Yes! Met the woman of my dreams just after my t3 spinal injury. We were in college. She's an able bodied woman who happened to fall in love with a guy who uses wheels instead of legs. That was 36 years ago... been married for 33 years and we have four children (the last two are twins). I'm still a very active and outdoorsy wheelchair user and she is still in great shape and works out at the gym three or four times a week. We've had our ups and downs just like any other couple who've been married for 33 years... but we still love each other and keep rolling along!
This video is so insightful for someone about to be in a relationship with a wheelchair user, I'm literally going to give this link to any future love interest and tell them if they want to know about me, but are afraid that I'd be misrepresenting some things to appear in a more favorable light, just take it from someone else, because this is 100% me. Thank you Jalila and Richard!
Hello Dominic. My name is Garland, I am in a wheelchair and fiance is a full able body. We have a channel about our interabled relationship. We are continuing a series that she did about her insight inside our relationship. If you are interested, you can go to our channel and watch the series. She is also going to continue it and it will be Thursdays.
Thank you for posting this video. I just lost my ability to walk due to my cancer and I’m married. We r having such a hard time dealing with everything! Even intimacy. I’m forwarding the video to my husband I hope he gives it a try to listen. Thanks again and God bless u guys.
Thank you for this video. I really wish this was around when I was newly injured. I am a t6-t8 paraplegic. I've been with my husband 7 years (married 4) and we have a 3 year old son.
I'm going to college to become a physical therapist and your videos are very helpful to help me understand some things about the people that I will be working with in the future.
Communication is soooo important in relationships on it's own but even more important for a disabled/ able bodied couple's relationship. I'm not in a wheelchair, I'm visually impaired, but a lot that was mentioned in this video is very relavent to my fiance and I. So important to talk about this stuff.
So funny to watch what is happening in the background. One second a person is walking along, the next they're gone. But I paid attention to the main topic as well. Some great observations, for you two, and in general.
You guys are awesome since iv been watching your videos it's been getting my my self-esteem up more nd giving me the will to go nd shoot my shot at the one person who would love me for me
Hi There is a lot of things I did not know about people in wheelchairs, this is so educational. I’m sure you have your moments, and we all do. I think you’re amazing and so brave. God bless
5:46 I also have some things I like to do myself because it gets me moving, and I have things I like to do or have done a certain way because it's more convenient for me. 13:14 I feel that should be the case in *any* relationship. Jalila is kind of like my dearest Cori, in that she just says things the way she feels them. I think that's good, especially because I'm Dutch. I didn't know people in wheelchair have a certain way to do things even though I use a wheelchair. I thought that it was my ^autistic trait" that made me to do certain things
I was injured from a car accident at 52. Hardly seems real that it’s already been about 10 years now. I’m no longer taking any pain meds or anything for spasms. I feel blessed that those things are now minor and tolerable. I did develop blood clots about a year and a half ago, so now I do take Eliquis. I’m curious about your journey with going vegan. How long did you do that? Never did I realize I’d be going poop so much. I guess that’s why I’m a Flexitarian... Standard American Diet 20% / vegan 80%. Hence the term, Flexitarian. That diet does not affect my bowels in the same way. I already have to cath 5 times a day. I didn’t want to deal with added bowel movements too. 😂🤣
So the one trick here is finding a person thats a better person than yourself. But its damn hard though....i personally never want to discuss the deets of my struggles because i feel i dont need to trouble my partner at the time with any issues that a normal relationship with a normal person would not have. Perhaps its all about finding the right person who you can open up to...
First and foremost, ur girlfriend is awesome! She is so sweet, funny and cool so put her in MORE videos would ya!!! That is indeed an order! I have systems too lol I too am anal about things being done my way.. I think most of us are 🤣 My guy and I have a perfect system.. Either I do it or he does it my way 🤣 Nah I'm kidding!
Ofc she will help you with your knee. Me and my wife are able person but still when she come home from a hard working day, I massage her back. Which happens 4 times a week. That is not nursing, you never have to think it like nursing. Having pain and helping your SO is not nursing, it is normal in relations.
Richard, the crying thing, I have become more emotional since losing my leg too. I think it's part of our PTSD, trauma to our bodies leaves us with mental trauma, crying is a coping mechanism. My thoughts on it.
LOL. I lost it when, in editing, the conversation changed abruptly from a discussion on sex to...grocery shopping. LOL. I am totally afraid of exploring a new sex life as a gay man. So, when it starts getting intense, I'll go grocery shopping. love you guys. Thank you.
As a wheelchair user seeing things through Jalila's experience of going from LEVEL 0: Had never been to a hospital due to any emergency to LEVEL 10: Watching someone you love (Richard) deal with the car accident experience, I'm sure would mess with anyone's psyche.
