Automower Answers: Automower Boundary Wire! What we recommend and why we recommend it

- In this episode we answer the question of what wire we use and recommend for the boundary and guide wire system for Husqvarna Automowers. We get asked this question a lot and we see it posted in social media groups where the answers are all over the board. To be fair, it can be confusing when talking about Husqvarna boundary wire because they have 2 completely different types of black wire, and the Husqvarna orange pro wire isn't as heavy duty as the heavy black wire. So lets start with the 2 types of black wire from Husqvarna.
The thin black wire that comes in spools of less than 500 meters and is used in installation kits and packaged in mowers that include DIY install supplies is the UV wire. This wire is made to withstand the sun beating down on it which was a HUGE downfall of the old green wire when it was stapled above ground. The green wire's insulation would crack and break apart causing corrosion to form and the bare wire to ground out and cause no loop errors. The black UV wire can also be buried underground.
The thicker black wire that comes in 500 meter spools is Husqvarna's black HD (Heavy Duty) wire. This is the best all around wire to use for robotic mower boundary wire. This wire has a strong hefty insulation on it which does a great job at keeping moisture out and resists cracking and breaking like the old green wire.
The Husqvarna orange pro wire looks like it is a thick heavy duty wire, but it actually is not. It is a thin wire with black insulation and an added layer of insulation on top of that. The reason for the orange insulation over top of the black insulation is that the orange insulation is non soy based. So if you have problems with squirrels, deer, skunks, etc digging up and chewing through your boundary wire then this is the answer for you.
One important note is that all 3 of these types of wire from Husqvarna carry a 2 year warranty when properly installed with a new Automower.

Thanks for this video. I have to replace 1700 feet of the green wire. A tree that I ran a loop around was struck by lightning and blasted all 1700 feet out of the ground, blew up the charging station, and also blew up the power supply. The mower itself was not harmed. Needless to say, I'm not happy about this. I still have some green wire leftover but I think I'll just get the black you recommend and keep the green for backup.
Please advise What is the diameter of the HD wire?
The old black uv wire was about 2mm?

Is it the case that the greater the boundary length, the more important it is to have larger diameter wire such as the heavy duty one you show as there is less electrical resistance in larger diameter wire. Also, I have found that when trying to identify breakages in the wire a low voltage cable detector tool really struggles to pick up the buried SMALL black wire whereas it SEEMS (I am still trying to problem-solve) around picks up the larger diameter wire a lot more easily. This must surely be something that buyers need to consider when they install their systems as it is inevitable that breakages will occur. Your comments on this would be very much appreciated!! 😁
Also, is the heavy duty black wire you show 2.7mm or 3.4mm??
Great video. I have a run of that green wire used as my guide for my 315X and I realize it's flimsy as compared to the black wire that came with my install. Is it possible that I could do the swap test and get a solid green light but my mower won't follow the (green) guide? It was not following the guide at the start of the season then I found and fixed a break that and thought I was done. Still won't follow the guide at all though. I notice that when I use my Kolsol wire locator, sometimes the signal seems to not be on the wire but to the left or right of the wire, wondering if it could be stretched or just as you pointed out, defective in some way.
Any opinion on the 14 gauge Extreme Consumer Products Universal Heavy Duty Automatic Lawnmower Boundary Wire sold on Amazon? I hate the idea of burying a black wire that will be difficult to find later for fixes. Husqvarna warranty is no longer applicable for me.

Kinda confused about the animal situation. You say you use the black HD wire virtually all the time. But then you say the pro wire is built to keep animals from eating the wire...implying that they would eat the HD wire? I have a ton of deer and squirrels. That is extremely common in the US. Are they going to eat my wire if I use the HD? If so I would think you'd use the pro wire a lot more...so is that just a non issue? Some clarity around the animal hazards would be most welcome. Thanks.
We have deer, racoons, squirrels, skunks, and lots of other wildlife all around us and we have not had an issue with animals eating the wire in our area. But people have had that issue enough for Husqvarna to come out with the pro wire that has a non soy based insulation over the original insulation. The double layer of insulation makes it very hard to find a break if only the inner wire is broken and the outer layer of insulation is still solid. Most people that have had issues with animals eating other wires on items like Christmas decorations or landscape lighting so they know they are going to have issues and will go with the pro wire.

Is the black HD wire UV resistant too?
We have been using it for 3 years now and have not had any issues with it cracking and breaking when stapled above ground.
What is the max depth of each of these wires (UV vs HD vs MeyerWire)?
That's a great question that there is no definitive answer for. The reason why there isn't a solid across the board answer is because of all the variables from one installation to another. The more wire you use in your boundary loop the weaker the signal gets so lets say that you stay below the 800 meter suggested limit for wire in your boundary wire. Then your signal will still be strong and you can bury it deeper with good results compared to a boundary system with say 1,000 meters of wire in it. The next variable would be what the wire is being buried in, ran through, or ran under. If you are running under a driveway or sidewalk there can be a signal loss depending how thick the pavement or cement is. In most cases you can go 6 - 8 inches before you would experience signal loss. And I should point out that it would be a loss of signal in wide open areas where the mower is 70 feet or more from any of the boundary wires. In narrow areas the signal loss typically does not affect the mower's performance because it is closer to the wire that is transmitting the signal and if the mower is within 60 - 65 feet of a boundary wire on either side of it then it have an even easier time sensing the signal. So there really isn't one that we can say can be buried deeper than the other without signal loss.
Does this HD wire work with the standard connectors?
The black HD wire works with the 3M weatherproof connectors, but I would not recommend using it with the purplish colored connectors for on the base station. I would use crimp on connectors for connecting to the charging station

I just purchased my 450xh a week ago along with the DIY kit (large). Kit came with the green wire so...evidently Husqvarna is still putting the green wire in their kits?
If it came with green wire I'm guessing that you bought it from a dealer that just had old inventory sitting around because it has been a few years since they put green wire in an install kit.
@RoboticMowerServices yes it did come with green wire, the box says 2018 on it. The mower, I'm guessing is a 2019 because the first two digits of the serial number is 19. I bought this in early September this year and just recently found out this information through you tube videos. Tomorrow (Monday) I'm going to where I got it from and pitch a bit of a bitch

It's good wire, but not in the same class as MeyerWire
Well technically MeyerWire is not in the same class because it is not covered by Husqvarna's 2 year warranty. In the test area where we used MeyerWire we found that the insulation was too hard for a few of the 3M connectors and caused the metal part of the connector to crack and cause signal loss.
