The best Bakewell Tart I had in England was at a fundraising function for the local church. We were touring the church and picked up a few different things to have later. Everything was made by the congregation. The Bakewell Tart looked so good I took a nibble in the car and we ended up eating the whole thing then and there and went back in to buy the lot!
Definitely make this tart with amaretti crumbled biscuits. I don't buy ceramic beans but when I go to the beach, I pick up small, white stones, bring them home, pop them into a pot of water, bring it to the boil and leave to boil for about 20 minutes, that way all bacteria is killed. I store them in a tin, ready for use, does the trick.
Sounds like a great addition with the amaretti biscuits! I would caution to avoid removing shells, rocks, etc. from the beach as this can significantly disrupt the ecosystem. Shells and stones provide homes and hiding places for animals, and even help anchor seagrass.
Two things about the recipe, Darren: That pastry recipe ratio works incredibly well. My oven is erratic so I've always got to 'interpret' UA-cam recipes. Yours worked first time without any alterations. Secondly, using amaretti biscuits is a stroke of genius. I've been making Bakewell tarts for 40 years and never once thought of altering the recipe. But the moment I saw what you did, I thought it was so simple it had to work. So, I tried it last night - stroke of genius man, stroke of genius. It's one of those things that's just perfect. Many, many, many thanks.
You and Winston and your wonderful videos of deliciousness are my new found addiction. I found you by watching the Royal kitchen videos. Thank you for all the delight
Always love your videos with the classical recipes I use to eat when I studied in the UK. Such good memories. Chef, you are amazing. I deeply thank you.
Isabel, I second your comment. Darren makes everything look tasty, easy to do, fun and above all, an understanding of why he adds what he does to the recipe. He isn't just a chef...he is a teacher with lots to share!
My husband took me to Bakewell and treated me to some Bakewell Tart from one of those shops. They were gorgeous, and now thanks to you, I can make an attempt to make them myself! Thanks x
I've made two dishes of yours - Parsnip Soup and Stuffed Bell peppers - Princess Diana's favorites. They were both excellent. I also made not from here, Apple Crumble with homemade custard. Delish on all of them!
Wow, I make Bakewell Tarts every Christmas for some of my English friends (and me as well) ...mine are a little different....pastry on the bottom, raspberry jam, almond flavoured cake and when cooled, I spread an Almond Glaze over the top with a half of Marachino Cherry on the top. I am going to try your recipe soon though, for myself and my English roots!
I adore that Bakewell pudding story. It reminds me of the Juicy Lucy in the Eastern USA. There are two shops that both claim to be the originator of the Juicy Lucy sandwich. But no one actually knows which one did it first.
Dear Royal Chef Darren thank you for sharing this video I love all your videos and wanted to say we have always enjoyed eating these little mini cakes we'd buy from our supermarket in Australia and wondered how they could taste almost exactly like home backed cakes. Then when you mentioned Mr Kipling we saw that those cakes are Mr Kipling cakes we've enjoyed 🎂 🥮 I look forward to baking this recipe:)
Thank you chef Darren for the Bakwell tart video, watching you make that took me back to my chefing days many moons ago in Baslow in the early 90s where we used to make eccles cakes n Derbyshire Oakcakes some of the old traditional good foods. Thank you Chef
Loved watching this - made my first one after 40 years of my husband asking me to make one 'because his Mom did every Christmas'. I think mine turned out really well - but he is insisting that there was topping on it that was white - but NOT icing - and not just icing sugar. He's pretty sure it was a bumpy white topping. My guess is that it was indeed icing, and the "bumps" were from the almonds underneath. If you've heard of anything different other than icing, or the icing sugar, I sure would be open to attempting this again next Christmas.
Thank you Darren! I just made this tart yesterday and it was amazing! I also baked amaretti as I couldn’t find it at the store nearby. The tart was really easy to make and was tasty. I’m hoping to try to make more things that you are showing in your channel :)
HA!! The folded parchment paper trick is something I’ve NEVER seen in 50 years of cooking and baking! Absolutely genius and I give all the credit to you (as well as for this delicious tart! Imagine, being able to make the same something served to the Royals! Thank you, sir!)
Bakewell, Manchester and egg custard tarts are still my favorites today. Cherry bakewells are smashing with a cuppa. Hiya from Liverpool via nw Florida I do miss your “tatty ed” 👍🏼😂
Try Shortbread Gingerbread Rock cakes Fairy cakes Toffee Cake Fruit cake/Fruit Loaf Bara Brith Barm Brack Sussex pond pudding Spotted dick..... To name just a few
Yes, the medieval chefs really should have gone to their local supermarket and gotten fresh fruit that had just been shipped in on aeroplanes from all over the world. Shame on them!
The use of stone fruit jam and almond topping is economical and therefore the type of thing I would actually do. The strawberry jam and crushed cookies sounds like a Mormon version of Amerindian berry pie, so the queen had the most traditional way.
Darren, your Instagram post about K Steward's great performance in "Spencer" just made it on Kimmel as Jimmy was interviewing Kristen Stewart! Didn't see it coming! It was great.
I love the story of Prince Phillip about to eat ceramic beans! hahaha. Lovely video as usual. I'm a British expat in Asia, and I miss a good Mr Kipling bakewell tart with some hot custard! I mean, I can buy it here where I live, but it's usually three times the price and it's not the same as eating them when I was growing up. These videos make my day! Thank you
I’m so inspired to try making this. Thank you for sharing this great recipe! I can’t wait to try this one out😊! I really enjoy the short recollections and cute gimmicks. Now this is one of my favourite cooking channels and I’m looking forward to what comes next.
Pâte sucrée + jam + frangipane + amaretto biscuits. I've saved you 11'. You can perfectly substitute almond essence with Amaretto liquor.
Loved the story about Prince Philip! :) I'm a big fan of plums as well

Hi! I don't have a food processor, do you think the pastry can be made with the KitchenAid?
@@r.d.8172 Absolutely, I interchange my KitchenAid and food processor all the time, when I am making pastry. You could also make it by hand.
Stroke of Genius!
You and Winston and your wonderful videos of deliciousness are my new found addiction. I found you by watching the Royal kitchen videos. Thank you for all the delight
I love making an orange bakewell. I do an iced top with zest and almonds with an orange filling. It's my go-to autumn dessert

I would imagine it’s normally served cold? That jam is like lava if eaten too soon.
