- SAILING truth about the Kiwis
We have been sailing south towards Langkawi with a full crew on Javelot our live aboard catamaran. We are en-route back to Rebak Island Marina for repairs to our Yanmar sail-drive boots which despite assurances that they were stuck for good started peeling the moment we hit the water. And it's all change to the crew. Having tolerated seasickness our entire sail our friends Claire and Adam abandon ship on the beautiful Island of Koh Lipe. Back on dry land they reveal the truth about sailing with the Kiwis in our celebration of boat life.

BACK STORY
In 1997, after rowing at the Atlanta Olympics, Rob rowed a tiny 7m (22 foot) plywood boat 2,500 miles from Tenerife (Canary Islands) to Barbados (Caribbean). It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race.
Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of.
The plan? To sail around the world.
Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz

Oh I just love this channel, I don’t understand why it doesn’t have the number of viewers like Zatara or SV Delos but hopefully it will get there. Cheers ! On a good note you have 20k+!
Thank you. If you are a member of any sailing forums feel free to mention us 🤩
Oh, I do it all the time!@@TheCruisingKiwis
Thank you
Rob, I feel your pain. I hate it when someone openers the fridge door and stands there, or worse the freezer. I have been known to shut it while someone is looking. Leaving lights on is another pet peeve of mine and we live on land.
You and Rob are cut from the same cloth add to the list leaving doors open in the winter and letting out the heat (a land based peeve) and leaving the wifi on at night.
😆 Leaving the wifi on.
@@someguy9778for real😊
Growing up in a low income household not one day would go by without hearing:
Where you born in a tent?!?
and my favourite.....
Standing there looking at it wont make it leave the fridge any faster...close the bloody door!
Rob and my parents were the same. Is turning lights off when you leave a room becoming a lost art?
It seems so! I akso do understand Rob about saving water.
One of your best Rachel! Really entertaining ❤
Yeah, we had excellent talent to work with. 👏
Hey guys. Some people seem to think because you can produce your own power and water onna boat, it's unlimited. A bit extreme though turning it off and leaving the poor woman with a head full of shampoo. Still. Lesson learned. I was one of six kids too Rachel, but I don't miss the noise.
Where you the eldest Owen? I think if you're one of the first born the changes in noise level as each subsequent sibling appears probably makes the chaos harder to bear. When you're the last you have no other reference so noise is good :)
@@TheCruisingKiwis second oldest. What made it worse was as a teenager I had bad migraines, so a noisy house, which ours was, was not a good thing. It got better when we got sleepouts.
i sent a comment to another fellow, Teal. He had some jellyfish issues as well. If you put on a pair of nylon stockings, (netted) the jellyfish will ignore you.. Hello folks!!
Fab!
Thanks Brett.
Great vlog!! Nice seeing how Ivan keeps taking care of his "younger bro" (or mini Ivan), and not loosing a second to be himself showing off haha.
How complicated is to move around those countries with so many things... didn't quite got the problem with bikes, (so easy to take them on the ferry!). At leat it gave you another oportunitty to show how you help others.
For tge diving, though it was the dirtiest so far, it was still awesome as Clint said. It is always impressive to see that magnificent, colorful and strange world.
About the sustainability, maybe you should do a vlog about how you try to make the less possible impact on your sailing trips.
I'll try to get back on my binge through your past adventures, see if I can catch up soon.
Safe journeys, good winds!
Thanks VicuSan. Some good ideas there,
@@TheCruisingKiwis Glad to help ;)
As always love it!
Thank you Finn!
Happy 30th Rob! 😉
If only 😀
That was the most colorful reef i have seen in recent years - shame so murky.
The colours and fish life would have put this dive in our top ten if only the water had been clear.
Thank you for sharing your lives with us! Safe travels ❤
You are most welcome
Rachel i like your shower sketch. Things like that happen on land so hey, no big bother
But big Rob lurks always😉
Great video again. I always love the underwater photography even if it was a bit murky. Some interesting views in the interviews. Living in a house always makes me be a bit wasteful especially with water. Keep well and safe. James.
Thanks James, Adam was exaggerating about 4.5 seconds fridge time. It's 6 seconds.
You guys are so 😎 ❤
Ha 😊 cheers guys!
Thanks Trev!
😅😅😅😅 another entertaining vblog
Loved the posh hotel room a bit of luxury now and again is great for you.
Thanks for sharing
Safe travels 🙏
Cheers from the Tron team 😊😊😊😊
A great wrap-up.. God bless
Thank you Jim
Rob, we have a Bahia and the previous owner had plastic strips he made up to go over the edges of the Sail Drive boots & then drilled and screwed them on to hold the boots in place. Works pretty well, but I reckon the boots are pretty useless, we still get barnacles and stuff up above the boots. I have talked to a couple of other FP owners who got sick of dealing with them and just got rid of them altogether! One has not had them for 10 years! They reckon its actually easier to keep it clean in there and had no noticeable effect on boat performance. I am considering getting rid of mine next haul out.
Yeah I saw that at the marina but didn't want to drill holes in the hull. Hopefully the solution we came up with works. Should be in next episode or maybe the following.
Haha love the last part great vid as always
Cheers Marion
The truth us out Rob 😂.
Run for the hills 😉
👍🏼❤ the vLog. I personally don't have a shower problem. Just a small problem remembering to wash the soap out of my hair❗️😊
You and Claire could be twins!😊
I, however, do have a question ? Why did the 5200 fail ? That is/was the first time I've ever known it to fail. 🤔 guessing that there is a 'First' for everything.
@stevenr8606 all this will be answered in next weeks vlog so stay tuned 😊
Yes the visibility and jellyfish has made Koh Lipe much less enjoyable than usual!
Yeah we picked a time when a consistent breeze had whipped up the sediment.
Always love your vlogs
Thank you 😊

