten them in normal cells. It was just one study. 50mg dhea raises my testosterone to over 2000 ng/dl. Used it twice 7 years apart and each time it had the same result. I seem to be an outlier.
Another option that was not discussed: Enclomiphene is not a direct testosterone booster, but it can indirectly increase testosterone levels in men. It is a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM), meaning it works by blocking estrogen receptors in the brain. When estrogen receptors are blocked, the body increases the production of gonadotropins (LH and FSH), which stimulate the testes to produce more testosterone. Enclomiphene is commonly used to treat men with low testosterone due to conditions like hypogonadism. Unlike testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), which provides external testosterone, Enclomiphene helps the body produce its own testosterone by enhancing the hormonal signaling process, preserving natural testosterone production and fertility.
You beat me to it. It's not sold on Amazon, so that means it's already worth the money. My lab rat uses it at 5 mg/day during cycle, 25 mg/day during PCT.
My experience with BORON. I experimented taking Zinc (40mg) Boron (6mg) a few hours before bed. Every morning, I wake up with a hard on. The nights that I don't take it, that doesn't happen. Interestingly, I can achieve the nearly same effect by eating a handful of prunes and a handful of raisins. BTW, I'm 56 yr male. This is just me. Your milage may vary.
@@videofrat3115I got the same results with boron ( 3x3mg/day). I think the 2.5 mg/ day used in the study mentioned, was not enough to reach the threshold
Please make a video about testosterone patches 1-2mg. I saw Bryan jonhson using them. Are they harmful? Do you need to use them forever once you start?
I'm not on expert on it, but I would assume they work similarly to TRT and testosterone boosting supplements, in that the value drops below baseline when usage is concluded. I imagine I would have heard a lot more about those patches if you could gain permanent hormones after only using them for a limited time. I'm sure they're more convenient to apply than traditional TRT, though.
Which of these studies on tongkat took into account tolerance? Its a substance you have to cycle (if I take tongkat, fadogia or KSM-66 for more than a couple weeks the effects disappear).
I have a question for you: Can you prescribe TRT for me, I live in Australia, with total testosterone count of 12.4 nmol/L. as of July this year. I am 72 years old male. My doctor said I am too old for TRT. He has put me on Tadalafil. According to him I display every sign of low testosterone according to the government regulation. I have to be 6nmol/l to qualify for the treatment. I have tried all the stuff that you have actually mentioned in your video, nothing worked. I am healthy for my age. I don’t suffer from any sickness. I don’t take no medical prescription tablets just multivitamins. Can you help?
Please do a video for female hormones as well. It might not help with longevity, but would definitely help most women with aesthetics and reproductive health. Thanks for all your work!
I'm watching because testosterone is supposed to help with perimenopause/menopause but it's not routinely prescribed by the UK NHS so there's that too.
well summarized and thanks Brad for this! may I suggest you give a summary on when and how to take your favorite supplements? Hello Brad; can you tell us how TMG affects kidneys especially the fact that TMG increases CREATINE which then may be an issue with kidney function especially in the old ones like me at 68 or those prone to kidney problems.
@shaneashby5890 I was taking Ground Fenugreek, nothing fancy, just the spice you can find in any good supermarket. I would take apx ¼ to ½ a teaspoon every day. At first, I started with whole seeds soaked in water overnight and drank the whole lot in the morning. But then switched to the following two methods. 1. Make a Fenugreek 'tea' of hot water with some additional sweet spices like cloves, cinnamon, etc, to mask the flavour. 2. If I'm feeling lazy, I will scoop a ¼ teaspoon of the powder, sprinkle it on my tongue, and immediately chug some water 😄. Of course, you could be more creative and add Fenugreek to your cooking.
There was a doctor, an MD, on our local news several years ago that said L-Arginine, tribulus and ginko biloba taken together was worthwhile. Don't know personally because I've never tried it. She, the doctor, said that she had seen increases up to 40% in her office. This story aired probably 10 years ago.
Great video Dr. Brad. I appreciate the grounded and straight forward approach. Most interesting thing I heard in this video is the relationship between the winner effect and testosterone. I believe that when we are deeply connected to a purpose that excites us at a soul level (aka a true passion) and we engage with that purpose and experience personal wins in the process, it boosts our self-confidence and validates that we belong in the world and that we have great value to offer. I think testosterone (along with many other biological responses I'm sure) increases to bolster this postive mindset. Natures way of saying...yes! more of that please...here's some extra juice to support you in that direction. Perhaps an interesting theory is that as we age we tend to become more rigid and less nueroplastic. Not because that's how it must be, but because of our worldview and fear of aging. Therefore when believe we have run out of purpose and life requires us to change direction, it can zap our courage or feelt overwhelming. Many entreprenuers, especially men, may have a big win with a business they sell only to find a few months later they are miserable and depressed. I think it is interesting that this paralells with the post-ejaculatory energy drain. Your mind says...ahh we did it. Let's relax. I won. I'm done. We absolutely need purpose in our lives. Perhaps the low rates of testosterone in men today can be coorilated with a lack of purpose and the courage to step into challenges that are meaningful...especially after we think we have "achieved success" and think were done and should be happy forever now. Purpose has to be deeply rewarding and specific to you, not something borrowed from "what the other guys are doing to make money or get the girl, etc.". Of course, food, exercise, and aging play their role, but I suspect the lack of emotional intelligence in men to really listen to their inner world (something most women are better at) + the increased toxicity in the environment + the poorer quality of food + lifestyle choices like poor sleep all add up. Taking a supplement or even a medication can't possibly compensate for the violation of first principles of mental, emotional, spriitual, and physical well being. We have to think holistically IMHO.
