Today I provide an update on all the issues noted with my Emira up to the current period including the 3 initial main problems of the Windscreen, Climate Control and Engine Cover….Now there are multiple issues of concern with Lotus Services stating that a £10k solution is required just for a simple broken thread! What do you think about the Supercharger broken thread issue?
Sounds like classic lack of balls by mid management in both the dealer and Lotus. Given that any common sense re-tapping (as you yourself described) could then be used by either Lotus or Edlebrook to refute any further supercharger issues under warranty. Sounds like someone at Edlebrook needs to email Lotus and in turn the dealer to say "yeah, just re-tap it, it won't harm the supercharger". Sadly I see this common sense cowardice all the time in what prides itself in being a flexible, innovative engineering focused organisation...(not Lotus I must add, more defence related)
I had two coworkers, one with a 911 and another with a Boxster, both well taken care of, both whose cars suffered a complete engine failure. And it was not due to the IMS bearing issue. And the dealer wanted $5000 to tear down each engine to determine root cause. The owners instead chose to put that sum of money towards replacing each of their engines.

I’m going to add something. When I made a pre-launch enquiry about buying an Emira in Boston, I didn’t even get a call back from the dealer. I figured if they can’t be bothered sell me a car how could I rely on them for service? It’s also the reason I don’t have aGiulia Quadrafoglio in America. Neither company has the dealer support or technical skill to support the products sold here. And with Lotus (and it pains me to say this having grown up in England with them) that the company will have no heritage in future as they move t9 electric SUV’s. One of the reasons Harry Metcalf sold his I would imagine.
Lotus sources the supercharger from Edelbrock in El Segundo, California. It's their #1740 model and parts should be available from them direct. That complete supercharger direct from Edelbrock only costs somewhere between $5,000.00 and $6,000.00 USD. Of course, if you had to go that route, you'd have to swap the top cover with the Lotus cover for it to look exactly the same. Also, Whipple Superchargers, here in Californians, makes a much better supercharger than the Edelbrock that will fits the Lotus Emira as well. I'm fairly confident you could get the part you need for the Edelbrock supercharger direct from them.
I tried to order a smaller pulley from edelbrokc but they are on a non disclosure clause with Lotus so we have to go through them.... however, edelbrocl resellers aren't under such clause

Many, many, years ago my brother had a truly fabulous Lotus Elan 1 purchased as a kit and not a single issue, and i would absolutely love an Emira but i can do without the Lotus aggravation, so many thanks for the head up but not for me.
Bloody hell I thought seriously about getting an Emira, but sod that after watching this. Loved my S1 Elise 20 odd years ago, it was no trouble at all and often thinking it, maybe I should buy one of them for a fraction of the price.
Bypass Actuator is PN A142E6000H for £342.64 The bolt itself may be PN A142E6001H for £8.58 This is the black one, not silver as used on the Evora, yet mechanically the same thing. Unfortunately the Emira parts list is still in progress and doesn't list. Additionally, the service notes on either car do not give setup instructions.
@@RichReviews_ that's not what "warranty" means. It just means that Lotus should cover the cost of repair for any defect. In this case if you fixed it yourself using comparable parts they should stroke you a check (cheque) for the repair cost. Clickbait? The only problem with your supercharger is a broken external bolt, done by the muppet you let service your car before you bought it. Just shows the benefit of using proper service centres for a premium car.
He forgot to mention that occasionally the steering wheel falls off although strongly bolted to the rack and pinion flange, but not to worry because Lotus will replace the steering mechanism for free, and that is incredible customer service from them. Oh and final thing, the front skirt can possibly detach from the nose cone and wrap around the entire front window which can fully obscure your view, so they have designed a workaround where the skirts when they detach split in two and fall away on either side of the window minimizing any driver blindness. The skirt issue they charge a fee for as they have to saw the nose skirt in half and then clamp it together again with velcro
Sounds like this particular car is a bit of a dud. Maybe that`s why it was sold cheap. Ive had my Emira for over a year now, and not a peep of a problem showing up. I also know personally several other Emira owners and they report the same. Sorry your experience has not been the same.
Until it goes wrong. Hopefully it does not, in your case. All cars do go wrong at some point, but Lotus as a company look feckless at best, at dealing with them. I suspect that you have been lucky. So far, anyway.
I’ve been lucky with 4 new lotus cars I’ve bought since 2005. Still have a couple of them, and know the owners of the ones I’ve sold. They don’t have any problems with them. Seems like I’m just lucky. How many lotus cars have you owned?

