  • I wanted to bench test my cruise control servo unit after watching an excellent video from UA-camr davida1hiwaaynet showing how to correct common problems with these units. His video goes into great detail of how to disassemble and diagnose these problems. You can watch his video clicking on the link below. My video goes into bench testing the solenoids on this unit for proper function before installation. Hope this helps others.

Thanks for posting. What a timely video. My 90 suburban cruise control just stopped working. I'll be doing these tests here in a day or so I think.

Solid video brother... These old cruise units can confuse people quick.

These servos are pretty much the same in all 80's GM cars, I have same unit in 1990 Suburban. Mine was occasionally leaking out vacuum causing speed loss, but recently the other valve malfunctioned and actually forced acceleration by letting too much vacuum. I disassembled both valves, having to replace a spring in a vacuum valve and substitute a crumbling white orifice with a gas nozzle from a stovetop, I did a writeup with some pictures on a GMsquarebody forum.

David posted the foam filter problem. He has some good videos of ac repairs on 80’s Gm’s. The center winding on your unit is the position sensor. Thanks for posting.

My knowledge is just good enough that my cruise control now works. But the gentleman in this video below is much more knowledgeable than myself. Hope this helps.

@@rojelioochoa918 You'll have to do some modifications to the brackets to make everything line up. My 87 El Camino has a Sniper EFI on an Edelbrock EPS intake so things did not line up on mine initially. I modified the original servo bracket that mounts to the drivers side head on the rear near the firewall as well as making a bracket that ties into the throttle linkage bracket. Then I mounted the vacuum canister behind the front drivers side headlight bucket to clean up the engine bay. I'll have details on this in an upcoming video of my Holley Sniper install. Should be posted next week. Here is a link to part 1 of that series. Hope this helps.

@@rojelioochoa918 If you've eliminated the computer in your car then you need to find the black wire with white stripe behind the glove box that used to be connected to the computer. Then simply ground it to something metal under your dash and your cruise should work.
