- Ford 6.2 liter gas V8s with broken valve springs may want to reference this video when tearing into their vehicle. Hey family welcome back!! Tonight I know that it is not a Powerstroke but LOTS of my customers have fleets of these vehicle with the 6.7 and 6.2. There is a need to repair them all and to get them back safely on the road. Drop me a line and tell me what you think in the comment section below. Have you had your valve springs replaced on your 6.2?? Was it the exhaust or the intake? Did you do it, or did a shop do it?

I recommend using a ratchet strap to hold the handle of the compression tool. I was exhausted too watching you fight those keepers and hold a bind on the compression tool 😂. Good job, great video 👍

I’ve always remove the spark plug and feed in starter rope to fill the cylinder then rotate the piston till it’s compresses the rope against the valves to hold them in place. After the spring repair turn the engine backwards and pull the rope out.
Yeah that's the way I always do it I don't trust shop air, all it takes is for somebody to accidentally disconnect it or the hose to blow apart and now you're pulling a cylinder head........
@@lustfulvengance Yes, it can also push the piston down. I have a 90s 32v 4.6L DOHC, I've replaced one or two. Wasn't a widespread problem and they never damage the head. Quite similar to this, I bet the special cam shaft pivot tool would even work.
What kind of rope? Can you reply please?

ratchet strap across the engine to whatever your handle is for the compressor. I use a breaker or ratchet because mine has a 1/2” square drive on it. Saves your arms and sanity.

FYI always bring the piston to TDC when removing valve springs, that way in case the air hose blows or something else happens the valve can't fall out, BTW great video and for a 90k engine it's clean on the inside.

Can pack some rope in cylinder too. Then valve isnt going anywhere. I have recoil rope for the old school way of doing it.
Great job an actually raw video when it's actually shown how hard it's this kind a job even with the right tools.
Did one of mine today....PIA for a home mechanic used the one valve compressor had to screw it as tight as I could then tighten it up to get enough pull to make spring small enough for keepers to go in...
Man I know you’re the pro but I think that spring compressor made the job three times harder than it needed to be. The single spring tool has always worked like a breeze for me.

In the mid 90s the 32V 4.6L engines had this issue. They had two special tools for the intake and exhaust. The 2V also could use one of them, this is similar. Never any engine damage. The older Ford 2Vs also needed valve seal service, of course similar procedure. They never had spring issues.
Use a ratchet strap hooked into the top hole by the handle then attach the other end to a good anchor point and use the ratchet to tighten and hold the spring down freeing up both your hands while positioning the keepers. 👍
First off, yet another EXCELLENT video for my routine Friday night viewing pleasure. Second, admittedly I haven't needed to do too many broken valve spring replacements THANKFULLY. But the ones I do recall doing are one in a 5.0 Coyote V8 most recently in a Mustang GT, and I believe a couple 5.4s and 4.6s prior to that. For all the years the 6.2 has been out, this is the very first time I've seen one with the valve cover off. Can you believe that? That should speak to its reliability. Speaking of 6.2s, Ford apparently has released an FSA for a few trucks that mistakenly made it into production with oversized pistons if you can believe that. The letter is 20U28 I believe. Want a helping hint? Next time you're into one of these, or for anyone else who's into one of these for that matter, some Vaseline around the valve keepers will aid in having the keepers adhere to the valve stem during the extremely tedious installation process. For very obvious reasons, someone who suffers from the dropsies will not want to take on this repair.

My 6.2 wouldn't go past 20mph without bogging down leaving a Chem trail for miles. Oil gushing through the exaust system. I need to work on my triceps after watching this struggle lol. Great job man!
Yeah I wish mine had been this easy, mine dropped the valve, piston in pan with wrist pin and half a connecting rod. Was pulling trailer at around 65mph up hill when it let go, $7K later I got me engine.

Man, that was a toughy, I used that single spring compressor you mentioned so I was able to use two hands on my 4.2L when a spring broke. But it was cyl #1 so right there at the front!
I bought a 2019 f250 crew cab long bed mid 2020. I was going to get the new gas 7.3 but figure I would wait a while. I choose the 6.2 because its been out a while and feel most of the bugs should have been fixed by now. I'm sure ill have issues just like any other vehicle does. Just hoping Its not for a long time. Great video thanks for sharing. About what would it cost for the service you just did?
first on the vehicle valve spring I did was on a gen 1 hemi, valve dropped on me like yours did but I wasn't luck, tried for 2 hours to fish that valve back up, had to pull the head. I heard a trick from an old timer, instead of air, fill the cylinder with rope through the plug hole and then bring the piston up, I haven't tried it, never had rope around when the job needed done.

My guy, just use a pair of small needle noses with the magnet connected to them. Works a lot better than trying to do it with just a magnet by itself.

I like using valve spring compressors that clamp on just the spring. The one you use requires you to keep constant pressure on the spring with one hand while you try to install the keepers with the other wearing you out.