You two are such a lovely couple ❤ Both myself and my boyfriend have chronic illnesses, but neither of us are in wheelchairs or use mobility aids. I think a lot of what you talk about is true for couple's with any medical issues. I have some systems in place to help my health and my bf has his systems too. We are long distance so don't get to see each other often, and with this coronavirus it's been at least 3 months :( I think a useful phrase in any relationship is "is there anything I can do to help?" It lets the other person know you're there and available and puts them in charge. I think problems arise when we assume someone needs help and assume what they need doing. Asking is a better bet. Also it sounds like Jelila (sorry I've probably spelt that wrong) understandably experienced second hand trauma from the crash. I'm proud of her for coping with it in healthy ways, and Richard how you cope with set backs and new problems is inspiring. It is telling of the work you've put in over the years to rebuild life from rock bottom. I've heard there are 5 ways of expressing and feeling loved: physical touch, kind words, thoughtful deeds, gifts and companionship. It sounds like to me you have both figured out what the other needs which is fantastic and so important to have a healthy and strong relationship. Much love to both of you ❤❤❤
2 months into Dating my Partner my metal burst through my skin and brought 9 vertebra with it, during a lunch Date. I had to get airlifted to a hospital 6 hours away and have major back surgery. Probs not the best start to a relationship 😅
Today is our 50th anniversary. On our 5th he was in the burn unit at Cleveland Metro. On our 10th, I was in a wheelchair. He has now been diagnosed with a series of spinal cord injuries and is in a chair. Pretty much one thing after another forever. You guys have nailed exactly how a relationship works well. He is a C4, incomplete Asia d. We are always there for each other, complete honesty and trust. Love of my life and best friend. Hang in there, you are teaching some great things.
I'm a wheelchair user and never had a gf. Although it may present a challenge I dont think it stops me from being in a relationship. My problem is I'm a bit of an oddball. Or I suppose you can say I'm unique depending on how you look at it. Some people aren't meant to be in relationships and I guess I can accept that. Despite my disability and no romance I still enjoy life! Got good friends and a beautiful family. Thanks for such an inspirational video!
Damn bro I understand exactly how you feel because I’ve been through a lot in my life and I do appreciate your videos. You are a very lucky guy to find someone like her God bless you guys
I’m an above knee amputee and use my chair more than my prosthesis due to nerve damage and injury to my meat leg. I also have kids. My beautiful husband took us all on. My accident was 17 years ago and my amputation was 11 years ago. We met six years ago. Not only do we have a strong and loving relationship but we have had children together and he took on my other kids. Too many people assume that, because I’m disabled, our relationship can’t possibly be fulfilling for him and he must be in more or a parent type role. That is absolutely not the case. He works outside the home and I work from home. I’m the primary caregiver for the children and he steps in as soon as he gets home. I also take care of the house because I’m home. When he’s home we share all the duties. He’s an excellent husband and father and we have a very close and very “normal” relationship. My wheelchair is a part of me but it doesn’t define me.
Of course they can. I’m a paraplegic, complete. My boyfriend and I were together for 8 yrs. We even lived together and had a baby daughter. She’s now 22 and even though the two of us aren’t together anymore we’ll still spend time together during certain holidays with our daughter and other family members.
The part about not creating systems that constantly rely on your partner really struck me. I’ve only ever been in relationships with “able-bodied” men & SO many times that has happened & I’ve felt like a mother or a maid. I do think I would feel differently if I was dating a guy who legitimately required assistance with ADLs but when its just laziness its so annoying!
This was so helpful. I think everyone striving to be a good partner can take something away from this regardless of their abilities. What you both do so well is communicate - something so often overlooked. I can't read your mind man!
Thanks for making these films. I was given a wheelchair years ago, but I haven't used it. I haven't even been outside for 2 years! You've taught me more in a few minutes than my physiotherapist ever did! I feel much more confident to use it now. I'm actually quite excited to learn what I've been watching! Cheers very much! 👍🏻
You mentioned Bowel and Bladder stuff. When do you think it’s okay to talk about that kind of ‘awkward’ topic? I’m not dating right now, but it’s been a scary topic to me to think that I might meet someone I’m interested in and scare them away because of my weird problems. Like... “Hey dude, I pee with a catheter FYI” 😶
Maybe once you start to stay at their place overnight. My bestie cannot have kids and because that can be a big deal breaker she bring that up on the first date.
I always thought it was something you should just keep to yourself until it’s a serious relationship. the only person who’s not in my family that knows that kind of stuff about me is my best friend.
Personally, I would just assume any wheelchair user would have a bladder/bowel program. But I probably have more experience with such subjects than the average Joe. And personally, I’m ok with bodily fluids and helping in such situations.
The systems thing is actually really helpful hearing y'all talk about as I'm someone who's very particular and there are many things that I need to do a certain way. I've been worried how that'll play into things and it's nice seeing it work!