Thought l arginine orally doesn’t work well bc used by liver first so l citruline which passes thru liver straight to kidneys to convert to l arginine is more effective & safer (doesn’t use urea like arginine to liver)?
I'm already using tadalafil 5mg a day, for various reasons, including limiting prostate growth. I'm 39y old and my total T has been over 1100 for years. If I start taking L-arginine (or even better, L-citrulline) I would skyrocket my T above the natural range. Lets just say, I predict, not going to happen :)
Wasn’t TMG 4g or more for the adverse lipids (u said 2-4 this video) 😅🤞(been on 4g/day)…i need to read those studies I think, for sure has worked for me tho to recomp & love that it’s a longevity supplement (could argue same for l citruline, good pre workouts for NO)💪thanks for recommending that a while back doc!
I've tried all compounds on the list, including fadogia agrestis. I've done blood tests on half of em en de rest I just measured strength and muscle circumference. In total, NONE of them worked on me. Now my total T levels are between 950 and 1340, (LH 9-13), so there's probably not much to improve anymore. If your levels are already high, don't waste your money. My view.
It might sound counter-productive, but if you take "natural herbs" for 3+ years, I think you'll notice the downsides of them quite significantly. They all have side effects that people don't like to talk about, or ignore because they've been using them for less than a year or in very small doses without running into any of the downsides. Synthetic supplements aren't ideal, but it's one alternative to getting the nutrients through food - which can sometimes be incredibly inconvenient since we have access to synthetic supplements that you'd have to eat unrealistic amounts of, say, watermelon (L-citrulline), in order to get the same benefits.
Short answer: no, waste of money. Anything sold on Amazon is marginal or suboptimal for test. or anabolic effects. Additionally, supplement sellers refuse to do randomized human trials on their supplements (you know some receive the real thing, others receive a placebo), because they're in it for the money, not for your benefit.
I'm surprised why you would consider testosterone beneficial to aging. Although it does increase quality of life...briefly...testosterone is a strong mitogen and should accelerate aging and time to the Hayflick limit. There is evidence for this. In apes, alpha males have worse health problems in old age and live shorter lives. By contrast, human eunuchs are among the longest lived males. The candle that burns twice and bright burns twice as fast. Also, I would be VERY concerned about any natural or synthetic chemicals that would increase testosterone as such chemicals that can influence a steroidigenic hormone are likely to have side effects as they asymmetrically influence pathways that are in a delicate balance with other hormones for growth and that require cell specificity through receptor ligand systems and undergo temporal variations that we don't understand...and those aren't going to be maintained in that delicate balance if you flood them with one thing. While very low testosterone can have negative quality of life effects in males, many of those can be effected in better and safer ways... exercise and diet for muscle and learning better social interaction skills to boost confidence. We just dont know a lot about the dangers and required specificity to monkey with these hormone systems for the average person. We already know synthetic testosterone with an unnaturally long half life and no temporal variability predisposes to some liver cancers. Unapposed estrogen stimulation has many negative effects in females...I doubt testosterone will be any different.
I lost almost all sensitivity down "there" after a couple of weeks of Ashwaganda, took months to get back to normal. I might been an outlier but it was pretty scary so look it up and be cautious if you wanna try it.
I used Ashwaganda for 4 years. 2 years of daily use and 2 years with cycling on and off. I never lost sensitivity, but I did experience anhedonia around the 2 year mark, which had a similar result. There are so many people like Sergio on the internet who say "don't care, just go!", but I have quite extensive experience with plant based, testosterone boosters both from my own experience and from witnessing their effects in people I know, and it seems to me that it's only a matter of time before their side effects kick in. Most people, and especially on the internet, only care about the short-term, so they conveniently convince themselves that these supplements are all about "gain" with no actual downsides, but I wouldn't want anyone else to experience the various, negative effects that always seem to creep up after a few years, and sometimes even shorter periods of use. We're all genetically different, but it's only on the internet that I frequently see someone claim that they've dodged these side effects entirely, despite claiming to have been on a supplement for a decade 😂
These nitric oxide products that dilate the vessels. I’m wondering if it’s safe many of them use. L Argentine are already bought it, but I am hesitant. Is there a danger in the dilation? Let’s say I stop taking it will be vessels collapse? Etc..
That's how many ED and blood pressure reducing medications work so usage is well-researched and established. All dilation effects don't seem to have any adverse reactions and I've never heard of blood vessels collapsing after stopping the medication.

