I can so totally relate. Until 4 years ago, I was a very active 61 year old man who had a lifelong obsession with fitness and especially Karate. I've practiced for 47 years, hold a 7th degree black belt, and was still actively teaching and sparring at 61 years old. Then one afternoon in May 2016, I suddenly became ill with an extremely high fever, out of nowhere, and was rushed to the hospital. I woke up 9 days later from a coma, and was told that I had a severe case of septic shock, and had only been given less than a 10% chance to live. Well, 4 years later, I'm still here, but in a wheelchair, where I'll be the rest of my life. The illness did irreparable damage to my legs, and even though I busted my ass in PT, and still do, this is it for me. However, I can still train a little bit, and rediscovered music, playing bass, being a Grandpa, and loving my 2nd chance at life. It's all in your perspective, and I'm a "never give up, never give in" kinda guy. Love your channel, it's very inspiring to folks like us. Keep it up! 🤘🤘

I had a friend in college whose favorite hobby was pushing the envelope of "wheelchair accessible". He talked about the importance of knowing how to handle "Oh, shit!" scenarios: Flat tire. Putting snow chains on. You go downstairs to get the mail and when you go back the elvator's broken. How to go down stairs without bouncing. Or fun stuff: How to get into the top bunk of a bed. Maybe how to handle unexpected crises and problems might be some good topics for future vids?

Thank you for posting this, Richard 💖
I became a full-time wheelchair user about 4 years ago, and last summer finally succeeded in getting a couple of steps back. I found your channel at that stage, and it really helped me with some of the complex feelings of trying to live life fully in a wheelchair whilst also desperately working to get out of it. No amount of professionals could prepare me for, or actually even understand, the amount of 'stuff' that can come with being a wheelchair user, and hearing someone else talk openly about the good and the bad really helped me to be kinder to myself and realise my feelings were normal, and completely valid. I also got a tonne of inspiration from you of fun things to try out in my chair with friends, and realised life didn't have to stop just because it had changed.
After just a couple of months of my baby steps, I had a huge setback and lost it all. So I am now also having to learn to walk again...again.
Thank you for sharing your story up until now, and I just wanted you to know that you have really helped me see my situation differently and take every opportunity possible to laugh and have fun while still working towards some improved mobility. I wish you the smoothest recovery possible, and thank you for everything 😁😁😁

I understand, I use an electric wheelchair but I can still walk, I have hEDS so hypermobile and bad joints, many surgeries and crazy pain.
I'm still embarrased to get out of my chair and stand or walk some in public.