Without doubt the best looking car Lotus have ever made, and as said, it looks like a supercar! However the list of faults means you have to be an understanding owner. Over some twenty years (1995 - 2015) i owned six new Jaguars, and each one had its own 'unique' issues, which required a certain amount of patience to resolve, but if i were in the situation regarding the engine valve, I would want to make sure that the enormous cost or rectification was pinned down to either the dealer or Lotus and i wasnt going to get caught in the middle!
another reason why my Cayman 4.0 GTS was the way to go....look....we all want to love Lotus. But they DON'T care. Once you realize that they forced the Emira out without full development, and then had to 'break the molds' because they are going all EV next year, you have a lame-duck car. No further work is going in to fixing the thing. It's pathetic, and I hope that their bet on EVs pays off. So far, the answer is 'no', as Porsche just admitted. My Cayman, BTW...runs every day, never an issue.
Difficult one this - you buy a Lotus specifically because it's not the 'snoozfest' ownership experience that you can get from so many different car brands. My own experience (27 years of ownership) is that you need to find someone who really knows what they're doing to look after the car. In my case it was an independent specialist (my experience of main dealer was dire). I also think that modern Lotus has tried to go up the ladder to a premium level and don't really have the support or experience of customer service required for that, even though the cars look great and go very well.
I hope Lotus watch your post and do the decent thing this is practically a new car I was thinking of trading in my GR86 for one of these but I think I will stick with my GR86
Thank you…yes the dealer is going to check the number plate alignment but from what I can see it looks to avoid the sensors and is central. In the worst case I have a smaller numbered registration to make a smaller plate but I’d prefer to leave the Emira reg if possible.
I had an Excel SE back in the day. Water went through the engine bay bulkhead by the throttle cable opening into the fuse box. The relays were upside down so the filled up with water. Then one headlamp would raise. I used a piece of tape to seal the Throttle cable. Excellent car but still a Lotus.
@@RichReviews_ none. But then again, I’m in the United States and the first batch of First editions were delivered to clients in April 2024. So maybe they worked out the kinks before customer delivery. I’m going on 7 months, 1,500 miles with mine and not a single issue
I had one on order but delays meant I cancelled. I bought a BMW i8 Roadster, have toured 22K miles around Europe, still loving the ownership experience. I did test an Emira, as it was starting to push, it hit the rev limiter, quite underwhelmed and spoilt with 570Nm of torque push with teh i8 Roadster. I'm sure I would enjoy taking an Emira across the Alps, but even more an Exige V6 Roadster. Hope the issues all get sorted, I just don't have the desire to get into this kind of experience anymore.
@@verynormalman don't really have a problem. We find there is enough space behind front seats as well as that in the boot. We use softbags as opposed to suitcases, jackets hang behind the seats.
Osmosis and cracked windscreens were an issue with McLaren 12Cs and 650s. What a shame these issues are spoiling the ownership experience. Lotus living up to its name: Lots of trouble usually serious.
I just found this channel and love your down to Earth, relaxed presenting Rich :)) I worked at Lotus in mechanical rectification. Let me know if you want info about the mechanics of the car or production process. Or horror stories 😬
I just cannot believe that you are enjoying the ownership proposition or even trying to big up its plus points. This is a disgrace of a car and brand and manufacturing process! And is just typical of the 'British car company" that was Lotus although of course it is now really Chinese. How comes nothing has changed in decades? It is a stunning looking car no doubt , but who cares? That is superficial. It is the deeper stuff that matters.
To be fair to Lotus I bought the car cheaper knowing it had the 3 main issues and found out about the other 6 smaller issues during ownership. I’m prepared to give Lotus the benefit of the doubt by seeing how they resolve these issues and though Lotus Customer Support have been poor, so far the dealer I’m liaising with has been great. Let’s see how they remediate the issues, the car goes in very soon now. I’ll report on the results.
For the window misting up, try cleaning the inside of the windscreen with glass cleaner and a microfiber cloth. Most cars will mist up with unclean class due to the variable temperatures and thus condensation. Glean glass will mist up less.
I wonder if Lotus had the same supercharger issue with the Evora that it has on the Emira. Sounds like Lotus needs two tough individuals on their team - the Manager of Supplier Quality Assurance and the Manager of Procurement. I would drive a defective car to the supplier of the supercharger and have them come up with an in situ repair and a design/modification for the failed parts on the supercharger to prevent future failures. The suppliers will kill sales of the cars if they don’t get the issues resolved quickly. It can’t get any easier to repair the fastener on the supercharger than that - the part is exposed and at the top of the engine.
The part that has been snapped is a thread that adjusts the start point of the waste gate actuator valve. I could repair myself with the correct replacement rod thread in less than an hour but that would void the warranty. It is bureaucracy at its worst but as I said in the video, I expect to be resolved in a sane manner.
While I have loved and admired Lotus you know it stands for "Lots Of Trouble Usually Serious" Have loved the Marque since the Esprit as a kid - this time I had so hoped they'd cracked it for a reliable, beautiful car Shame you've had so many problems - its such a beautiful spec and look and from what you are saying drives like a dream I note though, that Harry and Shmee150 moved theirs on very quickly despite effusing so much about it as a drivers car - Any thoughts?
Close the doors lotus, even though some muppet damaged this part which is a part for the life of the car, should still be available separately,it’s only a £20 part
We have a Lotus Elise - be careful where you take it - last time we took it for a major service we ended up taking it somewhere else to have the engine replaced!!!!! And Whilst we did reach an out of court settlement with the prior we were still out of pocket
@@RichReviews_ Kinda...they used the wrong sealant and so much of it on the sump that it overflowed on the inside and got into the engine...there were other issues too
So Lotus went with a high tech lid to save weight on an auto having gained over a thousand pounds since the Exige with less performance?! And not it is failing??!!
Unfortunately none of this is unique to Lotus. Today's cars have so much software that bugs and upgrades are part of the modern ownership experience. For example, Google the massive software problems owners are having with the new Volvo EX30.
I am hoping these have been sorted. I am aware the model was taken off sale for about 3 months and is now available again, to allow Volvo to sort it properly. Have just test driven a few and everything worked as normal including Apple CarPlay which has not been available for months. Still indefensible that cars are increasingly being sold with software bugs from the start.
Lotus have loads of unsold cars at an airport in Bedford which have been there for over a year which they can't sell 😮 the dealers don't want the used cars so Lotus just sell cheaply via auction to non lotus dealers loads on auto trader