You may be aware of this. I ran across a vitamin comparison, on a UA-cam link on a site, called "My Longevity Experiment". It was pretty ridiculous. The person compared your MicroVitamin, with 2 others. He based the "comparison", on the number of different vitamins offered, and the dosage provided - the higher the number and the higher the dosage - the better. Needless to say, in his "expert" analysis, your product came in 3rd. Apparently, not having Vitamin E or A in yours, meant it was lacking. Personally, I quit taking both decades ago, when the negatives of taking them became known. The other 2 don't have hyaluronic acid, which obviously expensive. I thought it was funny that his price comparison showed your product as more expensive. I didn't compare beyond those 3 obvious supplements. The vitamin with the most, and with the greatest concentrations, came in first. With no reasoning why, other than there were more, and in higher dosages. Can't believe this guy is an expert on anything, except spouting nonsense. To me, he came across as a babbling fool. And I made that clear in a comment on his site. Same with temperament. It would have been interesting to know exactly how much the testosterone level increased though
@@norwegianinph That's a bit odd. I'm a little familiar with the mechanism of increased FSH leading to hair loss, but I don't think that's a common side effect of Tongkat Ali specifically. That's more common when people consume a lot of egg white (contains a protein/antinutrient called Avidin, which can cause hair loss through loss of vitamin B7/biotin). Me, my cousin, and a few colleagues all used Tongat Ali for about 1-3 years, and we all experienced testosterone increases during the first year or so. Both me and my cousin became irritable and experienced periods where we were annoyed and slightly stressed for no reason. My blood tests showed that cortisol was increased while I was taking it. The initial testosterone boost also went down at some point. My colleagues stopped taking it before a year had passed, but they also seemed to lose the testosterone boosting effects over time. You can cycle it by only taking it 3-5 days a week, like you do. But it does seem to have diminishing returns over several years, even if you do it that way, I get the impression that very long-term use only exposes more side effects.
@@Asiansxsymbol Horny Goat Weed seems to work incredibly well for libido in some people. It's one of the few "test boosters" that I haven't tried, myself. I was not aware that Reservatrol was even vaguely associated with testosterone. As a rule of thumb, I'd avoid the plant based supplements for long-term use, and try the minerals and amino acids instead. As much as some people like to claim that herbal test boosters are sustainable and all about winning, it's always a matter of time before they turn the script on you.
Why is there a lot of studies talking about testosterone and aging and few on Estrogen and Progesterone. We could probably learn a lot on how these hormones affect the body and it's relation to aging.
my personal experience is that tongkat ali works for testosterone and libido and is most effective after about four to six weeks, fenugreek works for a week or so and then has the opposite effect, ashwagandha works but one has to take the extract and it works better after a month and then even better after many months of continued use. For people that do not do resistance training, TMG works slightly if you take it once every two or three days in small 500mg doses. TMG kinda cleared my mind and body and I feel a bit more loose, if that makes sense.
From my experience, and I've used some of these supplements for 3+ years, both with and without cycling, TMG is the only sustainably beneficial testosterone booster among the ones that you've mentioned. Ashwaganda, Tongkat Ali, Fadogia, Fenugreek.. all of the herb/root extracts had more noticeable, short-term benefits, but lead to various side effects over a longer period of time. Minerals and amino acids seem like a much better long-term solution. I wouldn't recommend any of the herbs/bark/root/resin extracts to anyone for sustainable use. Their very long-term side effects range from anhedonia or irrational irritability to nerve issues, and in extremely rare cases, testicular issues that may become permanent. As much as many of us like to think otherwise, I'm at this point fairly confident that there's not only upsides to taking plant supplements that substantially improves our biology in some way 😂