    • @sixmercer2504
      @sixmercer2504 3 роки тому +10

I have hEDS too. I have a custom manual wheelchair with Twion wheel assist. I also use forearm crutches for very short distances like the ones Richard uses.
The problem I have is that I can break my wheelchair down as far as it goes and the frame is still extremely heavy for me and each wheel weighs 15 pounds, which might not seem like a lot but when you have degenerative disc disease and terrible back and hip pain....plus severe POTS and heat intolerance from adrenal insufficiency, balancing my heavy frame off the ground to put each wheel on without accidentally knocking one over (that happened once, it barely even hit the ground because I caught it with my foot) and they had to send my entire wheelchair and wheels out so I was without it for 6 months. I have a back up but I can't push myself very far, my shoulders are a mess including a completely torn rotator cuff and atrophied muscles and tendons in my right shoulder. My wrists are bad too which require bracing. I don't wear my leg braces when I'm in my wheelchair because I need them so my knees don't hyperextend.
So....thats the short of it, so much more but it gives you an idea of how my EDS affects me.
I absolutely hate being seen putting my wheelchair together or walking when I use my wheelchair, the part I hate the most is walking from my car door to the trunk and heaving out this wicked heavy wheelchair out and then wheels which is a fight because it fits in there just right, and I hate being seen putting it together. It's totally anxiety inducing for me. I actually have the lightest weight frame Medicaid would pay for. Sad. They sure know how to make you regret not giving them what they wanted by getting the much less expensive power chair. I don't need a power chair and I don't want one. This option works perfectly for me if only I had a frame like Richard's. My chair was $25,000. So I have been waiting 6 years for my disability case to be approved (I have a great lawyer, I live in Colorado where it takes absolutely forever to get through the endless appeals for each step). Once I finally get my retro pay I'm going to look into a new frame. Maybe even used if I can find one.
Anyway, I just thought I'd let you know that I go through the same feeling about walking, which I can do perfectly for a few yards, but it's painful and I have to try to keep my hip from dislocating which makes the other sublux (subluxate? I never have been able to figure out the right way to say it without "tion" on the end). And I have to worry about people watching me constantly have to take little breaks so I don't pass out from the heat or POTS. By the time I'm done with one 15 minute doctor's appointment the whole ordeal minus the driving can take an hour or more. My service dog keeps my sanity. Oh! And speaking of disability, I'm always so terrified they are sending people out to watch that I'm not doing anything that isn't explained in my many appeals and my application. I'm so worried if I'm having a good day and I walk my dog to the end of my townhome building and back they will say I lied.
To top it all off my PCP just left the practice and handed me off to a total jerk who is completely unfit to be in medicine. I have been shut down by every other clinic I can find that takes Medicaid because they aren't taking new patients. This dude had me before a few years ago and told me I'm beyond his level of expertise and that's how I ended up with the one who just left. I need a new clinic closer to my house anyway but man, being disabled and constantly having to PROVE is is a full time job. And no, I don't want a power chair. I really like the wheel assist. It's not a Smart Drive. I tried that and another one like mine called E-Motion. Mine are very similar to the E-motion wheels. Twion makes them and I love it.
Sorry for going off. I lay in bed most of the time sleeping a lot from severe fatigue and brain fog, and you know all about the chronic pain. I almost never get out and have lost nearly every friend I had when things went downhill. They could never understand this stuff anyway.
Do you have the trifecta? Gastroparesis, POTS and MCAS too?
Being able to talk to someone else with the same convective tissue disorder would be great. Just ignore me or something if you're not interested in responding.
Take care my fellow Zebra warrior!

You give me inspiration to keep going. Even tho we have different things going on.. my story is extremely long and I won't bore you with the whole thing, but when I was 14 I was injured during a surgery. I immediately lost all muscle fibers / oxygen to my leg it completely atrophied. I was immediately diagnosed with a horrible disease called RSD. Reflex Sympathetic Dystophy. It is the most painful disease known to medical science. It's no joke. It spread full body a few years after having it and about 3yrs ago it started internally. I've had everything from brain surgery to heart surgery to major chest surgeries then major stomach surgeries you get the point. I spend most of my days in bed trying to cope with all of the pain and misery I'm in. It doesn't help that 2 days ago my girlfriend and I broke up, primarily due to my illnesses.. I have over 100 diagnosises it's crazy. I just don't want to spend whatever time I have left miserable! I'm so self conscious with my teeth right now (I lost 15 so far due to my RSD and complications) the next 9½ are going to be removed soon. It just is really scary. Now I have to go through it alone. I really need the motivation to get out of bed and try and survive another day.
Your videos help me do that, so thank you.

I got my first chair about a year ago pretty much straight after my hEDS diagnosis and even though It's a different condition I still use a chair when I go out and sometimes at school. Having watched you (I think before I got my chair) I embraced it as I knew it was better for me, and it has meant that I don't care what other people say about it (very helpful for a 14 year old!). I have a card that explains that not everyone who has a wheelchair uses it constantly and even if they still don't get it, it doesn't matter because its my body and they wont understand a chronic illness until they properly know someone with it. Richard, and other UA-camrs, I thank you, for showing me that my chair is good and that I can even do cool tricks and that its not something to be ashamed about (even is I am the only young wheelchair using person in my small village that they have ever seen!) you have inspired me to hopefully sometime soon start a channel, raising awareness about my condition to help others in the future with what you have done for me!

Other sci UA-camrs I know aren’t like this and exaggerate on camera and it’s a different story off camera where you are plain real. As a person with sci I can relate to you because of this. Many thanks.

