You know, the killer irony is it should be much easier for Tails to lift Sonic in water. In fact, entirely possible according to the laws of physics. As opposed to the totally impossible physics defying flying act he usually does.
Sonic is stuck in his balancing animation in Star Light because he is suffering from a glitch known as the "slope glitch". In this glitch, if you were to control Sonic again, would run in the last angle you landed on. So if you landed on a slope, he would run down it until he reaches the death pit.
I mean, that segment was an absolutely glorious cacophony of bad posistioning and gameplay mechanics. Sonic just so happened to be hugging the wall leading to the ceiling, and thanks to the momentum gained from the fall, it allowed him to lock to said ceiling as if he was in a loop, creating a situation where he ended up uncontrollably running all the way back to the button. That singular line just seals how unfortunate that situation was in a hilarious manner.
But... Mushroom Hill has an easy setup for it. You just spin dash to the left. Heck, I think Sonic 3 has its fair share of chances if you insist on calling it a separate game. People really say it's Death Egg Zone? Why do people think that?

Sonic doing the constant edge animation is probably due to you activating the ledge glitch by accident. The reason sonic went through the floor when he landed on the ramp is because the ledge glitch keeps Sonic's current state of the ledge he was last on, so he was at a 30 degree angle, so he kept going at a 30 degree angle through the floor, that is a side effect of the ledge glitch.
The mobile remakes do have the elemental shields, but the only way to play with them added is to use the hidden level select and use the newly added option to toggle them on.
39:29 - Sonic lagged the game when going too fast and switched to random animations, Tails morphed into ncioS, the music was glitching, some SFX were muting channels... I'm surprised the game never crashed even though some important RAM addresses might have been hit by these bugs.
Well, without Sonic Classic Heroes or with the mobile version of Sonic 2 (which btw, is avaliable for pc) it would be impossible! Tails can't fly at the Genesis version of Sonic 2
It did go unused! This is a glitch that happens for some reason in vanilla S3K when you fly sonic into a horizontal spring. I think for some reason the game tries to DMA way too much data and it can end up overflowing into other parts of VRAM, but in this case the glitch just displays random frames of sonic's animation routine. I did want to look more into this eventually..

This should usually trigger whenever Sonic (or any other playable character) stands on a sprite based object as it's destroyed, though there have been less well understood causes as well. When a character is in this state, they will always walk at the angle of the last slope they touched, resetting whenever they're no longer "grounded" and picking a new slope angle when landing. It only resets upon death or full act transition, or when landing on top of another sprite-based object. If you ever find ways to trigger it consistantly, it could potentially save you a couple levels blocked by loops, though probably not routes blocked by objects.

Sonic then crashes into the enemy chest-first 4. The entire thing is slowen down so we can see what actually happens, the true perspective has all of this happen nearly instantly

Edit: You can't even beat it with cheating, First, I tried to get the 2nd controller to control Knuckles Second, had Knuckles jump on the switch Third, I attempted to fly under to no avail even with Super and Hyper also since 2P is currently Knuckles, you can't move Tails unless you are Tails, and the CPU is Sonic, and the A.I always jumps when you jump, so Sonic moves anyway.
probably, because this is a romhack, the game didn't know how to react when Sonic bounced off the spring while being grabbed by Tails, which confused the game in which sprite he was supposed to use. At least I think, I'm not a game developer.

It's kind of a result of Sonic being unable to change the "slope" he's standing at, which is what causes the effect at 39:57 where he lands on a slope and starts walking backwards into the floor, even though the curved slope should have set his angle back to the horizontal. He stops doing it at 40:20 because he lands on one of the see-saws, which are an object rather than a piece of the pure level geometry. There's Sonic 1 Decompilation, which let's you play the mobile port on PC. Even though its buggy, but still playable.
Problem is, two players aren't compatible in the decomp/mobile version. He would have to get Sonic to jump and press up to have Tails carry Sonic.

I did some testing, and you can beat it as Super Sonic and Super Tails due to Tail's speed being increased.

Using Sonic 2 on S&K gets you Knuckles in that game, but you can't access Sonic 1. Using the actual Sonic 1 just boots up Blue Sphere.

I'm enjoying these Tails carrying Sonic challenges a lot. I hope there be some hack of Sonic Cd with Tails able to carry Sonic so the fun can be extended after Sonic 2. I know there are codes to play as Sonic and Tails in the Gameboy Advance games, but I don't remember if Tails is able to carry him in those
In Marble Zone Act 2 and 3, there are glitches speedrunners use to skip each act, couldn't Tails have done that, or does that not work in this version?