A....... Haaa!!!! the shoe issue does come up. Hey i would also like to walk about shoeless but in today's societies with broken glass and the lot, we'll see maybe you will be able to convert me but only partially. i do walk shoeless in parks but wil my head down to look for broken glass and the lot.
Asia is incredible for its lack of glass pollution so all good here.
Haha, great vid.
Cheers mate
Some things once seen can not be unseen. 😂
😉 all you're getting is an eye full of pyjamas.
@@TheCruisingKiwis Tee hee.
Hey u guys when we gonna c the boat out of the water u know I'm all ways impatient lol and ummm nice ending mamamia
Haha haven't had nearly enough time on the hard tarmac!
*1:20** i have barnacles. i need to get one of those.* they never fit in my skinny jeans. poor design. _JC
I bet you're going straight to the chandlery
King Harald of Norway (87) now leaving Langkawi in an ambulance jet plan to home. He was on hoiday there wihte Queen Sonja. Became sick- got temporary pacemaker!
I just read that online today. I wonder where he was staying?
@@TheCruisingKiwisthey stayed at a luxury resort!
@sisselnilsen4699 do you know ow where? Langkawi is not a luxurious island. Unfortunately, the i frastructure looks like it has seen better days. If you are a drinker, however, it has the cheapest alcohol prices we have ever seen.
@@TheCruisingKiwis Jourmalists from Norway went there. In the end he was put into hospital there, royal suite and health service also from Norway. Now he is back in Oslo
Typical Rob, has to have control.😜couldn't u have let her wash the shampoo out, she was going to ur Bday party with other people. Grouch.
It was a case of chaos and misunderstanding. The birthday flotilla had arrived, and Rob was unaware Claire had a head full of conditioner when he turned off the water and went to greet the arriving troops.
@@TheCruisingKiwis Yes Rachel, my bad!!!😭
@seawench555 my apologies seawench, I have removed that 'ouch' it was unnecessary. Thank you for your continued support.