What really staggers me is the dearth of robust studies.
Shameful.

I very much enjoy your videos. Your information is without a lot of hype and is far more balanced than other youtubers.
Think it's often forgotten that it's all about balance. Testosterone that's high with estrogen that's low will probably cause issues
My experience with boron (6mg per day) is that it doesn't increase testosterone but rather decreases SHBG, resulting in higher free testosterone.
how long have you been taking and in what form? Free testesterone is where it's at.
@@Tsouknami Even better
Boron has to be a much larger dose closer to 12 or 15 grams, but its effect tapers off over fairly quickly as it increases estrogen as well. It has to be cycled. It raises testosterone by reducing SHBG but your body adapts in about 2 weeks.
Reducing SHBG it’s the key! Tongkat act the Same way!
Many thanks for being objective! Dr Brad. Interesting videos.
Afaik, the benefits of 3g d-aspartic acid peak at week 2 and decline from there, because the enzyme that breaks it down becomes massively upregulated. This means, after 2 weeks it needs to be cycled off for one week. This is why it had no effect if taken every day for 28 days.
If Arginine works, would Citrulline also work and maybe even better?
I've read somewhere they work pretty good together!
I take them both and they do help
Placeboooo
IIRC l-Citruline would work better in older patients as we lose the ability to convert Arginine the older we get
L-citrulline working longer, just like tadalafil works longer than viagra. Might as well try em together. 5mg taladafil a day + citrulline.

Brad, do you know what time of day is best to take testosterone boosting supplements for max testosterone?
One study study showed that it increases the length of cancer telomeres in humans and shorten them in normal cells. It was just one study.
50mg dhea raises my testosterone to over 2000 ng/dl. Used it twice 7 years apart and each time it had the same result. I seem to be an outlier.
This video was "balls to the wall." Very much appreciated.
Another option that was not discussed:
Enclomiphene is not a direct testosterone booster, but it can indirectly increase testosterone levels in men.
Enclomiphene is generally only available on prescription though so not readily available like ther supplements discussed.

Great work, thank you.
Thank you for this video
Always very informative

Please do a video for female hormones as well. It might not help with longevity, but would definitely help most women with aesthetics and reproductive health. Thanks for all your work!

Hello Brad; can you tell us how TMG affects kidneys especially the fact that TMG increases CREATINE which then may be an issue with kidney function especially in the old ones like me at 68 or those prone to kidney problems.
Which TMG-Betain powder or supplement do you recommend?
With audio only, "tongkat ali" sounds just like "tomcat alley" 😀
Fenugreek is fantastic for hair growth.
I found it stopped excessive shedding.
What type of fenugreek were you taking?
Great video. What about pregnenoline
Great comment. Can't be incorrect
Thought l arginine orally doesn’t work well bc used by liver first so l citruline which passes thru liver straight to kidneys to convert to l arginine is more effective & safer (doesn’t use urea like arginine to liver)?
What about DIM?
I'm already using tadalafil 5mg a day, for various reasons, including limiting prostate growth. I'm 39y old and my total T has been over 1100 for years. If I start taking L-arginine (or even better, L-citrulline) I would skyrocket my T above the natural range. Lets just say, I predict, not going to happen :)
Yo you should have mentioned the boost you can get from a novel sexual partner.

Not even a mention of fadogia agrestis, the only other supplement I've taken that can compare to tongkat ali.

How bout Shilajit or Maca Root?
My view.
Although TMG has several other health benefits, like Increasing methylation, for potential longevity gains.
If fenugreek works like finasteride isn't it better to take that instead? Why take lab made synthetic stuff when you can take natural herb?
It might sound counter-productive, but if you take "natural herbs" for 3+ years, I think you'll notice the downsides of them quite significantly. They all have side effects that people don't like to talk about, or ignore because they've been using them for less than a year or in very small doses without running into any of the downsides.
Synthetic supplements aren't ideal, but it's one alternative to getting the nutrients through food - which can sometimes be incredibly inconvenient since we have access to synthetic supplements that you'd have to eat unrealistic amounts of, say, watermelon (L-citrulline), in order to get the same benefits.
I have never heard arginine pronounced with the hard g. generally when g is followed by I or e it is pronounced with a soft g like gin or gel.

I was literally rushing to buy L-Arginine 🤣🤣
The same goes for forcing down SHBG to free up T. It just sounds too unnatural to me, and will cause some sort of imbalances elsewhere, imo.

Etc..
Arginine is just an amino acid, plenty of it in (white esp.) meat, nuts (peanuts esp.). A portion of meat likely has more than 5g already

The way you pronounce "arginine" grinds my gears.
Kiwi accent usually tend to do that hehe
my personal experience is that tongkat ali works for testosterone and libido and is most effective after about four to six weeks, fenugreek works for a week or so and then has the opposite effect, ashwagandha works but one has to take the extract and it works better after a month and then even better after many months of continued use.
