I just found your videos when I was looking at the Palm Beach Presser site. Love your analysis of comics. I do a lot of the same thing. I am intrigued with your spreadsheets! Are these available anywhere? I am new to the hobby and have grown to quickly love it. To fund the hobby I have to buy and sell in order to get the ones I want for my personal collection. I really like the way you analyze the values. I am definitely watching more of your videos. Keep them up!

Thank you! I appreciate the feedback and definitely recommend sending your books to PBP if you need them pressed. My spreadsheets are not available as I don't feel they are fit for use by everyone. I tried granting access to some of them through a UA-cam Channel Membership program, but it became very time consuming for me to support shared spreadsheets. I hope one day to offer a different interface that incorporates some of the formulas I have built. I'm also working on a "values companion" that I hope to share out sooner than later. I like your approach of funding the hobby through the hobby itself. It's a fun and cost-effective way to enjoy collecting comics.

If you have the money to blow, and this makes you happy, go for it. But I see it kind of like taking your money to go gamble in Vegas. If you lose it all, but you enjoyed yourself, maybe it's worth it. Mile High's prices are ridiculous most of the time, and these are big key books that the majority of collectors even care about slabbing. And you probably will only truly add any type of ROI on your resale if you actually do get a 9.8, But then again, look at the slabbed market right now. Not looking good. Great spreadsheets and analytics, though.

Thank you! All great points. For me, this hobby is just a hobby, so I do look at it a bit like using some discretionary income for entertainment purposes. What I try to do is not just walk up to a random slot machine, but target a table game or another betting technique that gives me the best odds and chance at success. I think we all have to factor in not only how we enjoy the hobby, but be honest about what you're good at as well. Accumulating books over time with no real plan can be dangerous for me, so I want to be more precise with how I attack and plan out how I collect.

Right now, slabbing a comic isn't even on my radar. For instance, I've seen many CGC-graded comics that clearly aren't 9.8, with visible color breaks on the spine and dinged corners in the posted photos. I've even sent books to CGC that I was certain were 9.8, only for them to come back as 9.6 without any grader notes. When will comic collectors see that CGC is a scam?

The REAL collectors know it's a scam. All these people do is shill for CGC.

Fantastic order! Stevens will always be hot imo, so they're a solid addition to any collection. I salivated at your spreadsheet, sorry. I may start calling you professor. What a great point you make about Mile High treating all books the same. That may be the final push I needed to navigate their Prodigy site.

Ha! Prodigy. Haven't thought about that service in awhile. I can hear my dial-up modem now! I'm pretty sure that was my last Vanguard Illustrated Stevens issue I ordered. I must have bought seven of them over the last year. Now MHC lists it for $300 (before coupon) which seems outrageous. At this point, I need to decide if I'm going to chase a nice (or any) copy of Planet Comics.

I’m curious how you do that spreadsheet and get those grade/values to import like that. Is that something that CP provides?

I created my own secondary values lookup workbook. I regularly update the values in that workbook, using Covrprice and other sources. I created formulas that help me set average values across those sources. I update that workbook for the books that are part of the unboxing so that the values are current when I record the video.

@@MoneyballComics sounds like a ton of leg work on that end.

Great video! I think the thing I’m stuck on most is why you had that package sit around for a year without opening it. Why and how?

Thanks! I ask myself the same thing! Some of it is personal scheduling and then the box gets lots in my queue of things to open up. I will not allow myself to open an order if I'm not ready to grade, sort, catalog, and store each book. Some of it is just laziness on my part, but also my own stubbornness related to how I collect.

Hmmm, where have I seen those books before? 🧐 Oh yeah, they are on my desk right now! I know how they turned out after pressing! 🤐🤫😉 Stay tuned in UA-cam land!

Yes! Can't wait to get these back from CGC. Hopefully they'll be nice and flat and free of creasing from the inner wells!