Wow! 2 adults talking so good. So good. As a female in mid-70's I know everyone is going to change sooner or later and to be adaptable. And thanks for including the open sex discussion. Now I use a rollator and if I want to enjoy cruising a path in a park - give me my powerchair. Thanks for the great videos. And wise words.
I met my husband 10 1/2 years after my injury. We’ve been Married for almost 20 years, 3 grown kids (first two from his previous marriage, his first passed away due to breast cancer, third... I gave birth, too). I live my life as a wife and mother, we don’t focus on the chair. They help when needed. Advice from your video... don’t live together. Treat her like a lady and marry her if you love her. Marriage is a huge commitment and I love it!!
iTS Amazing to find some one that dose not care that your disabled dont end it when I talk or try n date has ben for over 10 Years since i was ran over by a drunk. But always its about bing fiscal able and Money and how could I take care of them? I take care of my self and have scince the run over, But women I have found are shallow and its what u due n give them..Noting bad on you two, Congrats on finding each other Cherish your time together. Good luck. Be safe n healthy . take care of each other.
Absolute BANGER of a video!! So much I want to say but I'm gonna have to watch it again right now, SO good, these are the types of videos I love from you guys! I love to see Richard when he's with Jalila, he seems so much more relaxed and comfortable. You guys are adorable.
I love love love Julia. She is amazing...you better be keeping her around, she's pretty awesome. ;) Who'd ever thought, Richard is the gurl in the relationship!! LOL Oh, Georgia Gal here too!! I'm in Flowery Branch but only recently. Cumming, GA is my hometown.
Catching up on some of your videos - Y’all are such a cute couple!! I notice you talked about some of the 5 Love Languages!! Understanding that is key to all relationships!! I literally busted out when you said that you had to tell two stories just to get to the main story. My husband hates that about me. I have had to learn to get to punchline then give the back stories. 😂
I've always been independent, when my disability started taken it's toll, I still had to find a way to things on my own, I've been in a wheelchair of and on, now in my later years full time, I still don't ask for any help, that may stem from my PTSD, but I have had to learn/adapt, on the flip, it still amazes me that when I look like I am struggling to reach something, or do something that people act like your invisible, I like your videos. not all info videos are inform ably there, your girlfriend is amazing and a rare find in this day in age of over ego people trapped in there phones and such
Mentor teacher Leader thank you Richard for being so amazing you truly inspire me in so many different ways your inner strength tenacity and perseverance shines in such a wonderful way you have a wonderful gift to motivate and encourage people you inspire me to be a better person I also have videos on UA-cam (spiritual health is wealth ibn Washington)
Although, we can express love by helping our significant other - whether or not they have a disability - nobody wants to be in a relationship with their mom (or Dad). Meaning a caretaker. It's a delicate balance.
Hello Dennis. My name is Kyzia. I am in an interabled relationship. My fiance is paralyzed from the waist down. We have been together for almost ten years. We just dealt with a wound that finally healed after a year. She helped with many things I needed taken care of that I personally couldn't do myself because I was in bed for a year. Caretaking is apart of our relationship but it's not like a mom or dad taking care of their child. She takes care of me because she loves me. Now, I am able to do many things that I couldn't do while in bed. But, its not like that at all.
Why do you look at using a wheelchair as something bad something wrong so what if my legs are unemployed Why would someone be in a relationship with anyone else

They're probably PATREON supporters and, people on PATREON usually get to see these videos about 24hrs before they go live on the normal W2W channel.

New videos every Tuesday!
As always, excellent information.👍✌
Catching up on some of your videos - Y’all are such a cute couple!! I notice you talked about some of the 5 Love Languages!! Understanding that is key to all relationships!! I literally busted out when you said that you had to tell two stories just to get to the main story. My husband hates that about me. I have had to learn to get to punchline then give the back stories. 😂
I've always been independent, when my disability started taken it's toll, I still had to find a way to things on my own, I've been in a wheelchair of and on, now in my later years full time, I still don't ask for any help, that may stem from my PTSD, but I have had to learn/adapt, on the flip, it still amazes me that when I look like I am struggling to reach something, or do something that people act like your invisible,
I like your videos. not all info videos are inform ably there, your girlfriend is amazing and a rare find in this day in age of over ego people trapped in there phones and such

I'm SCI c5-c6 since 1995 and with my wife since 1997. We have two children and never have been happier than now. Best regards.
Do y’all travel together, maybe for a couple days?I travel just to kind of blow out the cobwebs sometimes. Blue Ridge, GA. Want to visit?
Such an inspiration thanks for all the great videos
As a person who uses a wheelchair I can't stand when ppl give me help when I would figure things out my way lol 😂
Why do you look at using a wheelchair as something bad something wrong so what if my legs are unemployed Why would someone be in a relationship with anyone else
I was with my son father 2 years before having my son then he started using me in many ways