@JasonPorter I agree, main dealerships no longer have engineers in their workshops they are Fitters of parts with little to no diagnostic skills.
No one repairs automobiles any more they just replace expensive shoddy rigged cheap parts these days. Never a simple fix.
@@JasonPorter yeah but it's killing the working class people. We're being robbed.

I don't care, I want one. I love that car. Stunning car but a track day special. People need to expect track car and evolving. They need to race these things.
Loved my S1 Elise 20 odd years ago, it was no trouble at all and often thinking it, maybe I should buy one of them for a fraction of the price.
that was a Lotus... an extension of ones mind
Bypass Actuator is PN A142E6000H for £342.64
The bolt itself may be PN A142E6001H for £8.58
This is the black one, not silver as used on the Evora, yet mechanically the same thing. Unfortunately the Emira parts list is still in progress and doesn't list. Additionally, the service notes on either car do not give setup instructions.
Thanks yes, accept what you say but the car is still under warranty therefore unfortunately I could not remediate.
@@RichReviews_ that's not what "warranty" means. It just means that Lotus should cover the cost of repair for any defect. In this case if you fixed it yourself using comparable parts they should stroke you a check (cheque) for the repair cost. Plus you get the bonus of being able to call them incompetent and have the literal receipts to show it.
@@JasonPorterthey're never for a quick fix. They'll try to make you pay for their mistakes ( that is for them buying weak rigged parts) they don't want anything to last to long.
This is the first car I have seen in ages that is an absolute must in yellow! What a GREAT design, a perfect middle ground between Ferrari OTT aero influence and the bland but functional NSX/Audi R8.
Couldn't agree more...well said.
Clickbait? The only problem with your supercharger is a broken external bolt, done by the muppet you let service your car before you bought it. Just shows the benefit of using proper service centres for a premium car.
‘Done by the Muppet I let service it’…recommend you rewatch the video to get the proper facts.
Great video for future Emira owners, at least we know what to ask the dealer before purchase...
Glad it was helpful for you.
Never heard of those issues with the Emira.
Nice review. I am planning to buy a used one and looking at your videos seriously considering 3l Supra.
Carry on and watch the Emira video series to conclusion...it turns out better than you probably think. :)
Thanks for posting. Think I will stick with my Evora :)
@@davidsparavec8996you have earlier car before car companies became crooks. In this day and age the car corporate theives know how to make super great reliable cars. But there's no money in it.
Why do people keep saying they're "filming"?
I want to know what brand of film they are using.
It is an old celluloid term that has become fixed in minds as a description for creating film content...hence filming.
@@RichReviews_ I get that, but it is no longer relevant. Like the old phone handset a symbol for making a call. Or a floppy for saving data.
Virtually no one uses film anymore.
I'm 70 and wish people would accept change and live in the farking present.
So does my Emira....and?
Difficult one this - you buy a Lotus specifically because it's not the 'snoozfest' ownership experience that you can get from so many different car brands. My own experience (27 years of ownership) is that you need to find someone who really knows what they're doing to look after the car. In my case it was an independent specialist (my experience of main dealer was dire). I also think that modern Lotus has tried to go up the ladder to a premium level and don't really have the support or experience of customer service required for that, even though the cars look great and go very well.
I hope Lotus watch your post and do the decent thing this is practically a new car
I was thinking of trading in my GR86 for one of these but I think I will stick with my GR86
I honestly believe the car to be inherently good, it is Lotus services that is poor.
Keep watching, there is a twist in the tale.
See my post above yours. You might reconsider. Nothing wrong with a Gr86 though..great car.
Lost my sale at the body panel issues. Ferrari has their sticky buttons and leather dash issues so not doing that either
Check your number plate is not in front of the parking sensor. Sorry to see your having so many issues guess I have been lucky with mine.
Thank you…yes the dealer is going to check the number plate alignment but from what I can see it looks to avoid the sensors and is central.
In the worst case I have a smaller numbered registration to make a smaller plate but I’d prefer to leave the Emira reg if possible.
My Excel never let me down and I really used it loads drove it everywhere
I had an Excel SE back in the day. Water went through the engine bay bulkhead by the throttle cable opening into the fuse box. The relays were upside down so the filled up with water. Then one headlamp would raise. I used a piece of tape to seal the Throttle cable. Excellent car but still a Lotus.
@@julianlord2697 Other than that…I must have been lucky then🤣