I was like, "huh? I saw this episode, right?" The reason that you prefer your wheelchair over walking, because it causes you less pain and saves you energy.
I saw the episode, now I get that this is a whole different story. Take care and keep up the good work from Wheels to Walking.

These kind of stories are truly eye opening for people like me who have no restrictions physically but seem to take that for granted I'm never surprised by the motivation and courage that it requires daily to succeed in these situations and with that I say God bless and that people such as yourself and others like are the true role models that we need to imitate !!!

Seen a few of your videos here on youtube now, and got me inspired to get me some new 'wheels' I can totaly relate to everything you have put up with, and gone through.
Thou due to my stubornness i waited to long before getting my first wheelchair, hindsight, about 4 years ago.
My story before that goes like this, born with 3 diferent kind of spinal disabilities, then i got injured in my neck back in 1987 gymnastics accident, and got a back injury during a solo skiing acident in 1991, where 4 diskos got destroyed and L3 lost a bit of its height, like squesing a donought, in just a few micro seconds into a skiing acident i lost 2 inches of my height. I did however not get paralyzed, I could walk and run, still, but now I can only stand and take a few steps, but the constant pain that cant be delt with in any ways, that just slowly kills.
So to keep me going i went biking and hiking, cliff climbing, canooing and traveling, till i got hit by a car in 2001 while riding my mtb, destroyed my left shoulder somewhat, so biking and other stuff wasnt an option any more after that.
After that hit by the car everything just tok a downhill turn for me, some might get past that faster than others, but the constant growing and naging spinal pain due to the old injury, and everything else that happened at that time, just got me broken good. Became homeless for a few years, and lost almost everything, most of all hope.
Turning point came in 2020, got some help to got me a flat, messured for elderly and disabled people, and thats when i desided to go with 'wheels' as well.
What a diference that was, but the sacking of the cloth, that you also mentioned a few times, in your videos, your spot on there, its a killer when your already in a pain lock, that cant be delt with in any way, if the support for back and seat dont fit together anymore.
It can just be so destructive the pain it adds to, when the support dissapears.
So after by chance or luck or whatnot, a few weeks ago i stumbled upon one of your videos, showoff ;) of handeling a wheelchair on a parking lot, and that got me to a new turning point, I now want me a wheelchair, that fits me. Somewhat custom made.
I'm not going to fit in to 'a standard comercial wheelchair' that dont support anything. Not anymore.
I'm not going to fit into a wheelchair, the chair is going to fit me, from now on, when I can afford to buy it, that is, costum fitted chairs aint cheep. Might be a year or two before i can afford it, unless i can get a bank loan and then pay off on that afterwards, witch i hope for.
Now to the good news, got the chair messured earlier today...
If I get the new chair as soon as i hope for, then i can get out this summer and draw some nature and people again, and perhaps even start playing darts again when fall arrives, who knows?
Wasting time playing computer games, just gets borring in the long run, even thou if the game catches on, then the adrenaline rush can sometime cut off the pain... but never for long.
That would be a nice turn of events, for me, to get a new chair and get out more.
So thank you for these videos you posted here, and best of luck to you and everyone else.
"We have all been down that hill and/ or that road, at some point in life, sometimes more than once, just look at it now, instead of trying to force it, then you will notise that your already at the top, of an even higher mountain or near the end of a much longer road."
Was a homeless guy who told me that, one of the first i met, he was called "Jesus" by everyone on the street's back then, somehow he knew where to find newly homeless people, and give them a short guide of the life aheead as a homeless of the street's in Copenhagen, Denmark.
I don't know what became of him, but anyway he would have been to old by now, to even be alive.

My grandma has used a spinner knob on her steering wheel since like 2015 when she hurt her shoulder really really bad and she loves it and still uses it (even though *technically* they’re illegal or at least in Texas) and I had a pretty traumatic event in December too, I had a suicide attempt that put me in the ICU (I overdosed on 6 600mg Trileptal pills which is a mood stabilizer and was one of my prescription meds for my mental illnesses) and if you were gonna get seriously hurt, at least it was doing something kind to help someone else. I’m so excited to see your story and recovery, I’m going to watch all of those videos next! ♥️