Been there before not fun at all! I use pocket screwdriver method also but put grease on end of screwdriver and keeper so not fighting magnetic and helps keeper stay attached to valve stem while doing second keeper. Nice job man 👍

Boy you really struggled with those keepers, have you tried using surgical forceps?? Or even using bearing grease to hold them on the end of screw driver or something like that??

I would have compressed that spring and put a motorcycle strap on the handle of that tool. Or even something between the handle and the inner fender to hold it. 😅
I’m surprised you’re not using grease on the inside of the keeper to help aide in keeping the keeper in place as you put them back on the valve.

Man that was an awesome video, thanks for showing exactly how it could be done. I know you needed to wiggle the tool sometimes but do you think you could of rigged a chain with a turnbuckle to hold it once you had it pretty close to set. No way could I have held it that long without frustration setting in and dropping those keepers. Well anyway thanks so much for a good job.

I did one and the guy who did it before lock tighted the valve cover doors down.... and all snapped even with heat... removing the broken bolts were worse then the valve spring replacement itself

Good video, you really could have used some help getting those keepers in? I'm sure its hard to find a helper if you all are on book hour pay!
Next time goop the inside of the keeper in grease…….you can also do what I do take a dab of grease on the flat of the screwdriver and it gives you a better angle. Also ratchet strap the the handle of your compressor so you have two free hands….
I did one time on the 5.0 it took me 3 days with no tools just with home made tools I was so stressed out doing that i think is not easy the magnet always bring the cone back

i would drag a screw driver over a magnet and magnetize the screwdriver,, just enough to hold keeper,,, using a magnet is to strong as demonstrated in vid ,, enjoyed watching you struggle as i have myself at times,, lol
ive done this a dozen times on a 351 400 460 ,, all i did was break a spark plug and welded it to a small tube and had an air end welded at the other end total length was 8 inches , then made a lever bar 6 inches and cut out the one end like a fork,, so i could put it on a rocker stud and put a nut on the top of my bar i made the fork one,, and yes i did drill a hole so i could fit it over the stud,, the putting a coat hanger in the spark plug hole ,,to see if the pistong was up all the way ,, on the COMPRESSION stroke , so i put the air to 80 lbs,, press down on the lever and take the keepers out,, change the spring and when putting back the keepers ,, USE YOUR BARE HADS ,,hey not to say you didnt do a good job but on this one get rid of those blue goves ,, BE a MAN,

What's causing the broken springs on these engines? Lack of oil? I've watched different videos on these 6.2s, and it seems all cylinders are prone to valve spring break. I thought it was just the springs on the back 2 cylinders. Is this turning out to be a common problem for the Ford 6.2? I am (was) considering buying a Super Duty with the 6.2. Not so sure about that now.

Hey just saw your 6.2 valve spring replacement. I'm doing the same thing on a 2015 250 6.2 my 78yr old dad bought on line. I'm not a mechanic but am mechanically inclined do you have to remove th entire fuel rail off the valve cover on drivers side?
Could you have used a 6 point socket and a breaker bar on the end of that tool shaft to gain more leverage?

Oh, right on, I thought you were working up top and rotating the tool handle toward the middle of the engine bay to compress the spring.
Why didn't you put a breaker bar on the tool on that square by the handle to increase leverage.

Maybe you need more leverage or a helper might me time efficient?
Next time bring the piston down a little ways and fill the cylinder with string then bring the piston back up to hold the valves shut, much better than air!

Seeing information, they say that the 6.2 gasoline engine breaks the valve springs. The question is, how many kilometers or miles do the valve springs break? of that 6.2 l question is to prevent changing springs before their time that they break and cause serious problems in the engine

Great Job ! But that tool was way too much hardware and over complicated the repair . 1 Piece valve spring compressor would have been much simpler.

If one spring break at 100,000 miles, should the dealer replace all if it's under warranty? What's the chance of another spring failing if you replace only the broken spring?

If number three cylinder would’ve been top dead center and the valve fell in would it fall all the way through, that would be good insurance if that is true and by making sure you’re on top dead center that would prevent you from having to pull the head in case the cylinder was all the way down

You would think that a tool manufacturer would have made that thing where you could lock it in place once spring is compressed. Something as simple as a cam gear and paw to lock it in place Tool manufactures need to do better
Yea i feel ya...but you almost have to manipulate the spring & keepers with the small up & down motions of the tool going up & down..
Done a few of these, some aren’t so lucky. Always seems to be cylinder 6 or 7. #dropdemvalves
Mine did 7 8 and 2 at different times. Lucky me when 8 broke it dropped and put 2 holes in the block. Put a used 90000 mile motor in it and 2 weeks later 8 broke again.Put 16 new springs in it and 2 months later looks like another has broke. There has got to be something better then these ford springs!!!!
The Struggle is real. I have the other tool and it's super hard and next to impossible to use. I dread changing those springs. I will definitely be looking to purchase that tool for future use. Looks alot easier to use. Thanks for the heads up on the tool.