Going on almost a year with my Emira and I haven’t had a single issue
That's really good to hear. Have you taken all the recalls?
@@RichReviews_ none. But then again, I’m in the United States and the first batch of First editions were delivered to clients in April 2024. So maybe they worked out the kinks before customer delivery. I’m going on 7 months, 1,500 miles with mine and not a single issue
Yes most of the issues would have been worked out by then.
How do you cope with the luggage storage problem? It put me off buying an i8
@@verynormalman don't really have a problem. We find there is enough space behind front seats as well as that in the boot. We use softbags as opposed to suitcases, jackets hang behind the seats.
I had the same issue for window and sos. The SOS is a pain.
Latest firmware now installed to mine today...will provide an update on the changes.
Total madness the number of things wrong with this car.
Osmosis and cracked windscreens were an issue with McLaren 12Cs and 650s. What a shame these issues are spoiling the ownership experience. Lotus living up to its name:

so if you get a flat tyre you must replace the car,
Slight exaggeration. 😂
Looks like the LOTUS acronym still applies.
For the window misting up, try cleaning the inside of the windscreen with glass cleaner and a microfiber cloth. Most cars will mist up with unclean class due to the variable temperatures and thus condensation. Glean glass will mist up less.
Yes but screen being replaced as one of the issues soon and will keep inside cleaned regularly from that point forward.
If you make a part from bread it won't work but it would be light
While I have loved and admired Lotus you know it stands for "Lots Of Trouble Usually Serious"
Have loved the Marque since the Esprit as a kid - this time I had so hoped they'd cracked it for a reliable, beautiful car
Shame you've had so many problems - its such a beautiful spec and look and from what you are saying drives like a dream
I note though, that Harry and Shmee150 moved theirs on very quickly despite effusing so much about it as a drivers car - Any thoughts?
Think I have heard that before. 😆
Looks like Lotus hasn't changed for the past 50 years. 😂
Will stick with the TVR then…
Close the doors lotus, even though some muppet damaged this part which is a part for the life of the car, should still be available separately,it’s only a £20 part
So when you buy Lotus you spend most of the time in service.
I think best coupe or convertible to enjoy trouble free is Lexus LC 500.
Carry on and watch the Emira video series to conclusion...it turns out better than you probably think. :)
why paid 10,000 if the factory warranty is for 3 years ?
As I detailed in the video...this is what Lotus initially stated was the solution.
LOTUS = ALBA. A Little Broken Always
Lotus no no for me stick to a cayman
We have a Lotus Elise - be careful where you take it - last time we took it for a major service we ended up taking it somewhere else to have the engine replaced!!!!! And Whilst we did reach an out of court settlement with the prior we were still out of pocket
Wow! What did they do to the engine? Forget to put oil in before starting?
@@RichReviews_ Kinda...they used the wrong sealant and so much of it on the sump that it overflowed on the inside and got into the engine...there were other issues too
So Lotus went with a high tech lid to save weight on an auto having gained over a thousand pounds since the Exige with less performance?! And not it is failing??!!
It's not an automatic it's a manual.
The true last lotus was the S3 Exige/Elise!!!
Lotus have loads of unsold cars at an airport in Bedford which have been there for over a year which they can't sell 😮 the dealers don't want the used cars so Lotus just sell cheaply via auction to non lotus dealers loads on auto trader
Thanks for the update. Mine is going in to have the work performed soon including the latest firmware.
