    You need a infeed deck raised up so you don’t have to lift each piece as you feed it into the edger , we had rails with small rollers on the lumber pilling end of the mill , you placed a piece of u-channel on the roller rails , and piled the lumber on top of the u-channel , when the pile was complete , you rolled the lift of lumber away , giving yourself space to pile another lift . Eventually the forklift arrived to remove the completed lift of lumber . We also used the same system to feed the planer mill . 👍🇨🇦

      Edger inline with off table. Today, Jade slides the flitch all the way and throws it in a pile. Instead of walking 15 feet, she puts the flitch on the edger and still walks to the end, removes from edger, throw it in the appropriate pile, walks back to get next board off mill

    • @scottsoper
      @scottsoper 4 місяці тому

      @@smisky1086no matter where you put the edger, there is no time for Jade to use it and still keep up. so the flitches have to wait in the infeed of the edger with the edger at an angle off the end so it can go along side the building. Some hooks on the mill return would make it so Emerald can carry the board to the end with the mill; no walking around to get the flitches.....

    Us old timers measured the square footage and shape that each machine in the yard takes up, as well as the total area and topography that the yard has.
    Then scale down everything to the size of a game board and cut the outline of the machines out of different colour paper.
    Also, find a roll of paper and do the same thing with the yard.
    Now you can easily move the "paper machines" anywhere in the yard as many times as you like until you settle upon the perfect arrangement without having to repeatedly move the machines themselves.

    Surely you can replace the beam that Jade busted or "sister" it up with another to support the overhead. With the new 70 on line working at an increased rate crew limitations you have an optimization problem. If you need to run the 70 at max caplacity with crew of two, then you need to calculate trade off benifit of standing down early in day to run the edger with the same two crew (Jade and Em). This is a labor resource constraint problem that you need to solve for maximum profitablility of product. Bigger businesses deal with this all the time and good number crunchers in operations could help you...if you had someone to help. Talk to people you know and trust and see if they can work it for you. The dance routines are nice and I am impressed with what you can do in work boots!

    My idea is line the edger parallel with the mill opposite of log deck. Mill operator (Emerald) as soon as the mill head is returned to the start position without dragging the flitch off, Emerald pulls the flitch feeds it in the edger. Jade can tail the edger and then return back to swamping the mill. Both Emerald and Jade will be moving together from mill to edger and back to the mill.

    Turn the edger 90° and put it at the end of the mill deck. That way Jade can remove the scales of the first cuts, run the following flitches through the edger (at a fixed width) and then , as normal, just take the finished boards of the saw deck. That would mean three pallets down by the deck. One for scales, one for sawn lumber and one for edged lumber. Guess the one for scales would have to be in the middle so Jade can put the offcuts from the edger on that pallet too.

    Emerald, thanks for asking us for ideas. The first idea for your dad would be forced overtime. once a week everyone work till midnight. That should catch you up in a month or so. Second would be putting your brother to work now. Don't video him for a while and he'll probably be old enough to work by the time the authorities catch on. Third would be to add another edger. Seeing you work that edger easily with one hand while drinking coffee makes it a no brainer. I think Jade could handle the other end of both edgers with ease. Have your dad contact me about more ideas. Instead of running from position to position, you could dance from place to place and sell tickets. It would easily pay for an extra employee or two.

    If you can arrange the edger alongside the mill so that the boards can make a "U-turn" or side move if they require edging you will save much space and get a nice work flow. Boards not needing edging can go straight to the pile off the mill. The only thing to solve is to get some sort of saw dust removal to avoid having to work between the machines. Having them alongside each other is also beneficial if you later on want to build a roof over the machines for better weather protection.
    If you cannot have the machines alongside each other, try to think of an right-angle turn instead, but this requires more "floor"-space. The aim should be to have both an efficient work flow and avoid as much manual handling (lifting, twisating etc,) as possible Using ball rollers in turns are very efficient.

      @LastNamefirst-wv7jj you need a life..there's nothing creepy about what I said.. but I guess in your twisted mind there is...oo well!!

      @LastNamefirst-wv7jj i,am not even close to 65..not even close..wish I was tho then I could retire.
      I,ve just worked way too hard and had several accidents and health issues that made me look old..one accident was a chainsaw ripping my left arm wide open.i got lifeflighted that day.
      I,ve survived five vehicles wrecks,a bloodclot in my lung,a very bad septic infection..it took a toll on me for sure and took alot of my memory.

    Put the Edger to the road side of the new Mill (Parallel to the Mill). As the wood comes off the Mill, Jade slides it directly across and feeds into the Edger. Edged pieces of wood will end up back with Emerald to clear off the Edger to stack. This will reduce the walking issue you highlighted you currently have due to the length of the Edger.

    • @scottsoper
      @scottsoper 4 місяці тому

      Will not work. There is no time to be messing with the edger while running the LT-70. It will be a challenge for Jade to even get the lumber stacked.

    Set it up at the back of the mill. So when your board returns to you, you can go from there right into the edger

  • @Rio-Jeos
    @Rio-Jeos 2 місяці тому

    A simple solution is a belt drive conveyor placed between the equipment with a feeder on the output to send lumber into the edger. its done at most factories to automate some steps in production. buy a used one to begin with to save money.

    I’m with other folks advising moving the edger closer to the mill, or vise versa. Yes, you said the mill is bolted to a concrete pad but if there is a more efficient way to do things it may have to be moved. Think of it like a kitchen, where you have have 3 major places to get to: food storage/fridge, food prep/counter space + oven and cleanup/sink. A work triangle is most efficient where nothing is more than a step or two away.
    Working with 12’ boards expands that triangle and distances that have to be covered, but same idea. If you have to have the mill & saw 90° to each other, then maybe add a roller table or two and get an electric scooter or Segway so Jade can zip back and forth. Or a couple so Em can buzz down to help load the edger.
    Or like other folks suggest, incorporate edging each day instead of just Fridays. So, 6:24 sawing and 1:36 edging. Assuming y’all work an 8 hour day. Good luck! 👍

    Wood Mizer has a customer spotlight video on a large mill with additional conveyor and the edger at the end. You basically need more room. A shed roof over the entire operation would be helpful, but again more money.
